Belcanto Lisboa Reviews
My friend managed to snag reservations for Belcanto on my
My friend managed to snag reservations for Belcanto on my first night in Lisbon. Service off the bat was very nice. I was having issues with Bolt/Uber so we opted to take a local taxi and when we got there the driver told us he only takes cash. I only had big bills and the taxi driver said he didn't have any change. The staff at Belcanto was quick to break my big Euro bill so I could pay my taxi. Not a huge thing, but I appreciated it very much, especially since I was running late. Of course, we splurged and went with the tasting menu. 2 of the people in our party were non-drinkers and the rest of us don't drink much either, so we opted to skip the wine pairings. It's tough, but my top 3 bites were the seaweed cannelloni with caviar, sea turbot, and suckling pig with mole. That's not to say the rest of the food wasn't amazing, but those 3 things really stood out for me. The service was wonderful. They checked up on us often but not to the point where it felt overbearing. They ensured our glasses stayed full which I always appreciate. However, this brings me to my main point of contention with Belcanto. We ended up spending €36 on water. I guess it is our fault because I'm sure the price of water was listed on the menu but we didn't even think about it. It's not like we didn't order other drinks. Despite not ordering alcohol, we had several "mocktails". I know paying for water at restaurants is pretty standard in Europe but you'd think they'd cut us a break when we all ordered the €265 tasting menu. All that said, I did enjoy the experience very much. It's extremely pricey but I knew that going in. I can certainly recommend Belcanto.
Outstanding
This is the very finest dining experience. If you are fortunate enough to have the budget and would like to sample Portuguese influenced cuisine being prepared and presented in the most creative way then Belcanto is highly recommended. Our meal was unhurried and the staff took pride in talking us through each course. I can thoroughly recommend the taster menu, which is little different in price to the A la carte and treated us to a wonderful array of ingredients, tastes and textures served over 10 courses. We have dined in 3 star restaurants and I could discern no difference between this 2 star establishment and those that achieve the pinnacle in the Michelin guide. A truly memorable experience - just as it should be.
Absolutely perfect in every sense.
The location, ambiance service and food are perfect. Eating here is a true experience. The staff are professional and yet very friendly. The chef's inspiration for each dish is explained and his whimsical side is evident in the food and in its presentation (a napkin you wear as a sleeve during desert from his childhood memories!). I definitely recommend getting the tasting menu. We did not get the wine pairing but instead asked the sommelier for his recommendation of a great Portuguese white wine (do not get red here!) and were not disappointed. As you might expect for a Michelin 2 star restaurant, it's expensive but a great place for a special night.
Ok don't judge me! This was my first 2 Michelin star
Ok don't judge me! This was my first 2 Michelin star restaurant. If you are concerned about cost this is not the place for you. The focus was on locally sourced products food and wine. Lisbon has so much to offer a chef who is looking for ingredients. Upon entering the restaurant at 7:15 for our 7:30 reservation we were asked if we would like to see the kitchen which we happily said yes to. They took us through to where they make the appetizers and desserts. From there we were shown the hot side of the kitchen. We were able to meet the head chef and owner José Avillez. And he was kind enough to take a picture with our group. He seems very nice and down to earth. We were then seated at a great corner round table that could have sat 6 or more people so there was plenty of room for the four of us. Then the adventure really began. Although there was a menu and we could have picked a few things. We all decided to have the tasting menu. It was required that the group order in same manner, either all off the menu or all tasting. Also the menu changes so the items we had may not be available when you try this. And I hope you do! I'll try to do justice to the food but it was all great and it was truly a culinary journey through Portugal. Many pictures attached. Each course came with a preceding card to accompany the dish. Opening up we had 4 small bites. A carrot bite, a caviar bite, foie gras golden orb, a nest of tempura with tuna. We moved on to the seaweed dish, this was surprisingly good, I'm not usually a big fan. At this point we were given the bread and butter. They also offered some olive bread and traditional Portuguese corn bread, one of my favorites. We then enjoyed the beet dish that sat on a layer of pine nut milk and mustard seed. This dish was truly eye opening for its use of color and textures. The next dish was described as the mountains. Any who has walked a couple of days in Lisbon will identify with this. It was a section of cabbage leaf covering a piece of dry aged fish. If you like sushi this one will fit you well. The sauce was described a being from a traditional Portuguese boiled dinner or Cozido a Portuguesa, one of my favorite family meals growing up. The next dish was the golden goose egg. This egg seemed lightly poached and wrapped in gold leaf. Sitting on a bed of something crunchy- sorry can't remember what. Next came the shrimp in a