I recommend this place.
The food and service is great. If you are looking to relax and want to have a few drinks and would like to try out some filipino food, then this is the place....!

Sorry I don't have photos, it was a double date with my boss and her hubs and it felt tacky to take snaps. Cocktails were killer. Get the Yuzu Gimlet or the Whiskey Sour or the Manila Mule. We had a large platter of skewers for apps and my non-filipino companions all loved all of it! (except for the isau. Even I don't like isau but hubs wanted to try it--and I was very pleasantly surprised. Be warned, it's gamey)The karaage porridge is, and I say this as a Filipino-Chinese who spent many childhood summers in Hong Kong, one of the best renditions of porridge I've ever had. I think because I love the citrus flavor in it. Karaage was okay, shrimp tempura was okay. Service was a bit off. They were lovely and attentive, but got a number of things wrong. (we never got our kani salad or our tofu sisig, and I didn't bother to look to see if we got charged--dumb mistake). They also were in a hurry to kick us out to make room for the next party, which is too bad because we were still hungry and totally would've ordered more

always a great time here! food is good, drinks are good, service is goos, and vibes are good especially when they have a dj playing. im filipino and can confirm they do a great job of putting a modern twist on filipino classics
Be the first to ReplyThe food was just ok for the price.
I was particularly disappointed in the skewers, all of which were way too salty; the beef one was very overcooked.

3.5/5, but rounding up to 4!Came here on a whim one evening and oh my, was it an interesting experience. Seated at the table next to us (these were two person tables) was a family with 3 adults, a baby, and a big ass dog, so eating with a tail wacking my leg was every few minutes was interesting, to say the least. Still unsure how to feel about this; on one hand it wasn't really the restaurant's fault, on the other hand, it was causing a disturbance for other customers. As for the food itself, everything on the menu sounded super exciting, but the taste was a tad underwhelming. We ordered the rock shrimp tacos, some skewers, the bone marrow, and short rib kare kare. The food was generally solid, but I felt seemed a lot more interesting on paper than it tasted. Favorite item of the night was probably the pork intestine skewers; super chewy and flavorful!

The food, drinks, service, atmosphere, all of it was 5 stars! We had a few different cocktails and they were all super. The food was to die for and we can't wait to come back and try more!
Be the first to ReplyOh my goodness.
I went here with my in laws, husband and brother in law to celebrate a birthday. I was looking for a Filipino restaurant in the city and this happened to have great reviews. All I can say is we were sooo lucky to get a reservation and I couldn't have picked a better spot. The menu had some traditional Filipino dishes but with a twist. From the minute our server came out, service was unreal. He was so attentive and helped us choose our dishes. The short rib kare kare fell right off the bone and the mushroom tofu sisig was such a powerful combo of flavors even the meat lovers loved it! We even had a DJ entertain us for the night, but the best part was the volume level was kept at a reasonable level for dinner. My only downside is that I didn't get to try all of the other amazing dishes so it looks like I'll just have to come back. My recommendation is to make a reservation early because it gets busy!

First time visiting this restaurant to celebrate Valentine's Day, food was delicious, decent portions for the price, just wished the food was warmer when it was served. Will come back to try other menu items or try the Kamayan feast they offer for 8+ people!
Be the first to ReplyDinner was not good.
Within a five minute time span, two staff came by to ask if my friend and I wanted drinks. Seriously?! Beef skewer was tough, chewy and salty. Could barely pull the meat off the short rib. And the table next to us probably knows the owners/staff. They went to the back somewhere and came back smelling like incense. Nasty incense. It was so gross! The only thing item that tasted good was the ebi taco. And there is no signage on the property. I had to look at pictures of the exterior others have taken to confirm this was the restaurant. Does it make the place classier and more upscale since it's more secretive without the signage? And the chair was some cheap metal chair. The back was low and uncomfortable.

I got in touch with Vanessa who assisted in crafting a wonderful birthday experience for our group of 8. The food was impeccable and so delicious. We decided to do the add on of a half porchetta & 2 lobsters , but be warned that there is so so much food! Come hungry! You will not be let down at the beauty in their presentation. We also ordered 4 pitchers of their house sangria which was also honestly one of the best we've ever had. During the dinner, our waiter Lambert (I hope I spelt the name right), was such a caring and attentive person. The dining experience was elevated due to his incredible customer service. We wanted for nothing the whole night due to our man Lambert. You only really see this quality of service in ultra high end restaurants. Dont hesitate on this, reserve! We will come back! Thank you again for all you do!

Great spot in LES, a fusion of Filipino and Japanese food with good cocktails! Staff was great and hospitable! Tried a variety of items the balut, intestines and more. Had a round of drinks there with friends and enjoyed! Definitely will be back to try more and definitely make a reservation!

