Great low-key spot for authentic Japanese food
Fresh, authentic Japanese food and friendly staff. Small but pleasant outdoor seating area. Wide selection of sushi at good prices. Definitely worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyService so lacking
This used to be our favorite sushi place for decades. The food has always been fantastic. And it still is. I think. If we would have been served. But the service blows. We arrived at our appointed time. Ordered a glass of wine and a beer and a roll. Said weโd order dinner after those arrived. And no. One. Ever. Checked. Back. With. Us. So sad.

Hayato is the new sushi restaurant replacing Nogi's and continues the tradition of great Japanese cuisine for more than four decades. Service and food are both excellent.
Be the first to ReplyAlways the Freshest Sushi and Sashimi
Hayato has been here in Claremont for probably 15 plus years. Family owned, long-tenured staff, and only serve fresh seafood for their sushi and sashimi. They also have a great kitchen selection of traditional Japanese dishes. Located on Foothill Boulevard, tucked in behind the much less desirable old shrimp boat that is now an all you can eat sushi/Japanese restaurant but that one only rates 2 stars for me.

We go here often. It is the best Japanese place in the area. Small, but fast and friendly service. Many of my friends who lived in Japan or of Japanese ancestry first recommended this place to us. Closed Mondays.

Good and affordable
Enjoyed a recent meal at Hayato. Four of us each had a different version of the bento box. I ordered teriyaki salmon and tempura shrimp. Includes soup, salad, marinate cucumbers. Very tasty! We were there at 7:30 on a Saturday night and got in just before the place filled up.

We've eaten here for decades (began with the old owners) and it's only gotten better. It never disappoints

We've been going to Hayato about every other month on average for the past several years. The fish is always fresh and delicious, the service always fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable, and you can bring your own wine for a modest corkage fee (the wine they offer is not particularly good). They serve classic sushi for the most part, but we often ask for a special roll with some spicy ingredient. Hamachi sashimi is something I always order and theirs is tops. I've had hamachi in dozens of places and it doesn't get much better.
Be the first to ReplyRacist and rude waitress
Rude and racist waitress! if you look Mexican don't go there!..when I got there I ask for the sushi bar and waiter said it was bussy, no problem give me a table, but then she says "if you seat at a table the sushi from the bar will take a loong time" so I ask her : are you saying that we should leave? She says nooo of course not, so I seat at the table, my wife told me she was being racist and rude, so I said: maybe she meant something else, then I start ordering from the sushi menu and then she said: better order from the kitchen because sushi will take tooooo long" I'm thinking wth? I really wanted to try toro So I told her that I can drink a beer while I wait. Then I asked her for slice lemon for my mirugai and she said sorry I can't! So I thought, enough of this crap and I told her to cancel my order she then said let me see what I can do, and then she brought my order in a few minutes and with lemon,,,sushi was good that is why I gave one star but very expensive $118 for 2.. we will not be back.. I've been to Japan and know of traditional sushi.. I left her no tip..she didn't deserve it.
If you want traditional sushi go to Ken's .