red pepper sauce. This was followed by a piece of turbot fish with clams served with a cream sauce and garnished with caviar - both these dishes were incredible. At this point we all took a break to get some air. This experience was getting intense. While we were outside we notice encanto same owner 1 Michelin star next door. Our last savory dish was the sucking pig severed over a mole sauce. This was truly a tasty way to finish this part of the meal, it was awesome. We then moved on to what we thought was the final card and item. We had an ice cream sandwich that none of us could imagine. It included a small piece of presunto to add unexpected flavor. I'll leave it at that but there were 2 additional surprises that were also incredibly good. This was not dinner, it was a gastronomical adventure! If you can make it to Lisbon and want to try something extraordinary- this is the place. Nelson took great care of us and we appreciate it. Chef Jose stopped by the table somewhere after the 4th or 5th course. There were at least another 5 or 6 staff we were served by that were super knowledgeable multilingual and fantastic. They easily flowed from us in English and Portuguese to another table in French then another in Italian. I can't even discuss the wine pairings. They were all so well thought out. Enjoy.
Belcanto was a very nice restaurant.
White table cloths, incredible interior and servers that were on point. Entered the restaurant and immediately whisked away to a tour of the kitchen. Met everyone and it definitely set the tone for the night. We chose the a la carte menu since we had a previous experience of the tasting menus to be more fish based. Think cod. Tasting menu is a surprise so you don't know what you are getting until it's in front of you. Food, service, atmosphere, interior were great. Just my type of restaurant.
Excellent food with a few surprises
The dinner overall was a great experience, with plenty of creativity throughout the courses. The highlights for me were the lobster caesar and the scarlet shrimp, both full of flavor and beautifully done. The partridge and foie gras “golden sphere” was the only true wow moment, though everything else was solid. The sea bass was perfectly cooked, but the clams in the dish didn’t work for my taste. I found the squid ink sorbet before dessert very unusual but surprisingly balanced, and the final chocolate with caramel was a perfect finish. Service stayed polished and attentive the whole evening.
Still our favorite restaurant
We last ate at Belcanto ten years ago when it was in a smaller location and was imediately our favorite place we had ever eaten at. Ten years later to celebrate our wedding anniversary we returned. We had the tasting menu without the wine pairing and instead had a bottle of recommended portugese wine. The service, food and hospitality were all superb supplemented with little touches such as illustrated cards with each course and the kitchen tour. The menu has evolved a lot since we were last there and is varied interesting and flavoursome. A big thanks to the chef and all his team for there hospitality and service, which made our day very special. Still our favourite restaurant, will not be ten years before we return.
Exceptional Experience that is Truly Worth it if your Budget allows
Unbelievable and unique but extremely expensive gastronomic extravaganza that lasts 3 plus hours and encompasses 12-14 courses. Bottom line is that if your budget allows, then do not hesitate and do it but definitely get the wine pairings which will make the dinner for 2 about 830 euros before tip. However, there are amazing touches like a kitchen tour, postcards of each "moment", napkins that you wear on your sleeve, young, attentive bright and enthusiastic waiters and sommeliers. The presentations are fabulous, taste beyond compare, and ambiance invigorating. Try to get a kitchen overlook view table if you can which enhances the theater of the meal
Service Beyond Excellence: The attention to detail was
Service Beyond Excellence: The attention to detail was supernatural. The staff anticipated our every need, timing courses perfectly even when I stepped away, refreshing utensils seamlessly, and maintaining our table with such discretion it felt effortless. The spontaneous kitchen tour where we met the passionate team was the cherry on top of an already perfect evening. The Food Journey: Every dish was a revelation: The colorful amuse-bouche set the playful tone "Sea" course with sunflower milk and seaweed created this beautiful artistic moment as we mixed the elements The bread selection was a celebration in itself - three types with two distinct butters (loved the mysterious charcoal one!) Beetroot with tartare, milk, and pine nuts was unexpectedly harmonious Hamachi in konbu broth - silky perfection that melted on the tongue "The Golden Egg" wrapped in gold leaf with truffle notes - pure theater meets flavor The "campfire" shrimp presentation literally brought fire to our table My standout favorite: the suckling pig with Portuguese-style mole using nuts instead of traditional spices, lightened with chicken instead of pig's blood, elevated by peppery watercress "Farófias" dessert was like eating a cloud - fluffy, ethereal, absolutely magical The Verdict: Belcanto reminded me why I'm passionate about food. This isn't just dining; it's storytelling through cuisine, art you can taste, and hospitality that makes you feel genuinely cared for. Chef José Avillez has created something truly special here. Worth every euro and every moment. This meal will live in my heart forever.
