Innovative and high quality
Had the omakase option. The quality is very high, but the novel combinations made this dinner an experience! Worth coming back and tasting other options in their menu. Space is tight, service good, somewhat on the pricey side. Definitely recommend it

Lunch on Saturday with friends, we walked in mid afternoon and got a table. We had the menu option where you basically you keep getting served until you tell them to stop. The food was very good indeed, small morsels but all in all a fine meal, worth a visit when in the upper west side NYC

We stumbled upon Gari at lunch after visiting the Museum of Natural history on our last visit to NYC. While planning this trip, we made a point to go back! Wonderful, fresh, well prepared sushi. We loved it again!

Top quality sushi and omasake, special chef menu. Everything is so fresh and no wonder its always packed. I definitely highly recommend the omasake chef menu. There are many japanese restaurants but this is really the best i have seen in ny.
Be the first to ReplySushi quality is still good, but the staff needs to be re-trained
We've dined at sushi of Gari on Columbus Ave many times in the past, but haven't been there for a few months, may be a year. When we recently came back, unfortunately, things changed and not for the better.
We ordered Omakase as we always do. Sushi quality is still good, although not amazing, which it should be at this price level. Our waiter was OK, but in general the service is far less enthusiastic than it used to be. When dinner for two with some sake runs $300-$350, one would expect an exemplar service with a smile. This was not the case.
The hostess was condescending and border line rude. Not something I would ever expect in a high-end establishment. Finally, the restroom was dirty, with a sink that has a missing drain filter. The owner(s) should spend some of that expensive sushi cash to better train their staff, fix the restrooms and keep them clean!
Packed with American customers, but food was surprisingly good!
My friend and I eat Japanese often back home in Asia (Hong Kong and Singapore), and after a week or so in NYC we were craving Asian food. Managed to get a place at Sushi Gari on a Friday night. Eventhough it wasn't billed as serving pure Japanese sushi cuisine, but we were game to try it.
Alarm bells went off when we entered and saw the restaurant full of Westerners - no Japanese, not even any Asians...! Thankfully the waitress was Japanese and the counter chefs were Japanese, so we felt partly mollified.
We opted for the omakase course, and honestly have to say were pleasantly surprised by the creative sushi served! Certainly unorthodox, and I'm not sure a purist Japanese or Japanese cuisine afficionado would appreciate the creative liberties Gari's team takes with the sushi, however we certainly enjoyed it. It was a welcome change from the usual standard (but good) sushi offerings. Would go back again if in NYC.
Note: Quite a few tables ordered American sushi like California rolls and salmon sushi, and Gari has this too.
Ridiculous โsushiโ and non-existing service experience
We have visit many sushi restaurants but this is by far the worst. The waitress was first of all very rude. It was our first time at the restaurant, and no explaining were made. She did not finish her sentences before she had turned her back at us. The noise in the restaurant was ridiculously loud and the prices too high. We got the eggplant for starter which made me nauseous, because of itโs disappointing and weird taste and consistent. We were served the deluxe menu, and never has sushi been so far from that term. It was ordinary, dry and completely boring. When we mentioned this to our waitress she rolled her eyes. We refused to pay any tips because we were so disappointed and both were feeling sick. Obviously this was not acceptable as one of the staff followed us to make us pay tips. We told her about our experience and were finally able to leave our worst eating experience in NYC.
So Gari: please do not sell the โcheapโ menus if you do not even bother making them.
