I wish TripAdvisor had a sixth star.
Ethiopian cuisine, of itself, deserves five stars, it's absolutely delicious. Everything was impeccable. The cocktails arrived in cocktail glasses and the exquisite coffee in an ornate pot ( did you know coffee is originally from Ethiopia?). We asked if they had a gluten-free alternative for the injera and they did, they call it โgluten-free Injeraโ ๐. The chocolate desserts were absolutely delicious and elegantly presented, served to titillate the palette not to destroy your figure. We will definitely be going back next time we're in Chicagoโฆour kind of town.

We went here before a Cubbies game, and it was amazing. We have a positive bias towards Ethiopian food to begin with, and they just reinforced it. We sometimes have difficulty finding tej (honey wine) and they had it in abundance! The staff was great by the way. Highly recommended.

So, so good. I wish i had gone in a large group to try more of this delicious food. The service was fantastic. The woman helping us was very adept at helping a party of two try as much as possible without stuffing ourselves. The sambusa sampler is a great way to start and see where your taste buds are leaning. The potatoes were perfect, beets interesting and tasty and the lamb was so delicious. Can't say enough about this place, you must go
Be the first to ReplyGreat Ethiopian Food
Excellent food and swift service. With lots of glass windows and a ton ceiling it is not great for conversation, we would still definitely come back. The shai tea was deliciousโฆperfectly balanced with cinnamon, cardamon, and clove.
Be the first to ReplySo delicious and so much fun!
So much fun to eat with others! Come with people you want to share with, and eat off of one plate together. Best to get the sampler plates so you can try a bunch of things, and portions always feed more than expected.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre at best
Went there a day before my birthday. Having lived in a few countries around the world, including Africa, I have to say that I was really looking forward to some authentic cuisine. This place was a major disappointment. Crowded tables really close together. If I want to share my discussions with anyone I would ask them to join in. I don't want to hear others personal problems during my dinner. No table cloth in sight. Most of the restaurant pictures show them? Food-mediocre at best, everything was barely room temperature, nothing stood out in flavor or presentation. Portions were tiny, one of the meat dishes had a cube of meat of about an inch long and wide, and falling apart. The pan baked bread which we ordered in addition to the meal was stale. You could actually see the sides were it was cut caving in. And it was cold and hard. The final straw was my desert, chocolate coconut pie. It came in frozen solid on the inside and the sides of it oozing around the plate, awful. Will not be back, ever. For a total of around $130 for two people I think I can find better places to eat.

Flavors are strong here. The messob (the big platter of stuff) is a huge amount of food for 2 people if you also eat the injera (the edible base it's served in). I suggest you try Ethiopian cuisine once in your life and eat with your fingers! They will smell like Ethiopian food for a day or so though. Sambussa sampler was great too, especially that red sauce that comes with it.

Fun menu, having been in Ethiopia enjoyed the choices and it was tasty. However prices, especially on local canned beer, were inflated. $7.50 for a beer Iโd already had on draft at other venue for $5 pint. Otherwise, their staff was not timely or very attentive especially considering the time of day and few other diners. Overall the experience was disappointing although their chef did his job fine.

I thought i was done with Demera forever but when we tried to go to Tesfa over the weekend and was quoted a 45 minute wait, we had Ethiopian food on the brain and headed over to Demera. It was just as I remembered - perfectly fine Ethiopian food where you pay more and get less food than any number of better Ethiopian restaurants (Tesfa, Ethiopian Diamond, Ras Dashen (soon to reopen under a different name but owned by the same family)).
Be the first to ReplyExcellent African vegan restaurant
We always have difficulties finding places to eat with our daughters since they are vegan. They took us to Demera restaurant since they felt that we would be able to find what they like as well as dishes that we have not tried before. I must say that I was very impressed and was not disappointed. The staff is very helpful explaining the dishes, were prompt to serve the guest, and were very kind bringing the food. Overall our meal was perfectly prepared and it was definitely a unique and outstanding experience which I highly recommend. Keep in mind that this style of meal is eaten using your bare hands which is how itโs done in Ethiopia.
Be the first to ReplyFamily style dining!
We ordered for family style meal with 8 types of dishes served on injeras. All the dishes were delicious. Do choose the recommended dishes by them. Also recommend sambusa sampler. Donโt miss out the appetisers and Ethiopian coffee.
Be the first to ReplyVery tasty
The food and service were both very good. We got a combination meal and got a number of dishes. The spicey lentil soy and the spicey lamb wot were both excellent.

Prior to visiting, we checked all reviews for the large selection of Ethiopian restaurants in Chicago. We know about Ethiopian food so we read the reviews with wise eyes. Finally picked Demera. JACKPOT! A PERFECT score on all levels. Restaurant is serene, wait staff polite, friendly, helpful. Food was authentic. Translation: OUT of this WORLD awesome. Full of fabulous flavor, texture . Find a way to eat at this wonderful Ethiopian restaurant. Stop with the dumb American burger and explore a new culture. It will knock your socks off.

We love Ethiopian food and this ranks up there as some of the best weโve had. We had the Vegetarian Messob for two and loved everything on it. We were pleasantly surprised that the food came out quickly also which isnโt always the case.
Be the first to ReplyGood Ethiopian Restaurant
Good Ethiopian restaurant, the food and the service are excellent. Recommend for family dinners or business lunches.
Be the first to ReplyI've been to quite a few Ethiopian restaurants, and this is one is excellent!
Fairly well located, off of Lawrence, this is an unpretentious gem.
We had the vegetable bayanetu (nine vegetarian dishes) for two. Delicious and I think a great way to introduce yourself to the cuisine. You can, of course, also have a meat sample, with salads.
We had the ambasha (sort of baked bread with farmer's cheese) as an appetizer and a bottle of honey wine (the tej).
Service was very good; prices reasonable.
I've been to Ethiopian places in a dozen countries (although I'm waiting for my first trip to Ethiopia) and this ranks as one of the two or three best I've been to.
I'm a regular at Demera in Saint Paul - no connection of course to this one - so when I heard of this one in Chicago, we had to go.
It's very nice!