Excellent Michelin experience
Anniversary meal, superb staff from start to end . Included a short kitchen tour We did the Tasting as did most others, 14 courses including an anniversary cake. Paced to perfection , all courses explained in depth . Highly recommend
Special Evening
Overall, the meal was excellent. I ordered 2 starters, a main course and dessert. The amuse bouches (called snacks) at the beginning and petit fours at the end were all very good, but nothing was a "wow" other than the "golden sphere" of partridge escabeche and foie gras. The lobster caesar salad and the scarlet shrimp "starters" were the standout dishes of the evening taste-wise. The sea bass main course was excellent as far as the main protein was concerned, but the clams that were included in the dish (along with sea water) were inedible (to me at least). The pre-dessert squid ink sorbet course was unusual, and the ingredients worked well together. My chocolate dessert with caramel was great. The service was professional and courteous.
This one of our pit stops during my girls Europe trip last
This one of our pit stops during my girls Europe trip last year. Reservations weren't too hard to book. We had Joao as our main host/ server. He was so fun and made our experience at Belcanto more memorable. Each dish came with a little illustration card with short description of the dish. I loved this personal touch and it was a piece of memento for us to take with us. Food was amazing!! Very unique flavors that really showcased the chefs' talents. Highly recommend
Eating at Belcanto is an experience.
The restaurant is beautiful, the service is impeccable and the food, of course, is inventive and delicious. We had the tasting menu and, as with all tasting menus, some dishes were standouts and others were less so. We were unfortunately seated next to a younger couple who spent much of the night scrolling and watching videos on their phones - with the speakers on. They were shushed by the staff and ultimately turned off the speaker. Not what I would expect at such a restaurant. The tasting menu contains several desserts (too many really) and our waiter offered us the mandarin - which we assumed was included for us to split. He essentially encouraged us to order 2. We were shocked to see that we were charged 25 Euros each - adding 50 Euros to the bill. Not worth it and we definitely would have declined if we had realized we were purchasing two additional desserts. It felt chippy and deceptive and left a sour taste in our mouth after such a lovely meal and experience.
OK, this place is all show and very little go.
In other words, the service, atmosphere, and presentation are all 5 *'s. Simply stated, the taste is not good. I have dined all over the world, good food tastes amazing. The taste was bland in most cases or just not good. The one thing that was outstanding was the ceasar salad. My main was the suckling pig and honestly it wasn't good. I just don't get restaurants that do so many emulsions and gastronomy but seem to miss salt. At $250 per person, I would not recommend.
What a fun dinner.
I went back to Belcanto after a decade pause. At that time Belcanto was in a different space, but I remember it was one of my favorite restaurants in Lisbon. While the space has changed, and much of the menu has changed (not all of it though), the fantastic service and incredible experience still reigns true! One constant is the butter - it is so good and there are three beautiful butters that were the same as before, a regular butter, a tomato butter, and a charcoal butter. Each of them has such flavor and goes with the bread so well and introduces you to the care of flavor that you will have while at Belcanto. My favorite dish by far was the suckling pig, truly fantastic, but each and every dish was special in its own regard. My wife loved the cabbage and the whitefish, I thought that the prawn was next in line to the suckling pig. The benefit of the tasting menu is you get to try many different things, though some of the menu I do want to come back and try as a la carte. I'm sure the wine pairing would have been great, but we ended up doing two excellent bottles of wine that complemented our meal perfectly and some port wine to close out at dessert! We will likely be back, hopefully before another decade is up :)
Stunned by the poor quality/cost ratio.
