RUN to the reservations page!!
We drove 6 hours from Rochester, NY to join you and it was 100% worth it!!! From the warm and friendly host (forgive me- I did not get their name!) to our server Willie to the FOOD... everything was perfection. I will dream about that focaccia bread for a VERY long time and my husband stands by his claim it was the best chicken he's ever had. We have been fans of Chef since she was on Top Chef. Fox and the Knife lived up to everything and more. We LOVED it and are now self appointed ambassadors. RUN to the reservations page!!

Excellent experience all 'round. First-rate service from hostess/GM (?) Ash, continued great service while dining at the bar (Alyssa) - good food recommendations, good drinks, and the food was excellent. Maybe a little pricey for pasta dishes but given the all-around experience, still have to give full marks. The ambience is a plus factor too - keeps a somewhat intimate vibe while offering spacious layout and bar area.
Be the first to ReplyMemorably Wonderful Dining Experience
Last Friday, I flew into Boston to visit nearby family for a few days. I opted to stay overnight in the city specifically to be able to eat at Fox and The Knife with my mother and 12yo nephew - and it was so worth it! TLDR: If you can go, DO. We were seated up front, in the far corner, at a high-top between the window and the bar. The decor was classy without being fussy and it is tight quarters but not uncomfortable. The lighting was a bit too dark for my tastes; if I hadn't been studying the menu for weeks I don't think I would have been able to read it, and none of our food photos came out looking good which was a shame. But that's literally the only minor negative I have about the whole night. Our waiter, Fernando, greeted us and asked if we were there for any special occasion. I'm usually not a talker at these moments, but I couldn't contain my excitement and told him how much we'd been looking forward to coming. My nephew confessed I'd been showing him Chef Karen's TOC battles that afternoon to prepare. It wasn't long after that a manager (I am kicking myself that I didn't ask for her name - I don't know if she was the general manager, but I wouldn't doubt it) came over to ask my nephew if she could make a special drink for him - he was a bit shy about agreeing but she drew him out asking about his favorite flavors, etc. and came back to make him a rasberry lime fizzy drink in a pineapple glass - complete with a magic trick that he is STILL talking about. Fernando came back to take our orders - bietola & burrata for me, broccoli 'caesar' for my Mom - and was impressed when my nephew ordered the carne cruda. My Mom, who is never shy about chatting, told him my nephew has been cooking since he was a toddler and is very interested in restaurants and food (all very true). Shortly, the lovely manager came back over to ask my nephew why no one had told her there was a junior chef at the table! She stayed and chatted with him about her philosophy of learning about wine by tasting everything. He was totally fascinated. Our appetizers arrived and they were delicious and beautiful. Burrata is one of my favorite things ever and paired with the chiffonade chard, crispy shallots, and walnut vinaigrette it was really wonderful. Mom enjoyed her broccoli and my nephew described his carne cruda thusly: "the toast was toasted perfectly, and what was on top was undescribably delicious." Entrees next - I had the tagliatelle bolognese, Mom had the pork milanese, and nephew the agnolotti with braised beef in a roasted carrot butter and white miso sauce that he described as "immaculous." Mom loved her pork - could not stop gushing about how crispy and enormous it was (nephew ate half, hahah). I was honestly not sure I was going to like my entree as I've never had boar and am not always adventurous when it comes to meat, but I really really wanted to try the housemade tagliatelle. I am SO GLAD I took the chance because it was rich, and earthy, and the sauce was unctuous without being heavy. I ate every bit of it and probably would have made myself happily sick if there had been more. The lovely manager stopped by a couple more times to check in on us and chat with my nephew. I really think this will go down as one of the best nights of his young life - one he'll remember when he's my ancient age. As a doting auntie, naturally this made everything even better for me, too! He and I ordered dessert - olive oil chocolate cake with whipped cream and pistachio brittle for me, some sort of fragrant baked apple pastry thing for him. Neither of us could even eat half, but they were delicious. I loved how my cake was hardly sweet at all, and the pistachio brittle should be sold by the pound! While waiting for the check, nephew walked back down towards the open kitchen to get a look at the chefs working. The manager spotted him and told him who everyone was and what they were doing. She even introduced him to Chef Matthew Holland and nephew got a fist bump that sent him over the moon. Seriously - he had the HUGEST smile all night! I got the bill while he was having his moment and it was shocking how UNshocking the total was - really really reasonable considering we were having first class food and a lot of it. Conclusion: If the atmosphere had been less than stellar, the food would have been worth it. If the food had been "just ok", the dining experience would have been worth it. Together - it was really a night and a meal to remember. Chef Karen has always, on TV, seemed to be a warm, welcoming, open-hearted and generous type of person and her restaurant absolutely radiates those same qualities. We were treated like family - the type of family you haven't seen for a while and are excited to have around. The food was some of the best I have ever had - top 4 meals of my life. If I lived closer, I would go back at any and every opportunity. I really cannot recommend it highly enough.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre At Best
On the plus side - great atmosphere and fantastic waitress. We had read reviews that said it was loud, but we did not find this to be true. On the negative side - we asked for no mint on on the Brussels sprouts, and the chef refused to accommodate this simple request. That struck us as pompous and arrogant, especially considering we were sitting right in front of him at the Chef's Counter. We weren't asking him to remake a dish or substitute a protein - merely leave off something that was added on top. The entrees lacked flavor and despite looking amazing, the dessert had no chocolate flavor at all. Overall, the food was very disappointing, and we won't be back.
Be the first to ReplySuperb dining experience
This was a special dinner for my wifeโs birthday, and we had a great overall experience. Service from Hostess and Servers was excellent. Next of course were the appetizers and the main courses. All were fantastic! I love the concept used as various dishes were ordered for all four of us to share. This share concept reminded me of THE BEST dining experience my wife and I shared at Girl & the Goat Restaurant in Chicago. Most importantly, my wife, the birthday girl loved the overall experience at Fox & the Knife in Boston. Thanks to all the staff there!
Be the first to ReplyI, too, would like my $300 back
Oh man - where to begin. I hardly ever leave reviews, but felt I had to this time. Been to Fox & Knife a few times, 1st time Matthew our bartender served some poor drinks ($24 for a gin martini!? when this was questioned was told it was a "Hendricks" gin martini. Hendricks is $35/bottle, nothing premium), but the food was great. Second time we sat at the bar on a rainy Wednesday night - different bar tender, drinks were good and food was amazing. Because of the 2nd time, we decided to go here with friends and family for a little celebration - there were six of us, so good sized party (and check). The former bartender Matthew was our sever. He reiterated several times (in a slightly annoyed manner I might add) that we needed to put the order in for all our food (apps and entrees) so that the kitchen could coordinate it. Well, Matthew started bringing food - some entrees first, an appetizer, then we waited. An entree appeared. Then we waited. Another entree appeared. Then we waited. Matthew, in his annoyed manner, mumbled something that could have been an apology or probably an excuse. Four us had entrees, one of three appetizers had appeared, and two of us were waiting. And we waited. In an attempt to not have the food go cold, we started in. Eventually the other entrees appeared, but by then the mood had soured, Matthew was brusque and zero help. So much for the much repeated need to put all our food in so the kitchen could "coordinate". The drinks this time were great, the food was ok and service and atmosphere (thanks Matt!) were horrible. We won't be back.

