Hands down, this is a must visit if you're in Providence.
The service is good, the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy while remaining fine dining. My scallop dish had 7 perfectly cooked scallops! My cup of lobster bisque had a generous amount of meat, definitely more than a garnish. Good cocktails and well paced, we never felt hurried or neglected. Go here tonight, you will not regret it.
Absolutely wonderful experience
My husband and I are in Rhode Island every couple of months, and we’ve had a hard time finding good places in Providence, that is, until our recent meal at Hemenway’s. The space is very attractive - tall windows and high ceilings are always a plus, imo - our waitress was fantastic, and the food was excellent. The crabmeat cocktail and Caesar salad appetizers were great, and the filet, and flounder Milanese were excellent. The key lime pie was incredible - one of the best we’ve ever had, and this is coming from a picky baker! Prices are fair as well - there’s not one thing we would have changed about our dining experience. Looking forward to our next meal at Hemenway’s when we’re back in RI!

This was a little fancier than I expected; Hemenway's is an old-school steakhouse that has much of the formality you would expect at that type of restaurant. There are huge floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of light even if you don't get a view of the river. My friend and I popped in for lunch as I was hoping to get a view of the river, but there are limited seats facing that direction. I got the lobster roll which was all the things you would hope and expect for in a lobster roll - big chunks of lobster and a soft, pillowy bun. Service was both quick and very friendly.

Had The Lobster Bisque To Go…Pieces Of Lobster In It. Sourdough Bread & Oyster Crackers…It Was So Good It Made Me Speechless!
A perfect lunch by the water
We love everything about this restaurant—the atmosphere, the view, the food, the setting, and the neighborhood! We came for lunch and ordered the lobster bisque, baked oysters, haddock with roasted vegetables, and a wedge salad. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious.

Fantastic experience at this institution! Came with a friend from out of town. The space and beautiful with lofted ceilings and a classy ambience. Service was very professional and friendly. Drinks were strong and delicious, and the food was very fresh and classic, yet unique. The salmon with beet sauce and Thai basil was one of the best pieces of fish I have had in some time.

Great restaurant that has been the top restaurant in the area for years. Really nice inside and the lobster is to die for! We had a great dinner there, we shared a steamed lobster and our friends had a stuffed lobster. Both were excellent! Cocktails were spot on and their wine list was excellent. We were too full to have dessert. If you are in Providence, don't miss this restaurant right next to Brown University with so much history! Service was excellent, although our waiter seemed disappointed we did not order dessert.
I went to Hemenway's as a group of four for a girl's dinner.
We had a reservation for an early dinner and the restaurant was quiet despite it being a Waterfire night. We all ordered cocktails and had a few oysters and calamari for an appetizer. The oysters were delicious! They gave a mix of what they had that day from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I ordered the seafood casserole for my meal. One other person at my table did as well and then the half chicken was ordered as well as the paella. The seafood casserole was very tasty, but not what I expected. I felt it was very light of seafood. I had one piece of lobster, one piece of fish, and then a couple shrimp and a couple scallops. it was mostly the sauce. The sauce was delicious, but it just felt like it was missing something. They do give you a side of asparagus which I dipped into the sauce and enjoyed. We decided to forego dessert, but they did have a good looking menu and some of their dessert cocktails looked amazing! The interior of the restaurant was really lovely. Everything was clean and sleek. The waitstaff was very nice and accommodating. I would definitely go back again, but I may stick to the smaller plates and raw items like oysters, tartare, etc. because I feel like the specialty is fresh, fresh seafood.

We had a family reunion lunch here recently to celebrate the birthday of a sibling and the restaurant handled it really well, especially letting us bring in a cake which they hid and served for us. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding -- our server Nikki anticipated everything we needed even before we needed it and made it a delightful occasion. We will definitely be back !

