The food was delicious though several dishes were a bit
The food was delicious though several dishes were a bit salty for my taste. Each dish was presented very beautifully but the cohesion of the dishes confused me. Regardless, everything was delicious and you wouldn't know it in the beginning, but the entire seated course is very filling that I could've probably just went with the bar seated course. The service was great but not interactive. Definitely a place to try since it is the only Michelin starred restaurant in the East Bay.

Be the first to ReplyDate of Visit: 3/5/2024 We visited the 2 Michelin Star
Date of Visit: 3/5/2024 We visited the 2 Michelin Star restaurant Commis to celebrate our Anniversary. Commis was established in 2009 and was awarded with 1 Michelin star during the same year, and won the recognition of 2 Michelin stars in 2016. It is the only restaurant with a Michelin Star in the East Bay area! Head chef and owner is James Syhabout, and some of the dishes and cooking methods reflect the background of Syhabout, who has a Thai mother and a Chinese father. Tasting Menu is priced at $225 per person with an optional beverage pairing of $119 per person. My husband got the beverage pairing and I ordered one cocktail and one glass of wine throughout the course. Commis Restaurant was separated into two areas. One is the bar area with a high top and chandelier. The other area with the open kitchen is the main dining room. Interior has dark wood paneling, and fresh flowers and candles on every table. My husband ordered the beverage pairing for $119, with mostly white wines from different regions around the globe, and with one GSM red wine, one California's sake and one port style dessert wine. I ordered one refreshing cocktail, Nothing Like a Nice Pear $21, to pair with the appetizers. And during the main course, I ordered a glass of the Pilcrow printer's devil cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley for $30. Caramelized onion financier with sour cream Pacific Oyster with local kiwi & coconut Watercress wafer with salmon roe & fresh horseradish First course is a combination of three tiny plates, with oyster, salmon roe wafer, and financier. Hokkaido scallop with kaluga caviar, prawn gelee & makrut lime One of my favorite courses of the day. The mixed texture of scallop and caviar was amazing. Monterey bay abalone with hot mustard & celtuce Another favorite of mine! The abalone with the spicy mustard and flowers was full of surprises. Dungeness Crab & Chrysanthemum soup, celeriac & meyer lemon This dish is the soup of the day. Green celeriac soup with Dungeness crab inside. On the side were dried chrysanthemums, which are for decoration purposes, but the smell of the flowers is at the nose with every sip. Slow poached egg yolk, smoked dates, alliums & malt The next dish came with a bowl of slow poached egg yolk and a warm bread. Steamed Cod with Potato & Clam, toasted curry with lemongrass This one has a taste of Thai cuisine. Toasted curry and lemongrass mixed with all the air bubbles; the slow cooked steamed cod was in the middle. Roast Heirloom Chicken, Sunchokes with Koji & Green garlic, black truffle The main course is roast heirloom chicken. The mixture of the softness and chewiness of the chicken skin was great! In the middle was the black truffle sauce that went very well with the chicken. Scallion Rice, chanterelle mushroom miso from shared cultures, chicken broth The last savory course is the scallion rice. The flowers and vegetables added some color to the seasoned rice. On the side was a warm chicken broth, great paired with the rice. Matcha with soybean milk, fermented black bean caramel First dessert is the match ice cream with fermented black bean caramel and soybean milk. Coffee, Dried Plum & Black Garlic Waffles The main dessert is coffee ice cream with dried plum. In the middle is a crunchy waffle with black garlic inside. And to celebrate our Anniversary, there is a wafer cookie with honey and top and Jasmine ice cream in between. Calamansi & Fish Sauce Caramel Lotus Cookie Coconut, Pineapple & Absinthe Capsule Last dessert is some finger bites. The lotus cookie was tasty and the coconut and pineapple capsule was one of my favorites too!
Be the first to ReplyCame back to try the more limited bar prix fixe menu.
This is a shorter more casual experience than in the main dining room, but delivers on the fine dining aspects and still comes with a beverage pairing. We added on the caviar option to the four course menu, which was a perfect bite. Not to be outdone, from the small bites was a wagu beef tartare which ranks at the top of my list for umami taste and texture. The big eye tuna salad is a marvel and was followed by the slow poached egg yolk (which appears to be a menu staple), a steak and desert. The desert was the only miss for me. The drink pairing with a yuzu sake and combined with the lemon posset needed something to break up the tartness - like ginger snap, or less yuzu. But that is probably just a personal preference, the experience is still worth it. The staff were awesome too and always ready to engage and answer questions. So glad I found out about this bar service. A great option if the full menu is too much food or time and you still get that to die for bread and butter.

