Sat at the bar/chef's counter.
It was easy to get a last minute reservation. The amuse was a nice little bite. The seam bream appetizer was delicious and my favorite dish of the night for sure. It felt healthy and each bite was balanced and delicious. The burger was very good. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyI felt this is a highly overrated restaurant.
The food is somewhat unique (at least the way it was described) but far from being great. The service was very, very slow. The waiter oversold the dishes and so when we got to eat them they were a disappointment. Ambiance is OK. Not too different from most hip DTLA restaurants. Considering the above, the dishes were totally over priced.

Everyone can get away with it . Other dishes where excellent. Desserts excellent. Service was good. Space is nice.
Be the first to ReplyGreat dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding
Great dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding service! They do have valet, we got street parking but that can be difficult in this area. Drinks: Latin Quarter - my husband thought it was delicious. Like a margarita meets a whisky sour. La Chapelle - my husband also really liked this one. St. Tropez - I ordered this non-alcoholic drink and it was delicious. Not too bitter, which I sometimes feel about drinks with aperol. Food: I'm a vegetarian and my husband is not, so they were able to make some suggestions and accommodations for me which was very helpful. Bread & butter - this was delicious. The butter is mixed with some sort of cheese, it had a sharp cheese flavor to it which I loved, and it paired so well with the honey. Onion Tartine - this was my favorite dish! Soooo good. It comes with a duck broth, but they brought that on the side so I could eat it without the broth. You have to order this if coming here! Burger & Fries - my husband loved this. The cook was a perfect medium rare, how he ordered it. The bun was brushed with duck fat, and the caramelized onions were delicious. The fries were also cooked really well and came with 3 different sauces (ketchup, spicy aioli, and honey mustard). The mushroom dish - this was the vegetarian entree option. It came on top of rice and with a red wine Marsala sauce. It was very good! Potatoes - this was mashed potatoes with herbs, it comes with a demiglasse but they brought that on the side for us since that was not vegetarian. This was also good, though I'd probably skip next time just to save space. Seasonal vegetables - this was smoked asparagus with a bernaise sauce. The asparagus was cooked to perfection! Marzipan - we finished with this dessert, it was a marzipan ice cream encased in lemon shaved iced. Really delicious and super refreshing. Overall, I highly recommend coming here. It felt like fine dining, and they were super accommodating, kind, and answered any questions we had.
Be the first to ReplyMy Fav's French Bistro @ L.
A. Amuse-Bouche (Complimentary) , Tartare "Beef & Herb Tempura" , Scallop "Demi Lune" , Ribeye "Maître D' Butter". Sooo Much Enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent French restaurant in DTLA.
Everything was very good, just extremely pricey and could've been slightly better to justify. The best - Scallop pasta Beef tartare with tempura Onion tart Beef bourlogion Just fine (especially with price) The chicken Dover sole The desserts
Be the first to ReplyCamphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal
Camphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal with friends it definitely earned that Michelin star. They have a fantastic wine list and we ordered a few stellar wines. The space is beautiful and relaxed - not very different from when it was Nightshade. The service was impeccable from the second I walked into the space until we left, full but happy. I had my favorites, including the sea bream, clams, spinach vadouvan (similar to a saag preparation), the scallop pasta dish, bread with the epoisses butter and the oysters are not to be missed. But across the board, the drinks, food and experience was excellent, highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyLoved the decor.
It was clean, streamlined, and chic. I was a bit worried that it might get loud with the pretty high ceiling, but it wasn't too bad. Even the menu was beautiful. We ordered Opera and Le Marais to start, and they were both delicious. We loved the pommes frites and scallop. I don't think I've ever enjoyed ravioli as much before. It was so delicate yet creamy, perfectly showcasing the texture and taste of scallops. The short rib bourguignon was a bit of a disappointment. The gnocchi that accompanied the dish had quite a mushy and unpleasant texture and not much flavor. I did not enjoy it at all. Additionally, the short rib felt a bit overcooked and had a bit too much fat on them. The Kiwi mint dessert was another thing that we did not fully love. The first impression was refreshing and pleasant, but the more I had it, the more it tasted like soap. It was a bit bizarre. Service was awesome. But to be honest, I really didn't appreciate the 3.5% charge on the credit card use - this is not some cheap grab-and-go spot where I might have enough cash to cover. Also, it's one of my little pet peeves when the restaurant's suggested tip is calculated after tax. I know, it's not much. I'm not so concerned about giving a few extra dollars for the tip, but technically I shouldn't have to pay a tip on the tax. It really makes me not want to be more generous.
