We had a company dinner here on a Wednesday.
The food was ordered a week in advance so we were all perplexed at why it took an hour and a half to get it. It actually took an hour to even get water and even though we ordered drinks, we didn't get them until an hour and a half had passed. A few of us went to the manager to ask if he could send an additional server since he only had one person serving our party of 30, and I use the term serving loosely. It wasn't until we threatened to walk out that we finally got water, the drinks we had ordered and the food--almost two hours after sitting down. Do NOT bring a large party here. They cannot handle it.
Be the first to ReplyAlways a solid food choice in Chinatown.
Large portions and great options for veggies. We went early for dinner however once we left there was a huge crowd waiting for a table. So a tip is to definitely arrive early! This is large restaurant with multiple floors and many large tables, I feel like it caters more to large groups. We ordered the water spinach in bean paste, tofu in soy sauce and the mushroom noodles. I loved the water spinach, who doesn't love this classic! The tofu was also very well cooked with a nice roasted texture outside, not fried. However the mushroom noodles dish was literally just a bowl of noodles. It barely had any mushrooms. Overall the prices are good, portions are huge and all shareable.
Be the first to ReplySecond time going to this restaurant and bad service.
The first time we waited for more than 30minutes party of 6. Service was horrible they never asked us if we needed anything asked for a drink and they never came with the drink. They were more in a rush to give us the check and to pay cash for the tip. Second time we went party of 5 and they gave us the menu waited for the waiter to take our order which we waited 15 minutes and no one came to take our order. Loved their food but very disappointed with not serving minorities. Would never go again both times the tables were empty and was only 3 tables being served.

