This is an old school banquet-style dim sum restaurant with food offered from carts being pushed around. The food was okay; not bad but also not great. The dim sum wasn't as hot nor as fresh as I would have hoped and not everything was handmade. Overall there are probably better places in NYC but for Manhattan this is probably as good as you can get.

Stopped into Golden Unicorn for a mid week dim sum while in the city for work and man am I glad I did! Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection! Highlights included the steamed shrimp dumplings, turnip cake, shumai, piggy buns and pineapple buns. The servers were attentive, and the cart servers were abundant but not overly pushy. I will be back!

Food was ok. Desserts were great. But yeah I would've preferred Jing Fong or Tim Ho Won instead. Golden Unicorn tasted very bland, I see why they gave so many sauce packets.

Dim Sum selection was not good. They tasted ok. Wow! Prices were ridiculously high while we only ordered basic dishes! This place used to be great. Pandemic, food prices or what not... we aren't going back there any time soon.

Truly exceptional dim sum - easily detectable from the standard imports. Sesame balls were soft and melts in your mouth. The radish cakes tasted like they were freshly made. The phoenix claws were flavorful. Cart ladies were pushing their dishes as usual, but not overbearingly so. Overall, we were delighted with all our choices, and certain that you'd enjoy the food if you were here. Highly recommend.

My partner and I stopped by Golden Unicorn on a Friday night at around 5:40pm. We went straight up to the 3rd floor to inquire some party information. To our surprise, Golden Unicorn (which I have never been to before), is modern, spacious and clean. The staff are extremely helpful and quick on their feet. I am also stunned to find out that they not not only owned the 3rd floor, but also the 2nd and 5th floor, while the 4th floor is the main kitchen. On the ground floor, they serve dim sum from morning until night. To sum, I think Golden Unicorn owns this whole building on East Broadway. Though they only utilize the 3rd floor for weekday dining experiences. And the secondary floors for parties and wedding. Each floor is spacious and it came with great lighting and two small bathroom stalls on each floor. The food is great but the prices on the higher end in comparison to the other dim sum places in a Chinatown. As the night progress, the crowd keeps on coming in. Mostly locals who speak English. The services are quick, the food comes out fast. It's a nice place to sit down but it's expected that the crowd and the noise level will go up. I would recommend this place for your out of towners and locals alike, and especially those who have never had dim sum before. It's a good place to introduce your friends to Chinese foods to.
Be the first to ReplyYour standard dim sum fare with great variety.
The dim sum wasn't mind blowingly good, but it was great dim sum nonetheless. My favorites were the piglet buns, steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed sticky rice, shrimp rice noodles, and sesame balls. I'll pass on the lobster dumplings and sweet tofu pudding next time. The value was great as we only spent about $30 per person. We came at noon on a Wednesday and the second floor was only half full. If you have never been to dim sum before, employees push carts of dim sum around the restaurant and you pick what you want to eat from the cart. We had great service and never had to go out of our way to flag down a cart. The employees were definitely most comfortable speaking Chinese, but I wouldn't be intimidated if you can't. The cart aunties weren't short or impatient with me even with my choppy Mandarin. The interior was clean and elegantly decorated. They take both cash and card and you pay at the front.

Probably won't come again but a funny environment

I haven't been back in years and thought to give them a try again. I was pleasantly surprised that the dim sum was very good! They also have a great variety to choose from. What I love is the ambiance and the service was very good, a step above from other restaurants in Chinatown. This place is of a higher class. I'll be back again no doubt!

It was good but wait wasn't worth it. And their waiting list skipped us even though we asked twice. Our go to dishes are - shrimp dumplings (good), shrimp rice wraps (okay, lukewarm), congee (good), tripe (good), phoenix claws (okay, lukewarm), egg tart (good) One of the dishes was called lobster dumplings but it didn't taste like lobster. Maybe just bigger sized shrimp?
Be the first to ReplyDon't be fooled by the lobby entrance.
There is someone there to communicate with the host upstairs. You have to take the elevator up. Once you arrive to the restaurant, all the staff is there to greet you with a warm welcome. They give you a menu with photos and you just check off the ones you want! Your drinks and cocktails will arrive by a robotic cart, which is so cool! They can seat up to 8 at the round tables which has a lazy Susan for family style sharing. The complementary hot tea is delicious! We ordered another pot. Everything is delicious but my favs are the shrimp dim sum and the fried rice! Food arrives very fast too.