Ashamed we went there. No cancellation under 2 days. A la carte actually price fixe.
This was one of the best dinning experiences that I've had
This was one of the best dinning experiences that I've had and the ambiance and atmosphere is unmatched. While it is encouraged that everyone at the table shared the same tasting menu, my partner and I ordered two different tasting menus and it was a pleasure to try so many different dishes. This is probably discouraged but I really wanted to try as many dishes as I could and I was really happy with this decision. We were seated on the second floor and it was overlooking the kitchen area where the staff prepared the cold items. It was really cool to see how the kitchen is run and see the food being plated. The staff was quite accommodating and then they were really nice. My only qualm was that in the amuse bouche course at the beginning, the broccoli tart that I was eating did not structurally hold up and it fell as I was trying to eat it. My partner had the same experience and the florets stained the table. The waiters put a cloth over it since removing it might cause more staining but this ruined my photos for the night. Minor gripe but it was still an enjoyable evening. As for the food, there were some dishes that I wasn't super fond of but I love the experimentation and the risk taking; even with dishes I didn't love, I still enjoyed the overall experience.
A Memorable Evening!
What an extraordinary evening, Belcanto certainly lived up to its reputation! We enjoyed the “landscape tasting with the premium wine pairing” - each course was unbelievable - absolutely delicious and stunningly presented in unique ways. Very hard to pick our favorite course! The wine pairings were spot on, perfectly paired and varied vintages. We especially enjoyed the colorful cards that explained each course and included tidbits of Chef Jose’s childhood memories (will definitely frame them to remind ourselves of the fabulous experience)! The staff was beyond attentive, we felt special the entire evening. Thank you for a dining experience that we will never forget!
A fantastic experience
Excellent service, spectacular food. The Caesar salad is incredible and the desserts are unforgettable, especially the tangerine. A 10. Bravo to everyone in this unforgettable Restaurant
Belcanto, Rua Serpa Pinto 10A, Lisboa 1200-410 Portugal.
Immersing yourself in the elegant and welcoming ambiance of Belcanto restaurant is like embarking on a culinary journey that awakens all the senses. From the moment you walk through the door, you feel the meticulous attention to detail that defines this two-Michelin-starred establishment. We began our culinary experience at Belcanto with the intriguing and delicious starter entitled "The Garden of Golden Eggs", an exquisite combination of egg, crusty bread and mushrooms that captivated us from the first bite. We continued our feast with the Aged Beef Sirloin, a masterpiece that, although accompanied by an onion pie and spinach salad, left something to be desired with its almond and truffle sauce, which did not live up to our expectations. Our second courses, the Hake and Cilantro Samosa and the Hake and Cilantro Codfish Sounds, were an explosion of flavors that left us completely satisfied. Both dishes stood out for their exquisite preparation and presentation, recommended without reservation. To culminate this gastronomic experience, we indulged in the delight of the desserts: the Apple and Rhubarb Tart and the Corn and Rhubarb Cake. Of both, the apple tart stood out for its creamy texture and its combination with natural yogurt, a true delight that left us with an indelible sweet memory. Chef José Avillez, master of reinvented Portuguese cuisine, has created a menu that celebrates the richness and diversity of local ingredients with an innovative and contemporary approach. But Belcanto is not just about the food; it's also about the experience itself. Service is impeccable, with knowledgeable staff guiding diners through the menu with grace and professionalism.
Wonderful interior space with warm, friendly staff and
Wonderful interior space with warm, friendly staff and fantastic food. I really enjoyed our evening here. Some of the dishes were extraordinary and a few I didn't find impressive. I say if you have some money to burn hit this place up, as it is quite exquisite.