We still dream of the food there! Our family of five from 3 countries were in NYC for a week. One of us who's a local took us there. We ordered a couple of their congees (excellent texture and piping hot!), seafood fried rice, deep fried calamari, stir-fried snow pea leaves, and braised tofu. Everything except for the braised tofu was excellent and the portion was huge. We love it so much that we went back two days after. When the bill came, we were shocked that it was so low. No wonder the place was packed both times we were there.
Be the first to ReplyMy family and I have been coming here for over a decade but
My family and I have been coming here for over a decade but the service gets progressively worse. It's upsetting and unfortunate because we did like the food. Even though it is a hit or miss. They served us with small plates even for the main dishes. They never came to check in on us. We had to call them over multiple times to even get service. They have a preference to who they are nice to and it's not everyone. Even though everyone is a customer. Since the service was terrible and we didn't feel welcomed we tipped less than the suggested amount and it was still a substantial tip. The employee who took our cash asked us for a bigger tip. We were shocked that they even asked for this when the service is terrible. They begged us for a tip even though we said the customer service was awful and they didn't even apologize for that. They publicly asked for a tip in front of other customers embarrassing themselves when the service wasn't worth a higher tip. Would NEVER eat here again.
Be the first to Replyservice was terrible.
my family ordered our usual staple items and they gave everything at once. we were given miniature plates for rice, lobster and our items. not once did a server ask us how we were doing, refill our waters or tea. we had to ask for napkins, utensils and new plates. when we paid, we tipped ten dollars and the employe had the nerve to ask for a higher tip just because people 'usually do' we gave more than 10% and were demanded to give more of a tip for terrible service and okay food. will not come back. such a shame my family has come for many years.
Be the first to ReplyI've been keen to come by this longtime Cantonese LES
I've been keen to come by this longtime Cantonese LES staple since it was recommended to me a few months ago, and I finally had the chance to come for dinner on a recent Saturday. I read that they can be a bit busy on weekends (esp for dinner) so I called ahead and made a reservation for the 5 or us; when we got there, they said they didn't have our reservation (screams) but there would be a table for us in ~10 min. Mildly annoying but it's fine. Ultimately they took us to one of those secluded side rooms in the back. Pros: privacy. Cons: hard to get the servers' attention and some machine? vent? was pretty loud in there. Of course we had to get some of their namesake congees (which are so cheap?); we ordered the pork/preserved egg congee, sampan congee, and mixed veggie congee to share. All the congees were very standard fare - not too thick or watery, flavourful, and portions were filling. We liked the pork and preserved egg congee the most; pork was juicy and the preserved egg came in generous portions. The sampan congee was a bit of a miss; the meat was really hard to chew and came with a lot of tendon, and the fish was pretty bland. Also, a warning for any fellow cilantro-haters: they add cilantro as a garnish on top of the congee (which I've never seen before !!) Other than that, we also ordered - scallion pancakes: pretty generic. I like that they were thin and crispy (a lot of Chinese-American restaurants make them wayyy too thick for my taste) - cantonese sweet pancake: undescriptive name aside, this was actually SO delicious. the lightly sweet filling and the coconut flavour went so well with the crispy pancake wrapper - we wolfed this down in an instant - xiaolongbao ("small juicy bun in shanghai style"): the wrappers were thick and broke easily. the fillings / broth were passable at best, not very flavourful - eggplant and bamboo fungus with bean curd: yummy! the bean curd was nice and chewy and the bamboo and eggplant had pretty good flavours, although they tended to be a bit too overcooked/soft. the sauce was not bad but a bit too heavy - stewed pork with preserved vegetables: the pork slices were surprisingly good - savoury and tender, although it tended to be saltier and oilier than I would have liked. The preserved veggies that the pork sat on were *really* oily (kind of soaking up all the oil from the dish at the bottom of the bowl) and kind of bland otherwise Overall good value for sure (it came out to a little more than $22 per person), although I would say that there's definitely better Chinese/Cantonese food elsewhere. If I do come again, I'd probably just stick to the pork and preserved egg congee
Be the first to ReplyWe dined on a weeknight and the place was packed.
Luckily we were able to get seated right away. We ordered a variety of seafood including Steamed bass, Lobster with Sticky Rice, Chicken and Salted Fish with Eggplant, Fish Maw & Seafood Soup, Sautéed Snail with Black Bean Sauce, Quail, steamed oyster with XO sauce. All the dishes were delicious. I liked that nothing was too greasy or salty. The eggplant dish was probably the best that I've eaten at a Chinese restaurant. I've also never eaten an oyster that large! Service was quick and the servers came by several times to change our plates.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I have been patrons of this place for years,
My husband and I have been patrons of this place for years, so often that we've almost tasted every dish on the menu. Yesterday, March 14th, I brought my visiting parents who speak only Chinese to the restaurant, hoping to delight them with familiar food and atmosphere. We ordered a half garlic chicken, a vegetable dish of mushrooms and pea shoots 菌菇竹笙扒豆苗 and a whole steamed fish in Canton style. The food tastes less than expected: The chicken came quickly but it's only lukewarm and the meat was dry; the vegetable dish was okay. But the steamed fish is missing half of the usual amount of soy sauce that it tastes so blend. But the reason why I decided to leave this review is not just because of the subpar food, it's more because of the stereotyping they cast onto us. When the bill came, I put in my chase credit card as usual in the bill folder. The server goes "do you have cash for the tip?" "I don't" I said, since I didn't carry enough cash to cover the tip, "I'll write on the check". He then said "the credit card machine is having some problems, can you write it now on this bill?" With little doubt on the situation, I reopened the bill folder and wrote the amount of tip and gave it to process. Over the years of coming here, my husband and I had never been asked to put in the tip first before they even swipe the credit card. When I got home, As I processed what has happened and it downed on me that the "problem credit card machine" is just an excuse to make sure my parents and I pay the tip. While it's perhaps understandable, this act is toxic because it's stereotyping Chinese tourists. From a Chinese staff at a Chinese restaurant in New York. The irony and the pity are agonizing. There were 2-3 other tables around at that time (2pm on Thursday March 14th) and nobody were asked to put in their tip first. Congee Village, you will lose even more loyal patrons if you don't right your wrongs.
Be the first to ReplyFood: The food was amazing! This was my first Chinese
Food: The food was amazing! This was my first Chinese restaurant being back in the states from living abroad and it hit all the nostalgia points!! The regular size of congee is a decent share size for a small party but not enough for everyone to get seconds so recommend the larger size! The green beans were perfect! The beef was perfect! The dinner overall was perfect! Service: The service is decent, and the food arrives piping hot! The waiters are attentive when tea runs out and always brings a fresh pot. We were told the wait was going to be 10min but it ended up being less than 5 which was also a plus!
Be the first to ReplyI could eat here everyday every meal.
. so affordable and always love doing family style!! The congee here revives me. Can't wait till my next visit every time. Perfect for large parties Service is fast and location is huge (2 floors with a ton of tables)! Even if there's a lot of parties waiting you'll get seated quickly!

