My husband and I decided to visit Nashville and opened the option for travel to friends who are fast fulfilling their bucket list. First time visiting Nashville after the Covid shutdown this past week to be with a friend who is battling cancer and has never been to country music central. During our four day excursion we visited many local restaurants, museums and music venues. We enjoyed the Music Hall of Fame where a Gibson was purchased and sent home, we wandered from one Honky Tonk to another enjoying the talent and food choices, and we went on a fabulous Brewery and Distillery Bus tour. All great fun. After the bus tour we asked about a good restaurant for some great food. We were looking for something more upscale then the offerings in the local pubs and were provided rave reviews of a restaurant named “City House”, a higher end, Italian cuisine with a nice atmosphere. We showed up at there location and were seated outside in an screened outdoor area with 5 tables. We were the only people in the outdoor seating area. As we sat reviewing the menu and deciding what we will have for dinner the music outdoors got extremely loud and vulgar. It was Rap music, and as it told its derogatory story about women, it became so uncomfortable we turned the outside speaker down. We had asked if the music could be changed to dinner music or soft rock and we were told no the kitchen crew decides the music. They proceeded to turn the offensive music up loud again, not sure if they realized how loud and uncomfortable the experience was for us, I don’t use the “N” word and I take great offense in its use no matter who uses it. They certainly did not care. With that, my husband just unplugged the speaker so nothing was playing. This must have affected the entire restaurant as they came out an plugged it back in. We asked again can you please put dinner music on instead we were told they could not as we were not the only people in the restaurant. We then said ok can we speak to your manager. The manager of City House, a 40ish white female came out to the screened area, arms crossed and face a sour. We asked kindly at first if we could just change the music to dinner music, soft rock or easy listening as we were in a higher end restaurant and expected a peaceful evening. She then proceeded to call us racist and that she was highly offended by our request. Shocked by her reaction we responded with, that’s fine, we did not need to eat there so we stood up and said ok please give us our check for our drinks and we will leave. Then it became really ugly, as we gathered our things, grumbling and offended ourselves, the comment that this was the type of music one would expect to be in a night club in the city, “you would be worried your tires would be gone when you left”, now that another was the trigger. The Manger had a tirade calling us white supremacist and stormed away. She returned in a huff with a check turned face down as we stood being berated for requesting the music change by the hostess and servers, even a cook came out of the kitchen to escalate the chaos. The manager of this establishment purposely charged $163 for 2 ice teas, a seltzer water and a beer. When we asked she take the bill back and adjust it to the correct amount she walked away and sent over several people from the kitchen. They then told us to leave even called the police, we were fine with them calling as they were committing fraud by over charging us for appetizers and entrees we never saw. They screamed at us that we are the cause of systemic racism. We explained we are in an Italian Restaurant and only asked the music be changed to dinner music. I would not expect Screamo genre of rock music to be playing as I enjoy my tiramisu, it’s completely inappropriate, as was the behavior of every employee of the City House restaurant. The attacks and unsubstantiated cry of racism by five young white people was applauding and disturbing in tandem, the inexperience of what true racism is becomes watered down when such behavior occurs. “Wokism” destroyed our evening and probably others as well, diluting racism for their own agenda. I will never go back, the experience was truly disturbing.
