DZ Akins La Mesa Reviews from The Last Year
Food was okish until we saw the mouse wandering around.
Service wasn't great from the staff or the mouse.
Classic delicatessen located in San Diego.
Inside is like being transported back time. Mirrored walls, old murals, signed photos of celebrities that have visited. The place is pretty massive for a deli. Service was quick and accurate. Good soup and sandwiches. They also have a bakery and the desserts were delicious!

The food, ambiance as well as the deli counter worker (red hair only in her bun) 10/10! I was so pleased I went back two days in a row!
Been a long time since my last visit and I was surprised
Been a long time since my last visit and I was surprised how much the price has increased $22.95 for a #62 Pastrami Sandwich if I came a day later (Thursday) it would of been $18.95. But I was longing for a good pastrami sandwich just blown away by the cost. Fries and pickles did not disappoint. Our server was nice and attentive. Also picked up a cranberry and blueberry muffin from their bakery and the blueberry was delicious and moist. I gave the other away but it was probably just as good. I struggled with my rating (3 or 4 stars?) because the pastrami was good but I felt it was overpriced.
I just love DZ Akins! Of course the food is great.
..consistent and generous. I can get 2-3 meals out of one serving! The waitstaff is knowledgeable and fun. The ambiance is old school and deli-centric. I highly recommend it!

On Thursday 30MAY2024, at or around 1730, my girlfriend, her mom, and I came here for dinner. &Oh my did this place NOT disappoint! The FOOD: I was torn between the Philadelphia Style Steak Sandwich and the Brisket Dip Sandwich. I asked our server for her recommendation between the two and she pitch the ultimate hack of getting the Philadelphia Style Steak Sandwich but having Brisket instead of steak to get "the best of both world!" as she proclaimed. I got that with a side of onion rings because I have steak fries and wedges, otherwise I would've just gotten the French fries. My girlfriend and her mom shared the Roast Beef and Mashed Potatoes. Both meals were great! The Adam's Apple and Tiramisu desserts The SERVICE: Miss Jen K, you are a saint and I appreciate the wonderful service you provided us! Miss Jen K was an amazing server and made my first time experience a great one! She often checked on us, gave us what we needed when we asked, and provided the great input for my meal. The AMBIANCE: with it being my first time, as soon as we walked in I thought wow, it's a better version of Cracker Barrel with more food variety! Because it's a restaurant, bakery, and store all in one! Parking was available in front of the restaurant and in regard to the men's restroom it's only one urinal and one stall. Downfalls/Cons: -the walkways are pretty narrow. -the booth we were in was a bit small. -the table at our booth was a little wobbly. Overall Rating: 9 of 10.
The food was so amazing over the weekend.
My family and I enjoyed matzo balls and sandwiches. We bought cookies on their bakery and deli. The salmon was work it. It is $31/lb but so yummy and fresh. The service was on point and quick. There were a lot of people there and our food came out pretty quickly. The ambiance is clean and inviting.

D.Z. Akin's restaurant is a nostalgic deli that we've cherished for many years. The complimentary pickles are outstanding, and the food is wholesome. You definitely won't leave hungry. Almost every time we visit, I order the Mish Mash soup and half a sandwich. The Mish Mash soup features chicken broth with a huge matzo ball, kreplach, noodles, carrots, and chicken. For the sandwich, you can choose from 15 different types: - Turkey - Corned Beef - Whitefish Salad - Burger Patty - Scoop of Cottage Cheese - Pastrami - Roast Beef - Tuna Salad - Salami - Pepperbeef - Egg Salad - Fresh Fruit, Lettuce, and Tomato with choice of Bread, Bagel, or Roll - Brisket - Chopped Liver - Cold Cheese - Cold Roast Beef or Fresh Turkey Breast Platter - Bologna - Liverwurst - Scoop of Cottage Cheese - Ham - Chicken Salad - Mini Tongue I highly recommend visiting this delightful deli with a bakery for a taste of the past. The service is exactly what you'd expect from a sit-down deli, and the ambiance is classic old-school deli.
We love DZ Akins and so much good food in here.
The food is super delicious. The service is quick and friendly. The ambiance is clean, relatively quiet, and a bit crowded. Overall, I would highly recommend coming to this place.
Food is always fresh and tasty.
I ordered a turkey, avocado, cheese sandwich to go this afternoon and got a turkey sandwich - no cheese, no avocado- for $22. This is a little pricey. it was made while I was waiting and i think the sandwich would have been much better if it came as ordered.
The Food and Service were Excellent.
We will definitely be back. We tried the Pastrami and Corned Beef Rueben with the Onion Rings for the side dish. Next time I'm going to try the Turkey Rueben.
I"ve been twice recently.
The first time I wasn't impressed with the service nor the food. My sandwich was dry and smaller than I expected. Weren't they known for big servings? I wasn't ever going to come back, but my mom enjoyed it that first time and wanted to go again. The second time was much better - service and food. I stayed away from sandwiches and chose an omelet. With so many restaurants to choose from, this place won't be in the top 20. Honestly I think the only reason I'd come back is if my mom wants to.
The prices here, like many restaurants, have gone up far
The prices here, like many restaurants, have gone up far beyond inflation. My friend and I have been having weekly breakfast for years. The food and service are both great, but two omelets, two coffees and a side of bacon, with tip, came to $72+ last Friday. Since the clientele here tends to older people, this restaurant may not be around much longer. Greed has raised its too ugly face once again.
Customer service is good, the food is very good.
I also enjoy the bakery and gift shop as well.