Pretty decent Chinese food and found the congee to be excellent! The other dishes, seafood, stir fry, etc were just okay. I would stick to their hot plates and congee.

This place is pretty popular and it can take a while to get a seat (beware). For a table of 3 we waited about 40 minutes. The food was good. This was my first time having congee and I really liked what we got (pork and preserved egg & chicken and mushroom). The steamed pork with vegetables dish was a pleasant addition to our meal. We also got the green beans which were crunchy and yummy, as well as the steamed egg custard buns whose center is A LOT more runnier than you'd expect. If you're looking to try congee/cantonese food, I think this is a great place to go!
Be the first to ReplyWent here twice once on the first time I traveled to New
Went here twice once on the first time I traveled to New York, and stayed down the road at the Allen hotel. Great food got stir fried vegetables , fried soft tofu, and the tea was hot and delicious in the cold. Second time the food was good but the service was slow. Not necessarily the seating but the servers were tending to 5 big parties all of which were eating tons of dishes , got the plate of veggies first then the waiter disappeared for 20 minutes so we were stuck eating a side dish first or else it would get cold , people who came in after us got served first. Our waiter disappeared and so thankfully a girl came to help us , but stil it took forever even the second round of tea we asked for got cold. The dishes were good but service is kinda iffy. I know the population is mainly Asian who comes here so sometimes I think being Hispanic can be like off putting to the owners and servers and they help others before us . But we only ordered 3 things and it took a while . Also the girl was very nice to offer red bean sago soup it was very sweet and good ! But I was so full and she said "you don't like?" Kinda made me a little downtrodden. I love the food and I love red bean but I was stuffed and I know it was offered as a courtesy and I ate more than half and to be asked and kinda insinuated I didn't like it seemed a bit back handed like I was accepting their food well. Overall this place is good food but the attitude twoards non- Asians can be a little "in your face" I get it so I'm not holding them to the fire but many people who are different cultures love the food and enjoy it and love to interact with the servers just keep it in mind
Be the first to ReplyThis place was an experience.
Very, very busy, and very popular with the local Chinese community, I knew I was in a good place. The menu is expansive and sizes are large for family style meals. It took us about 30 minutes to be seated. The waiting area is very small for the amount of foot traffic. The meal comes with complimentary tea. There was no dim sum available for our meal. We got about 4 dishes: pork fried rice, sizzling short ribs, green beans, and honey walnut shrimp. Dishes came out quickly and in close succession. There is plenty of food for four people and very good. Chinese food is probably my least favorite Asian cuisine, but this was a great experience.

I went to the Allen street location for the first time and ordered the salted chicken congee. On my very first bite, I bit down on a tiny piece of bone. After a few more bites I realized there were just a couple of tiny slivers of chicken inside and the rest was bone, topped with a few little pieces of scallion. I don't think I've ever posted a bad review of a restaurant before, but it was honestly the worst congee I've ever had in my life - kind of revolting to have a bowl of bone and gristle :( I left it, paid, and went and ate somewhere else. The staff seemed very nice, but I'll never go back
Be the first to ReplyWe came for 4 on a Saturday night.
This location is busy because the LES crowd likes to come here. It's a mix of tourists and locals. There's a bar and you can get a drink while waiting. They have $6 beer and $10 cocktails. I asked for a lychee martini with Tito's for $15. Martini was strong on the vodka. They write a number for you and then shout it when it's ready. The space is a bit cramped. We got the sautéed snow pea leaf, roast chicken, sautéed mixed mushrooms with fried bean curd, fish stomach soup, and clay pot pork belly. I thought everything was pretty good. The chicken was a little salty in some parts. The mushrooms didn't taste normal to me for some reason.

