This place is a hoot! Totally unexpected. Loved the huge fireplace, and the atmosphere is so cool! We were on a wine tour with a local guide who brought us here for one last stop on our tour. It took the cake!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Great welcome! Magical place even if the road at night is very difficult. On the other hand, the quality of the food / the price is not up to the quality. Any meat: steak for $42 with bรฉarnaise sauce liquid like water... too bad.
Be the first to Reply15 minutes from Santa Barbara, but it feels like 100 miles from anywhere!
It is the absolute best spot on the California Coast! You HAVE to stop by....Great music, great food, full bar, and in a most beautiful outdoor/indoor location by the creeks, and the trees....Honestly I have played many venues in my life, and this is as good as it gets...No cover for music....Great people watching, the most excellent food and drink.....Plus being away from the world for an afternoon= Precious...:)
Be the first to ReplyOkay, I guess?
No to sure what all the hype is about. We walked around, but unless you're there to have a drink and/or eat, there really isn't much to it. We read a lot of reviews about the onion rings, but didn't try them. Maybe some other time.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, okay experience, fun drive up from Santa Barbara
Good meal, okay service, decent value, somewhat difficult to park at (can't be helped because of the landscape), service could be better (but that's true everywhere these days). If you're staying in the Santa Barbara area, the drive up there alone is worth the trip. Eating outdoors in the shade was nice, but we also had to deal with annoying flies.
Be the first to ReplyParking a major negative
We had hoped to enjoy a pleasant and tasty lunch based on other reviews. Unfortunately, we arrived at about 12:30 pm Strongly suggest if you are going make sure you arrive between 11 and 11:30 am. Taking Stagecoach road off of the main highway you come to a sign saying Road Closed and another sign saying the Tavern is open. If you have not been there before you might turn around assuming Road Closed. But ignore that sign and head down the road a few miles. You will likely start to see cars parked on the side of the road. Grab a space if you find one. We passed the Tavern and went the equivalent of 1500 yards and still couldn't find a space and then found it difficult to locate an area to turn around. Heading back towards the tavern we saw a handicap marked space which would be great as my wife qualifies. Unfortunately someone had parked right in the middle of two spaces so not enough room to park.

We were on a wine tour and our guide encouraged us to try this place...SO COOL! Oldest tavern in California, I'm told. Love the atmosphere...wish we could have stayed longer!
Be the first to ReplyBest tritip sandwich
Easily the best tritip sandwich Iโve ever had. The meat was nicely seasoned and prepared over wood fire, super tender, the bread was perfect (it was light but held together great and nicely toasted), the bbq sauce and apple horseradish sauce brought it home. It was awesome!

First, this place is really up in the hills. Cute creek ambling thru the parking area. We had a reservation, thank goodness, but when we arrived, they said someone was still at our table. We could take a two top in the first room, but we have 3 people. I went out to use the restroom and when I came in, they had a wonderful table across from the fireplace for us. Since it's a very chilly, windy and rainy night, this table was perfect. Great wine list. Good bread basket. A light colored bread and a molasses bread, both tasty. Daughter got the Vegetarian Pasta. It's a lot. Husband got the Chicken. I had a wonderful Ceasar Salad and I ordered the Tritip Platter. Everyone talked about it at several of our wine tastings. Alas, my tritips were pretty tough. They looked perfected pink, but I could hardly cut them with a knife. The horseradish sauce was great. Loved my Fess Parker white wine and loved being across from the fireplace. And I am glad I came because this is a gem of a place because it's so different, and it's so tucked into the hills.
Be the first to ReplyAn Experience unlike the rest
I literally donโt know where to start. It was a cold, quiet night. We got a little lost getting there due to a road closure. We were arriving towards the end of their seating time which we were unaware of. So parking was easy, and on our short walk to the little cabin restaurant, a man in the street with a flashlight tells us to move to the other side, because there was a bear. A bear? What? Seriously, there was a black bear, just standing casually 20 feet off the road. He was just hanging out and didnโt seem to mind anything, but it was surreal for us. Entering the cabin we were immediately greater by a warm fire, cozy atmosphere and a friendly waiter/bartender. We didnโt have a rez and it was almost too late, but he sat us anyway. He was delightful. After quickly ordering drinks, some amazing, fresh warm homemade bread arrived. I could have been happy eating just that. But the warm delicious drinks followed by incredible food meant we left stuffed! The tri tip was smokey and sweet, garlic mash and asparagus both super tasty. And the chicken filled with something like a cherry compote/stuffing?? then smothered in a mushroom sauce, yum. The atmosphere is charming, quaint, quirky and so very memorable. Itโs off the beaten path, and so very much worth the journey. An experience to be sure, and one not to be missed. Loved everything.
Be the first to ReplyVery unique, historic, cool place. Tasty burgers!
This is a hidden gem. Been going here since college at UCSB in the early '80's. Great spot, hidden in the canyon, with yes, a cold spring running through the property. Great rustic location, well worth the short trip off the 154.

