Date of Visit: 3/19/2023Finally visit this handroll bar in Mission district with friends. The Handroll Project was opened by the previous Michelin Star restaurant Ju-Ni's owner and chef. There are only 16 bar seating in Handroll Project, with individual handrolls or set to order. We got the 10 pieces Hand Roll and with an extra of the special of the day. Suigei "Drunken Whale" Tokubetsu Junmai (300ml) $38Oka "Snow Angel" Nigori (180ml) $14We ordered two different sake throughout the meal, and both of them were good. 10 Pieces Hand Roll $98Salmon & Sesame Spicy TunaSpicy KaniSmoked HamachiChef's Poke Handroll Creamy ScallopToro Takuan Ikura & Ankimo A5 WagyuSmoked Uni & IkuraSpecial Hand Roll $8The special hand roll has amberjack with tobiko, chives and ponzu sauce. Miso Soup $5.5Miso soup is on the sweeter side, so they recommend to have it at the end. My favorites are the Salmon & Sesame, Creamy Scallop, Ikura & Ankimo, A5 Wagyu, Smoked Uni & Ikura, and the Special Hand Roll. The downsides are the price is on the higher end and it is quite rush throughout the meal.

I booked this over a month in advance and have been looking forward to the meal since my friends rave about this spot. When I arrived I noticed two counters on the left and right and I couldn't tell who was the chef. I realize that they have different people assembling the hand rolls. I decided to order all the fish that I like rather than getting the combos. The rolls started out good (kani/crab was my favorite), but I thought some rolls had a bit too much soy sauce so I asked for less soy sauce. The person assembling our rolls told me that the rice is pre seasoned but she will season the fish less. As a result the rest was under seasoned, and I could taste the fishiness in some of the fish; I regretted asking for the fish to have less soy sauce. We tried every handroll except for the salmon one, and also tried the wagyu specialty roll. I did have some sauce left on my plate so I dipped the wagyu beef into it and it tasted better. I liked that the rolls here didn't fall apart (maybe because of all the rice), and the seaweed was easy to bite off so my husband and I were able to share every roll. I wasn't a fan of the albacore tataki because it was swimming in ponzu sauce.

How ever the food lacked a pop that I was expecting. You had to put in the pickled wasabi to truly enjoy the food. 10 rolls was a little too much food. I would have done 5 plus the 3 expensive one but start on the expensive rolls first. Tip to book wake up 2am to get reservations .

I highly recommend a reservations come here. I got the five piece chef suggested handroll. It was just enough for me as I had pizza just before this. I think my favorite was the chefs poke hand roll. Next time I will have to try the other rolls. Just be sure to not come too full.

When I found out Handroll Project had finally opened up a reservation system, I booked a spot right away (for a month later, hah). Reservations are available at 8pm, 30 days in advance. Not the most competitive reservation I've experienced, as long as you remember to book by 8:30pm there tends to still be availability for 2 people. Definitely order the 10 piece set, if you're worried about too much food, don't be, and the additional rolls are worth it. The progression of the set is perfect, every handroll gets better and better and there's a good variety of different flavors and textures throughout. My favorites were the poke, kani, scallop, toro, and wagyu. Great service as well - we had a delay in getting seated and they offered us a cucumber salad app on the house, which was delicious. Our sushi chef so friendly too.I don't say this often about pricier restaurants, but I would definitely come back to Handroll Project!

This place was so so so so GOOD! Opened by the owners of Ju-ni (Which I heard many good things about, and I have yet to try!!) First off, the 10 course handroll menu is a must-try. Each handroll was expertly crafted and featured the freshest and most delicious ingredients. The flavors were perfectly balanced and I loved the variety - from the classic spicy tuna to the more adventurous uni and shiso roll. The presentation was also beautiful, with each roll being served on a wooden board with its own dipping sauce. My personal favorite was the A5 wagyu! But what really stood out to me was the homemade wasabi. It was simply amazing - so much better than the typical store-bought wasabi that most places serve. It had a smooth and subtle flavor with a touch of sweetness that perfectly complemented the handrolls. It was clear that Handroll Project takes pride in their ingredients and goes the extra mile to make sure every aspect of their dishes is exceptional. The ambiance of the restaurant was also great. It had a modern and minimalist vibe with an open kitchen where you can see the chefs expertly creating each handroll. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, offering helpful suggestions on what to order.Overall, I highly recommend Handroll Project to anyone looking for an outstanding unique dining experience in SF! I can't wait to come back and try more of their offerings!

super yummy!! cute place that gave an omakhase feel because you sit at the counter with a chef making and explaining it in front of you. the 7 piece handroll was definitely filling and the best value. favorites were the kani and chefs poke.

Finally snagged a reservation at the much hyped Handroll Project. Opened by the creators of Ju-ni (my favorite omakase restaurant in SF) I was very excited to try this place. If you hop on Resy a month in advance of the date you want, you'll be able to snag a reservation easily. Obviously the omakase experience at Ju-ni is a totally different experience than Handroll Project, but for a third of the price of Ju-ni, you can get some superb fish. The spicy kani, chef's poke (made up of tuna belly, hamachi belly and salmon belly!), toro takuan and ikura & ankimo hand rolls were my favorite of the night, but I pretty much loved all of them. The only one I didn't really like was the spicy tuna because it tasted gingery spicy if that makes sense and I really don't like ginger haha. I'm also not a huge fan of shiso so if you also don't like it that much, you can ask them to leave it out! I will do that next time. Also if I'm being super nit picky, some of the garnishes and ways of preparing the seafood lost the true taste of it. For example, the shima aji handroll had too much tobiko and smoking the uni made the uni lose the powerful oceanic taste that you associate with uni (now some people might like this, like my partner who doesn't usually like uni, he liked this preparation of uni). But I'm being nit picky! Everything was absolutely delicious and I would come back in a heart beat! Everything down to the miso soup (I had two bowls!) was so good and I left so full and happy. They also had a decent sake and wine/beer selection and everything was decently priced. If omakase is too intimidating for you, try Handroll Project first! I think it's great for sushi beginners and the atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back. The staff were all super friendly and I loved how spaced out the seats at the bar were. One last thing to add is that if they changed out the stools to ones that had a back to them, the 30+ crowd would be so grateful lol. Also I drove and found parking really easily across the street - there's plenty of street parking the area, you just have to time it right and be a little lucky haha.

This was such a cool experience! We managed to get a reservation for 4:00pm (definitely make a reservation as far ahead of time as you can) which was right when they opened, but we were seated quickly and they were prepped and ready to roll.We shared the 7 pieces handroll and then their special of the day (a hamachi roll) and the A5 wagyu roll. Highlights for me were the toro takuan and the wagyu roll, but everything we ate was delicious. Our chef was super friendly and she explained all of the rolls as well as the process behind them and happily answered our questions about the menu. The space is also really well laid out and not too crowded which added to the experience. Overall a super interesting and tasty meal!