A real treat
Amazing food and service. Great attention to detail. Delicious from start to finish. Felt incredibly spoilt. We had the landscape tasting menu. Particularly liked the chefs snacks , the scarlet shrimp and the squab. Little cards with details of what you are eating on every course is a nice touch. Expensive but worth it.
A special Moment in Lisbon
A very special way to share a moment with cherished friends! The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. The ties to the family feel of the head chef was evident in the servings. The wine was SPECTACULAR! Recommend that you do the Tasting menu (two choices) with the premier wine pairing!!!! We have been to Michelin rated restaurants in other parts of the world and in my opinion this was the best!
Amazing
The service was fantastic. Everybody was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Loved the food. The starters were the some the best four bites I’ve ever had.
I still don't believe how perfect was the food, the service
I still don't believe how perfect was the food, the service was perfect it's the least you can say, and the ambience was amazing and elegant
This was the nicest meal we had during our trip but it
This was the nicest meal we had during our trip but it wasn't the best meal we had. Service was spectacular from start to finish. I can't rave about that enough. The restaurant was really nicely decorated and they gave us a tour of the restaurant. We each ended up doing the 3 course menu, so we could try different items. The food was good and innovative, but I will say entrees were the best. The apps and desserts were ok. It was a good experience and I'm glad we got to try a Michelin star/top 50 in the world restaurant, but the food wasn't the stand out to us.
A fun evening of fine dining
Excellent cuisine. Great service. Looked after from the moment we walked into the restaurant. Knowledgeable staff esp sommelier. Some fun dishes and a few surprises. Ate a la carte. Wine pairing pretty generous and interesting. A great evening although you will spend €500 for a meal for two and one wine flight.
Not worth the stars
Dessert was the best part. Food was okay, wine pairings were good, really docking the score due to service which was unacceptable for a 2-star restaurant. On multiple occasions our water glass was left empty, multiple empty wine glasses were left piling up on the table and crumbs were not cleared. Nice evening but I can’t imagine deserving even 1, much less 2, Michelin stars.
Exceptional Food, Uneven Service, Ungenerous
No doubt that the food is top notch. I chose the a la carte prix fixe. The flavpors were exceptional and inventive and dishes were brilliantly executed and served. Service was very uneven. After being seated in a cold and too large table for six where only three were occupying, it was a full 7 or 8 minutes before water, even longer for menus. We made the mistake of ordering the basic wine pairing. Mistake because you get no wine until the starter arrives, which means your amuse bouches and breads have no wine accompaniment. Once wine does arrive the pours are absurdly parsimonious. Honestly they charge 75Euros for the pairand you get three wines with pours of about an inch each. In short, you have paid 75€ for a glass of wine by the time you depart. We could have ordered a very good bottle each for each course and been much happier. While the wines offered for the pairings were very good snd very well matched, the pours were atypical for Portugal and extremely disappointing. My main was the truly delectable beed. But i could only eat one of two medallions. I was genuinely upset that i was told the remainder could not be wrapped or taken home. I sas told the restaurant was not licensed to take away. When you are paying 200€ for a meal it is entirely improper to be unable to wrap remains. The restaurant owes its clients that service. Pay for that license. For some of us this is a rare experience and if we don't wish to leave uncomfortably stuffed it is only just to offer the take home option. I have never experienced this at any Michelin starred restaurant worldwide. It is plainly wrong. I want to repeat that the food itself was outstanding. The sommelier was knowledgeable, kind and charming. But the service was slow and uneven, and value is lacking on wine pairings. Inability to take away evidences disinterest in genuine service.
Chefs table service was unacceptable
Sat at the chefs table. Food was very good but the chefs table service was young and had an arrogant attitude and actually told me not to taste my food while she was long winded and to say please for more wine! Very dissatisfied with tut chefs table service.
