Rude cashier
Cashier was extremely rude. I ended up paying £9 service charge for a coffee and salad. When I pointed out that this was very overpriced she was rude and dismissive. Won’t be coming back.
Be the first to ReplyBeware of laptop ban and sit-in prices
I went here on the basis of a positive review on a coffee-rating app I use. I was looking forward to sipping a coffee for a short while and making use of the advertised wifi. However, on settling in a comfy seat in the corner and getting my laptop out, I was told laptops were not allowed. On looking more closely, I saw that there were indeed faded, mostly illegible signs to that effect on several of the tables, but I hadn't seen them. The staff member explained that this was to stop people hoggng tables for hours at busy times - of course, that's perfectly understandable, but given that there were several tables free and I was only planning to stay for around 20mins I asked if they could be a bit flexible - the answer was no. I cancelled my order and left disappointed. Of course it is their right to set policies on what you can do in their cafe; it's just a shame that this was not more clearly indicated, and that there was no flexibility for someone not actually causing the problem they were trying to prevent. The fact that the prices are amongst the highest I have ever paid (certainly the most expensive in the UK) makes it all the more galling that a little flexibility couldn't have been shown. Anyone planning to visit should also be aware that the displayed prices are takeaway only: my flat white was £3.80 takeaway but £4.24 to sit in.
Be the first to Replyregular cute cafe
a regular cute cafe, a small downstairs area which is quieter but also staff constantly walking past to get to the kitchen
Be the first to Reply3/10
overrated i will not come again also the stuff was not good the cashier attitude was bad over all i give them 3 from 10 its enough for this place.
Be the first to ReplyWouldn't return
Had come here following a recommendation but unfortunately we were quite disappointed. Ordered 2 drinks and 2 wraps, they brought the wrong drink order for one of us. Only one wrap arrived at first as they only had one on display so the other one came a bit later. 2 of the ingredients listed were not in the wrap as described but also the label on the wrap did not match what was on the menu?! I find this infuriating, as these wraps are clearly made elsewhere but the menu is listing ingredients that are not in it and vice versa. Also I found my wrap to be quite soggy, so I sent it back and asked for a refund as I found it inedible whilst realizing ingredients were different, this could be serious for someone with allergies
Be the first to ReplyAwesome breakfast
Beautiful location by St.Mary's Church. Lovely little cafe with delicious breakfasts all so very tasty and perfectly served. Definitely going back again.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent location and decoration >But food etc Nothing at all Amazing etc
Decided today to visit 3 "bakeries" and see just how "social media " controls a place and customers etc etc . Boxcar was 3rd on the list . It was the most expensive .But at the same time elements of the fixtures and fittings, location etc can take a lot of credit . BUT...... The coffee and the "house specials " etc where no better than many others . Also a lot more expensive .yes...it was rammed with rich Arabs and people that care about the whole"Image, tiktok, instagram" approach to eating out . The food only really needs to be GOOD> lets move back, the first place we visited (Not for the first time ) was " Fortitude" . OK..little bit more "Hipster" .But way superior in EVERY single food item . By some margin. And a lot cheaper . Their customers dont need tables, a few benches or even standing in the street is good enough as they are their really for the FOOD , not the social media experience . So visit Boxcar if "Ambience" is more important and you need tables and chairs and to "Look good"
Be the first to ReplyGreat little find.
Found this little gem of a cafe a short walk from Marylebone station. We sat outside as it was a beautiful sunny morning. The service was excellent and food outstanding. I ordered a flat white coffee and the bacon and egg croissant. Will definitely visit again next time I’m in that area.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming experience
Didn’t feel at all welcome here, the staff weren’t rude but they weren’t engaging. The coffee was ok but they don’t offer syrups which was a shame. The muffin was dry. It’s a clean and attractive cafe that just misses the mark, maybe it was a bad day?
Be the first to ReplyUnexpected pleasure
Owing to the tube strike, I walked from Paddington Station to a meeting. My route took me past Boxcar, somewhere I would never have come across ordinarily. I decided to stop for lunch. Lovely food (fabulous sandwich), friendly staff and a real buzz about the place. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely go again if I’m in the area.
Be the first to ReplyOk coffee
The coffee was fine, however we ordered a banana matcha cake (vegan) and it was super dry and not pleasant to eat… I paid 17£ for 2 cappuccinos and the slice of banana bread, I find it way too expensive
Be the first to ReplyHighly overrated and snobbish
Great food but their success has made them aloof and snobbish. 4.50GBP for a muffin (after a 10 minute wait) is ridiculously expensive even for Marylebone. Although I am a neighbour I will avoid as much as possible.
