The Farmhouse Inn is a charming, bucolic property with excellent service, rustic-elegant rooms and strong concierge support as you explore Sonoma County. We stayed in a Barn Junior Suite on the second floor of a building towards the back of the property. The room was a great size with comfortable furniture, a large closet and two-sided fireplace to enjoy in the room or in a pair of Adirondack chairs on your private deck. There was a fine attention to detail in everything in the room — from the rustic-modern decor and hefty mugs available for in-room coffee to the welcome amenities, custom sign and personalized note acknowledging the birthday we were celebrating that weekend. Our room had a delicious bottle of Sonoma Pinot to welcome us, as well as some delicious, house-made cheesecake brownies. There was also a curated selection of wine for purchase in the room, as well as a complimentary non-alcoholic minibar with local snacks. The bathroom was a particular highlight with a large, jetted tub that overlooks your patio and the adjacent forest, a large steam shower and heated floors. Beyond our room, the property has an efficient layout and is beautifully landscaped. There is a central pool and hot tub with an adjoining casual restaurant (Farmstand) where we enjoyed lunch one day. There are a couple of fire pits near the entrance to the pool where they offer nightly s’mores with homemade marshmallows and host a daily wine hour with one of their partner wineries. Towards the front of the property is a reception building which houses a small boutique, a station for coffee and snacks, and a “bath bar area” where you can grab a complimentary selection of seasonal soaps, bath salts and brown sugar body scrub. Near the reception building is the original farmhouse which houses the eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant that is currently undergoing renovation. Towards the back of the property, there are plenty of lovely lounging spaces, a chicken coop, swinging day beds, croquet and an oversized Jenga set. There is also a “Wellness Barn” where you can receive spa treatments. My wife used the spa while we were there and said the massage she received was excellent and the entire experience was well managed. They have a nice boutique in the spa as well as a stone fireplace and outdoor swinging day bed to relax in before your treatment. There was also a selection of teas and waters to enjoy before or after your treatment. The facilities at the “Wellness Barn” are somewhat limited, but all of the bedrooms, I believe, have soaking tubs and most have saunas or steam showers. My wife's only feedback was that with limited facilities, guest should just be brought immediately to the treatment rooms to change versus having access to a limited locker room. The food we enjoyed on property did a great job of showcasing local ingredients. We were not able to eat at The Farmhouse Inn Restaurant while we were there because it is under renovation, but we have dined there before and the experience and food are excellent. We did enjoy the in-room breakfast and had lunch at Farmstand before we left. The breakfast was ordered the evening before by selecting from a few preset options and was delivered on time the following morning with a diverse bounty of things to try. We had a selection of local meats and cheeses, seeded toast, three kinds of pastries, yogurt, granola, fresh-squeezed juice and coffee. Farmstand was also a great experience given the wonderful weather, terrific service from Oscar and delicious food, with my standout dishes being the half chicken and Meyer lemon tart. The service we experienced was consistently excellent from Sierra and Teresa at the Front Desk and Concierge team to Oscar at Farmstand, Andy from MacRostie Winery, and the folks who helped us with luggage and housekeeping (who even stocked the room with extra robes and waters for the three of us). I want to especially acknowledge Russell who we met at the nightly wine hour by the pool while sampling MacRostie Winery’s excellent Pinot, Chardonnay and Rosé before we headed to dinner in Healdsburg. Not only did Russell offer to drive us to and from our dinner reservation, but his husband Andy who was the host from the visiting winery and his neighbor, Jerry, who is the sommelier at Barndiva restaurant in Healdsburg both delivered great surprises for our friend who was celebrating his birthday with us that weekend. My only constructive feedback about the experience is that we were asked if we would like the pool heated before our arrival (which we said said "yes" to) and the pool was freezing and not particularly clean while we were there. I think this may have been a function of the hot tub being under renovation. We did not spend as much time at the pool as we expected though because the staff set up a number of great tasting and dining experiences for us. One of the most distinguishing aspects of a stay at The Farmhouse Inn is the excellent concierge service. There are around two dozen partner wineries that have been selected by the owners that offer elevated and typically free tastings to Farmhouse Inn guests. We took part in two while we were in town — Croix Estate and Flambeaux Vineyards — and both were amazing. Our exceptional host Thomas at Croix poured around 11 wines and made us feel like we were VIPs the entire visit. Elizabeth at Flambeaux hosted us on the most beautiful tasting patio I have seen in Sonoma, while offering great winery and food recommendations for the rest of our trip. The consistency across the experiences — with the folks at Farmhouse and the recommended wineries and restaurants all knowing our reason for visiting Sonoma (to celebrate a birthday) went a long way in making the experience feel special. The Farmhouse Inn is an incredibly easy experience to recommend. It has a strong sense of place, excellent service and deep integration into the fabric of Sonoma with wonderful support and access to phenomenal wineries, restaurants and activities in the area. It is now our preferred place to stay in the whole county and I think it best represents the warm, comfortable and familial hospitality that epitomizes the best of the region.