This place is special, and deserves every accolade it has received. Go with an open mind, and a full wallet. Explore the menu on your own, or ask your server for suggestions. You'll have a great dining experience in this chic culinary sensation on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland
Be the first to Replyfood is amazing and well plated even for takeout.
Everything is fresh and it's worth all the stars and one of the few super fine dining places in Oakland.
Be the first to ReplyI dined here back in August and got the tasting menu.
It was a very creative meal and I loved that I got to try new ingredients for the first time, such as, lotus root and guinea hen. Their signature dish, slow poached egg yolk with smoked dates, alliums, and malt was one of my favorite things that I ate all year, it was true perfection. I also especially loved the tomatoes with oysters, scallion rice, celtuce with mussels, and the pain perdu dessert. Commis was also a pretty good price compared to the other 2 michelin starred restaurants in the area.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a really nice, exquisite, and classic fine dining
This is a really nice, exquisite, and classic fine dining restaurant and in all places in Oakland. The food is delicious and the menu fresh and inviting. The service is impeccable as well.
Be the first to ReplyFood - We had the tasting menu at the bar area.
Tomato dish (in the pic ) was the best of all:) I would have preferred Kumamoto oyster without the watermelon topping though. Mocktail looked beautiful:) Service- I wish I asked his name, but one of the bartenders/servers there with ponytail was sooooo amazing. We loved his enthusiasm and love for food as he was speaking to us. He made food sound so delicious even before we tried:) Ambiance - was great and chilling grown up atmosphere:)
Be the first to ReplyI was happy that I was able to reserve bar seating super
I was happy that I was able to reserve bar seating super last minute. I originally wanted to do the full tasting menu, but reservations on Tock only has option for a party of 2-4 and I mostly fly solo when having these tasting menus. However, I was thoroughly satisfied with the bar prix fixe and wine pairings. EVERYTHING was creative and delicious!!! And all the team members were very nice! Parking is street parking, but there is also a Kaiser parking structure around the block.
Be the first to ReplyI already gave a completely accurate 5 star review.
I'll add to it that Commis has a knack for keeping the great things consistent and mixing it up in all the right places. They tweak the menu, some of the concepts (the new fixe prix bar menu is a revelation), the wine list. If you go to Commis and then go there again in three months, everything you love will still be there and there will be new things to love as well.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is wonderful but too rich for me .
You're outside tables are nice, but can be very cold in the winter.
Be the first to Replyi've added photos of a few of the dishes we've had.
for the amuse bouche:all were good, enjoyed them all somewhat equally. guava ice with oyster was an interesting combination but helped bring a good flavor combination with the brininess of the oyster and subtle sweetness of guava icegreen onion: reminded me of green onion crackers i had as a child. pleasant surprise, my favorite of the three shiso leaf and tartare: shiso leaf flavor was initially a bit weird but then it was ok. tartare was good but felt a bit salty at some points dungeness crab with pomelo: crab was very sweet, don't taste much of the pomelo and the upper layer of jelly is a bit flavorless. highlighted the freshness of the crab pretty well, you could taste the sweetness of it. simple dish in terms of flavor complexity but was a nice start to the night 8.5/10beetroot: beetroot has a really nice natural sweetness with a nice assortment of flavors from the glaze. there were baked(?) leaves that added a nice subtle flavor and crunch to the beetroot. would have preferred if the leaves were a bit crispier but it was a nice addition 9/10beluga caviar with parsley root and dill: all around very solid dish. caviar was meant to be the star of the show and the white mash around it definitely helped showcase it. i'm not one to normally order caviar, but this dish was nice and i enjoyed it. the dill green sauce around the edges added a little bit of briny flavor to an otherwise quiet dish. 9/10pork and tapioca dumpling reminded me of a chinese style meatball with rice around it. i enjoyed it but it was an interesting texture combination with the pork and tapioca ( and i believe there was mochi inside as well). pork was a little bit sweet, reminded me of cha-shu. good but did not blow me away 7/10egg yolk: amazing dish. the egg yolk was soft but still solid, and the white sauce around it paired well. i enjoyed the crispy bits and onions around it, and when you dig deeper into the white sauce you get a bit of sweet jam, which was a nice contrast to the richness of the egg and white sauce. this dish was amazing, both visually and taste wise 10/10bread and butter: i thought the previous dish couldn't be beat but i have to reconsider after having their house made bread and butter. i was literally speechless after one bite, the inside is perfectly fluffy and the outside is the most perfect crispy crust. i'm not sure how they did it but they found the perfect balance to make the crust perfect crisp while also not hurting the roof of my mouth. wow, this might be the best bread i've ever had in my life 10/10grilled monkfish with dashi glaze: thought this dish was ok. the flavors were good but i'm not normally a fan of cooked fish(besides maybe miso cod). the texture of the monkfish was more chewy and meaty than i expected, maybe even a bit like juicy chicken breast. there were small pieces of cauliflower but i don't think they added much this was probably one of my least