My colleagues and I ate at Hemenway's while in Providence for a law conference. It was suggested to one of them during a tour. We made a reservation, which I recommend because they were very busy. The restaurant was very nice. I understand it's been remodeled recently. It looks great. It was easy to talk to each other during dinner. It wasn't loud. The server was pretty good. He forgot to bring us appetizer plates and also didn't seem to like all the questions I had about the menu. He seemed annoyed. We were told by the tour guide we had to get the calamari. I'm not a big fan of that in general, but both my friends loved it. If you like calamari you'll love theirs. One friend had the scallops and said they were excellent. The other had the seafood casserole. I tried it and it was very good. I highly recommend that. It had great flavor. I wish I had ordered that. I had the 2 lb butter poached lobster. I was told it would come fluffed on the lobster shell. But it was served sitting in a bowl of butter. It was $80 ($40 a lb). I was very unimpressed with the lobster. I don't want it drenched in butter. I would never order it again. The lobster tasted fine once you got past all the butter. Also the plate presentation was poorly done. For an $80 entree I expected it to be better. If you took my meal out of this review it would probably get 4.5 stars. But my meal was the most expensive and very underwhelming. I do not recommend the lobster here. If I came back I'd try lunch instead.

Bar yes. Restaurant week menu entrees, hard no. Employee owners did not seem to care. Bummer.
Mixed experience. Great drinks and service at the bar to start. We both ordered from the restaurant week menu. Founder meunière and “herb roasted” half chicken as mains, Rhode Island chowder and Fluke crudo for app’s. Apps were good, the chowder was delicious as was the Rhed ’s hot sauce made for a perfect complement. Fluke crudo was very lemon-centric, but good. The half chicken was a butterflied and deep fried chicken breast and the Aleppo honey sauce did not work with the greasy breading at all. So bad it ended up back on the plate. The potato salad was potato chunks smothered in mayo and an indeterminate sauce, but tasted like eating mayo from a spoon. The Flounder also seemed to be deep fried and placed on a puddle of uncooked meunière sauce. Tried a few bites. Not worth eating. Desserts, pecan derby and key lime pie, were excellent.
Don't sit at the table near the stairs you may fall and get treated poorly
I was sitting outside and fell down steps. Broke my thumb scraped up my arm, They moved me inside to come in where it was cooler. Took the report waited forever for my food. I was on my way to the airport so I had to pack it up and take it with me. They still made me pay for the food they didn't discount it or comp it even though I fell on their steps. They had a two top table right next to the stairway so then I had to take my lobster sandwich all the way to the airport and eat it cold while I waited for my plane and my broken thumb giving them two stars really is nice.

Great service and menu. One of the best anywhere! Reasonably priced considering. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
Outstanding Restaurant
We live in Scottsdale Arizona and have had dinner there every time we visit Providence. Last weekend was my grandsons graduation from college and our family went to Hemenway's to celebrate. Everything was outstanding, the food, service and the restaurant as a whole. My grandson was still in Providence the next day and I wanted to take him to dinner, he said lets go to Hemenway's. Again the food was outstanding. Both days our table was ready and no wait time. Had the same server both days and she remembered our drinks, etc. Outsanding
Spectacular birthday meal, cocktails and waitress!!!!!!
Tonight, I celebrated my 62nd birthday with my husband and my niece. I began with a cocktail named "Oh Cherry" that was fabulous!!! We split the "Rhode Island Style Calamari" which was just a tad better than average. Our meals, however, were exemplary! I ordered the Angus Filet Mignon and made it "Surf and Turf" by adding the most AMAZING lobster mac n' cheese EVER!!!! My husband had Surf and Turf as well but added seared scallops to his Filet. My niece enjoyed the Honey-Aleppo Half Chicken. We split a slice of Flourless Chocolate Cake drenched in dark cherry sauce and drizzled with sea salt. It was delicious! Our waitress, Maria, was outstanding! I just cannot say enough accolades, and I can't wait to go back! P.S. Beautifully renovated, clean and comfortable.

Since moving to Providence, I wanted to try all the classic places. Restaurants that were raved about and still around. We were not impressed with some of these restaurants. But Hemenways was different. This was our second visit to Hemenways and this time, it was my birthday. They did not disappoint. Their dishes have always been prepared with finesse, where flavour counted. This place is highly under-rated, they are excellent. We started with their salad: Pickled onion, hazelnut, heirloom tomato, Banyuls vinaigrette, boursin crema. Very tasty.’ My entree:* Paella with swordfish, shrimp, scallops, chourico, clams, mussels, pimentos, English peas, saffron rice, This was an improvisation of a classic Spanish dish, not served in a large pan, but still delicious and captured the essence of seafood perfectly. My wife ordered the: Pan Roasted Salmon*:black garlic beet puree, asparagus-fennel salad, thai basil, citrus vinaigrette. This was good, but the salmon slightly over-cooked. .We shared a slice of Key lime pie, whipped cream, candied lime zest, toasted coconut. It arrived with my single birthday candle. Excellent finish to the evening. This restaurant was filled and always hums with life in a pleasant way. I recommend you try it. ~tiaotse~
Amazing Seafood
The food was amazing, prepared to perfection. Our server Nancy was extraordinary she was professional and very knowledgeable about the menus and wine list. She was amazing and she recommended the Sea Food Casserole which was incredible and the whole Lobster which was equally as wonderful. She also recommended the Bread pudding which as terrific If yo go ask for Nancy she was absolutely brilliant

