Satisfying comfort food for 30 relatives
My sister and I hosted another group dinner at one of our favorite Chinese restos in San Francisco. We pre-ordered for 30 diners although the children's table had a different type of dishes, ie, not spicy, minimal vegetables.
The dishes were so delicious, generously portioned, and arrived in a orderly fashion. The price was surprisingly low for the quantity and quality.
There were many favorable comments.
There were no repeat of the chaotic affair of our last banquet there.
Five Happiness followed our instructions. Everyone had a good time.
Everything was delicious
Visited on a weeknight for a large family dinner. Arrived close to 6pm and street parking was easy to find. Our host had pre-ordered a set menu of multiple courses. Everything was very fresh and very tasty. I'm excited to return and order off the regular menu to try some additional dishes including their Beef Noodle Soup. Must try the dessert - Sweet Sticky Rice with red bean and fruit, one of the best things ever!

Visited on a Saturday night and parking was tough to say the least. There were maybe three other tables that were occupied and we were greeted very cordially and seated right away. The menu is very extensive but we ordered only from the Taiwanese cuisine section. We had the steamed fish fillet with tofu, stir fried mustard green and Shanghai style pork. Everything was very flavorful and very fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and would definitely return whenever we are in the Bay area again.
Be the first to ReplyScary on the outside, pretty nice on the inside
The outside looks run down and shabby, but the inside is pretty nice. I heard that they had a fire awhile ago and redid the inside. The food is pretty good and the service was great. The Peking duck was a little expensive ($48) but great and they made duck soup with all the leftover bones and meat. They have a eight treasure sticky rice dessert that I've never had and it was a nice change to the regular deserts. I really liked it. Parking is a little tough, but it's SF

I've lived in the Richmond district for over 50years now and never been there till just last week. I was pleasantly surprised how good the place was.I've never wandered in because the outside was kinda shabby and unappealing, but once you go inside, it's completely different. Very nice decor and clean. Had a group of 12 and at the end of the night, we were all happy we came here. The foods tasty and most dishes are reasonable. The Peking duck was kinda expensive at $48 but it was good. The Chilien sea bass was good but small. The chicken wings were crispy and very tasty. A little spicy but good. Service was pretty good and most pricing was reasonable.

We hosted a two-table dinner for family friends in the SFBA. They come here often and say that the resto was not always so crowded, but after the remodel business really improved.
Indeed on this Saturday night the place was chaotic with all tables full and hardly enough room to walk.
Instead of two tables together the best the resto could do was one table in the front and one in the back. That is really insane and not conducive to any attempt at a speech or conviviality. Essentially we just ate the food without much interaction.
It was probably a bad idea to have this done on a Saturday night, but the management could have been more cognizant of our wishes.
Nicely Remodeled and Reopened: Still Fabulous Cinese Cuisine
A lovely remodel, big spacious room---ideal for groups as well as individuals. My standards are still the Wined (Drunken) Chicken----boneless/ best for this classic---and Bean Curd Rolls (perfection for this vegetarian classic). See my previous review.

Though lving near Chinatown in San Francisco, the Richmond District's Five Happiness is my frequent destiantion for good eating. Shanghai-influenced food includes some of my favorites---drundken chicken (wined/ boneless---absolutely great), bean curd rolls (vegetarian), Shanghai dumplings, boiled dumplings.... The decor is better than most Chinese restaurants and prices are reasonable. Foreign travel groups (Taiwanese or Mainland Chinese) like this restaurant too.
Be the first to ReplyVery good restaurant made even better by owner
We've been going to Five Happiness for over 35 years, the last 20, fairly regularly.
The owner-manager, Bill, makes the restaurant go. He's one of those kind of guys who knows just about everyone who comes into FH, and he makes them all relaxed. His dad was a French chef, and Bill picked up a western kind of dignity not found in most Chinese restaurants.
The kind of cooking at FH can be described at Shanghai-Taiwan-Anhui, with an occasional nod towards Cantonese. Just about everything tastes very good. And lots of times, just ask Bill for suggestions. FH's ribs of all kinds are customer favorites. The duck is always tender. And on and on. To be honest, just ask Bill for suggestions. He'll more often than not get you something not on the menu, but don't tell him that I told you this; he'll be inundated with requests.
Even the famous Chinese restaurateur, Cecilia Chang, and her equally famous son, P.F. Chan, dine here.
What this all says is that FH can rate a five at times, but averaged out should be a four and a half stars,
Oh, yeah his days off are Sunday nights and Mondays.
Well worth a stop. You cant be dissapointed.
Excellent food for a reasonable price. Better then any Chinese restaurant in China town. I had lemon chicken, General Tso chicken and a few different kinds of fried rice. Ive gone there several times. Every time I had top quality food and Large portions. I make it a point to eat there every time I go to the city. The service was good but the decor needs some work, restaurant was clean though. I haven't been disappointed yet. Free parking behind KFC next door.
