There are many good restaurants in the Newtown area, but this one is very good on some levels. The setting is rustic with a very nice fireplace providing heat and ambiance and good use has been made of the space to create intimate dining areas that did not feel confining. Our large group was comfortably seated at a good size table with a server who was efficient and communicative - not overly enthusiastic or outgoing, but more than capable of getting the job done. The menu is reasonably sized with a little of everything: Steak, seafood, pasta, chicken, etc. We opted to start with the Pork Belly and Calamari appetizers. The calamari was well prepared with crispy tender pieces enhanced with a sweet chili sauce. The pork belly was amazing with great flavor and tender melt-in-your-mouth pieces. Neither portion was particularly generous (particularly for the mid-teen price point), but the flavors were worth it. For entrees, we opted for the Shrimp and Grits and the Sacchetto pasta. The shrimp were slightly undercooked and at $32 (as of this review) the shrimp should have been larger or there should have been more of them. The grits were purported to have cheddar and jalapenos in them, but that seemed to be more advertising than fact. The standout of the dish was the sweet chili sauce. The Sacchetto pasta purse dish was very flavorful with a great balance between the onions, mushrooms, short ribs, and cheeses. That dish, although relatively small, was worth the $28 price point. Barnwood is worth a visit and the full house indicates that diners are not put off by the price point. I'd make it a regular spot to eat if the prices or portions were more reasonable. As it is, we'll return but only on occasion.