Went with my partner for a birthday occasion. Service is average. Ambiance is fake upscale. Do not stress about proper attire like it states on their website. Families dined in with sweatpants, hoodies and hats. If you want to treat yourself to a fancy dinner at a lunch hour (because that is the menu they gave us) this is your place.

Went there last Saturday and got there a few minutes after 11:30! Service was superb! We liked the Rhode Island Calamari, but that's about it. We ordered 3 other dishes (clam chowder, pork chop and paella), and to be honest they were ok. But wanna highlight the paella as we think I got food poisoning from it!!! Threw up twice and kinda messed up the rest of our day. Travelled 3 hours to explore RI, but sadly felt sick! Hope proper food handling procedures are being observed in the restaurant. I don't want to eat paella ever again.

I am going to be as nice as possible about this monstrosity of a restaurant. Once upon a time I was a regular at Hemenways spent tons of special occasions here with my partner and family. And as you saw my previous review was 5 stars, boy have times changed. Hemenways once hired amazing servers, with class and respect. The service was so good- I would brag about how amazing the respect, service and professionalism was. What a freaking joke this had turned into. For this place to be held to the standard it once was, it has drastically declined and I wish I could put zero stars. Let's start off by saying as classy as a place this is, why are people allowed in sweatsuits. I mean full blow hoodies and all, once upon a time you HAD to dress up In order to get in here or you wasn't getting in. It was an unwritten rule but everyone knew, now you can come in here looking like you rolled out of bed and didn't even bother to brush your teeth. Let's get to the servers I encountered and boy they're so glad I didn't get names. So I chose this place for my birthday dinner (my actual birthday) there was about 10-13 of us total, I had 2 servers. My first server I must say was particularly not nice to my blended family. But was particularly nice to families who weren't blended. If you catch my drift. She constantly came over to ask if we were ready to order drinks, but never brought out bread that was asked for about 3 times. When she was giving us our specials of the night, she looked like she hated her job and us. So at this point I went to the manager James (he was nice, the only good part about this review ) and I told him I didn't appreciate her service and she was ruining my vibes and made my family uncomfortable, she was removed from our table and we were given someone else who was kind the whole time. Okay- here's the fun part. As the birthday girl don't you think my order of food should be correct out of everyone else's, wouldn't you make sure to do that? WRONG! Everyone else ordered something fancy, I got 1.25 pound lobster BOILED with asparagus that's it. My order comes out it's a stuffed lobster. How did you get my food wrong? It was the simplest thing, this is a lobster place correct? So as this was being put in front of me I said to the man excuse me that's not mine, his response in the most (snobby brat like attitude) DONT BLAME ME ITS MY FIRST DAY I GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS. At this point I could've took my whole family out and left, because the back to back ignorance to my family of color was incredibly DISGUSTING, and I am appalled with how we were treated. It gets better! Shall I keep going? So after my WHOLE family ate their meals and they were already bagged up, my meal finally comes out at this point I'm shaking, visible to all. I was so upset that my actual birthday was being messed up to the point nobody at Hemenways seemed to care. Not shocked! They bring out a "desert for the table, on the house" she puts it in the middle of the table, shouldn't you bring that to me? NOPE! What is even happening? Oh- and the lobsters they did mess up on they just said they were also on the house. But we were charged for on the bill, we didn't realize this the night of because I had so much anxiety from all the ignorance. So when I called the next day to explain my experience with a different manager. He spoke with the other manager and called me back. And said I will refund you the money we overcharged and I'll comp you some money. He made it sound real delightful, but don't forget we were charged for 2 lobsters that they messed up on and were told they were on the house. So that was removed from the bill and about 4 drinks that's it. So he said I'll comp you back 244.00 mind you the lobsters we got charged for alone were 140.00 total that we weren't supposed to be charged for so we got a lousy 104.00 comp when we easily brought in $900.00 + , and ruined my birthday. When I asked what would be done about ruining my night, he said 244 isn't enough? No sir 104.00 , racist servers, ignorant bus boys and terrible management aren't worth a lousy 104.00 comp back, maybe you should've told me to come and try again. No wonder they're always looking for severs online because they can't keep them. I wouldn't bother it's not what it used to be. Me and my 10-13 other family members will never come back here again. If your family is blended as well be careful. They pick and choose who they want to cater to. ( Nobody cares about your sorry apology Christopher, you don't hold yourself accountable on the phone but on here you want to make it appear as though you are so sorry, please hire employees who aren't rude, arrogant and racist)