Great service mediocre food. Came here after researching best restaurants in Boston so naturally we had a high expectation. The bar staff was excellent and they deserve every compliments. Food, however, was disappointing. Th burrata salad was at best, โmehโ. Pasta dishes were also โmeh.โ Pretty annoyed with the clams in the vongole being still sandy.
Be the first to ReplyRegrettable evening, wish I had my $300 back
Such a disappointment. We had heard great reviews, but our experience was bad from every perspective. Brusque, uninterested server informed us we would need to order entrees in order to put appetizer order in so they could โtime our experience,โ which apparently meant move us through as quickly as possible, as entrees were dumped on the table less than 2 minutes after appetizers were cleared (give us a little time to digest!). Food was fine but nothing special, other than the fact that my pork cutlet was pink and shiny in the middle, so I didnโt feel safe finishing the dish (my sonโs pork was cooked through, and he shared with me, as the portion was generous and he was not hungry, having just finished a table full of appetizers). The chocolate olive oil cake was actually tasty, and I had a great glass of Barbera. Overall review would be 2-star except that a manager noticed I had abandoned my pork, and when I explained why, they took it off the bill.
Be the first to ReplyNot impressed
Donโt get the hype Everything was way too salty The focaccia was ice cold, the pasta was below average. The service was good, and the atmosphere was OK. But definitely wonโt go back.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointing
The service is excellent, the atmosphere is very nice, the prices are hight, and the food was quite disappointing. We had three different pasta dishes and all tasted like the chef was a bit too chummy with the salt shaker. Even when the waitress returned one of the dishes, and brought back a slightly better one, the taste wasn't much better. If a high end Italian restaurant can't make good pasta what else can you so. None of the other fishes we ordered were worth writing about. Overall quite a disappointment when the bill for the six of us was nearly $400, including a generous tip. Can't blame the hardworking staff for the kitchen's problems. Oh, one more thing...parking is a nightmare. Not likely to return.
Be the first to ReplyWhen in doubt go with a local independent like this.
Terrific chef driven northern Italian spot, with a huge bar and counter (if youโre dining alone). In northern Italy they eat a lot of meat and carbs so if thatโs not your thing I would try the sister restaurant, Bar Volpe, which features southern seafood instead. The โorder at all onceโ trend is in force here but we did not get advance notice that the Lamb Osso Buco was 86โd. But the salads and pasta were stellar, and it took a while to get the server back to order to find that out. Hand picked wine list (refreshingly different than corporate lists), but this is a relatively tiny space so the bottle of red wines were not at cellar temp. A true local independent restaurant. Support it!
Be the first to ReplySome excellent choices
We made reservations and were seated when we arrived. The server was friendly and efficient. The food was unusual and quite good. The Brussel sprouts, in particular, were amazing. One person in our group ordered the chicken and it was also very good. The ravioli, egg and a lot of butter was not what I was expecting (even though it matched what was on the menu). It tasted okay, but not something Iโd order again.

