A Regrettable Evening at Bluefin: Where Hospitality Was Lost
A Regrettable Evening at Bluefin: Where Hospitality Was Lost Our dinner plans for a party of four at Bluefin on the Newport Coast quickly unraveled into an evening we’d rather forget. Entering at 7:30 PM, we expected a leisurely and enjoyable meal, given the restaurant’s stated closing time of 9 PM. What we encountered, however, was a staff seemingly eager to end their shift, leading to a series of unfortunate events that highlighted a glaring neglect for customer satisfaction and basic hospitality standards. The service was the first to disappoint. Our server’s demeanor was far from welcoming; he was brusque, inattentive, and seemingly indifferent to our presence. This attitude was underscored by a failure to take our complete order, setting a tone of disregard that tainted the entirety of our dining experience. Matters escalated when a person, who later identified himself ambiguously as the manager, accused us of berating the server. His refusal to provide his name, alongside his dismissive posture, only added to our growing discontent. This encounter was further soured by a revelation that the real owner of the restaurant was actually present, contradicting the manager’s earlier implication of authority and bringing into question the honesty and transparency of the establishment’s leadership. Our experience was further marred by an unexpected charge for authentic wasabi, a detail unbecoming of a supposedly high-end establishment and indicative of a broader lack of care and respect for patrons. As the night concluded, the departure was no less distressing. The so-called manager continued to demonstrate a profound lack of professionalism, resorting to verbal harassment and unfounded accusations of low class, stemming from our rightful complaints. The culmination of these experiences left us deeply disheartened. Spending $600 on an evening where respect, professionalism, and basic hospitality were conspicuously absent is a grievance no patron should have to endure. It’s bewildering that such an establishment continues to operate in a locale celebrated for its culinary excellence and customer service. In closing, our visit to Bluefin was a stark departure from the standards of dining and hospitality we have come to expect in Newport Coast. It stands as a cautionary tale for those seeking a dining experience that values not just the quality of its cuisine but the dignity and respect of its guests. It is our hope that this account prompts a necessary reflection and realignment of Bluefin’s priorities toward the hospitality values it seems to have misplaced.
Be the first to ReplyOur 4th Visit...
I want to be fair...Waited until our 4th visit prior to commentary. The food is artfully presented, large chunks of very fresh sashimi, nice outdoor dining w/plastic dividers for safety + heaters for comfort. Extensive menu. Very innovative + high quality food.
The organization/service detracts from an otherwise positive food experience. Despite having specific reservations for a specific table configuration we were entirely ignored in January. It led to an awkward situation w/our host + our 2 other guests. Last night we waited 30 mins prior to our Server arriving. Reservations are clumsy + despite confirmation are not always handled accurately.
Reliably outstanding in every respect
We waited outside with a few others until the doors were open for lunch at 11:45 am. Before we entered, we passed a sign saying that Bluefin was awarded one Michelin star in 2019. Agedashi tofu was not on the menu, but they graciously prepared it with a new taste that included a thick tempura sauce. We thought the braised octopus with white rice was excellent. We had mochi ice cream for dessert. They provided a gold-colored Choya Excellent umeshu with ice which tasted both sweet and sour, somewhat like Kokuto umeshu, but not as strong. Service was friendly and professional. Lunch was comparatively expensive, but we feel the reliability, food and service divided by the price equals excellent.
Be the first to ReplyVery good sushi but expensive
Bluefin has very good sushi, excellent fish, but also pricey if you are looking for a quick and cheap bite.
Be the first to ReplyAnother memorable dinner
Not only is service amazing but the Toro nigiri, the tuna, the sauces, you can almost make a meal with any dish on the menu. The atmosphere is always great an perfect to talk and have an amazing atmosphere. The unfiltered cold sake is a thing of beauty. Chef Abe really keeps his restaurant consistent and high quality.
Be the first to ReplyFab Weekday Lunch
Thank you, Bluefin and OC Restaurant Week for the most lovely weekday afternoon meal I have shared with a friend in recent memory. The lomi lomi salmon was clear and fresh with the perfect acid, while the crab claw and tofu were not just beautifully presented, but were perfect bites. The view from the counter and interaction of the sushi chef's was engaging and entertaining. The OC Restaurant Week value and experience were exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyRecent disappointments with service and mixed fish quality
We have been going to Bluefin for mnau years. Our last several visits, however, left us a bit disappointed. One Saturday night a month or so ago, the fish was good but the service was pretty bad: slow, inattentive, and forgetfu, perhaps because it was so crowded. So we decided to stop going over weekends.
This past Tuesday, however, we were back with our neighbors. It wasn’t crowded at all, but service again was disappointing. We had forgotten orders, messed up orders, and confused orders. It was pretty surprising. The tuna, salmon, and yellowtail were fabulous, as usual, but the Spanish mackerel was pretty bad, the salmon roe were fishy and not good, and even the usually excellent albacore was less flavorful and lean.
It feels like Bluefin is slipping in its attention to quality fish and certainly with its service levels. There are a few new servers, and they too often seem forgetful, unaware, and generally not quote up to par.
We are cautiously considering whether or not we will return. For these prices, service should be as excellent as the fish. That hasn’t been the case consistently for a few months at least now.
Dreamy sushi
Chef Abe and his brigade have been at it in Southern California for many years and their current location caters to the well-healed of the Newport Coast with consummate care and panache.
The variety of specialty fish (and other foodstuff) is daunting, and the quality of the preparation and mise-en-place are flawless. The service is courteous, jovial and prompt. The libations on offer are extraordinary and unpretentious, offering an extensive and well thought out list of sakes, as well as premium wines and liquors suited to Abe’s refined cuisine.
Not having visited California for 3 years the experience was a bit of a homecoming.
(I wish Europe had similar sushi quality)
Not my favorite
This restaurant had good reviews so we went. The room was half empty which wasn't a good sign. The restaurant next door had a line at 9pm. We had a variety of dishes. Nothing to die for. Some of the sushi had odd toppings we didn't care for. Service was poor including the waiter squeezing lemon on our fish without asking (I don't like lemon on my fish). He also dropped rice on the head of a woman at the table next to ours. Wine list was fair. Prices were way high, even with the allowance for the high rent for beach views. I would not go back.
Be the first to ReplyBEST Sushi EVER
I have eaten here 50+ times over the years and it NEVER disappoints. Yes, it is pricey but worth it. The house made sauce on the albacore nigiri melts in your mouth. The mushroom miso soup is rich and fantastic. The crunchy spicy tuna is like no other. Even their black edamame and seafood salad are unique. My daughter likes the halibut carpaccio with tiny shaved truffle garnish. The owner, Abe, runs a very consistent and far above average sushi restaurant.
Be the first to Replyskip it too many sushi places with great friendly service and better sushi
Skip this place it is 50-100% more expensive than other great sushi places
Tuna and toro great like every good sushi place. Saki recommendation was a joke at 26 per small flask
Japanese mackeral was old and smell like cat food, This is my second horrible experience here never again
