Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester London Reviews from The Last Year
Elevators?
Dinner yesterday. First of the year. The team in the kitchen and on the floor are so consistent in a positive way that dining here is a zero risk event. They are just so professional. I don't know about you but with sky rocketing prices at restaurants today, I literally cannot afford any longer making mistakes in dining out. The mistake of selecting a bad restaurant is just too prohibitively expensive. Not a risk here. Been there several time, the cuisine, the visuals are nicer now, no point expanding, they are just very good, even in desserts! This cuisine in London has one key characteristics that makes it quite different from its peers: I have tasted quite a few of their dishes over the years, and the team in the kitchen clearly is not afraid of taking risks and to innovate... This is what I personaly love it here but many of their in 2*-3* peers are much more risk-adverse in their recipes, in their visuals, in their business propositions to clients etc... So far it has worked but it is more risky. I am sure they know that... On the floor they have an excellent restaurant manager. Smart and pro. A keeper in my language! Sommellerie is excellent too. Only one thing I would change ASAP: the music. Even in a lift, it is better. Whoever selected the playlist should be fired at once. And I am not joking. Clearly someone who does not work on the floor and someone who does not eat there. Thankfully, the rest is just perfect.
A disappointment
All I can say is this place is just so disappointing and underwhelming, I’m actually confused as to how it has 3 stars. There is no innovation, there was shell left on my lobster and most things just had citrus added for flavour.. I also feel as though particular waiting staff assumed that I don’t usually eat tasting menus so didn’t care about the detail behind the dish, I noticed explanations to the table next to us were very different to ours and I had to ask lots of questions. There was no storytelling, no personality, nothing that blew me away except for the incredibly expensive bill presented at the end. Hardly any snacks to start with which is the best bit and the highlight is the teeny tiny scallop so make sure you savour it! So many better 1 and 2 star places that I prefer…
Ducasse
I recently had the opportunity to dine at the Alain Ducasse restaurant at the Dorchester in London and I must say that the experience was absolutely exceptional. The restaurant is located in a luxurious and refined setting, with impeccable service from the moment you walk through the door. The staff was courteous, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and wines. The kitchen is led by Chef Alain Ducasse, an icon of global cuisine, and his culinary mastery is clearly reflected in every dish. Each plate was a festival for the senses, with fresh, high-quality ingredients expertly prepared and creatively presented. The dishes were balanced, full of bold, complex flavors that worked together harmoniously. Every bite was a memorable taste experience. Although the prices are high, the dining experience and the⬤
Exceptional! Don't miss out, if your bank account allows it.
Best restaurant of my 20 day trip to the UK. Exquisite service and food. Very friendly staff and without the intrusiveness that usually occurs in these luxury restaurants. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny. Depending on your budget on the day of your visit, choose to pair the wine with the food, which is sensational. At the end of the meal we were treated to a visit to the kitchen and a chat with the chef. Superb!
My husband and I had dinner at Alain Ducasse to close out
My husband and I had dinner at Alain Ducasse to close out our short trip in London. No disrespect, but Alain Ducasse was our second choice after we found out that Clare Smyth's restaurant was booked up. For our experience at Alain Ducasse, the service was top-notch. The food was artfully executed but not palatable to our taste. I felt the same way at The French Laundry (Yountville, CA) and Kashiwaya (Osaka, Japan). Unfortunately, you don't always have a great meal at a 3-star Michelin restaurant. 1st course: This was my favorite of the entire tasting menu. A lovely scallop dish topped with Kristal caviar and beurre balance sauce was the perfect bite. 2nd course: A cauliflower-hazelnut dish created with seasonal ingredients but just tasted very mid. 3rd course: Lobster was slightly overcooked. 4th course: Turbot was perfectly prepared. It was delicious, but I have to say I barely tasted the sea urchin. 5th course: Venison, also perfectly prepared and delicious. At this point, nothing really blew me away. Everything tasted good but not amazing. The next 2 courses were dessert courses and, as expected, were not exciting. 6th course: This course included 3 types of cheeses, one being particularly pungent. While I do enjoy some cheeses, I find myself unable to appreciate stinky cheese. 7th course: The final course was a green apple sorbet of sorts, sorry to put it so simply. It was very, very tart, but not bad. Since we were celebrating an anniversary, the chef sent us a baba au rhum, which was very kind of him/her. Alain Ducasse is such a culinary legend, and I really wanted to like his food, but I just didn't. I'm very sorry to say this tasting menu was not very fun.
Afternoon Tea @thedorchester
Amazing service from Jo and Anwar- celebrated a special milestone birthday with a very close friend - highly recommended.
They are not accommodating.
They don't care , they just want your money. I flew in from London and I arrived sick, I had severe motion sickness and dehydrated. I called to cancel my reservation since I was so sick and told them if I end up going there, I would throw up. They didn't care about my health. They charged me 500 pounds for cancelling. I should have showed up and just thrown up at the restaurant!! They don't care about you at all!!
I should have just showed up and got sick there!!!