Be the first to ReplyCamphor was a really good experience all around.
Food, ambiance, service & wine were all great! I had a lot of anticipation since it was a Michelin star restaurant. And I really enjoyed myself. My favorite was the French Onion Tartine. Rich & flavorful, it truly has that "French" appeal. I was very happy with the service, too. They were attentive, but did not rush us. And their pacing of the meal was very good. Sometimes restaurants move a bit too quickly. Camphor was just right. Our party was there for about 3 hours and it felt it went by quick! To me, an enjoyable dinner like this would be between 2-3 hours, closer to the 3 hour mark. I received a text a few days prior asking if we'd like to pre-order any of their specialties. Apparently they run out sometimes. But I don't know if that's true or not. Nonetheless, we chose to pre-order the Dover Sole, Beef Bourguignon & chicken. All three were very good. I asked the server to round out the meal for our party of six, and he nailed the suggestions, including the quantity. We ate everything and were satisfied but not stuffed. Perfect amount of food! Overall, it was a wonderful evening with family at a wonderful place. The ONLY knock would be price. Despite my favorable review, this place is pricey compared to other nice restaurants in the Arts District. Even with its Michelin Star, I feel it could be priced a bit lower. And if it was, perhaps I'd rate it higher. But in today's environment, I do give them credit for how they charge. They do not have any added fees for "better benefits" or "rising labor costs", etc. it's a straight up bill and you can tip as you see fit. They even emphasize that any gratuity goes all to the staff. Bi appreciate that! Just beware that they do pass through a 3.5% fee if you use a credit card. We knew that ahead of time and brought cash! It saved me about $25!! See pics for what we ordered. All were really good. Just wished pricing was a bit more reasonable and it likely would have been a 5 star rating.

We had such an amazing dinner at Camphor, and I love the fact that you can choose from an actual menu unlike many fellow Michelin starred restaurants that employ a fixed/tasting menu. The food was just absolutely amazing, and the service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. We started with oysters and a radicchio salad (kind of like a caesar salad?) followed by the clams with garlic and parsley. We also ordered the scallop demi lune and the steak au poivre (filet mignon) with a side of pomme frites. Everything was super delicious but I think my favorites were the clams and the steak au poivre with the pomme frites. The steak was just done so perfectly and I think pomme frites were the best "fries" I've had in a while. They have a great selection of wines and instead of going with the wine pairing option, we decided to just order glasses individually with recommendations from the server all of which we really enjoyed. Overall it was just a great experience, and I can see myself come here again and again in the future!
Be the first to ReplyAwesome restaurant.
Very cool space. Nice and bright. The onion tartin is a must order....as is the bread. The baguette comes with bordier butter that they mix with a funky cheese and its just amazing. Tartare is good but I don't think its a must - nice change of pace to serve w fried herbs vs bread. Loved the lentils and lamb. Reminded me of an indian dish. Would order again. It was very unnecessary but our party of 4 got the ribeye special. Great steak. Insanely tender. The only two items that I didn't love were the scallop stuffed pasta (shockingly a little fish), and the mushroom entree which I just didn't really understand. The bread pudding is an absolute must. Must must order. $$$$
Be the first to ReplyTo be honest I was disappointed with my experience.
We arrived at 5:30pm and left at 7:38pm because of the food being delayed. The food was served quick the first 20mins, then it took 30mins for the onion tartine to be served. Another 30mins after the onion tartine for the scallop to be served and 15mins after the scallop for our steak to arrive. The scallop bread arrived after we finished our scallops. I waited more than 1hr and 30mins to get my main entree and by that time I was full and I ate it with no appetite. Another issue was I kept on getting dirty fish smelly platters. I returned the first two times then i ignored the smell and I used the dirty smelly plate anyways. The appetizers were great, my wife loved them all. The steak was average. The desserts were disappointing, I love chocolate and I couldn't have more than few bites it. The kiwi ice cream was good though Our server Erika was nice and considerate and she comped our desserts.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding dinner tonight at Camphor.
