Paris in melbourne
Thru the rustic doors and up the stairs to the best value 2 or 3 coarse lunch I've had. 4 of us enjoyed the expert kitchen skills which made us feel like we were in paris the harvey bay scallops beautifull,I want more the goulburn valley trout with sorrel was a winner grass fed sirloin requested rare was spot on the gnocchi with braised shiitakeà was the real surprise no little pillows here robust blocks that really separated france from italy a winner then for the test a creme caramel that really set the bench mark this was superb and really showcased the skill at the kitchen all in all an excellent lunch with good service people who knew their job thanks everyone I've had a fix and don't need to go to France for a while now
Be the first to ReplyPushy rude service but good food
Had a 5.30pm Friday night booking and were treated like second class citizen because of it. Pushy waitress reminded us constantly we had to be out in two hours, interrogating us about when our third guest would arrive yet left us waiting five minutes to order when there were about five staff on the floor and only three or so tables. We are capable of time managing a two hour booking like most Melbourne diners, this isn’t unusual. I would avoid a booking at this restaurant unless it’s a second sitting. Asked for wine recommendation and wine suggested didn’t suit food at all. Warm night and to hurry us along our wine glasses were filled every time we took a sip interrupting our conversation and experience and at one point my glass was deliberately filled to about 250ml - 300mls which made me feel pressured and made my Chardonnay unpleasantly warm as it just sat there and meant I had to drink much more than my other two friends. Not what you expect at a restaurant of this calibre. Great food and fit out but snooty low quality service which would prevent me taking anyone who I don’t feel I could prewarn about service. Regret tipping but after been forced feed wine clearly wasn’t thinking properly!

Nice lunch
We went there for our Valentines’day also my first time there , the place nice and cosy but I bit smell when we first walk in due to building too old I think , never mind
Service was ok feel kind of awkward tho but the food was great
We ordered many dishes and all turn out great . Very nice place in a very busy little street cool and cosy
Recommended for all visitors to Melbourne this place does have good food. The champagne we ordered was the let down with my meals , was sour and kind of off we asked the waitress but she said that’s what it is , I finally left the champagne and not touch it.
If I was the manager I would immediately changed for my customer. But they didn’t do so . So please be aware if you have same champagne as we had make sure they change for you !
In general we like the food but not the service !
Wine Appreciation
Three colleagues and I attended a Wine Appreciation night upstairs at the French Saloon last week. Hardware Lane was buzzing with activity. Four course dinner with accompanying Pinot Noir's. A most enjoyable evening with good banter, food and wine.
I was also there downstairs a few nights beforehand for my wedding anniversary for a light meal followed by Jazz at the Paris Cat club. Also a very pleasant evening.
I tried to call this restaurant
I tried to call this restaurant five times over 3 days and also tried to book on line but could not as it was too close to when we wanted to attend the restaurant. It would be nice if they responded to calls! So it may be good but we will never know!
Be the first to ReplyFrench Saloon - fine dining in great location
I had lunch at French Saloon today. It’s upstairs overlooking Hardware Lane and Little Bourke st. Rustic decor in a tastefully minimalist renovated old building. Wooden tables with white tablecloths. Very extensive wine list.
We requested a tasting menu which allowed us to try small portions of a larger array of dishes. Every dish was described in full by the very knowledgeable and friendly wait staff, and delivered without long pauses in between courses. Perfectly timed. Our dishes included
1. Oysters, garfish toast
2. Cured Kingfish, blinis with caviar and spring vegetables with goat curd
3. Entrecote with bone marrow butter, salt baked carrots with black sesame dressing, hand cut chips, house green salad
4. Truffle brie, comté reserve, fresh honeycomb and lavosh
Grande choux with salted caramel ice cream, vanilla creme diplomat and chocolate sauce
Every dish was a winner. Highlights for me were : Most tender wagyu entrecôte I’ve ever had, and that bone marrow jus! Floral hints in the fresh honeycomb, creamy truffle Brie and tangy goats curd, crunchy choux pastry and excellent caramel ice cream. Everything really. It’s fine dining so not cheap but worth every cent. A little noisy with lunchtime business patrons doing long lunches.
Regards to the Chef and his team for a memorable lunch.
Just not good enough....
Somewhat disappointing given the hype.
Steak Frites and Steak Tartare all round but both these presented as pub grub French bistro fare with no polish and were accompanied by a good green salad but disgraceful, tired and soggy fries.
Adequate Chocolate Marquise let down by a too runny sauce......
Maybe the more interesting selection of entrees would be a better choice but won't know as we will not return given the competition in this restaurant space even in the CBD....Philippe's springs to mind
Expensive for what it is though the wine list is good. Service friendly and prompt but the room is really noisy even a third full and lighting so low made it difficult to see the dishes.
The French would be proud
The lunch was absolutely exquisite. Tucked away upstairs on Hardware Lane, this must be one of Melbourne's well kept secrets. Not at all pretentious, the food and service was excellent. The champagne was beautiful. What more could you want for lunch?
