We love everything about Baobab Fare! Service was spot on, food was beyond amazing and restaurant is nice. We did have a short wait, but well worth it. I'm looking forward to going back for another tasty meal.
Be the first to ReplyI've been wanting to try out Baobab Fare since December.
I finally had time before catching my flying home to stop by. I went for lunch around 12:40 today. Inside is beautiful, great music, friendly vibe. The team greeted me and the server was personable and very kind. I wish I could say my food experience was just as amazing, it was meh. I ordered the Samaki. It was beautifully plated. The fish was warm at best. The rice was about the same. The beans were warmer but not at an expected temperature for food coming out the kitchen. The beans were flavorful. Seasoning was perfect. The plantains were fresh and hot. I love plantains and they were perfect. I would have advised the server that my food was cold but not sure where they went. They disappeared for a good while, at least 10 minutes. I had to get up to order the Tamu and request the check. The Tamu! Is so good. Order it! I will definitely try them again next month. I am hoping that this was a one off experience. I would encourage everyone to try out this restaurant.

After a wonderful play at the Fisher Theatre, we walked to Baobab Fare to try out a restaurant with nearly consistent raved reviews on all platforms. It did not disappoint. As our friend exclaimed, "This dining experience takes our outing to a whole new level". I began with a spiced coffee and thoroughly enjoyed its rich, spicy and aromatic qualities. The frothy oat milk was the perfect accompaniment. The food....OMG.....I can't stop daydreaming about it. Everything was divine. Each dish was so flavorful and perfectly cooked, yet not at all spicy or overpowering. Our vegetarian friend had the dish that included all veggie sides. It looked and smelled amazing. She loved it. We sampled their fish and goat dishes. Perfection. You know that feeling where what you see, smell and taste all come together and their union was divine? Ya..... so good. Dessert was also well worth the experience. They were out of their mango coconut dessert yet the other two options were thoroughly enjoyed. Rich, cool, smooth, sweet, tangy.... Perfect. We challenged our wait staff with questions, ambivalence, asking for substitutions and cashing out then going back for dessert. Not a problem. They were gracious, polite, helpful and efficient. Be prepared to add a nice tip. These people deserve it. The small restaurant remained busy during our stay. We were seated and needed to flag down a server to get the ball rolling, but all was wonderful thereafter. Our food came quickly, was visually enticing and we were checked on often. The ambience was urban, cool, cheery and steeped in a feeling of community. I wish there were an option to add bonus stars. Baobab would definitely deserve highest recognition. The tab? Who knows? I would have paid any amount they charged, happily. Needless to say, we are returning.... Often!
Be the first to ReplyA beautiful awesome day amazing people of the world.
Today, we try out East African food at Baobab Fare in downtown Detroit. Now, do I know anything about East African food? No. But we're here, we're hungry AF, and let's give the food a go shall we. First off, we have the fish dish called Samaki. It had the corn, plantains, and coconut rice. The plate was ok. It didn't really quite give me that OMG feeling that I was looking for. Then there's the eggplant dish called Intore. This was definitely a lot better than the fish dish. If you're about a vegetarian plate, this is a wonderful dish for you. Now we're on to the desserts, The Tamura, which is a passion fruit and avocado that's an explosion in the mouth. The other dessert is the Coco Mango, which was also an amazing dessert as well. Anywho, this place is totally dope. Everyone should give this spot a try and lemme know what you think. Gimme a follow as well for more foodie adventure. Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision-making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!
Be the first to ReplyMboga is one of the best meals I've had in Detroit.
I've had it several times, and I prefer the delicious spiced rice pilau over the coconut rice, which is more similar to just normal white rice. The staff have always been super kind, the turnaround time on an order is always ridiculously fast, and it's just a really cool ambience in there. My only criticism is the small number of vegan options. If there were a couple more vegan options I would eat there way more often so I could rotate dishes. I've had the Intore and the Mboga, and those are the vegan main options with Mboga being my favorite. The side of fried plantains were delicious and had vegan sauces for dipping, and I've had good drinks including the hibiscus and African tea.

Best decision ever!! The warm colors, wonderful decor, and soothing music give this restaurant a welcoming atmosphere. We arrived minutes after they opened. We were seated immediately. Stephanie answered our questions and took our order. Our drinks came out quick and the food followed. Everything was delicious! Everything!! If you haven't already visited, make it a priority! Street metered parking