Onion and Gruyère Tartine, Steak aux poivre, creamed spinach, and pomme frites were excellent. Chocolate Hazelnut creation plus a bonus bread pudding ended the meal perfectly. Service and atmosphere were first rate. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed our dinner at Camphor, especially on a busy
Really enjoyed our dinner at Camphor, especially on a busy weekend night. Great vibe in the room and the custom martini is a must. The service felt a little rushed at first but the dishes were mostly outstanding. My biggest complaint (and this goes with all restaurants that have this policy) is that if you are going to automatically add a 20% service fee for a party of ANY SIZE PLEASE add the word ADDITIONAL next to TIP on the actual credit card bill. Otherwise it's very confusing and even awkward at times. Good work, folks. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyWhile the food was mostly very good, the service was not.
The dinner was rushed, the salad course arriving simultaneously with the main course, despite my request to not overlap. If you must go, try the lentils.

Camphor is located in the former Nightshade space! If you don't arrive early, just go straight for the valet parking as it's always difficult to find a spot nearby! All the food was delicious and it was nice to see some Asian flavors mixed in! It's not often I find a restaurant that incorporate Asian fusion well into their dishes.

Be the first to ReplyVisiting Camphor was not exactly on my radar.
Located in the Arts District, it's hidden in a side alley and quite a beautiful restaurant inside. Bread (4/5) Bubs and Gma with acacia honey and butter. The baguette was crisp and chewy. With butter and honey it was simple and tastyClams (2/5) small overcooked clams with no real flavor because of some green topping that overwhelmed the dish but not in a good way. My clams had grit which was not palatable. Worst dish of the night Onion tartine (4/5) tasted like a deconstructed French onion soup. A large chewy slice of bread covered in gooey Comte and tuyere cheese then drizzled in a savory onion sauce. Yummy!Seasonal vegetables (3/5) I was confused by this dish. It looked like a bowl of deep fried onions but was crispy seasonal vegetables. Very small and not that great. Potatoes (3/5) soft mashed potatoes in a truffle sauce. It was just ok.Spinach (5/5) delicious! Maybe my favorite dish of the night next to the chicken. Flavorful and just perfect. Burger (4/5) duck burger with frites. Exactly what I was hoping for in a burger. Flavorful and juicy. This was a satisfying dish. Steak au poivre (3/5) it was tender and had decent flavor. I was hoping for more but overall a decent steak. Chicken (5/5) this dish was soft and tasty. It looked like a deboned chicken roulade. I don't exactly know what it was except it was very tasty. If I return, I'd get the chicken and spinach which were by far the best dishes of the night. Seasonal tart (3/5) it looked like a tart was flipped over so all you saw was the crust. Filled with fresh berries and a light crème patissier, it was a good sweet bite. Bread pudding (4/5) warm and comforting like a hug with gooey chocolate. I liked this dessert a lot and I don't normally like bread pudding. Overall, the food was very good. It was French but not pretentious or over the top. Nearly everything (except the clams) was tasty and well executed. Service was impeccable. Water was constantly filled and our plates and utensils were changed frequently. Probably one of the most attentive places service-wise that I've experienced in LA. Parking is pretty much valet ($17) unless you are lucky to find street parking. This area is congested with cars and very little street parking options. The valet was very friendly and fast so that made it a pleasant experience. Camphor is a place I'd definitely return to for a special dinner with friends. We all enjoyed our meal and had a lovely time. Wow!!!! This place is the bomb!!!Started with a delicious shaved ice tequila cocktail with sage on top and then sat at the chefs counter to watch the desserts being made last night. Starters were fries with 3 sauces later yummy crispy little baked clams, and beef tartar as apps Main courses were chicken and steak cooked perfectly! The amount of work that goes into these dishes is crazy and you can taste it. Loved loved loved! Our waiter Paul, was awesome. Explained all so wellCLEANEST restrooms ever (what can I say? Not a fan of unisex bathrooms but this was great) My only regret is that I left my doggy bag
Be the first to ReplyJust wanted to discuss the truly exceptional meal I had
