Terrible service - it's unfortunately no surprise this
Terrible service - it's unfortunately no surprise this place lost their Michelin star. I was very impressed when I went years ago and very disappointed on my recent visit. The server seemed incredibly stressed and was unable to get anyone's food or drink orders going. We sat patiently at the bar for 30 mins before we were even given waters. By the time he came around, we weren't able to ask questions which was unfortunate since both my friend and I have food allergies and online it said the restaurant was able To accommodate them. He did not have a chance to recommend or describe dishes, we just felt like a total inconvenience and bad for coming. We put an initial order in and the food didn't come for 45 mins before the first course. No one checked on us and asked if we wanted a second drink. When we tried to get attention, it felt like the service was avoiding us and apologizing to others nearby. Multiple dishes were missed. My friend really enjoyed the house red blend wine on the happy hour menu (it's from Italy.) but neither of us was impressed by the food. Would not come back again unless they can really fix whatever issues they are experiencing.

Chef Pepe Moncayo was reluctant to confirm he was the chef until we assured home we *loved* his food at Cranes. His interpretation of Spanish Kaiseki is so delicious that I chewed every bite slowly so I could savor each and every morsel. Lunch was very reasonable, especially the bento box. My cousin's seafood ramen made our eyes roll to the back of our heads. Even the cappuccino was on point. Our server, Nishan, saw us eyeing the cherry blossom dessert (soon to be discontinued next week) and convinced us to try it. It was shiso sponge, rhubarb foam, and lychee granite. No wonder they won Michelin awards in 2021 and 2022. I love the combination of a masterful intersection between two wonderful cuisines, quiet elegance and warm service.

Went to celebrate an anniversary and was surprised by how informal the whole experience was for a high end restaurant. The bar felt like we were in the wrong place, filled with tourists wearing sweats and even a few in hockey jerseys (it was a game day.) Bartender was anti social and seemed unhappy to be there. So we got a table. We were seated a few tables away from the open kitchen which was odd as we were celebrating a special occasion and the only people dressed formally in the entire restaurant (again, lots of jeans, t-shirts and sweats in the dining room.) The did place a happy anniversary card on our table, but no little treats, snacks or desserts were sent to make it feel special fwiw. Our server was lovely and knew the menu well. We ordered a la carte and enjoyed the iberico, tempura shrimp and chicken sando, followed by the pork shank which was quite good. Maybe expectations were too high. Felt more like a good neighborhood restaurant than one vying to get a Michelin star back.

As a fan of fusion food, I absolutely have to recommend this place. I expected the patatas bravas to be similar to dishes I've tried at other tapas restaurants but was pleasantly surprised by the presentation & taste! It's got one side of spicy mayo sauce and one side of creamy mayo sauce, which delivers the perfect taste in one bite. The cheese on top of the shishito peppers was also a wonderful pairing. The waiter was very friendly and the interior was well decorated. Five stars for everything!!

I was really excited to try out this spot, because I've seen consistent reviews online about it being one of the best fine dining establishments in DC. When we got there, the restaurant was basically empty, which really surprised me; I'm used to nicer restaurants being very hard to book and always packed. We got seated near the open air kitchen, and immediately some signs were off. The silverware and water cups were not reflective of a fine dining restaurant, and had clear signs of dilapidation. The service was slow, and the timing between dishes was a bit too long, to the point where we were hungry during the meal. We got the set course. It started out well, and the first few dishes were interesting with unique flavors (there was a good scallop dish!). However, once we hit the mains, it honestly was quite mediocre. Plain flavors with no depth or uniqueness. The dessert was even more disappointing; it was basically a huge blob of dense chocolate mousse, with no complexity to it. Definitely don't go for the set menu; not sure how the a la carte compares!
Be the first to ReplyCranes was very good and very expensive.
The service was excellent. Lunch menu had a lot of words that I didn't know. I'm a foodie and have a pretty good vocabulary, but I still had to ask, The waiter was very nice in explaining them. I might go for dinner to see how different that menu is. He said lunch was more Japanese and dinner was more Spanish.