Loved it. Really unique and unexpected favors. Service was like we were in someoneโs home. Ordered more than we could eat but loved every bite.

Could not recommend - expensive drinks and food average. Staff were not very helpful and were โgoing through the motionsโ We left and would not go back
Be the first to ReplyAs expected
The dishes were well crafted, flavorful and presented well. Portions on the small side. The servers were pleasant and the atmosphere was cozy. We plan on visiting again at the end of the month to try some of the other dishes. One side note, some of the staff were wearing masks. I'm not sure why the restaurant allows staff to work if they are not feeling well. But I guess it's good we are moving back to normal.
Be the first to ReplyThey read recent reviews! Going back again tonight!
I went with trepidation based on recent reviews. They must read the reviews and react. Staff bent over backward to be friendly, helpful and accommodating. Someone, not wait staff, also checked in on our experience! So, kudos for reading and fixing. The food was outstanding. No other word for it. We enjoyed our meals so much, we are retiring tonight to try more on the menu. I had the pork. It was huge, the sauce was so addictive and the cherries were super engaging. My mate had the bolognese. It was sooooo rich and good. We found the price point very fair.

My wife and I were so excited to try your restaurant, and it ended up being the worst experience of our trip to Boston. Extremely rude staff, we are not picky but it was not worth it at all. Stay far from that place.
Be the first to ReplySadly disappointing
The worst restaurant experience Iโve had in my life, choose another place if you want to spend a nice evening. The staff was rude as hell, not worth it.
Be the first to ReplyRUN AWAY
Absolutely disapointing from A to Z, worst restaurant un Boston. Very rude waitress, go somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food fresh and delicious
Excellent food. Wonderful wine. We loved the tortellini en brodo mozzarella di bufala and kale panzanella Our favorite dinner was the Milanese De Maiale. The portion was enough for all of us to try and it was the winner of the evening. The Chianti was the best Iโve ever had. Food was fresh and prepared so well. The restaurant is extremely loud but it did not bother us
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding food, but some service issues
We arrived right on time and were seated 45 minutes late for our reservation. Restaurant was jam-packed and uncomfortably warm. But once the dishes started landing on the table we forgot all about how cranky we were feeling about all that, and dug into one of the better Italian meals we've had in memory - high quality ingredients, creative preparations, everything clearly made from scratch and to-order. The place is a tad off the beaten path but worth going the extra mile for.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous, especially with allegies
You can read all of the other reviews about how great the food, drinks, and service are. It's all true - the place is amazing on every level. The thing that sets this restaurant apart is the way they handle food allergies. I ate here with a friend and it was so good that I wanted to bring my children so I asked about allergies. Wow. Every member of the staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about allergies, down to minute detail (really minute). They have separate pre-printed menus for certain food allergies and the kitchen is well trained to avoid cross-contact. When I brought my children, we felt so confident with the kitchen that my son (life-threatening peanut, tree nut, and shellfish allergies) even ate dessert. Everything was amazing from start to finish. If you can get a reservation, go!

Delicious food, great service, really good atmosphere (especially for Boston). Would highly recommend for just about anyone and any occasion.

Contemporary Italian. The handmade pastas were exceptional. Great aperitivo selection. A busy location for a reason; no outdoor dining for COVID.