Stopped by around 3pm and waited about 20 minutes for a party of two. The lady at the front of the elevators gave us a number when we walked in, and once a table was ready for us, we were told which floor to go to. It was pretty organized so that was nice. It was pretty loud inside as there were a lot of people. Upon getting seated, we were given hot tea right away. We had to ask for cold water as well. There were about three ladies with carts. We were able to get all the dishes we came in for which was nice! Every thing was delicious and they had the shrimp dumplings or Har Gow that I was looking for. Service was as expected, we had to flag the servers down for our check but they were all attentive when we needed something. Water was also refilled on time. Overall, a great place for dim sum and would love to go back when I'm back in town.
Be the first to ReplyMostly typical dim sum fare.
..shrimp dumpling (har gow), siu mai, rice roll, chicken feet and etc with the one exception of these adorable piggie steam buns. I'm not entirely sure what's in them, looks like the common sweet egg custard/paste, but smells slightly of cheese, which would be an uncommon ingredient in Chinese food. I like how they still have push carts for the old school dim sum experience of literally steaming hot food at table side. My chive dumplings and radish cakes were grilled to a crisp in a flattop cart right in front of me. You can, and should, take your time to graze in between courses before flagging down the next cart to peruse its offerings. Some dim sum restaurants, including ones I've visited in Hong Kong, have resorted to a paper menu that you'd check off your choices and hand to the waiter. They would deliver the dishes to your table all at once, which to me takes away some of the fun of dim sum. The food here was good, exactly what you'd expect of dim sum. The prices and selections were not great. I believe I was over charged for one of the items, but didn't want to make a fuss.

Scripy, spring springrolls in-time for spring time un-tis un-tis un-tis. Too bad that was the only good thing in the menu. No it's not. Yes it is. That's mean. But we're here to spring the truth. Was the unicorn golden? yes. Was the unicorn old, dusty, and reminded me of a ciggy fueled casino/one of those north Korean karaoke palaces with only one person sitting at a table with a terrified grin? Yes. Winner winner chicken dinner. But the service was great, shared some good eye contact which crackled with chemistry. Now thats what I call oxytocin.

There is a sign on the door saying they have moved, however, they have not! We climbed up some questionable stairs and made our way into the restaurant. Standard Dim Sum options. Everything was solid. Nothing was mind blowing. Fast service. Reasonable enough prices.

This place is a gimmic. Super over priced. Our overpriced orange chicken apparently doesn't come with rice?!? The corner spot by us has rhem beat. We also apparently don't have a server as we've been ignored this whole time and have to grab any server walking by to get water or place our order. There's a reason you done see any Chinese people eating here. Definitely a sham. I've been here many times and after driving 2 hours, I'm sorely disappointed.

3.5 rounded up !Authentic dim sum and great for a fix. A good mix of tourists and locals here. As someone who grew up eating dim sum, this was good not great. However, I do think that with dim sum places it is often hit or miss by the day, depending on how fresh the items you got are.The chive shrimp dumplings and we have been sitting out for a bit. The sticky rice portions are kind thoughtfully split into thirds, so that it's easier to share. The Crystal shrimp dumplings were good and had smaller/finer chunks of shrimp than I'm used to. Good skin texture Shumai was good and standard.

