AuGust Zürich Reviews from The Last Year
Not as good as expected
With various opinions on this Michelin Awards restuarant in old town Zurich, we decided to experience the quality of food in this restaurant in stead of waiting for another Michelin restaurant on our last evening in Switzerland. After having shared small Buratta, which was tasty, beef steak and sausage of the day as our main course with two side discs, we had to admit that this restuarant offered nice food above average. However, the quality of all cuisine we had, was not outstanding and was not good enough to deserve Michelin Awards. The service was average and the atmosphere of sitting outside table was not quite different from other restaurants in old town Zürich. Between 3-4 stars might be suitable, not 5 stars for sure. The price was relative high in comparison to similar restaurants we had during our trip in Switzerland. We agreed with previous comments on overcharging tap water. As a matter of fact, we would like to verify that comment by order a half liter of still water ( turn out to be tap water) along with two glasses of red wine (which was not in the wine list). We were charged 7 CHF without informing the restaurant’s policy and 17 CHF for 100 ml of local swiss wine. It was quite expensive for tap water charges. Red wine we had was so-so and was not that delicious as we had on last dinner. The experience we had from this restaurant was quite a difference from what we had in restaurants in Luzern, Interlaken, Zermatt and Montreux. It might be better off for travelers who have few days in Zurich to consider other restaurants to have pleasant time dinning. For us , this restaurant is not our suggestion to our friends who might have any chance visiting Zurich.
14 francs for tap water
Food was not bad. But 14 francs for tap water!!!! Are you kidding me!!! The waiter didn't mention this at all when he asked us what to drink.
Outrageously bad.
Outragiously overpriced, the house salad is a shame with molecules of ONE cooked egg in the midst of a tasteless salat; we were given water glasses but the water never came; lots of idle waiters lounging around whose main activity is chatting. The dishes were less than mediocres, the quantities were laughable; we had 10 full meals in Swizerland during these 5 days "Urlaub", this one was the only "woops ! wrong adress ! " experience . Incredibly bad service and indifference, stay away from it unless you want to spend 97 CHF for next to nothing (table for two). Shameful.
Love the ribs
One of the only places in Zurich that has barbecue ribs and the ribs was delicious. Dessert was the bomb too. I’ll definitely be back when I come back to Zurich
Great food and friendly service
I am very stingy with top reviews but after several visits I really can’t find any faults with AuGust. Great food, very friendly and attentive staff, nice layout. What’s not to like? This is a meat restaurant, though they do have non meat items on the menu. My “go to” is the sliced veal Zürich style which comes with a mushroom cream sauce. Add a side of spaetzle and you have an amazing meal. Unfortunately, I’m always too full to try their amazing looking desserts. Perhaps next time…
Another consistent winner - traditional Swiss cuisine nicely executed with confidence & style
Returning here after many years thankfully wasn’t an error..as can sometimes be the case with fondly held memories of past dining experiences, never matching current delivery. Warmly greeted & seated at their second sitting, we were in for what transpired to be a relaxed & delicious meal..meat being central to what they do… We all went expressly to experience the classic Swiss favorite “Fleischkase”..a fine veal meatloaf that is lightly pan fried & most often topped served with a sunnyside-up egg..but it may be subjected to many added indignities such as mushrooms & other culinary treasures! Still with the ubiquitous egg. Maybe! Standard modern accompaniment are chips, but my husband & myself picked another Swiss delight >> Roesti - fried shredded potatoes..oh Boy! Their version was only just “ok” ..but their slim chips were far far better ! Prior to all this deliciousness we began by sharing super thin Weidikerli sausages & the house salad .. super !( as the locals are wont to exclaim!) Efficient service with attendant charm was consistently delightful, & I’ve only one quibble that surfaced which was the utter disbelief in being charged CHF 22 for a Swiss cheese platter whose three varieties had come straight from the refrigerator..whaaat?, This laziness is an unforgivable culinary crime against good food, & AuGust must know better. Shame on them.. We concluded our repast with good coffees..& shared an entirely unnecessary- but superb!- Millefeulle. Recommended.
Disappointing
The food wasn't special, the service was too chummy and the cramped seating was really unbearable. That was the end of the visit to this restaurant.
That's really not possible, a disgrace for the Widder Hotel!
I am, or was, a big fan of the Widder Hotel and have been able to enjoy the Widder Restaurant several times. But what unfortunately happened in the AuGust, which is part of the hotel, is a disgrace for the hotel and for Zurich too. The reception in the AuGust was cold or even non-existent. The restaurant was empty and instead of a "welcome", I was just given a strange look, as if you want to give me some work now... Luckily, ordering went smoothly. But what was then served is simply unbelievable. The cheese starter for 18 francs would have failed as an amuse bouche in any other restaurant in terms of portion size. Maybe 5 grams of cheese on a huge bed of salad, which shouldn't have been there according to the menu, but the kitchen was allowed to use the large plate. Well, that looks like more. Dear F&B Manager, that's more than insulting, even in Zurich. The staff are very committed to venting about the world and its problems in front of all the guests in the middle of the restaurant. Of course the guests are too stupid to notice. Since the world has so many problems, the staff were so distracted that their attention to the guests was negligible or almost non-existent. No one asked if the food was tasty. 10 minutes before an empty beer glass and so on. A clear complaint when paying was immediately acknowledged as "are you trying to cause me problems now?" Unfortunately, it's a shame that the Maitre de Restaurant is in the same league. So, dear Widder team: NEVER EVER AGAIN!
Be careful of the water
Average food, prices also high for what they offer, but the thing I least liked is discovering that water (from the tap) is sold for 7 francs per person with the formula "as long as you want it" which on a table 4 people where 3 take the beer and only one the water they all have to pay anyway... it's written on the menu anyway... what we tasted is normal for the area, nothing exceptional including the rosti, we liked the bread and butter offered .
A very good restaurant
My wife and I went to dinner at this restaurant recommended by a famous guide. We found the setting very pleasant, the cuisine excellent and the service perfect. This experience enchanted us so much that we returned there a week later. Same satisfaction regarding the quality of the cuisine and the explanations of Roger who was able to advise us effectively in the choice of our dishes and wines with professionalism and great kindness. An excellent address in Zurich.
Pasta with Truffle
Love the extraordinary Tagliatelle Pasta with Duck and Truffle. Fast service, food is served in 15-20mins. Nice ambiance and atmosphere.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
