Gogi was my third foray into Korean bbq and by far the most
Gogi was my third foray into Korean bbq and by far the most fun and delicious. The place does not look like much from the outside perched in a non-de script strip mall on California Ave in a residential neighborhood. The inside has large tables with ample seating for 6 . I really liked the charcoal burning grills instead of the electric grills I've experienced at other Korean bbq places. The waiter was outstanding. He explained the process and got us started with the grill on the first round then we took it from there. We had the seafood pancake to start and it was very good. I wish I could say what the rest of our order was but I let my daughter do all the ordering . The marinated beef and pork wrapped in the lettuce with the different condiments was outstanding. Liked the big beers and the flavored Korean vodka as well. They work hard here and you will not be disappointed.

Our first time grilling our own beef table side. All of the little side dishes were great. Served with good sauces. Paul was our waiter and he was terrific! A+A+A+

If you like poor service and grilling your food over low heat which basically steams your food this is the place for you. You could make better Korean BBQ at home with a simple Google search and anything more powerful than a cheap table top hot pot burner.

The service was very bad, my friend and I ordered food but after almost an hour there was still no food and no explanation. The space in the restaurant was very cold, but the waiter brought a heater to another table and didn't care about my table. Almost an hour but only side dishes. The people after me ordered and all got their food except my table. I will never return to this restaurant again

Can't speak to the authenticity but it was absolutely delicious. The meat was fantastic and the banchan left us wanting more. Order the pancake -- it's huge. Service was great, our waitress cooked some of our meat for us. It was a little awkward to ring the bell for service but maybe it just felt that way because Americans aren't used to calling for wait staff.
Be the first to ReplyUbered 30 minutes here from downtown and they were closed.
Their hours on Yelp and their front door clearly say they close at 10pm Sunday and we arrived at 9pm to locked doors and a closed restaurant. Waste of our time and money. Don't advertise inaccurate hours.

I absolutely LOVED this restaurant! The owner was so kind and patient. I had never been to a Korean BBQ before so he walked me through everything! Such a fun experience with friends. Will definitely be back soon!

Gogi is one of the few Korean bbq restaurants that still use charcoal for their galbi! This family owned small business is still one of our favorite spots in Chicago

Amazing food!! Gotta try the galbi and jumuelleok! Served with a charcoal grill with tasty sides! ONLY 2 PLACES IN CHICAGO SERVES CHARCOAL GRILL AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM. Also ask about the soju flavors, they have quiet a collection. Authentic AF!
Be the first to ReplyOwners are so nice! I've been going to Gogi for years.
The marinated galbi is so tender and yummy! Definitely get the pork belly or veal intestine.

Be the first to Reply4 stars for food, but 2 stars for dining experience.
Saw on "Check, Please" and decided we wanted to dine there. Some things have changed since the episode of Check, Please which featured Gogi was filmed, including the barbecue method. The website and also the segment showed a charcoal grill in the center of the table, but when we went, this was covered over on all tables and instead our server brought over an electric hotspot to use for cooking the meat. We had no idea how to use it, so our server prepared the meat (brisket and marinated beef) for us. In addition to the meats, we ordered the vegetable dumplings (delicious!), some spicy cold noodles, and also a very spicy hot soup. We ordered too much food and ended up taking a significant amount of the meat home with us, which got tough overnight and didn't reheat well. We were surprised that Gogi wasn't busier because we were there on a Saturday and made a reservation expecting a more lively crowd. If you want red wine, you'll have to buy a bottle, but you can get white wine by the glass. Service was efficient, but not friendly. We could have used some information on the sauces and side items served with our meal. Food was very good, but the overall dining experience wasn't great. Cost per person, including tax and tip was $60.