For our family vacation, we decided to splurge and go all
For our family vacation, we decided to splurge and go all out for our last night and have this 2-Michelin starred meal. We figured a 2-Michelin starred tasting menu would be cheaper in Europe than anything we could ever find in NYC, so we went for it. My sister made reservations about 1-1.5 months in advance for our party of 6. It was for a Friday night and we did the 7 pm seating. You can choose to order a la carte, or from two tasting menus - the Classics Menu, and the Evolution Menu. We opted for the Evolution, which is supposed to take you on a journey from how Belcanto started, to present day. This menu consisted of 10 courses. I won't list them all because I don't want to give away the element of surprise (though I'm sure some of the courses are seasonal anyway - we went in December) but I will tell you my favorites of the night. They were the trio of appetizers (seaweed with caviar, tuna and uni, crispy chicken skin), their housemade butter served with your choice of bread, beetroot salad, scarlet shrimp curry, and sea bass. Everything else was just okay, or was something I would not have ordered nor would I order again. But that is the fun part of a tasting menu. You get to try new things you never thought you would try. And of course, you're not going to like every item on the menu. At the end of the meal when serving dessert, they gave us each shirt sleeves to wear on our arms and use as napkins. It was an homage to Chef José Avillez, who they said as a child, used to just wipe his mouth on his sleeve after eating a meal. I thought that was a cute/quirky touch to the experience. Service was impeccable but I guess it better be for that price and for the stars they've earned. There was always someone nearby if you needed something. They put the dishes down in sync. I dropped my napkin and not even one minute later, someone appeared with a new one, without me even requesting one. I would say that my only criticism is that the meal was just way too long. But I suspect it's because we were a party of 6, so they need to wait until every person is done with a course before they bring out the next one. It lasted about 3.5 hours. I've been to other Michelin-starred tasting menus and I would say the max was probably 2.5 hours. Towards the end of the meal, we were all just tired and ready to leave, especially since we had to catch an early flight back home the next morning. Would I come back here again? Probably not. If I were to do another Michelin restaurant in Lisbon, I would want to try something different. Was the food worth the splurge? I'm still not sure. But it was a fun dining experience and I'm glad I got to enjoy it with my family.
Crispy Suckling Pig, Aged Beef Loin Was a pleasure trying
Crispy Suckling Pig, Aged Beef Loin Was a pleasure trying Belcanto! This 2 Michelin star restaurant has just the most beautiful interior, with lovely arched ceilings and plenty of natural light. We decided to opt for a la carte entrees only, but the restaurant kindly served us multiple surprise "moments," which were all delicious and interesting to try. Highlights of the moments were the fresh Tuna amuse bouche, the carrot dish, and the chocolate espresso dessert items. The crispy suckling pig was great, truly as crispy of a skin as you can get, with an incredibly tender and moist meat. The orange sauce on the plate was a delight--I couldn't get enough of it. Great aged beef loin--so tender, excellent sauces. Even the breads and butters were amazing. Was it worth the hefty price tag? Sort of, for the experience and the great flavors. But definitely not a regular thing for me!
We were excited to visit Belcanto on our 2 days in Lisbon
We were excited to visit Belcanto on our 2 days in Lisbon and prioritized finding time to eat here. We were able to get a lunch reservation for their classics menu and were greeted warmly we we arrived. The service in general was prompt and professional without being stuffy. I do wish they would pace out the dishes better when someone uses the restroom. There were a couple of times where the dish came when someone was away. The server did wait to explain the dish but it was a bit awkward with the food on the table. All the dishes we had were good but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a lot of creatively. My favorite dishes were the famous golden egg with truffle and the suckling pig course which had the perfect crispy pig skin. The desserts were also really good and I loved the interesting squid ink desert. All-in-all it was a very nice meal and a great spot to try when in Portugal as it showcases traditional ingredients with a twist in a way that's difficult to find elsewhere. On small note I was happy to see was that the table next to us was a family with 3 young kids. The staff were patient throughout the meal, presenting the amuse bouche to the kids and generally being very nice even when they started being fussy towards the end. There is also a kids menu which from what I heard is the choice of red sauce pasta, fish, or beef.