just ok
went with my partner, was just underwhelming in general. staff were very good but the food and overall experience was poor value for the money being spent. would have been better off going else. that said, its nice to say you been , even if just the once.
An outstanding culinary experience
As you'd expect, this was an outstanding culinary experience with impeccable service. We opted for the tasting menu with accompanying wine with each dish. As the vino kicked in, by the time the last course arrived, I’d be lying if I said I could remember the fine details of everything I ate. I do know that every dish was superbly presented with enthusiastic explanations of both food and wine from their team. This contrasted with the restaurant interior which, whilst welcomely spacious, felt somewhat minimalist and formal. Apparently, it’s reminiscent of an informal English garden but I didn’t pick up on that. But hey – what do I know about interior designs? I’d also mention that the bill includes a space for adding a gratuity when service charge at 15% is already included. As I assume that the service charge is shared by the team, if you want to leave more, I don’t think you need to be prompted to do it. Despite those minor gripes, the experience was outstanding. In particular, I’d like to thank Andre, Emil and Abby (apologies for any misspellings). You were all great. And a few other of your team members whose names I did not get.
3 reasons.
Been there several times. Why? Three simple reasons: 1- The cuisine is amongst the top best in London (ingredients, recipes etc…). Second, you don’t take any risks here: cuisine and service have never let me down, my clients, or my friends. I don’t know about you but with restaurant prices now in the stratosphere, I can’t afford any more to be disappointed with 1* restaurants but with a 2-3* bill. Can you? And third, the menu changes pretty often. This is the opposite of the Ritz for ex. where they could print their menus on a marble stone as it almost never changes. This is the reverse here: they respect seasons (no apricot soufflé in February for ex./Guess which 3* restaurant in London serves green peas all year long?), and if you come several times a year, you are not going to find the same dishes over and over again. That’s pretty risky in fact as unlike many 3* restaurant West of London for ex. or very close to the D, the cuisine here is taking risks with each new dish they create. I suppose this is more fun for them and for us clients, but the risks are there. Last point, the staff on the floor and in the kitchen are just nice people. And today, in this awful world, I don’t want to waste any more time with obnoxious, pretentious staff in some high-end restaurants (I have names…! ). That’s not the case here. Not everything is perfect: the music is cr..p. No personality there. The decors, well am not a fan. And the aperitifs could be updated. The wine list is .. Well, I have decided to remain polite on this website. Thankfully, they have a young sommelier doing an excellent job the same they have a great lady as RM who is very pro. Shame they are now closed at lunches during the week and of course like they remain cosed on Saturdays and Sundays at lunch time. Would be so great. Amongst the very best restaurants in London.
Third stop on our Michelin tour 2023 !
So, this was to be the "big gun" on our London Michelin adventure 2023, and it did not disappoint. At this point we have had Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, lunch at Petrus and now the Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Last time we were at the Dorchester ( and Alain Ducasse) was the spring of 2019 for a lunch. I though the hotel was stunning then but now its just over the top incredible. Walking the promenade to the artist bar is just magical, with so much understated elegance. We settled in for some pre dinner cocktails . The young Italian bar man was engaging, witty and made a top notch Martini. The older gentleman brought us some delightful snacks which were truly appreciated. Upon entering the dining room, we were shown to a table next to la table Lumiere. I wont go into all the details of the meal, except to say there was not one misstep, nor did one plate go back with anything remaining on it( we chose the tasting menu with the wine pairings "experience" level.) I found the young sommelier to be incredibly knowledgeable and most engaging. End of the night highlight was to tour the kitchen and meet Chef Blondet and his brigade. Incredible evening all around, an absolute highlight of our London adventure !
This was my first 3 Michelin star experience in London and
This was my first 3 Michelin star experience in London and I wanted to make sure I picked one that had been there the longest. When we sat down someone greeted us right away and then it took about 10 minutes for anyone to come back over. That was the only hiccup during the whole evening but all the food with the presentation and flavor was excellent. It is one of those restaurants that you need to check off the list. Definitely give it a try if your able to score a reservation.
Very difficult! A three star Michelin restaurant.
Expectations are high. One spends a few thousand dollars or a few thousand pounds for not only the experience but heavenly food. While the food was good and the service was good...it was not mind blowing by any stretch of the imagination. Everyone was disappointed. The staff was courteous and did their roles. I was wearing a black suit, they only had white napkins which I have not seen before. Possible white lint on a black suit is why I always have seen different colored napkins available. There were times where one wine glass was different from the others. Thought that was odd. A little sloppy. They were very good at planning menu options for anyone with allergies. The food did seem to have an over citrus flavor theme throughout. Not a big citrus fan. So I personally had a problem. There was one dish that features a small bit of sardines to add variety of flavor. Seemed very poorly executed. Was not spread evenly to give the full consistent taste. One bite had none. Another bite that sardine is all I tasted and another was perfect. The steak dish had no flavor at all. Even a little salt would have helped. We enjoyed the cream that came with the caviar, scallop and the lobster dish the most. Most of the dishes were not memorable. I would not come back here. Once again there are so many good options available.