Save yourself well over an hour and make a reservation 1st. It is really busy and seating is at a premium. Donโt kid yourself, this is located in a mountain setting. Dress accordingly especially if itโs been/is raining. The area is very muddy. Parking is at a real premium and expect that youโll be walking and parking along the street ~ 1/4 mile away. Once inside expect really good food and lots of it. The place is charming and unforgettable. Highly recommend the tri tip sandwich and onion rings. You really need to go.
Be the first to ReplyWorth a stop!
Definitely worth a stop. My husband and daughter split a tri tip sandwich and loved it. Onion rings were amazing as was their grilled cheese with roasted red peppers and onion jam. Great people watching! Great array of beers.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed.
Very dsappointed. Had been for dinner years ago before owner changed.. Then food was very good and feeling wad upscale. This time went for lunch. Waitress and host were nice. Chili very average and not hot; ribs had sauce like catsup. Fries seemed like they were out of freezer.Small glass of wine for $11.50. Place seemed run down. Diner type atmosphere. Plastic table cloths. Outside view unkempt. Definitely not for foodies.
Be the first to ReplyGreat all around experience
This is a very cool place; the restaurant, the bar, and the band. Food is great, people are great and the band is fun.
Be the first to ReplyRustic buildings in canyon down narrow winding road
Paxton server and Rae in bar was attentive and accommodating. We did not care for venison stuffed mushrooms; the meat was rare. Paxton removed from ticket as we each only had one. Hubby liked onion rings and the tri tip platter and pecan pie. Rabbit medallions were dry and salty. The grounds housed historic stagecoach era buildings. Unfortunately it was 85 degrees and 85% humidity so very hot in dining area. Entertainment was the arriving wedding party.
Be the first to ReplyGreat hidden location
Great location, the food was good. I had the tri tip and my wife had the French dip. We went on a Thursday for lunch, not too busy. Lots of birds and trees. There were some flies that we on everything.

So, East Coast guy here visiting the Santa Barbara area with my girlfriend. Her Uncle, very familiar with the area, showed us around and made a point of bringing us here to try the tri tip BBQ. We visited on a Saturday around 2pm. It was busy, but not overcrowded. We had to park further down the road but certainly within a 2-minute walking distance. The tri tip sandwich is what you want to come here for. It's loaded with meat and there is a toppings station to apply your favorite sauce. I would highly recommend the Apple Horseradish sauce and if chosen, be sure to put plenty of it on top. The meat and bread soaks it in quickly and my biggest regret was not loading it up with more sauce. There is live music and a general sense of "fun" at this hidden stop. Make a point of visiting here.

Loved this former stagecoach stop. Food was tasty; waiter was excellent; scenery was incredible. Well worth the trip.

Got this place recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. The place is super cute and cozy. The service was great and the staff very helpful. The food was amazing and the portions were good. Found the parking easy. Can definitely recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyPoor Customer Service and Food was ok
The woman selling the tri-tip sandwiches yesterday was rude and made my group want to leave and eat in the car. We were sitting outside on a bench about to eat the tri-trip sandwhiches when she came running up to us yelling, "HEY! HEY! HEY!" It seemed like everyone around us turned to look at our group. She said, "You can't bring your own beverages. This is a restaurant, not a park." Why not calmly walk up to us and not make a scene? Why run and start screaming from 15 feet away? This could have been avoided with a sign and some common courtesy. It ruined the meal and we will never come back.
Be the first to ReplyUnexpected Delight
If youโre in Santa Barbara or on your way to the wineries of Santa Ynez, this is a must visit restaurant. Tucked in the Santa Ynez mountains about 15 minutes out of Santa Barbara, this historic stage coach stop offers history, great food, cold beer, and a friendly staff. My friends and I had their famous tri-tip sandwich which was on a fresh, crusty roll and served with three yummy sauces: creamy mustard seed; barbecue; and salsa. Our sides ranged from coleslaw to fresh greens and potato salad. All was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyHidden gem in the hills
Came here with the wife for lunch. Made reservations weeks ago yet there were already 30+ people waiting when we arrived. Had to wait at least 20 minutes for a table. After finally seated, we shared the French dip sandwich and fries and a cup of chili. The thick cut tri tip was cooked perfect for a sandwich, smoky, tender and well seasoned. The chili was tomatoe based, with beans, ground beef and the right amount of spices. The service was ok. Had to wait for drinks a couple of different times. Other than that, this is a hidden gem that is a must visit if on highway 154!
