The best sushi in San Diego.
....period. Mitsu is the owner and the master chef. He is a true gentleman and a real master chef. You must try this place. A reservation is a must.

Love love love this sushi spot! We went yesterday with family in town and we woke up talking about it so I had to leave a review. We sat at the bar and the chefs were kind and funny and didn't make us feel bad for any modifications due to our food allergies. (Gluten free heaven might I add!) Definitely higher price point but worth it in our opinion. We will definitely be back!

This is the best sushi in La Jolla and possibly San Diego! The food is always top-notch and even though it is a little expensive, I am guaranteed to have the perfect meal here
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding.
Excellent service. High quality sushi. Casual but very nice indoor/outdoor atmosphere in a small grouping of restaurants (the word mall doesn't do the area justice). Pricey but worth it if you are looking for top quality.
Be the first to ReplyGreat owner, great food quality & tastes, but fix-its
Great owner, great food quality & tastes, but fix-its include: 1) sushi nigiri rice did not stick together so almost all our pieces made sadly fall apart with chopsticks or even gentle finger grip, 2) out of yummy lobster soup by 8:30pm, 3) sunomono needs simple rice wine vinegar sauce not overly hot & distracting spicy sauce, 4) needs to have simple Plum Wine by the glass or bottle (even cheap Takara from Berkeley good), 5) despite OT resy last resy times @ 8:45pm, the lady servers all HOUND you upon seating that now "last call for food as the kitchen soon closes"...how horrible, RUDE & UNGRACIOUS. The lovely & present owner Mitsu, a proud descendant of famed Mr. Ota) hopefully wants to make $$$ & welcome & keep his customers ? Special place, nonetheless.

Great portions of sushi. Excellent service and food. We enjoyed it a lot.

Recently stayed at the beautiful Orli La Jolla boutique hotel and lo and behold, I found this gem! An extraordinary dining experience at this sushi haven. The ambience seamlessly blends relaxation and beauty, creating the perfect backdrop for a delightful meal. The quality of the fish and sushi surpassed my expectations, leaving my taste buds in awe. What truly sets this place apart is the impeccable customer service - attentive, friendly, and truly dedicated to enhancing your dining pleasure. A gem for sushi enthusiasts seeking a memorable culinary experience. Parking is a little tough but that's expected in beautiful La Jolla.
Be the first to ReplyFresh fish with pretty reasonable prices! My favorite
Fresh fish with pretty reasonable prices! My favorite aspect of Himitsu is while they offer very traditional sushi pieces, they also offer rolls and more creative dishes without sacrificing quality. There is something for everyone. I am a picky nightmare with sushi and tend to prefer Edomae style. This limits who I can have lunch or dinner with, but Himitsu solves this problem. Their nigiri is up there with the best omakase in town. One of my favorite sushi spots!

3.500 stars. We really wanted to love Himitsu, but ended up walking away slightly hungry and slightly dissatisfied. Service was on the strange side as well, which is why our experience merited 3 stars instead of 4. This is a smaller restaurant with an outdoor patio and a small section inside at the bar in front of the sushi chefs. The bathroom is a shared bathroom with the entire plaza, and you'll need to get a key from the host/hostess to use it. For the price (Around $100 a person+), I would expect their own restroom for their patrons. We were seated at the bar and could watch the sushi chefs work, which was very entertaining. We loved a few dishes--the salmon/hamachi crudo was a standout, as was the karaage. The sushi rolls were good but small--plan on getting at least 2-3 rolls per person in addition to appetizers. There are only 6 pieces to most of the rolls, and even the special rolls would have about 8 small pieces. Now, onto the service. Our server was nice and earnest and meant well but was either inexperienced or did not have good instincts on a number of occasions. We were handed the menus by the host and sat down and our server asked us what we wanted to drink which was fine. We told him we needed a minute to decide, so he left and came back exactly a minute later to try to take our order. I would have given my guests at least 4-5 minutes to get settled before coming back. After our rushed drink order and appetizer order was put in, my partner and I discussed what we might want to get for our rolls. I went to the bathroom (note the shared bathroom that required a key above) and came back to my seat. No sooner than a few seconds after I sat back down the waiter was there to ask us what we wanted to eat. I literally had not even adjusted myself in the seat yet prior to him coming back. We had mostly decided on what we would eat but clearly had not finalized our decision. At an upscale restaurant where I would expect the server to leave and let us discuss, he just stood there while we awkwardly discussed pros and cons to the different dishes and we felt rushed to make a decision. I saw him do this to a couple of other tables as well that were seated after us. Midway through the meal, he asked us if we wanted to order anything else, which is something that is typically asked when all of the food or at least almost all of it has come out. In our heads only half of the menu items had been delivered to us, but it caused us to have to remember what we ordered and what was left before we decided that we didn't need to order more. One final situation that stood out. He asked my partner if he wanted another glass of rose, which my partner said no to. At that time I ordered a second, different draft beer as there were a couple of sips left in my glass. He took my unfinished glass (who does that without asking?) to get me another beer but prior to doing this, asked my partner if he was sure he didn't want another glass of rose. (I'm sure my partner would have said something if he changed his mind!) In isolation, this faux pas would have been overlooked but there were too many others to overlook. One constructive criticism that they could improve is when the sushi chefs delivered the food items to us, they should tell us what we are eating or have the waiter come and tell us what it is that we are eating; it just adds to the experience and the ambience and is pretty standard for higher end restaurants. We had to guess based on our memory for what we ordered what it was that was being given to us. Anyway, perhaps it was an off night, who knows, and the food was decent but nothing that we would rush to return to Himitsu for.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing.
One of the best sushi places I have had in San Diego. Great music and ambience and amazing service- we had the best waiter. We went with the himitsu roll, 8 piece chefs choice, yellowtail collar, and wasabi Caesar. The fish is SO fresh. Best experience.