I visited Golden Unicorn a number of times, and the food is always solid. The staples - steam shrimped dumpling, shumai, pork buns, egg tarts, etc. - have great flavor. I would say that when considered individually, nothing is a WOW, but collectively the menu makes for a great Dim Sum experience and one worth repeating if you have a craving for the flavors. Where Golden Unicorn falls short on is its service. During my numerous visits, I have found that it'll take 20min+ to get the waiter's attention to place an order. At times, it can feel like quite a struggle to make eye contact with a singular waiter, despite there being more than a dozen floating around the room at any particular moment. After ordering though, you can expect food to come quickly. My advice is to make one large collective order vs. multiple small orders. Last thing is that you can expect a reasonable wait to be seated during peak times (e.g., 20-40min during a Sunday afternoon).
Be the first to ReplyIt's popular indeed and we had to wait for about 15 minutes
It's popular indeed and we had to wait for about 15 minutes outside as we try to get seats from the outdoor sitting. ย We ended up going to their second floor dinning. Here's some observations while they were serving outside. I did see some (maybe one) of the dim-sum trays uncovered as they walk from kitchen, cross the sidewalk, and walk towards the street dining area, which was covered. Majority though had another top tray covering the food. So, maybe that was just one odd incident and it was one of those fried balls with no cover that I saw exposed. We finally were send inside and took the elevator to go to the second floor. At one point, the lady was going to set up a table BY THE ELEVATOR and told us to wait and she will set up a table for us. Hmmmm. ย Eventually after five minutes, no tables or chairs, and we weresent upstairs for a more comfortable way of dining.I've been a dim-sum consumer all my adult life. Almost like a Sunday go to after church. Hence, I'm a very experienced dim-sum consumer and have ย personal insight to share.Service is always fast-paced when you go for sum dim-sum. LoL! Maybe because of Covid restrictions, they only have three carts roaming and the rest, you mark on the menu and they bring it over. There were no clear explanations when we sat down, I just found a pen and tons of this colored menu. Then we ask, ahhhhh.. ย I was right. We marked our orders, gave the paper menu and it all arrived together. Fun times! Why I gave them a three star rating: The shrimp was not cooked well. The wrapping was not as fresh as I would like it. Folks, I had better ones where I can tell the difference. To me, it was too pricey too. It was $5.98 for three pieces of dumplings where some house would price it at $3.75 for the exact same items. It's good, but there are tons of dim-sum restaurants to choose from. I'd probably not come back to this place once I travel to NYC for some dim-sum solely because I want to explore more in Chinatown.
Be the first to ReplyVery long wait times with a chaotic system.
Going on Sunday morning we expected a wait but the system they used made the process hectic. We got there and asked for a table for 6. They said the wait is 20 mins and we said okay. After 20 minutes we asked them how long the wait would be... 20 more minutes. After we finally got a table the food was pretty good. We were served some RAW shrimp har gow. So that was pretty disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the place to go if you want good Dim Sum.
There's no parking. They have the menu and the green tea and the carts which are super cute. Cute like an empty clear showcase or a person cooking clams and everyone holds their bowl out. So many freaking options. I mean I'm not going to name each thing I left ย photos check them out. That food was super fresh and tasty and perfect. It was not expensive. The wait was like 2 minutes and you had to take a number and go up in the elevator. Our waiter was as attentive as I needed which was good; not exceptional but fair. Best dim sum I been to in NYC and I went on a Sunday party of 2.
Be the first to ReplyI love dimsum.
I grew up on dimsum and dimsum is a part of my soul. I usually eat dimsum around 8th ave in Brooklyn, but wanted to try Golden Unicorn because I was in the area. Golden Unicorn has been around for a long time and is one of the better known dimsum places in Chinatown. I went on a Saturday around 11am. Me and my friend waited around 1 hour before we got seated. It's dimsum. Usually there is a wait. We were seated upstairs in what looked like a ballroom. It was packed inside. They gave us a paper menu and you write down what you want on the menu. Then they pick up the menu and bring you the food. It is very easy to order and food comes out from the kitchen quick. Most of the food, they bring to you from the kitchen. However, they still had cart ladies. But the main food, they bring out from the kitchen. The waiters were also very attentive and actively cleared dishes and helped gave more soy sauce when we were in need. Good food and good service! Just be prepared to wait a little before getting seated.