I usually order the lobster Mac and cheese and the fillet mignon with spinach and mash potatoes as I think these are the best tasting dishes on the menu. These items are tender and good a solid 7/10. The ambiance is nice for a date out and the service is usually good.

Hemenways is a gem.
The food is very good and I love that there is an abundance of seafood options. The seafood casserole is delicious. I have visited several times and enjoyed many different meals although I find them overly salted. The restaurant is sophisticated and designed similar to most of the restaurant group establishments. The waitstaff do a nice job and are friendly. Ask for a table on the canal side for the best view.

The servers were super attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend for a date night or treat yourself moment. Everything is delicious starting with the rolls, the crust has just the right amount of crunch with a soft warm interior. The lobster bisque is rich, flavorful and has just the right amount of lobster chunks. Try the stuffed lobster. It was to die for.

Great place to celebrate AND eat fantastic seafood in Providence. They were great about moving my reservation three times for the night. For got my wallet and they don't have Apple Pay. Finally arrived for a 7:30pm birthday celebration. I requested their best seat. We were welcomed graciously and shown to a great spot by the window facing the river and a great view of a Provident mural. Our sever Theresa was AWESOME She was full of energy and accommodating. She made great suggestions, handled a picky eater with professionalism and grace. She had the bartender made a special drink of pineapple tequila with grenadine and a splash of pineapple juice. It was a candy lovers dream. Ordered the drink special which was awesome as well. I was underwhelmed at the crab cake portion but then overwhelmed at its taste. The paella was delicious with steamed clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops. It was a little spicy but not intrusive. Next time I want to try the grits and scallops. Enjoyed the caramelized cabbage immensely, it was roasted to perfection, seasoned and sauced with flavor. Kudos to the chef. Towards the end of our meal things slowed down. Took a while to get the dessert menu and then nothing appealed to us. Ended up with the chocolate flourless cake. Not a fan, but it was quite good with a hint of salt to pop the flavor. We got our check but it was never picked back up so we could express our gratitude to Theresa, tipped her well I think.

I really enjoyed my meal! I had the baked stuffed shrimp and they were delicious. I started with a cup of creamy chowder, which was also good. We finished with a chocolate mousse dessert which was just ok for me. The waitress was fantastic and the ambience was so nice for a date night. If I had to give feedback, I would just suggest that the serve the baked stuffed shrimp with something other than a mound of mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes made the meal too much. I could not even eat them. Might I suggest whipped parsnips, whipped sweet potatoes, a small portion of rice pilaf. The potatoes were simply too heavy but overall, we enjoyed our time here.

Very busy , but had a nice calmness to the dining experience. We had Elly as our server, she was outstanding . Oysters , cherry stones, and Lobster bisque were all wonderful.Entrees were Swordfish, Seafood casserole were also great . Free garage parking . Just a great semi high end . Certainly a classic in RI

I will keep this simple; Brandi was a great server. Our dinner of the shared shrimp cervice, scallops, and a special order of swordfish were super. We had a nice bottle of sonoma cutrer that worked well with this dinner. My childhood friend bob kinkead won the james beard award for his DC seafood restaurant where i was an investor. This dinner was its equal. I have never said that before!