I went with a friend last month for happy hour (at Bar Tsuru) and it was amazing! The food was amazing, and definitely felt like they put some care in the Spanish / Japanese fusion & the combination worked really well. Also, our bartender Matt was fantastic and made us felt more than welcome, and also gave us some good suggestions on drinks / tapas!

Be the first to ReplyLove all the food and wines we have here.
The food at Cranes not only focuses on flavor but also texture! Not a surprise they had a Michellin star a few years ago. My favorite was the udon! The croquettes and their spin on okonomiyaki were a breath of fresh air. My husband really loved the fish tacos (which I can't remember the name of it in the menu). The wine selection was also fantastic! I also had the wagyu old fashion--very innovative, but not my kind of old fashioned. They have great happy hour from 4-7pm at the bar--which is nice and more elevated than other restaurants that serve happy hour. Great music. Our server Daniel was attentive. I'd definitely come back for the udon and would love to try other dishes.

I've been here twice for the happy hour, and it's been great both times! The staff behind the bar are friendly and have given me great recommendations from the menu. For savory dishes, I've now tried the pork fried rice (4/5, super interesting combination of textures and flavors, even if not all were my favorite), udon (4/5, great noodles and toppings but sauce a bit more watery than I wanted, so it didn't stick to the noodles), chicken karaage (3/5, standard fried chicken with great aioli but not quite as crispy as you might expect), okonomiyaki tots (3/5, just your standard potato with some sauce really), and paella croquetas (5/5, absolutely delicious balls of chorizo and delight). The desserts are where they really shine, though. The chocolate de cabra has a wonderful caramel with chocolate mousse and goat ice cream, and the crispy rice is a great contrast to the softness of everything else. The yuzu cheesecake and sorbet were 5/5, and there were even little tapioca balls in the punchy citrus sauce at the bottom of the plate, which I could have happily drunk on its own. The churros were good (I prefer them without so much sugar on the outside, but they were fried very well!), but the real star was the miso caramel dipping sauce (5/5)! I want that sauce all day, every day. The chocolate one was more watery, but that caramel is the real deal. I included some pictures to show how gorgeous the plating is - every dish was presented beautifully! I loved the food here and will definitely be back again - hopefully for the paella next time to say I've tried the main menu! Definitely recommended for unique Spanish/Japanese fusion, very reasonable happy hour prices ($8-10 for dishes), and stellar desserts. The decor inside is beautiful, too! I loved the subtle crane decorations throughout.

What an interesting idea for a restaurant: Japanese and Spanish fusion. At Cranes, Spanish tapas (small plates) and Japanese kaiseki (a multi-course meal), go hand in hand. Gluten free foodies can find quite a few options to enjoy from their designated gluten free menu. It's only slightly different from the regular menu. We ordered the shishito peppers, the patatas bravas, the bok choy, salmon crudo, and the wagyu short rib aburi. Everything was delicious. The standouts were definitely the salmon crudo and the patatas bravas. The crudo features a rotating selection of fresh fish and on this night, it happened to be salmon - one of my faves. The patatas bravas were some of the fanciest and most inventive I've seen. The sauce was super flavorful! The prices are typical for DC and the wine list was solid enough. I wish I could've stayed for entrees but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time before my train back to Baltimore. I'd definitely return to check out more of Cranes' menu though!

Visit: 5/2021 Review finished: 3/2024 Unfortunately I am attempting to finish this review in 2024, long after visiting this establishment so I do not recall my visit here in detail besides giving it 5/5 stars and the fact that I could never have afforded to come here on my own. There weren't many patrons dining in at the time. I remember the chef coming to our table at one time to chat with us. The experience was unique to me at the time, with small dishes brought to us from a pre made menu (I think maybe it was like a chef's choice menu?). I know I enjoyed everything I had. Looking back, this might remind me a bit like the movie "the menu" lol Anyway, in my very trusted book of ratings, I absolutely enjoyed this spot and the food was amazing. So I'll be back and do a better job reviewing next time.