Just wanted to discuss the truly exceptional meal I had last night at Camphor. From the moment I saw the entrance door, I was already so excited to finally be there. Once I was actually seated, I was just taking in the atmosphere of the place. It's a beautiful space and there was just a very exciting vibe all around. I love a fine dining restaurant with an open kitchen. I love witnessing the beautiful chaotic symphony that is a kitchen during service. The sounds, the sweat, the teamwork. So much attention to detail and excellence. It was great to watch, especially with Chef Max at the helm the whole night. My server/bartender queen was Eva and she was one of the best parts about this experience. First of all, all 3 drinks she made were DIVINE. Each one was beautifully balanced while still delivering a slowly unfolding buzz. She was also great company during the 3 hours I spent here. Super knowledgeable about the menu and she answered all my questions effortlessly & confidently. The food...wow. It had been such a long time since I had eaten a meal like this. One of those core memory dinners that really impacts you in an amazing way. It takes your tastebuds on an adventure, expands your mind and inspires you to be better. That's how I felt. Starting with the amuse bouche, I was already sold on my whole meal. From this one bite I already knew I was in for something special. It was the perfect precursor to the meal as it was simple yet intricate and complex. Just like everything else here, it was a work of art brought to life with beautiful ingredients, talent, technique, and finesse. The Barbajuan with Snail was the first item I received. Perfect snack with my Louvre cocktail. I don't know what kind of pastry they used for this dish but it was so delicate and perfectly crisped. Next up was the Silver Anchovy with "gunpowder". This is something I wasn't even considering ordering but Eva totally sold me on it the way she described it to me with all the different things that make up that gunpowder seasoning. Also, she had me at "deep-fried". It was truly one of the most unique food experiences I've had and I'll never forget it.I switched to an Old Fashioned next and those are either awful or excellent. Eva's was indeed excellent. Perfectly executed but you still wince a bit when you take a sip. Just how an Old Fashioned should be. As I was sipping, my Onion Tartine showed up. I had my phone ready to take a video of that pour. I've seen this online so many times and I was so happy to finally get to eat it. It was insane. Of course, the bread from Bubs was amazing, the onions were caramelized so perfectly, and the CHEESE!! Oh man, the cheese. It was so beautiful. The viscosity of the liquid (not to mention the flavor)! A simply stunning dish. My Scallop main was the next course and it was also stunning. Those delicate little dumplings were nestled in an exquisite beurre blanc for which I used the house bread to soak up every last drop. Pretty sure the dish team didn't have to wash that one. So good. The chocolate dessert my favorite. They're usually so heavy and decadent but this was quite the opposite. It was so light, luxurious and my mouth is watering now as I type this. The chocolate marshmallows were my favorite part along with the crunch from the nuts. Such a great concoction. The kiwi dessert was another one I had seen a lot online so I couldn't wait to try it. I feel like kiwi is so underrated and it's never really showcased in pastry so I'm glad it got its shining moment here. The mint was a great accompanying flavor and the sorbet was killer. Very cool, refreshing and clean. The seasonal fruit tart was the 3rd one I ordered. All your traditional fruit tart components hidden under a thin, beautiful pastry shell. There's not much more to say here. Fruit, custard, and crispy pastry - total winner. The marzipan one was my least favorite, simply because I'm just not really a shaved ice kinda guy. It was also cool and refreshing but I would prefer something along the lines of the kiwi dessert. The ice cream was great and so was the texture of it.I think the Brioche Bread Pudding should be a staple here forever. It's one of those dishes that should be essential to the experience of a restaurant - something that everyone should try. I loved the simplicity of it and the chocolate pieces throughout. I should also add that I ate the leftovers this morning and it was honestly even better than fresh out of the oven. I had such a phenomenal experience. There was not a single underwhelming moment whether it came to the food, service, or ambience. To make an amazing night even better, I got to meet Chef Max himself and thank him in person for the excellence I just experienced.Again, congrats on that well-deserved Michelin and keep up the great work!