favorite dishes 5/10grilled pork belly: looked like ham, tasted a bit like ham too. thought it could've have used more sauce, the meat ended up tasting a bit dry and i would've liked a drizzle of the sauce on top. the overall dish wasn't bad but i don't really like ham so that kind of threw me off. 5.5/10mushroom scallion fried rice w/ chicken broth: i also got the truffle supplement with this dish for 35 dollars extra. the truffle was mixed into the fried rice but honestly i couldn't really taste it. the fried rice was good and had the scallion flavor in it, but otherwise felt kind of boring. the chicken stock helped make the overall dish a little saltier but in the end it was still rice with scallion oil flavor. the sugar peas were refreshing and added a bit of sweetness 6.5/10chrysanthemum ice cream with mango marmalade and other stuff: not really a fan of chrysanthemum, kind of reminded me and soap. the mango marmalade was tart and the ice cream at the bottom was sweet. i could taste a bit of salt too. the flavor combination was good but honestly chrysanthemum threw me off too much to really enjoy this dessert3/10ice cream sandwich: tasted like an elevated choco taco. flavors were simple but i enjoyed it a lot. 8/10toast with passion fruit + durian cream: i don't remember the name of it so i'll just call it toast. i really liked the cream, although i didn't get much durian flavor. the toast was ok on its own, definitely needed the cream to add some flavor to it. 6.5/10final small dessert bites: they were all small. enjoyable but nothing much to write about. favorite was the coconut herb ice tube overall rating: 4/5i would've given the first half of the meal a perfect 5/5, but i didn't enjoy the second half of the meal as much.in terms of service, staff were friendly and talkative, did not judge us for wearing sweatshirts and jeans to a fine dining restaurant ambiance was a bit dimly lit as you would expect from a fine dining restaurant
Be the first to ReplyOne of the greatest meals I've had in recent history.
The food was beyond expectations and closer to what I had experienced at three star restaurants rather than two. Each dish was wonderful and a piece of art. Some were playful even. They had quite an interesting pairing, everything from beer, to wine to sake which we enjoyed. As far as ambience is concerned it's got a urban feel and the restaurant is not necessarily a quiet place but it's still comfortable. We will certainly be back.
Be the first to ReplyWe selected this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary.
We wanted to support Asian chefs and loved the idea of asian flavors being incorporated into high end food. I had such high expectations given that this is a two Michelin starred fine dining establishment. And I'm having so many mixed feelings about it. I spent over $650 and truthfully, I appreciate the effort behind the scene but I don't think it's worth it.. Service: all the staffs were very welcoming and attentive. Although the main male staff who helped my table seemed a little condescending. When I would ask a question, he answered it in a rushed way and it felt like I bothered him. At one point, I saw another staff's friendliness and wished that we were his table instead. They sat us next to each other and when they brought out our courses, only one of us can hear the explanation at a time. So half the time, I couldn't really understand what I was supposed to be tasting. Interior: Very comfortable seats and the lighting is excellent to take picture of the food. Our table faced a wall and we were sat next to each other. It was a little weird to look up and see a wall constantly. Thankfully my partner and I can keep a conversation with each other. Food: First, let me start off by acknowledging that I am just a person who likes to try new food and appreciate flavor combinations. I'm sure this place was awarded Michelin stars for many reasons. My partner and I are huge foodies and we always embrace various ingredients and flavors. The Kusshi oyster was refreshing and loved the texture. The shiso leaf bite was a bit off putting because the size of the leaf overpowered all the other finer details. The Dungeness crab tasted really fresh and it was well rounded. Same with the beetroot. Great quality caviar. Poached egg yolk dish provided a sense of familiarity. Monkfish dish was a no go for me. I didn't even finish the bite. Personally I think the glaze is too strong for the small piece of fish. The pork dish felt like a fancy lunchable, the taro and the tamarind sauce was a great addition though. Scallion rice was fragrant and nicely paired with the broth, I think hydrated mushroom might be better than the dried ones. Maybe it could've added more umami with hydrated ones. Oh, the bread was so good and the butter was great. For the pain perdu dessert, I was so disappointed. They shared that they used durian in the cream and I got excited to know that a chef is finally embracing that flavor in this country. And yes I do taste it but the passionfruit over killed the delicate flavors. It almost felt like they were trying to be brave and wow the guest. But got scared of the potential backlash from using this fruit, so they covered it with passionfruit. Oh, and the sauce underneath the toast is a passionfruit caramel. So the double passionfruit created such a tang that I couldn't appreciate the toast and the durian cream. From the last set of dessert bites, the biko was my favorite. Cocktail: I appreciate the complexity and the depth. It was an experience. Overall, both of us left feeling like we could've spent this money on a different experience/another Michelin restaurant. But we still appreciate the meal and the precision that went into each course. For us, the courses clashed at certain moments. There were high and lows. Or maybe our server just contributed negatively into our experience as well. From reading the other reviews, maybe we should have just went with the bar menu.
