Eel restaurant near Kenninji Temple
An eel restaurant in a narrow alley near Kenninji Temple. Apparently they are famous for their eel rice served in a bucket, but since I was alone I ordered eel rice bowl. It was pretty tasty. The location of the restaurant is also good.
Be the first to ReplyNice cozy restaurant with good eel
A nice cozy restaurant in the Gion district: small pedestrian street, little difficult to find. Downstairs are some tables with chairs, upstairs you sit on the floor. Very simple but really nice surroundings. The eel is really good, itโs worth trying also some of the other smaller dishes, and by all means I recommend eel liver. Service is extremely efficient and polite.

What can I say, really disappointed. Had good expectations for a restaurant specialized in Unagi (eel). It ended up average food (really average), expensive for the quality, and the waiter was the worse I had in Japan, criticising clients in front of other clients. Even if you re lucky to avoid the bad service experience, price/food is not good. You ll have better Unagi in good sushi places for cheaper.

This is a restaurant for unagi (eel) dishes. Itโs in a small street of the old district of Gion. Itโs a small simple restaurant, quiet, nice atmosphere, very polite efficient staff. The menu is small but all dishes I tried are really prepared with care! A place I shall certainly return to and can recommend unreservedly!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time to eat eel in Japan
We went there to have dinner after we visited whole Gion area. This is a Michelin 1 Star restaurant. We loved 2 dishes we ordered. One is the grilled eel on rice for 4 people, and another once is skewered eel. Both dished are extreme delicious. Their price is not cheap, but reasonable.

The restaurant service staffs are attentive and friendly, trying hard despite language barrier. The restaurant manager and owner are professional and responsible, even paid the shipping fee to return our missing umbrella expeditiously. It speaks volume about their transition and culture in treating their guests properly. The quality and grade of the unaghi eel is top notch and worth coming back for. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Last week we had a trip to Kyoto. This restaurant is on our list. We told hotel concierge to book but the restaurant didn't accept for booking. So we walk in around 10:30. the restaurant are full. we asked restaurant staff to make a waiting. She told us cannot waiting with the bad manner and frustrated to us. Suddenly the couple of Japanese walk-in and can get the table so how come this restaurant make double standard !?

23/06 We had lunch at Gion Uokeya U around 12:30pm. I was told by the concierge at Swisshotel Namba that we should come to this place. Didnโt know that it has 1 Michelin star. It feels like it! This place specialises in grilled eel or Unagi Don. First time my boyfriend tried it and he likes it ๐. All dishes were presented beautifully and so delicious... minimum order 3000yen though. We didnโt know until we ordered several dishes and were told to add one more. We didnโt want to eat much food as we want to experience other street food. The grilled eel stick with salt and lime is surprisingly nice!! Too much food we had. I tried to book this restaurant before through the hotel concierge and was told that the restaurant cannot take any reservation due to fully booked and some restrictions. I found a website that they do book a restaurant for you but it charges $50 to book. So I took a chance by walking in and God blessed us with good food and good timing. No queue and we got a table. One of the best Unagi don I have ever had!
Very nice chef and staff. Highly recommend.