Ordered take out and there was a staple in the dish I took home. Stop using staples when packaging take out orders! It could land people in the ER!!!
Be the first to ReplyWow I haven't been so excited and amazed about a restaurant
Wow I haven't been so excited and amazed about a restaurant in A WHILE!! Have always heard glowing reviews about congee village and it seems like a late night food place for a lot of Asians. We tried this for our second dinner and instantly regretted not coming here for our first. We also ordered some soup and dimsum (hargow shrimp dumplings) and shumai. The congee - 5.5/5! The duck in it was so heavenly and we actually asked to add an order of the roasted duck but they ran out, bummer. I personally haven't had clams in this style for so long, and this really satisfies the long time craving. The jumbo fried shrimp with salt and pepper was unexpectedly delightful, the shrimps are also really...jumbo. Then the fried rice! Each grain of rice was separated from each other, and in eggs. So so lovely. Hargow was actually above the average Cantonese cuisine places, the wrapper was super thin and the shrimps they used were of high quality. Service was pretty quick and all the food were brought out decently fast. Can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyFood was great especially for the price point but service
Food was great especially for the price point but service was very meh. It took them about 30 minutes to get our food out, even though we just ordered 2 congees, 1 shu mai, and 1 bamboo fried rice. By the time the food arrived, the fried rice was pretty cold. My boyfriend and I love preserved egg congee, and the one we had here was pretty tasty. It's a pretty big portion size too even though it's only ~$7. The bamboo fried rice was yummy but it was the congee that I'd come back for.

Even though I had moved out of NYC Chinatown 50 years ago, I still like to eat in NYC Chinatown and it's surrounds, especially since I had worked in the Financial District for more than 35 years, I visited and eaten in many of the Chinese restaurants for ages, and Congee Village was one of my favorite ... until this past week. I walked into the waiting area and asked a table for two and was told I have to wait. I asked for how long, and the "manager" said he doesn't know, then said rudely 20 minutes but can't guarantee and he doesn't know so we sat down and wait. A party came in and said they had a reservation and was led to their table. A few couple came in and asked for tables of two and was immediately led to tables and sat them (these folks did not have reservations). I got up and ask about our table and the "manager" rudely responded, "I know you're there so I'll call you when there's a table". My husband and I look at each other and said, "Let's get out of here. Our money is good elsewhere" so we walked out. As much as Congee Village is one of our favs, we will not go back. I cannot believe how rude and impolite the "manager" was.DEFINITELY WON'T RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.

Took over 30 minutes to take our order, gave us the wrong food, took another 30 minutes to get the check. After paying the manager wouldn't let us leave without leaving a tip to his liking.
Be the first to ReplyTotally fine.
Not great. Not terrible. For a $280 bill, they pretended that I could only tip in cash (only to later bring me the check to sign which clearly allowed me to tip in cash). So, ok.

Great place if you want to have an asian family style meal, specifically for a large group of people. Food overall was really delicious and price is reasonable. Highly recommend the short rib with white rice on the side, the razor clam, and the stir fried veggie.
Be the first to ReplyWent on a Saturday at 6 pm with 3 other friends.
We got a number for the waiting list and the hostess said it will be an hour's wait, which we were fine with. However, it ended up being almost 2 HOURS before getting seated... I understand that it is a Saturday and it's prime time service for them, but not only did we wait 2x the estimated time, but the hostess messed up the number on her notepad and gave our table to another group of 4, who came after us! I expressed my annoyance to her but she didn't seem to care. The only way we could have gotten seated at that point was to share a table with another party of 3-4 which we agreed to because we were already starving. The service was not good. If you want a refill on your water, you had to call the waiters every time. The only good thing about the restaurant is that the food came out fairly quickly. We ordered the Honey Walnut Jumbo Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Pork, Off menu item *Fried Fish with Tofu, Mushrooms, and Cabbage*, and the Sauteed Lobster with Sticky Rice. I would say our favorite was the Sauteed Lobster With Sticky Rice, but despite the hunger, the food was nothing special. Most of my friends were tired and exhausted from waiting so long to the point we just wanted to eat and get out of the restaurant. I would not recommend coming here on a weekend during prime time for some overrated food that you can probably get better elsewhere.
