I’m not sure where to begin this review, my experience was almost farcical. I was drawn into this place because of how stylish and fun it looked and I wanted to support Boston’s foray into stylish eaters but this place doesn’t have much to back up its lavish looks.
It’s loud, which isn’t a sin and is tolerable, but when paired with a waitstaff who doesn’t seem to care what you are saying or asking, especially when you have dietary requests in your party doesn’t exactly instill the greatest feeling of confidence. We ordered our drinks and food anyhow, the cocktails were fine, not delicious, not much to even comment on but they were drinkable. Our food arrived and it was ok, up until a point. It was overly fussy in a way that didn’t make live up to the posh trappings of the locale instead coming across as a overly pretentious lipstick on a pig situation where bar food type dishes were spruced up with too much salt, odd spices, and creamy sauces.
The moment that switched over the mood of the evening from open-minded-tolerance to absolutely-not was when I looked down in my spring roll appetizer and found a bug frolicking around in it. I thought my spring roll was different and was enjoying it fine up until that point and then I lost my appetite completely. I gave the plate away and they asked if I wanted another made, what for? My appetite was gone and unfortunately more food was coming.
I grin and bear it wondering how this bug got there as my date laughs over it maybe saying that’s what gave my dish the unique flavor I commented on earlier in the evening as he struggled to cut his “tender” steak (it was so chewy, rubber would be easier to masticate). Eventually we wait, and wait, looking miserable and perhaps forlorn at are disappointing evening. If you’ve read other reviews about this place I don’t think you need to hear it from me how bad the service is here.
Eventually we do get the check and of course we are charged for the insect spring rolls. I went to the front desk and asked for the manager who claimed ignorance of the issue which is all well and good considering he was walking around the restaurant the entire time we were there observing things but seemed to have missed this. He checked on it and said he wasn’t alerted because I gave the plate to a bus boy who did’t speak English. Regardless I relayed that it was tasteless to be charged for it as it ruined my ability to enjoy the rest of my meal. He then comped me the paltry amount of it but didn’t seem to care that the night was ruined which is a stark contrast to other dining situations we’ve experienced lately (shoutout to the place with a name that means “witch” in Italian). He then said that next time he sees me he will give me a glass of “French Champagne” which is silly because after that crummy experience I am not giving them any more of my money, they got well more than they deserve this time. Also, can’t help but feel that this was a dig at my intelligence because all champagne is from France.
Definitely avoid this place, the service was so bad it had me questioning reality.
