An omakase menu basically signals to the chef: I'm hungry, hit me with your best shot! Luckily, Hachi delivered on the food, but fell short on its service. We tried this restaurant after a long search for tasty Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price (no Miz or Sushi-Tei please!) Unfortunately, this restaurant started from a 4 star rating for me because we were treated rudely within the first 10 minutes. The waiter (who turned out to be the manager) rushed us to our seats, didn't know the fish included in the sashimi special ("It is just the fresh fish. I don't know, it changes."), and didn't tell us the first two dishes of our omakase. This is the FIRST time I have ever had omakase and had no idea what I am eating. I would have completely blown up at him had another waitress not taken over. She was cordial and actually informed me about what I was eating. The food:The dishes here were light, delicate, and well balanced. The fish broth for tofu was rich and flavorful while the wagyu beef was well cooked and seasoned well. I enjoyed the freshness of the raw oyster and sushi as well as the subtle flavors in the rice. The standard sesame ice cream was fine.So would I go back for 4 star food and 2 star service? Maybe. But Hachi really needs to train/get rid of the manager and step up its service. Once it does that, it could be a solid, go to Japanese restaurant in Singapore.