Omg. This is rated as #25 out of top 50 restaurants in the world. We already ate (3 years ago) at what is now called the #1 in Lima Peru Central which was an experience. But everything Every morsel of food, every presentation of the food was just perfect. It's in a beautiful old stone building in the Chiado area of Lisbon. We started with a selection of beautiful little apps done like chocolates on a candlelabra type ornament. I will Always remember the bite size piece of foie gras wrapped in gold leaf! I had the Evolution tasting menu my hubby the Traditional. Sadly we both had colds so didn't do the wine pairing but did do their non alcoholic pairing! My most memorable dish was this incredible squab (they also called it pigeon as did my hubby - made it a little weird) but Yikes so rich + full of flavor. That + the Foie Gras. They also had a lovely bread service including a delish cornbread. Maybe only kink for me is finding the desserts overly sweet.... They have a box of 4 Bon bons to leave with + a take home menu for memories we surely made. The cost is lots but on a par with the higher end NYC ones. Lastly non pretentious the waitstaff + customers too only saw one Prada handbag! When there it's worth the prices! Sorry can't get more pics in maybe later.
This was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was
This was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was very disappointing. The food was okay, nothing special. An exceptional chef should be able to take ordinary ingredients and add to it. Their dishes mostly did not achieve that; the carrot dish literally tasted like slices of carrots. The fish dish was lacking in flavors. Maybe it's just not suited for us, which is fine. The pace was extremely slow. We sat 30 minutes between some courses. The atmosphere was sterile. But the worst part was the service. 1) From the beginning, our waiter had requested that we notify the staff if we need to step away from the table to use the bathroom so the plates would not be brought out when we are away. The way it was presented to us was somewhat condescending. What is this kindergarten? Is it not the waiting staff's job to observe when we step away? It puts undue pressure on the diners. Things only got worse from here. 2) After the first course, we had some crumps on the table. They were not cleaned. Few more courses later we were served bread, we had some more crumps accumulating on the table. We watched 2 more courses come and go after the bread, and the crumps sat there staring at the us and the waiter. Finally, my friend asked for a sweep, and the waiter did the most inexplicable thing. He cleaned my friend's section and left everyone else's untouched. Maybe he thought the rest of us wanted to savor the crumps for later? 3) Throughout the meal, we also had the pleasure of being accompanied by 2 fruit flies that would occasionally drop by to have a taste of wine and the food. At end of the meal, I expressed my concerns to the service manager, who came off a little defensive regarding point 1, apologized for point 2, and told us they have weekly fruit fly cleaning regarding point 3. We were offered a free drink or tour of kitchen which we declined. Nothing short of cutting our bill would have made up for the poor experience. In addition, one of my friends had a substitute dish and a portion of the dish was left out, and only brought out when we had asked for it. The fish dish was changed to a different fish (seabass) last second, which was different from the menu. We thought to ourselves that maybe we had unreasonable expectations, but we dined at Alma the day after, and the experience was night a day. If you are in Lisbon and want to try one of the two-star Michelin restaurants, PLEASE do yourself a favor and book Alma instead. Crazy considering the two restaurants are next door to each other.
Stunning restaurant well worth a visit.
Thanks to a cancellation, we were able to make it in for dinner. The staff was professional and attentive even though we came in after a day of running around Lisbon and definitely didn't fit in with the other stylish guests. Every dish was interesting, delicious and gorgeous. Lots of little touches and treats in between each course meant that we didn't leave hungry even though we didn't opt for the tasting menu but picked out some dishes ourselves. Definitely worth trying to get in.
What a restaurant! Fantastic food, ambiance and service!
What a restaurant! Fantastic food, ambiance and service! Worthy of two Michelin stars recognition that the restaurant enjoys.
Are here last night while we're eating our way across
Are here last night while we're eating our way across Lisbon. I'd recommend the Evolution tasting menu, which is a little more costly, but such a fantastic way to get a real sense of the Portuguese cuisine experience. The restaurants stone walls and arches only add to the experience. The service was also distinguished and I'd recommend this as a "splurge" to experience both traditional and eclectic cuisine. Such a glamorous place.
Wonderful memory!
We chose Belcanto to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday while visiting Lisbon. I am so happy we did, as this was a dinner to remember and one of my favorite Michelin star restaurants ever. The tasting menu and wine pairing were simply delicious, whimsical, and perfect in every way. The service was impeccable and we really enjoyed learning all about the dishes and wines. We were made to feel special and the energy and vibe were very warm and welcoming. Definitely would come back the next time we visit Lisbon!