Be the first to ReplyLovely restaurant with attentive staff.
I went with my 2 under 25 yr old sons. We experienced food we have never tried before. My youngest son tried everything offered on the 12 course meal. Would definitely recommend if your looking for a once in a lifetime special meal.

My boyfriend took me to Commis for my birthday dinner and I was beyond impressed by with service, food and wine! Every course was better then the last and each wine pairing went great with the food. The restaurants ambiance was nice mood lighting and nice music.
Be the first to ReplyOverall not bad for a 2 Michelin star restaurant.
My favorite things were the caviar dish and the mini apps.
Be the first to ReplyThe food! Amazing food and wine pairing.
Truly a fabulous place for a date night. Quiet atmosphere with limited seating- LOVE. You can actually hear the person you are speaking with. :) Everyone we interacted with was wonderful and knowledgeable. Also, did I mention the food!!
Be the first to ReplyWe've been to other Michelin star restaurants and we're
We've been to other Michelin star restaurants and we're pretty disappointed dining in at Commis. There were 7 of us and I understand that their maximum guests per table is 4 so we made two reservations. I tried calling in advance to give them a headsup but no one was answering the phone so I just left them a voicemail. We were not expecting them to combine the tables but it would be ideal if our tables were right next to each other. When we arrived, the mรขitre d' (Todd) was already rude to us. He told me to call ahead next time and let them know that we're gonna have a large party. I told him I did and so he checked the voicemail. He said he remembered listening to it but couldn't understand what I was saying -- is it because I'm Asian? He made too many snarky and offensive comments that night. We've been waiting by the door, crammed with other guests. So I went to the side with a bigger space. Todd told me I was blocking the way (even when there was still enough space for people to pass through). I said I'm sorry, there's just not enough space by the entrance and then he proceeded to tell me, "That's why we don't allow large parties". I said, "Well, we were able to make two reservations both at 9pm, it wouldn't make any difference if a different group took the same reservation time. We would all arrive at the same time in that tiny entrance". He said guests do not arrive all at once. Then explain why are there other guests waiting by the door aside from our group? Todd seated us and our friends in two separate tables, with a table in between us. And of course he proceeded to tell us not to make the guests in between us uncomfortable by talking over them. We were offended that he assumed we don't have manners. His whole vibe is just very off putting. He kept on saying we're gonna enjoy but he already ruined the whole mood for us. I wanted to love this place but our vibe was ruined from the beginning. The food was alright - we've had better ones at restaurants that are not michelin rated. My friend found a hair in one of the courses. They are not comparable to Le Bernardin nor the French Laundry so do not expect. Our server was great though! I think our expectation was just high cause it's a two star michelin but you can find other great restaurants with the same price point. I don't hate Chef James, he's actually pretty nice. I hope the Mรขitre d' gets a real training or maybe a refresher on how to act like one.
Be the first to ReplyTo say this was a disappointment would be an understatement.