Exceptional :) I really enjoyed my time here a few weeks ago. The vibes were amazing - great ambience, friendly staff, KILLER drinks. Each drink was so unique and there's definitely something for everyone. I highly recommend the rock shrimp tempura and the spicy Tori curry!!

A Filipino-Japanese izakaya?? I usually don't like "fusion" types of restaurants but this was great. My favorite of the night was the cod katsu sisig!!!!! Also had grilled skewers (chicken was so juicy) and mostly appetizers. Their chicken karaage came with the most delicious sauce ever. Cocktails were unique -- I love mango and yuzu so really liked that they're in cocktails! Would definitely come back to try all the other entrees.
Be the first to ReplyI always say that I can cook Filipino dishes so I don't
I always say that I can cook Filipino dishes so I don't really need to frequently go to one but the Gugu room chefs and proprietor is known to my friends and I want to make an exception! ย Honestly, it's the best Pig's ears I ever had. Very soft, yakitori style. ย The Gugu dish and the tofu kare-kare were excellent. ย The drinks - I had the Wasabi Mar garita & Rizal Highball, we're at par with great NYC rooftop bars. Plus, there's history. Our National Hero, Jose Rizal fell in love w/ a Japanese lady when he was in Tokyo! That's how this concept started. ย Thanks to Amanda who was very nice and accommodating and to Aris and Mark who I took away from the kitchen so I can have a pic! Cheers to Asian hospitality.

This newest LES hotspot is the best hangout venue to de-stress and recalibrate your chakras! The warm ambience, well-appointed furnishings, handsomely stocked bar, exotic yet eye-easy art, and the most attentive staff will knock y'all off your feet! You don't feel the time pass by when savoring sumptuous japanese-filipino izakaya fare, sipping (or chugging) classics or innovative cocktails and just chillaxing with pals, while being embraced and entranced by the coolest tunes and hearty beats curated nightly by the best DJ's in town!... Did I mention the history behind the name and theme of the place? Hint: Philippine National Hero and his one-time Samurai's daughter's love affair.Trust me, it's no mistake or coincidence that you got here, only fate!

Had an amazing time at Gugu Room! I had made a reservation for dinner but was running late and the staff was very accommodating to make sure I still had a space. The staff was friendly and welcoming and great at explaining menu items/suggesting cocktails. I'm still thinking about the chicken karaage and the spicy tori curry. The cocktail menu also had many unique items so there was something for everyone. Definitely coming back here to try more of the drinks. Such a cute place with a great vibe and they also have a dj some nights!
Be the first to ReplyI found myself at Gugu Room to celebrate a colleague's new
I found myself at Gugu Room to celebrate a colleague's new job. I was really looking forward to this; not only is she one of my closest friends, but after over a week of being out of the loop recovering from COVID and other life events taking priority, I was looking forward to getting back out in the land of the living. Filipino food is something I do not have much experience with, so when I heard we were coming here, I was excited to check out a new restaurant as well as some unchartered cuisine. Located on the LES, Gugu Room is technically a new restaurant, though from what I can gather it's more of a reimagining of a restaurant that was previously here. Like many Manhattan restaurants (especially in this area), the space isn't too large, but it's big enough that we didn't feel cramped - plus, they have a really pretty outside area. The interior was nicely set up, the decor had a darker color scheme and had a decent sized bar that served as a focal point. We started with drinks; I had the highball which was really good, and the whiskey sour was also a standout. The menu had a mixture of Filipino and Japanese cuisine; since there were close to 12 of us, we ordered a bunch of stuff which was spread throughout the table. We went full traditional as well, which included eating with our hands. They provide utensils if you want, as well as gloves and hot towels to help with mess. We had quite a spread: braised beef, fish, noodles, pork and beef skewers, sausage, and rice. There was so much food, and everything was delicious. My favorites were the different skewers - the meats were really flavorful and the sauces they came with only augmented the flavor. Service was great, everyone was very friendly and they were on top of service; everything came out at the perfect pace and they were super accommodating. Overall, I had a great time at Gugu Room - it was great to see everyone, and the food was delicious. I would definitely return for another meal.

The service was great and everything we had was very good. The kare kare was amazing. The ribeye yakitori was my favorite, super tender and flavorful.

Love the vibe here! Every single dish we had was ย sooo tender. Faves would have to be the bagnet and rock shrimp tempura. They also have a well curated drinks menu that you should check out.
Be the first to ReplyHad a fantastic time at Gugu on Sunday evening.
We were a group of 9 with a table near the DJ who started about 9. We shared a bunch of dishes, all of which were ย great. My favorites were the Agedashi Tofu and the Rock Shrimp Tempura, but everything was really fresh, served quickly and so tasty. I previously lived in SF near Daly City and have been to a number of restaurants with excellent Filipino food so my expectations were high. They didn't disappoint. The vibe is perfect, good food, good drinks, good music, great time.