An adventure that engaged all of our senses! Great staff and amazing tastes of various foods and wines! Highly recommend
An excellent adventure! Great staff, amazing food and wine tasting experience! Highly recommend and would return next time.
Third star coming…!

Experience the Chef's Table
If I had 10 thumbs, Belcanto would get 10 thumbs up! All I can say is visit Belcanto and if you can, reserve the chef's table - you will be glad you did! It was one of my best food experiences. Each dish was better than the last. The staff was friendly, warm, and a joy to watch in action - thank you! And a special thank you to Nelson, our Belcanto host for the evening. He accommodated our requests for pictures, and even our requests to repeat his description so we could capture it on video (smile). Thank you for elevating our birthday celebration!
This is a wonderful Michelin star restaurant experience.
We are a group of 4 adults and one 4 year old kid. First of all, this restaurant is extremely friendly to kids. My friend's daughter were gave out her paintings to the servers who served us, then she got a box of drawing pens, and the chef came out of the kitchen to meet her and took a picture. The food we had was amazing, most of the food are seafood, the main dish was duck. They were well presented, and the concept of the cooking ideas well delivered. The only thing I was not sure about was the squid ink ice cream. That was new to me, and maybe that was too new to me to accept. The dining area was spacious in side of several dome shape architecture. The architecture was pretty interesting. Overall, it was worth the price and the experience. Highly recommend this place!
4.50 stars. Belcanto is a much celebrated culinary
4.50 stars. Belcanto is a much celebrated culinary achievement in downtown Lisbon. Chef Jose Avillez has become rather legendary for his unique takes on Portuguese cuisine. My friends and I decided on the Chef's Table (which incidentally is located between two kitchen stations so be forewarned its a bit different than a typical Chef's table) and enjoyed a smorgasbord of culinary delights. At restaurants of this magnitude, you can expect many dishes to change over time. But there is one dish that has stayed on the menu since 2008 (with a hilarious name like the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg). To be honest, it was great but my favorite dish of the evening was a scarlet shrimp curry where the curry was made from scarlet shrimp heads. This was easily one of the most concentrated flavors I have ever experienced and quite possibly the best dish I have eaten anywhere. Other standouts included textured carrots, a sole dish in white curry, and a savory pork dessert served with leche de tigre. Was this journey as tightly focused and as inventive as a recent trip to the also well renowned Ocean Restaurant in Lagoa? Reasonable minds can differ. But this is a brilliant meal that showcases evocative flavors and presentations in a manner that only the best can master.
Just the best.
.. Chef Avilés creations and fantastic fusion of flavors and textures delivering the best food in Lisbon.... Just a dream experience..!!! It's worth the experience..!!!
I really wanted to love Belcanto but it didn't live up to
I really wanted to love Belcanto but it didn't live up to the rating or hype. We tried their Chef's Table menu (which is inaccurately named and described as being an in-the-kitchen experience - something the table next to us was fairly upset about too). The first half was very good and provided a lot of delightful moments. Then the second half felt like a general let down. Unfortunately for Belcanto, the reverse can have guests leave with a still positive impression (like A Ver Tavira will do) but this progression from excellent to disappointing had us leaving on a dull note. That said, the interior is beautiful and our general favorite courses seemed to pull from the Evolution Menu so I recommend coming if you're curious and trying that menu instead.
Connect with users posting reservations for Belcanto Lisboa
AppointmentTrader is a community-driven platform where users can exchange their reservations or leverage their personal relationships with Belcanto Lisboa. Buyers can make informed decisions using automated seller ratings, which reflect past transactions and reliability.
Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience
the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.
If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.
Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Belcanto Lisboa at 6 PM the same day.
He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Belcanto Lisboa page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.
That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.
Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.
Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.
2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* MaternalRecord73, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* MaternalRecord73 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to MaternalRecord73 for any questions Peter may have as MaternalRecord73 user fills the bid.
3.) Finding the Reservation
* MaternalRecord73 now uses their connections at Belcanto Lisboa to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If MaternalRecord73 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.
4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, MaternalRecord73 receives the $200 reward which is credited to MaternalRecord73's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Belcanto Lisboa!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