// Summary A bold and innovative experience that blends Spanish and Japanese flavors that keeps you guessing in anticipation as to what's coming next. // Experience I came here for the dinner omakase along with its beverage pairing. The creativity of these dishes with the combination of flavors and the presentation did not cease to amaze me. The pairings worked quite well to complement each course. // Service Service was excellent. Each dish and its associated pairing were described in a way that captivated my attention, expressed with my passion from the staff. Chef Pepe actually came out to greet me, thinking that I was part of the restaurant industry (very flattering, hah). We chatted for a little bit and shared a couple of jokes. // Ambiance The restaurant itself is quite large and has dark modern earthy tones to it. It's very tasteful and you feel comfortable without it necessarily feeling unapproachably upscale. // Convenience I'm not entirely familiar with the DC landscape, so not sure how "convenient" this location is - especially since I often choose to stay at a place that is central to most of the restaurants I want to go to.
Be the first to ReplyLovely space and great service.
Every single course was spectacular. The omakase came with three desserts!

Definitely worth a visit ! The food flavors stand out, preparation is thoughtful, and service was good.We order hamachi crudo : bursting with flavor, crispy lotus root was a nice texture, but wish I had more fish!Shrimp Tempura : delicious. HOT! Straight from the fryer, to the chef in the pass for garnish, then straight to you. Delicious sauce with it, and the spice powder on top has the perfect bite.Patatas bravas: hahahahahahaha , this is soooo good you have to try it. The potato is crispy, the sauces are vibrant , it's the perfectBite.Mushroom rice: this is a must, crispy enoki's across the top, fried cheese pieces, cheesy mushroom goodness. Wagyu Beef entree: delicious. Cooked perfect, salad and sauce perfectly compliment the dish. We had the churros for desert which were great as well.

We ordered the 10 course original and vegetarian omakase, The vegetarian version was $98, about $30 less than the original, which was a nice surprise and appropriate. The food was delicious and our favorites were the rice dish and the sorbet pre dessert. Service was excellent and ambience nice.
Be the first to ReplyAnother Michelin restaurant that did several things well
Another Michelin restaurant that did several things well but nothing done greatWe made a concerted effort to try and experience the Spanish and Japanese fusion of this restaurant so we ordered a half dozen tapas and the omakase for 2. Of the 10 dishes in the omakase, 3-4 were spectacular...amazing...perfection. There were 3-4 that were adequate...not bad, but wouldn't order again. And then a couple that we felt missed the mark with the flavor profile. The following tapas, Jamon Iberica, oysters, shishito peppers, patatas bravas, and the shrimp (gambas al ajillo) were all enjoyable while the Bao Bun was nothing offensive but they were a little heavy on the sauce which camouflaged the flavor of the meat. All in all, the tapas, well they were consistently, "good" and what I felt the kitchen excelled in. However, their desserts made up for the omakase let down. They were dream worthy. The churros were heavenly and one of the last 3 items in the omakase was a chocolate concoction that was truly decadent. It was the perfect marriage of a tres leches with the flavor profile dominated by chocolate. Now THAT was amazing. Our waiter was very very kind and the service was exceptional. I would go back but I would probably skip the 10-course omakase now that we know what was good and what was average and focus on the exceptional items on the menu. I can see why they received the Michelin star with the amazing service and the bold blend of the chef's Spanish upbringing and decade of training in Singapore. It was certainly a good experience, that left us very satisfied, I'm just not sure it was worth the $1,000