This was our second time coming to the restaurant and the second time the mango dessert was not available. Just like my initial visit I ordered online and when I got there the dessert was sold out. Update: they had one of the three ordered. The goat was dry this time it needed some sauce on it, the beef was the size of the palm of my child's hand, and the chicken leg was small. Disappointed that the portions changed for the price. I bragged about the goat to my mom because the first time I had it was very good. I will not go back for a while and will see if the food quality comes back up. Too bad I have been bragging about their food since I had it last month.
Be the first to ReplyWe had chicken, beef and fish, everything was delicious.
The service is great. Beautiful restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThis came as a recommendation from a co-worker.
I'd never have African food before but now I'm in love. I had the NYUMBANI which was delicious! The tomato sauce they put on top I asked for a side to take home. The coconut and spiced rice was delicious; I got half and half. Why have one when you can have both! The fried plantains were crispy on the outside and sweet on the inside. I added the corn salad which was a nice refreshing element had diced cucumbers in it. Reminded me of a cold elote salad. The warm spices were perfect. I had spiced coffee which was delicious. My coworkers each had different things One had the eggplant dish one had the goat and two had the chicken. All loved their food. I will DEF be back. The atmosphere is very open and eerie it's on the corner of two streets so it's all windows so it feels very open and breathable. They sell their passion fruit drink and some clothing some dark chocolate and some other items to go. The customer service was fantastic. There was always someone within sight to get assistance and he came back often and asked if we needed anything additional. We didn't. For my first experience with African food I am super pleased and very impressed. Yum!

I think this is one of the most exciting new restaurants to come to Detroit in a long time! I have eaten there about five times and sampled many of their wonderful east African dishes, and every one of them have been delicious and an adventure in unique food. Do not miss the Tamu for dessert!

We had the privilege of dining at Baobab Fare on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. This Chopped award winning food and service was outstanding. The serving staff was warm and welcoming only to be outdone by the delicious food. This was our first taste of East African food and we will be back. The goat was excellent, sweet and tender. My husband had the chicken. Flavors and spices were spot on. Desserts (avocado, chia, mango pudding, and coconut mango brulee) were unusual and wonderful. The owner was gracious enough to take pictures with us too. We bought a bag of the coffee beans to take home and they're delicious. The price was very reasonable. I hope this place stays around for many years.
Be the first to ReplySo much good food here to enjoy.
Don't hesitate don't discriminate your palate deserves this indulgence. If you enjoy comfort food with a little spice, try this native Burundi spot. Great lunch or dinner!

My first time there for lunch with coworker. The entire vibe was great. I can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience at Baobab fare.
All the dishes were great but our favorite was the kupuna and Mbuzi. We wanted to try the Nyubani but it was sold out at 5:30 pm, so will have to go back again. It was definitely very busy and we waited for about 45 min, but definitely worth the wait.

When I think about baobob fare I must have it soon. Service is fair I think they just have to work out some things on that. Great plantains and delicious entrees.
Be the first to ReplyBaobab Fare is absolutely DELICIOUS! As listed in Yelp's
Baobab Fare is absolutely DELICIOUS! As listed in Yelp's best 100 restaurants of 2023, Baobab Fare does not disappoint. The Samaki is a lightly fried fish with a spice blend that leaves you wanting more. Its accompaniments add an extra tanginess, sweetness, and even creaminess from the coconut rice. Truly a must have. The Mbuzi is a goat shank only available for dinner. The meat is beautifully tender and seasoned well. The meal was enough for two and even had some leftovers to enjoy just the same the next day. And if you're thirsty the Hibiscus tea is a beautiful vibrant pink, perfectly sweetened and just tart enough to be the best drink to get here. Service was great and our waiter did check up on us consistently, and although we came in ready with our meal decided, he did offer his opinion and just let us know we were ordering some great things... although it does sound like anything off of Baobab's menu is beautifully delicious. Chef Mamba brings beautiful flavors from Burundi as an offering to Detroit and is definitely where you should be going for your next meal!
Be the first to ReplyThis is literally one of my favorite restaurants in Detroit.
I am so glad that they opened it here. The food is some of the best that you can get in the city. Authentic flavorful and all-around phenomenal. The ambience is great feeling very at home while also very high class. The service is great as well, as the servers will always cater to you and your needs, ensuring that you have an authentic experience.
Be the first to ReplyIt was busy, but service was good, quick.
The food was excellent and served quickly as well. We had Nyumbani and KuKu.
Be the first to ReplyThere is a reason why this restaurant is highly rated.
When I tell you this is my favorite restaurant in Detroit, I mean it. Food is delicious, and when it comes to restaurants I do not care for service (if it was bad or good), but the food came so fast and they are the nicest people ever. I always go here when I have the chance and you should too!
Be the first to ReplyRelaxed atmosphere with elevated flavors.
The food was delicious and reasonable especially considering the portion size. The depth of flavor was remarkable! Service was speedy and precise. Worth a stop to explore food that is likely unfamiliar or hard to find for most!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, superior service, very beautiful aesthetic.
The location is also nice too. I love mid downtown.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for lunch before a matinee at the Fischer.
Loved trying new dishes and everything was good-especially the plantains. Loved supporting this local restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyMidtown has such a diverse food scene.
You can pretty much get any kind of cuisine (and good quality, too) you're looking for within a few city blocks. Baobab Fare was no exception. The food came fast, service was good, and the meal was delicious. Will go again.