We had been looking forward to this meal since pre-Covid. The place has a cool vibe - modern. The tables felt private. We were excited. We ordered the wine pairing. The first plate was an oyster with a fruity topping. It was fair but the beer paired with it was truly awful. Smelled like something you would use to clean your floor. The next taste was something I can't remember but the fermented sparkling tea served with it was horrible. This was a running theme. The food was not great but the pairing was truly bad. Cheap sparkling wine from England. Local sake that tastes like bathtub gin. A truly terrible red wine from Lebanon that tasted like something had gone terribly wrong in the winemaking process. Good service but as the meal went on I started to resent them as they seemed to be in on the con. Just bad.
Be the first to ReplyThis place become one of my favorite restaurant in the Bay
This place become one of my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. And I celebrated my wife birthday also, every was perfect for me. The restaurant located in Oakland east bay side of from San Francisco. The parking you could find pretty easy on the street. I went on the weekday though, could be busier on the weekend. But the restaurant is easy to spot. When you walked in many staffs come and welcome you even the owner chef himself at the bar. After we checked in and wait for our table. The restaurant has 2 sides ,one is the bar and the other side is the open kitchen and dining table. We sat down and ordered our drinks then the food start to come to the table The course go through of small bites and 10 courses with sweet snacks at the end. Let's go through the menu together one by oneSmall bites : oyster was my favorite one but the other 2 also pretty good, what a good startFirst : sea bream with sunchoke, light and the citrus from the yuzu was really nice. Fish texture was goodSecond : beet confit salad was earthy and a touch of finger lime was my favorite Third : the Dungeness crab was good in season right now. Glad they have this on the menu but the seaweed on the top was a little bit too salty Forth : the caviar dish was one of my favorite , the saltiness of the caviar with sourness from sorrel and dill. Great combination Fifth : the egg dish , for me the hi-light was the bread, best one I ever had in my life. I could eat that every day.Sixth : the fish dish , lingcod was perfectly cooked with a hint of mustard that remind me of wasabi but the broth was a little bitter for meSeventh : bison dish , again this is one of my favorite dish tonight , so tender , so flavorful Eighth : a warm finish with mushroom congee, the pickle that come with it , was the key when I had it together was perfect balance Ninth : this is the best dish , I even asked them for another, the granita apple and pineapple. Tenth : brioche and palm sugar ice cream, good sweet but too much sheep flavor for me. But the ice cream sandwich was awesome Sweet snacks: remind me of Asian flavor, love the capsules the most , very cool very refreshing This place give a great experience and the price of 225$ for 2 Michelin stars restaurant, it's a good deal.Thank you Commis team for your hospitality. We had a great time and would go back in a heartbeat.

My husband and I visited this place to celebrate 7 years of marriage together WITHOUT the kiddos! It was one of the very few times we were able to get out without the boys so we wanted a place where we could take our time and indulge. Commis did not disappoint! Mavra was amazing! She was so knowledgeable about the meal and was able to inform my husband and me about the intricacies of the dishes we were experiencing. After our night out, I was so moved by the cuisines, I created a Reel and reached out to Chef James on IG to thank him and his team for such an amazing experience. They were super approachable and thankful--a small gesture that means so much. We were coming back before based on the meals alone but now, given how friendly and responsive they've been, we'll definitely be making this place a staple in our date night rotation.

Wonderful experience!Celebrating my wife birthday! Me and my wife loved it Worth it to try!
Be the first to ReplyEasily the worst Michelin star restaurant I have been to.
I've been to the Village Pub, Gary Danko, Acquerello, Alexander's, Aterlier Crenn, Spruce, and Manresa. The service was great, we were served 12 drops within 2.5 hour window. Once our plates were done, they picked it up right away and my glass was always full. The food on the other hand was a let down. The first course consisted of crudites and topneck clam...carrots, onion financier, etc. I appreciated the fact that they tried to accommodate the fact my wife doesn't eat raw/medium rare food. They said the topneck clam for her was poached, but all she got was pineapples. Maybe they mixed up the clam with a vegan option? Not too sure. The second course was a whole tomato. I didn't pay $650+ to eat rabbit food for my first two courses. One of the dishes was a tapioca chicken dumpling. The dumpling didn't work for me. The tapioca wrap was just texturally off-putting. The highlight of the meal was the bread and egg yolk. Hence, why it's been a staple on the menu. At least wifey said it was the best bread she's ever had, I'll give them that. The pork collar was chewy and dry. The sauce underneath was spicy and just didn't work well with the pork collar. The desserts were good, probably one of the few dishes I didn't have to force myself to feed. I just felt gypped for spending all that money on all these lackluster dishes...congee, broth, raw veggies, etc. A disappointing meal and a disappointing Father's Day for us.