Gave Himitsu another chance, and was reminded why it just didn't meet my 5-star expectations. For the price, I really expect AMAZING unbelievable sushi-- but, it just isn't. The place overall is a bit underwhelming IMO. This time we sat in their little enclosed patio and recommend that spot over their general outdoor seating. The general outdoor seating just seems so unserious given how much you're paying for their sushi. They are also clearly dog friendly as we were sitting right next to a cute frenchie lol. I really wish I could remember our servers name but can't for the life of me, but I will say that he was on top of it. Very sweet and also gave us a little ice cream sorbet and candle whilst celebrating valentines (even though it wasn't valentines). Don't think I will be returning, but I will say it's worth a try!
Be the first to ReplyGood atmosphere and nice service.
However, I was very disappointed about the sushi. I went there for lunch and got the premium set Nigiri menu. As many sushi, lovers, I would expect high-quality fish, butter, smooth with high-quality tasting sushi rice. Taste

If you like sashimi this is the absolute best. My dad has super high standards and this place really impressed him.

Jessica and Michelle were awesome!! This place not only has fresh and delicious fish (I'm super picky on fish!) but amazing service as well! Cute spot in La Jolla and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat on the patio for lunch and had a wonderful time, will be back, thanks guys!!

I did their Omakase option and it was great! I like the small and intimate ambiance. Only critique would be they put us on the same time limit even after they seated us late, regardless I enjoyed everything :)

Gotta say this place was a nice surprise for us! The service and food was excellent. We started with spicy Edamame, and Shishito Peppers...followed with Big Belly Sashimi, YTS and the Miso Black Cod... which were all outstanding, great quality and fresh! Jessica the manager came by to checked on us, while Julia our server was helpful in pointing out suggestions for us. We'll be back to try their bowls at lunch! So if you're in La Jolla, check them out if you want good sushi!

Be the first to ReplyThis is a destination, Jiro-worthy, seven-star sushi
This is a destination, Jiro-worthy, seven-star sushi experience. Perfection is a goal seldom achieved by any enterprise. Yet you will find Sushi, and hit dishes, that grace the edges of that lofty goal. The hot dishes, like the exquisite Rib Eye Katsu Sando, lobster miso soup, and the Snow Crab Tempura were delicious. The cold dishes were truly stellar. Kumamoto Oysters, were the best oysters, out of a decades long pursuit, that I've tried. Fresh fish nigiri, including the: Golden Eye Snapper; Kanpachi; Seared Scallops; bluefin tuna, and the fisherman's, *boom* blew my mind. Many were so delicately seasoned that the servers politely requested refraining from soy sauce, for some. The suggestion was well rewarded! One, with a hint of charcoal salt, was perfect pop. Service was equally seven star. They want you to have a great experience. Management, too, was first-rate, and incredibly kind. It's a small place. Reservations are definitely a good idea. They have warmers, in their patio, that work well, on cold days. Parking is equally limited, in their small, bustling lot. Nearby street parking, and a hike, may be needed. If it is an epic sushi experience that you seek, this is your place, in San Diego County.