Everything about this restaurant was wonderful, starting with our server, Juan. He was friendly, helpful, and never rushed us. The bacon wrapped scallops were the best appetizer I ever had (even my colleague who doesn't like scallops loved these). The seafood casserole entree had generous pieces of fish, shrimp, and lobster. The key lime pie for dessert was as good as any I've had in Florida

Traveling with a friend and the hotel recommended the restaurant. Absolutely blown away with the excellent service provided by Mason and the exceptional food! Highly recommend Hemenway’s ! Wow! Baked Shrimp was outstanding.

Well worth the visit. An outstamding collection of menu items. Beautiful view or the surrounding area/ Exceptional service. We were on vacation and glad we made the choic to go for dinner here. (Go early)
Annual Tradition Coming to an End?
Have been dining here to celebrate birthdays this time of year for approximately ten years. We drive up from VA to dine with our daughter and son-in-law. This year was a disappointment. The recipe for the seafood casserole has been changed to include more filler (breadcrumbs) and less seafood. It used to be creamy and light. Now it’s doughy and heavy. This year it tasted like something one would get at a mediocre diner. Service was ok. Three of us had the seafood casserole and were dissatisfied and disappointed. Paying for quality is fine. Paying fine dining prices that tastes mediocre not so fine.
A wonderful place to eat
This was by far the best food of our trip. We got the name from our boar tour guide and it was right on. I had the steak and it was cooked to perfection. Even the prestation was nice. My husband got the clams and muscles and said they were the best he ever had. Morgan, our server, was very attentive and always right on the ball to get everything for us. For us, this was the highlight of our day spend in Providence.

We arrived and were sat right next to the window with the water view and they also made a "Happy Birthday" card and put it on the table. The service is ABOVE and BEYOND. They're all so accommodating and detailed with anything you need to know.As for the food- absolutely delicious! Started off with the bacon wrapped scallops accompanied with a jalapeño maple relish and they were delectable!! As for the entree, the filet mignon was tender and perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were definitely the best I've tasted from any restaurant. The flavor is immaculate as every bite I took, there was an essence of creamy, salty buttery goodness lingering all over my mouth. The asparagus was also very good! The star of the show- the lobster Mac and cheese. TO DIE FOR! Dangerously delicious and rich, your mouth begs for another bite each time you take one. And the presentation of course is amazing!To end off the night, baked Alaska for two. I've grown up seeing and hearing about this dessert so I definitely had my heart set on it. I loved the table side flambé- it was unexpected and had my partner and I in awe. Would definitely come back again whenever I can, 10/10!!

Probably one of the best restaurants in New England out side of Boston. Food was excellent, staff was friendly and helpful. It's definitely one of the more expensive spots in town but absolutely worth the price tag. Highly recommend!

However, the staff apologized, offered us an appetizer, and (even though it was a wait) they made sure to keep us updated and came to gather us. The dining room was beautiful with almost floor to ceiling windows. And even though there were a lot of people in the restaurant, there wasn't too much noise. I would absolutely go back for the food but mainly because of how we were treated from start to finish.

Our waitress was very friendly and the ambience was lovely. We ordered the paella, stuffed lobster, and whole fish of the day, all of which were very delicious. The only improvement I can suggest is larger portion sizes given the price (the paella and lobster were both a little small). Overall, an amazing dining experience !

Everything was on point: great food, romantic atmosphere and service. They made our anniversary dinner special by putting rose pedals on our table and the host, manager and server even remembered our anniversary. Staff was very knowledgeable and polished. I had the best lobster Mac I've ever had and my fiancé really enjoyed her salmon. The calamari and the chocolate mousse were both excellent as well. The cocktails were also very good. Will definitely go back.
I had such an amazing time at Hemmenway's.
They knew we were celebrating, so they laid down. Rose petals for us. The service was amazing. Food was absolutely delicious. I cannot wait to go back! If you're in Providence, looking for seafood, I highly recommend this place. I got the baked cod, cup of chowder, stuffies, and dessert. Everything was 10 out of 10.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.
2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* PerceptiveWash44, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* PerceptiveWash44 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to PerceptiveWash44 for any questions Peter may have as PerceptiveWash44 user fills the bid.
3.) Finding the Reservation
* PerceptiveWash44 now uses their connections at Hemenway's Restaurant Providence to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If PerceptiveWash44 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.
4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, PerceptiveWash44 receives the $200 reward which is credited to PerceptiveWash44's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Hemenway's Restaurant Providence!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
