ALWAYS TOP NOTCH IN EVERY WAY (BUT VERY NOISY)
I treated my husband to a birthday lunch here yesterday. Owner, Louise, had kindly put a birthday card on the table for him. Nice, unexpected touch. There are always plenty of lovely staff and nothing is too much trouble. It’s our favourite local restaurant.
Our starters and mains were delicious. The locally-made breads and two sorts of butter were provided as an appetiser. We had no room for dessert.
Neil, Louise’s husband is a first class chef and Louise is a perfect Front of House.
The only small downside is that I have bad tinnitus and there are no sound-absorbing curtains, wall-hangings, carpets etc. whatsoever. The volume increases throughout the meal as diners try to out-shout each other and it does become virtually impossible to hold a conversation. I always end up using earplugs. I dare say that those without this aggravating problem manage fairly well. Nevertheless, because the restaurant is always packed, a few tapestries or similar would help matters enormously. We have been several times for various celebrations and there’s a private room upstairs for these events. It’s far quieter up there! I’m still happy to give it five stars on every other front. All our friends agree that the noise levels are not good.
Absolutely wonderful meal
I took my partner here for his 39th birthday treat. Booking ahead is a must - the restaurant was full when we got there! We were welcomed so warmly and there was a birthday card for my partner at our table which was a beautiful touch.
The menu was printed that day so we had a great sense of the way in which the offering changes day by day depending on the produce available. It was also incredibly extensive and featured really seasonal produce - I am a huge fan of wild garlic and was delighted to see it featuring o the menu!
We were invited to order drinks with our waitress and chose a light Italian primitivo - I already had my eye on the rabbit for starters and my partner the souffle - so it seemed like a good balance. The owner, Louise, then came over to take our meal order and that was a really nice touch also as it meant we had the opportunity to ask her for her personal recommendations.
For starters, I had a gratin of rabbit with wild garlic and macaroni. It was amazing, with a generous helping of beautifully cooked rabbit and really well seasoned. There was too much of it for me for a starter so my partner happily helped me ;-) His twice baked souffle was equally delicious, perfectly fluffy and absolutely lovely. The Primitivo was particularly good with the rabbit gratin, and really set off the flavours.
My partner chose venison with fondant potato as his main while I had lamb with wild garlic mash and ratatouille. His venison was amazing - perfectly cooked and full of flavour. My lamb was also lovely but the real star of the show was the ratatouille - it had the most incredible deep, rich flavour and I wish I knew their secret as I'd eat it every day!
I sadly couldn't manage my own dessert but was happy to assist my partner in devouring his chocolate mousse with mango sorbet - a beautiful affair and again, a nice touch was that they lit a candle on top to celebrate his birthday! It was really delicious and beautifully presented.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is also really lovely. We felt really welcome and looked after but not "hovered over". The time between courses was perfect and we never felt rushed. The interior is cosy and welcoming, and while it was full we didn't feel packed in or uncomfortably close to others. There was just such a wonderful convivial atmosphere, helped along amply by Louise and her lovely front of house staff. Huge compliments also to the chef (Neil?) for showcasing delicious local, seasonal produce in an unpretentious and warm way.
We will definitely be back!
On a practical point, there is no parking at the restaurant itself but there is a pay and display carpark right next door which is free after 6pm.
Fabulous meal!
Gorgeous food, lovely atmosphere, great staff! If you're going to be in the area, you must visit, you won't be disappointed!
Lunch with my bestie
Attended mid week - for a day off treat. I wasn’t disappointed. Had goats cheese pannacotta to start and lamb for main.
The lamb was exquisite. Pudding was a treacle tart and clotted cream ice cream. Just perfect.
Fabulous place
Excellent food and service.
My sister surprised me by booking myself and partner into Hitchen’s Barn for a meal for my 40th Birthday. I couldn’t of asked for a better night. The staff were excellent, polite and friendly and made us feel like the only people in the restaurant. The food was incredible and service was quick. We would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant.

This isn’t the first time we’ve eaten at Hitchens Barn, we visited a couple of times before lockdown when it first opened and thought it was very good then.
We booked a meal for a Saturday night and well, it was even better than we’d remembered. We were quite delayed due to our babysitter getting delayed, I was a bit worried we’d miss our reservation as I know how popular Hitchens Barn is, we had to book 4 weeks ahead as it was. I called to let them know we were running quite late, they were very accommodating and slotted us in at a later time
We had the most amazingly delicious food, I honestly couldn’t fault a single thing. The owner was super friendly and made time to talk to us about the wine and ingredients in the food, the waitresses kept checking we were ok. The food was fast and fresh, it was simply wonderful and it definitely won’t be our last visit. Thank you so much, we both left saying it’s the best night out and meal we’ve had in a very long time. 5 stars and well deserved
Surprise 70th Lunch Party
12 of us gathered for a surprise birthday lunch at Hitchens …. my husband had no idea that friends from near and far and known for over 50 years would be celebrating with him.
Louise & her team are so professional! To dine at Hitchens is truly a wonderful experience!
Great Ambience as we were upstairs in the private dining area, so it was all systems go, a glass of fizz, much laughter before we sat down to an incredible & delicious Lunch.
Chef Neil gave us 4 options with each course.
Let’s just say the Cornish mussels, chorizo scotch egg,
Loin of local rabbit stuffed with black pudding & Spinach. Fillet of Cornish Black Bream with fennel purée and crispy crab cakes……
Chocolate panna cotta with raspberry sorbet & honeycomb or Buttermilk pudding with poached rhubarb & Blood oranges…. every single dish we each chose was absolutely delicious …. we all enjoyed ourselves very much.
Hitchens is exceptional ! You must make a booking if not been already.
Dinner treat
Loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked through the door, very welcoming, great selection of drinks . The food was amazing. I had the ox cheek and it was just brilliant, melt in your mouth tenderness, perfectly seasoned and good sides . Followed by a sharer dessert board which was the cherry on top . Love everything your doing there and will be back soon. Many thanks

Visited on a Tuesday evening with a work colleague and haven’t stopped thinking about the food since! Sublime soup, venison and bread and butter pudding (and wine)! Hats off to all involved. A fabulous little gem with a great atmosphere. More excuses to visit Oakham again are desperately needed.