Be the first to ReplyCoasts on its aesthetic reputation
Boxcar Bakery is a very pretty, albeit rather out of the way, nice spot to enjoy a midday coffee. The staff are about as miserable as you'd expect for those serving primarily a wealthy, snobby, grumpy clientele, and as sympathetic veterans of the hospitality profession, my partner and I decided to let it slide. The desserts are really beautiful, and boasting a wide range of diet-accessible pastries, we were expecting to be a little disappointed in terms of flavour and texture. The chocolate cookie was somehow both dry and oily, but it was to be expected. The matcha brownie was out of this world! Incredibly moist with a light and creamy flavour. The pain au chocolat was OK; it looks very pretty but tastes about average. For such snobby prices I expected the coffee to at least be drinkable, but my espresso was burned - intensely so; meaning that either the puck or the machine itself hadn't been cleaned properly in quite a while. It was so bad I could barely taste the coffee itself. My partner's matcha latte was fine, but with the pleasant surprise of the matcha brownie, we were expecting the same high grade taste and colour - unfortunately not; it tasted primarily of oat milk with a sniff of matcha at the end. It wasn't unpleasant but for the price we paid I would expect better.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent breakfast, a bit pricey
Went here for a breakfast. Located on a beautiful location, with a lot of outside seating, so no problem to find a table for breakfast. Ordering of food done via app, quickly and efficiently, drinks (tea/coffee) arrived immediately after, food took a couple of minutes. So, no problem with the service at all. Was one of the best teas I had in London and the breakfast itself was the best, excellent scrambled eggs with bacon, croissant and tomatoes. Definitely a place I would recommend for eating breakfast, just keep in mind it is not cheap.
Be the first to ReplyPain au chocolat not worth it
Came to try the famous pain au chocolat as I've seen so many pictures of it. The layer of chocolate on the outside gives the impression that there's a thick chocolate layer, but it's paper thin so you barely taste it. The pastry was not warm, not buttery or cripsy, and the chocolate inside was nothing special. At £4.50 it was way overpriced and I definitely wouldn't come here.
Be the first to ReplyLovely place, but sadly very poor service
We wanted to visit this place for some time. Beautiful location and atmosphere and food is not bad either. What will stop me coming back however is the experience we had . We ordered 2 croissant rolls with scrambled eggs and tomatoes - one with bacon and the other with salmon and avocado. What followed was series of mistakes and rude comments: 1. They gave one dish away to another table (the one with smoked salmon and avocado) and brought the one with bacon to us, also with avocado that was NOT ordered. The waiter in white shirt, probably the most professional one there, apologised and said they would quickly prepare the second plate for us. 2. 30 minutes later, a lady came out with three identical plates like the one we were waiting for (with smoked salmon and avocado) and after we told her it's for us she started arguing and told us we were wrong! Then, we were given apology again by the waiter in white shirt that UNFORTUNATELY, THEY AGAIN GAVE OUR FOOD TO SOMEONE ELSE! 🤣 3. A third waiter came and we asked for bill as gave up on getting the food (I ve already finished eating mine, alone). He said, as if it was some grand gesture, that we won't be paying for that dish🤣. So we replied that of course we won't be paying for something that has never been served. We still paid £30 for one dish, 2 juices and even extra £3 for avocado I didnt ask for in the first place, plus almost £4 for service. Waste of time, money and energy. OUTCOME? No matter how nice a place is and how good food is, if the staff is rude, don't own up to their mistakes and make their own customers miserable - there is no point of ever returning. We appreciate the apology from the waiter in white shirt, but it was his two colleagues that should have come and apologise. Very disappointing!

The coffee and location are superb. And the pastries - innovative and delicious. So what's the issue? The service is choppy. Sometimes super friendly - but just as often, cold and rushed and sloppy. This comes from four visits over a week - returning for said good coffee but they don't recognise me (or bother trying). It all makes me feel like a tourist rather than a local. Little things count, too. I have to always remind them to bring the water I asked for. And the time I asked to eat in - they brought my food as a takeaway - the eggs and tomatoes and roll as squished together. Rather than just bringing it back on a plate the server just said 'do you mind eating like this?'
Some good..some not so good. But with more consistent friendly service would be a gem.
Good breakfast
I had a very good breakfast there , they need to focus more on their coffee though , try the beetroot boiled egg !! So good but overall its a nice place.
Be the first to ReplyGreatly needed nice looking cafe in the neighbourhood but such unpleasant service!
Pain au chocolat £4 and un-eatable!
Overpriced but worse of all is the extreme coldness bearing on rudeness of the staff, completely full of themselves because of the success of their little place. It’s a shame because it is such a pretty little coffee shop and a neighbourhood where such offering is lacking.
Disappointed
Really terrible experience. I was recommended to go here but I will definitely not return. Overpriced Terrible Sandwiches and bitter coffee. One star for the clean toilet.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed!!!
Very disappointed!
Opted for a fruit tea that arrived in a grubby Beige coloured mug sitting on what looked liked a dirty wooden chopping board with an equally dirty tea spoon!! Plenty of friendly staff but unfortunately they seemed unable to coordinate what they were each doing.
I certainly wouldn’t rush back!!!
Very good brunch and coffee
Very good brunch and coffee it’s off the beaten path so a great little quiet place for a quick bite and all staff friendly
Be the first to ReplyLovely for a coffee !
This is a lovely little coffee shop and ideal for a break if you’re shopping in the area.
Great selection of cakes/pastries and a clean, contemporary setting.
Boxcar Baker and Deli Review
Only had takeaway coffee here and it was of a good standard. Looks like a nice place to eat in.
Because of the name I was expecting it to be a bakery but it's more of a cafe with the usual pastries. Although they do sell a few types of bread.

Dinner with the family during a brief trip to London. Plates are good, service very good. Great beers. Prices aligned with other restaurants in that area, not cheap but acceptable.