We had a party of 4 for dinner on a Saturday and made reservations about 2 weeks ahead of time. It was already packed by 7:30 so reserving seats ahead of time is highly recommended. Only 1 person at our table omakase ($120-$150) and everyone else ordered a la carte (nigiri prices are for 1 piece). The sushi was amazing - individually seasoned and our server was great at telling us which pieces to dip in soy sauce and which piece should be enjoyed as is. Even though we weren't at the bar seating, our server was friendly, helpful, and did a fantastic job timing our orders. It's not your "basic" sushi spot - I'd recommend it for those who really love sushi and willing to spend the money to eat here. We had outside seating so I don't know what it was like inside; however, the outdoor seating was well decorated to make you feel like you're inside. It was raining when we went but everyone stayed nice and warm by a heating lamp. The overall ambiance was great for a small group and we're looking forward to returning and eating at the bar!
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi I've ever had in San Diego.
Yup, I said it! Decided to go here last minute, on a Saturday. There weren't any reservation spots left. However, one of their employees, was kind enough to squeeze my friend and I at the sushi bar. Five stars for service, ambiance and food quality. Each roll and nigiri we ordered melted in our mouths. My favorite: the himitsu roll. All sushi chefs were kind and engaged with us during dinner too. This place is quite intimate and perfect for date night. 10 out of 10 recommend. I also strongly recommend making reservations too.
Be the first to ReplyI had a pleasant outdoor lunch here.
I discovered Himitsu is under Showa Hospitality; the same consortium run by the two dudes who also own Convoy Music Bar (San Diego), Torien (New York), and Hiden (Florida). A part of the outdoor seating is under the restaurant while the rest is under umbrellas. The restroom is accessed by key in a separate building and is shared by the other businesses. There is plaza parking right in front, but be cautious as it's quite narrow.I walked in with no prior reservation. I ordered Sushi Lover ($30) from the lunch menu. It came with miso soup and spinach tossed in ginger dressing. The Suntory draft ($10) was the perfect accompaniment to wash everything down. Everything was completely fresh while the beer was crisp, fruity, and delicious. Service from the ladies was excellent. The price tag aligns with the La Jolla neighborhood. Beautiful lunch.

So many great things about this place! First of all, the sushi is super fresh, lots of variety, and if you sit at the bar, the chefs are accommodating and friendly. They know their fish! Second, the service is great - everyone is friendly and very accommodating. The only issue might be parking so be familiar with the surrounding area in case you can't find a spot in the small lot. We've been a few times recently and every time we either found a spot right outside or within a block or two.

After calling into a few popular sushi restaurants on a Thursday night, Himitsu was the only one that let me put my number on a stand-by list. It's amazing how such places stay booked and busy on weekdays. Not even an hour after calling, Himitsu got back to me about an available table of 3! A nice sushi dinner must've been fated for me and my friends. The ambiance of the restaurant seemed really nice; we were seated at an outdoor table with twinkly lights set up nearby. Our waitress was kind enough to bring over the "Specials" chalkboard and answer any questions about the menu. Service was great overall, which was especially impressive considering how close we came to closing time. Some restaurants are just too focused on getting you out of there. I enjoyed a couple of hand rolls, while my friends tried an assortment of nigiri. The table's favorites included the spicy salmon and o-toro. We mentioned that we were celebrating a friend's birthday, so our waitress offered some complimentary ice cream for dessert. We picked the green tea and mango flavors. What a great way to end the night! Would recommend this spot to anyone in the area who's looking to eat good and feel pampered. There were so many kind faces.
Be the first to Replyeh mid.
super overpriced and the sushi wasnt even all that. we got like 2 sushi plates + miso soup and edamame and the bill was about 100. unfortunately it wasnt all that or worth the wait. server was super nice though and the place is wonderfully decorated.

..true 5-star experience. WE were a family of five looking for a tasty sushi meal, and were impressed by the yelp reviews. We opted out of the omakase due to the very high price (starting at $120/person), and opted instead for a combination of sashimi, sushi, rolls and appetizers. Everything was fresh and wonderful and a great experience. Total price was far less than the omakase, we loved the food, felt like we were all quite full and it was a great value. We hope to be back...awesome sushi!