Was gifted this experience by my family and went with my partner for a lovely tasting menu.Overall the service was nice but our server did seem distracted and rushed, understandably so as it was peak dinner hour on a Saturday. Started off with the most delicious (albeit expensive) cocktails - spanish g&t and the old pond (shochu based). Ended up getting 2 of the old ponds, my partner who doesn't typically enjoy alcohol still very much liked this! We both opted for the tasting menu, which continued to impress us as we moved through the courses. Started small but with a punch of flavor in their scallop dish, progressing through other small bites until getting to the main meats and rice dish which was our personal favorite. Loved the pre dessert of the apple sorbet with crumble more than the actual dessert which was chocolate based but nothing too special. We had a lovely time at Cranes and we definitely recommend the tasting menu for a fun, innovative and delicious experience in DC!
Be the first to ReplyWe chose to spend our anniversary at Cranes.
Immediately upon arrival to the space the setting fit the bill of what you'd expect from a Michelin Starred restaurant. It was a huge space that had many tables but the layout made way for the space to breathe and made sure nothing ever felt crowded. The decor was beautiful. We were sat near the open faced kitchen and watching the chefs move throughout the kitchen felt like a part of the whole experience. We decided to do the Omakase and it had to be one of the best food decisions we've made in a while. The inventive approach to combining heat, flavor, and aesthetics left both my wife and I wowed. There wasn't a thing that we didn't enjoy. I also noticed that there was someone next to me enjoying the omakase and they seemed to have some different dishes from us which only made it more impressive. The service was exceptional. The team style approach to service was incredible. Silverware moved in and out seamlessly. Plating was changed out quickly and tables were wiped down after each course. The cocktails were exceptional and complimentary to the dining experience. We definitely plan to return and work through the tapas and a la carte menu and would highly recommend each of you to do the same.
Be the first to ReplyWe had the omakase experience.
The food was phenomenal. The wait staff was attentive and the restaurant had a modern cafeteria like vibe. We left full and happy
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience, well deserving of a Michelin star.
Service was attentive and food was delicious.... Yet, by far, the drinks were the most memorable. Thank you everyone for a great night!
Be the first to ReplyFood: We had the OMAKASE with curated wine pairing.
I chose the pescatarian option while my husband had the regular menu. Food was delectable with distinct flavors and presentation. I couldn't repeat what the waiter described at every course. We listened and nodded but probably didn't completely understand everything he said. There were a lot of information! Haha! Service: Considering that this is a Mitchelin Star restaurant, the service was incredible like a coordinated dance between the servers, bussers, and sommeliers. Ambiance: we arrived at 545pm and it was quite intimate but by 830pm the restaurant was hustling and bustling. Beautiful and classy decor fitting for a Mitchelin Star establishment.

We had a very impromptu Sunday date lunch here with reservations made as we were leaving the house. I recommend parking at the lot on 9th and Massachusetts Avenue if you are having troubles finding street parking. The lot is about 2-3 blocks from the restaurant and you get to pass beautiful Center City on your walk there. Service was great as expected. The servers were attentive, warm, and did a thorough job describing the menu items. Since our lunch was not expected, we had a time constraint of 90 mins. Even though our server said the omakase can be done in that time frame and she can ask the kitchen to speed up the execution, we didn't want to risk it. We want to be able to sit and comfortably enjoy each dish. I ordered the smaller version of the omakase with their lunch bento box. I have to say the food was absolutely beautiful and pleasing to the eye with great detail in colors and garnishing. My favorite items from the bento box were the delicate and fresh scallops and the flavorful brussels sprouts. I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura with the creamy sauce. The other options were ok which included the chicken egg roll, wagyu Yakitori, and carrot salad. My husband ordered the bok choy and Wagyu appetizers which were both delicious. The sauces stand out for both dishes. He also ordered the unagi paella which was a nice spin and fusion of Japanese and Spanish cuisine. The rice was fatty and perfect with the fatty unagi. The server recommended to use the back of our spoons to scrap all the crispy rice from the bottom of the dish. Sadly, there wasn't that much crispy rice on the bottom and I was a bit disappointed. Otherwise, this dish is delicious. I think because Spanish food is heavily influenced in the menu here, the dishes were hardy, meaty, and full of robust flavors. I personally felt like many of the dishes were a bit heavy and it didn't take much to fill our bellies up. If anything, the presentation of the foods and the amazing service definitely makes this place worthy of visit and Michelin star!
Be the first to ReplyStopped by here since the thought of Spanish and Japanese
Stopped by here since the thought of Spanish and Japanese fusion seems really interesting epically with he Michelin star rating. The atmosphere of the was cozy and welcoming! The menu was extensive, featuring a wide variety of small plates that were perfect for sharing. Each dish was beautifully presented, and the flavors were truly exceptional. In addition to the small plates, the restaurant also offers omakase but I was not able to try it.Overall, my dining experience at this Cranes was pretty good! The quality of the food, the cozy ambiance, and the attentive service all combined to create an unforgettable dining experience. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining experience.