Came here to try the matzah ball soup and was happy with everything we ordered. The decor is more of an old school type of diner style. I really love the art on the walls and signed photos. We were helped by David who made sure our water was never empty and gave great suggestions when we asked since it was our first time in. The food was good and they give generous portions. I would love to come back to have breakfast here. They also have a deli and bakery, and a gift shop when you walk in. I would definitely recommend trying this place.
Bakery items lacking former quality
What a shame, in the last year something has happened to the quality of the bakery items at D.Z. Akin. We have come to the bakery for almost 40 years and it was always sooo good. Looks like we are going to have to find another place to buy our bakery items. So sad!
I got the Reuben Sandwich and it was AMAZING.
The sandwich was filled with meet the rye bread was toasted perfectly and so soft. It was served with a warm brown broth sauce that I do not know the name of but was really good.
Amazing bakery.
We love coming into eat but also ordering desserts for special occasions. Everybody loves the chocolate cake we ordered for my son's bday party with baseball theme. I brought in the little baseball figures and they did the rest. My son was very happy. And prices for cakes are very reasonable. Always good service.
I've been coming here occasionally for many years.
In the 90s this was the place my dad would take me for Matzoh ball soup when I was recovering from a cold. Today, before lunch rush, it wasn't very busy in the bakery. I took a number, but the woman at the counter called me over because there was no wait. The entire time I'm picking things out (bagels, bread, cookies, deli stuff) she's curt, impatient, bordering on rude. Not friendly in the least. It was so odd. I don't know why the staff have disdain for customers with good money. It wasn't busy, Im friendly, I'm spending money, and it's not like the food tastes like Katz Deli or Russ & Daughters or something. I left there pretty irritated. While I'm thankful DZ has been in business for so long, they are missing the mark in some key areas, aside from customer service. The matzah balls are heavy/dense, and the chicken soup is so salty. Black and white cookies are just OK, not great. Cookies in general are hit or miss. Hamentashen is OK. Cannoli from today was tasteless. The rugelach is good. Bagels and breads are good, especially for San Diego. I want to give 3 stars but the many years of coming here makes me stick with 4. I'll come back and hope it's better next time.
Best Deli in San Diego!
This restaurant is the finest deli in all of San Diego. The menu is vast and so many choices that anyone can find something they like. The pickles are extraordinary but you need ask (they are gratis). I had the chicken noodle soup which was much of nothing for $9 and difficult to eat. The pastrami on rye was perfect as was the accompanying potato salad. Also, the cream horn from the bakery reminiscent of Paris. The prices have really risen at this restaurant over the last few years; however, the menu is worth it. You can make reservations which you could not before. One drawback is the lack of close parking so you may need walk a bit. The place can be a bit hectic, but the service is always top notch and attentive. I highly recommend and would return.
Chickenless Chicken Soup
The sandwiches at this DK Akins are very good. I've had chicken salad and turkey and both were delicious. Today I felt like having chicken soup. I ordered the large one so I could share it at home. $15.95. I got home and to my surprise there were lots of noodles, a few large pieces of carrots, but NO CHICKEN!. I called and was told that there is no chicken in the chicken soup, just the chicken broth. WHAT! I needed clarification; The Matzo Ball soup has Matzo?, The vegetable soup has vegetables? but no chicken in the "chicken soup". And they share that the same chicken broth is used for all three soups. I spoke with Lily who tells me that their regular customers are aware to ask for chicken at an additional price $4.00. I let her know this isn't acceptable. They shouldn't call it chicken soup if there's no chicken and she offered to give me a side of chicken. This is definitely false advertising. I won't be ordering their chicken soup moving forward.
A great place falls RIDE, RUDE, RUDE
I got a craving, so I stopped at DZ Akin's. Went in and said I wanted to order to go. Had to admit a menu. I then asked if I could sit at the table right by the hostess stand, I was told yes. My service dog tried to go under the table, but there wasn't room without moving all the chairs. He was about half way out and some employee said he can't be there to put him under the table or outside. She said this while walking past I replied that he's a service dog she yelled from a ways away "Still take him out". I tried again to make room under the table, a waitress asked if I want something to drink. I asked if she could do a to-go order. She walked away without a word. Someone else from the hostess area called over that I had to "go over there." I made a comment that employees here used to be friendly and polite. Got a scoff. I put the menu down and my unwelcome service dog and I left. This is really a shame. I've been in San Diego for 28 years and loved DZ Akin's the whole time. Actual customer service is becoming more and more uncommon. I thought a place with such great history and die hard fans would want to maintain their following. After 28 years I will think twice before going back. There is just no reason to be rude to someone you have never met, especially in the Service Industry.
DZ's is the best
DZ's ruins you for any Reuben in any other part of the world. Theirs is simply the best. What can I say. Oi vey!!!

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