This has been a favorite of mine in Chicago for Korean BBQ. Charcoal grills set their BBQ apart from other restaurants. I really enjoy that they cook for you as well. Sometimes one does not know how long to cook certain meats. The restaurant is clean. Some favorites are pork belly, bulgogi and japchae. Last week we dined in and the service was bad. My parents had dined in for the first time and did not know how their service worked. The menu was not explained to them (I had to step out with my baby during the entire meal) or that they would be responsible to cook the meat for you. Unfortunately, my parents did not know that you have to press a button to gain their attention for service. So my family waited for a long time for their order to be placed. Also, the only time a team member came to the table was to drop the food off to the table. They were circling around to other tables assisting with cooking and not to our table. Then without warning towards the end of their dining, they were told that another party needed to be seated. We were not told of a timed policy of dining in, nor was there a warning (15 mins or anything). So as courtesy my parents had left with an unpleasant experience with no customer service. This is disappointing because in the past I have never had this problem.

Another day, another attempt to journey my way through the Chicagoland KBBQ scene. I have been next door to this place before at Yeowoosai but didn't realize there was a BBQ place in the same strip small! The KBBQ place is a bit unassuming from the outside and with the blinds, you'd never even realize there's a whole ass restaurant in this space. But nonetheless, was excited to try another KBBQ spot. There was another party when we walked in on a week night around 6:30, and the owner was talking to them a lot and making them feel welcome. We had the pleasure of being served by the wife (the other owner) and she was friendly! Meats were all good, although I don't feel like they deserve a solid 10/10. I've had better, but they are still good. I do love that this place has a charcoal grill set up which really does make the experience and taste a whole lot better. One thing to note is that if you want to sit on the floor in the lower table room, make sure to call ahead and reserve that space for a bigger party. I've never seen a Korean space with something like that (usually Japanese), but for a KBBQ to offer that makes me happy. I'll reserve it for next time!Overall, I'd say this is a good solid place to get Korean BBQ, but keep in mind you'll be paying a high bill given that this is not an AYCE establishment. Will be back!
Be the first to ReplyNot my most favorite KBBQ spot in Chicago, but it did
Not my most favorite KBBQ spot in Chicago, but it did satisfy my craving that night. Pros:There's a parking lotIt's not too shabby inside! Comfortable, ample seating. Cons: Not a good spot to try KoreanBBQ for the first time, since there's not much attention from staff. If you're not a newbie, and know what you're doing, this spot could work out. I just didn't like that we were sort of ignored when we asked for just about anything. The place was maybe 1/4 full so not sure what the deal was that day. I wouldn't rule this place out if you're in the area and looking for quick KBBQ, but it wouldn't be a spot I'd go out of my way to try. Overall, the meats are okay and I didn't hate it. Just didn't love it either.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible.
Extremely understaffed, sides tasted off, they brought out 5-6 tiny banchans in tiny plastic cups for a group of 8, which did not get refilled at all, they gave us 3-4 pieces of lettuce for our entire table, the meat was flavorless and tasted strange (except for the bugolgi and galbi), japchae tasted off, rice came out way too late, waiter would not let us grill a bunch of our meats but we later saw tables of Korean customers doing what he would not let us. Furious about the poor experience especially after spending hundreds of dollars for a birthday dinner.Go anywhere else. Cho Sun Ok, Chicago Kalbi, Kim's Korean, San Su Gap Sun, etc.

Was visiting Chicago with the family and wanted to take them for Korean BBQ- my teens haven't eaten a lot of Korean food. I was looking for a place that would be low stress after a long day of museums and walking, so I chose Gogi after reading about the great service. And because they had parking, that was a big plus for my spouse. Well, the service WAS great- so kind and helpful. And the galbi was SO good. Lots of banchan and all of it good- and a good variety. Spouse and I loved the kimchi and spicy pickled daikon. I loved the odeng... so tender and delicate flavor. We also loved the bean paste... they said it was one of their specialties. One of my teens - not normally super adventurous - tried every single thing on the table and declared each thing somewhere between "fine" and "delicious" which is seriously high praise. My other teen was really exhausted and just quietly and happily chowed down on the galbi, bul go gi, japchae, and mandu. I wish we had ordered the seafood pajeon- another table had ordered it and it looked great. Also, it was HUGE!
