Although extremely busy Saturday night, service moves fast
Although extremely busy Saturday night, service moves fast around here. We were lucky to get a table even as the place was closing and got our orders in and food placed at the table in record time. The fried tofu in black bean sauce with broccoli was quite salty and didn't live up to my expectations - I wish there was more freshness in the dish. The sizzling lemon scallion soup came with rice puffs and had a light, creamy flavor which was new, exciting and not something I've come across at other restaurants. The menu for vegetarians was limited, but solid as in most other Chinese restaurants - had a couple eggplant dishes, tofu dishes, some noodle, and rice. After hearing the hype about this place for years, I'd say I was mildly disappointed and wouldn't be pointing friends as this to be the first place to try food in the City... sorry!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Szechwan chicken.
Quick and great service! We all enjoyed our meals. I recommend!
Be the first to ReplyWe sat down and the server asked us what we like to eat.
She then told us to trust her she will take care of us. Well she brought out so many amazing dishes for us. The entire meal was delicious. Please stop in you won't be disappointed.
Be the first to Replyi wanted to order take-out that I would pick up.
I tried to order online but the app wouldn't take my order. I made my way on their website to the takeout and delivery where I found a menu. I made my 3 choices and tried again to order online. no luck. I called in my order. when I arrived to pick up my food, they wanted $3 more for each item, $9 more plus tax more altogether. I explained I shouldn't pay that much because the price difference was their responsibility. person # one refused to adjust price. I asked for manager. Manager said they charge more when you come in. I said I wasn't eating there and they had no patience. so I left. dishonest/irresponsible business people should not have customer bear the burden. will never be back. Gary S from Portland
Be the first to ReplyThe food was typical Chinese-American deliciousness.
We arrived prior to open on a rainy Wednesday and started the line. Even at opening hour, the team was still setting up & cleaning so we were seated about 10 minutes past opening. The best restaurants in Chinatown aren't the "cleanest" by health board standards and this is no exception. Unfortunately, I forgot to look away and can't unsee what I saw, lol. Nonetheless!! We started with and enjoyed the Sizzling Rice Soup. It was a different format than I've experienced before but hit the spot on a cold, wet day. The we shared two entress. First: Famous Nanking Sesame Chicken. The sweet potatoes were an intersting and tasty addition to a typical Sesame Chicken. SO good! We also had Fang's Crispy Beef & Garlic Bok Choy. I don't even like 5 spice powder (it's the cloves for me!) but this was, hands down, the best Crispy Beef I've ever had. We were fortunate enough to be greeted and seated by Peter and we were thrilled. All-in-all, recommended!

Not to mention Keanu Reeves ate there . Definitely going back soon
Be the first to ReplyThis place is AMAZING.
We shared everything and couldn't have been happier. The flavors were intense and robust without being too salty. A local friend recommended this restaurant and I'm so very glad she did. It was crowded, which is always a good sign, and the food came out really fast. Service was excellent. We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyEhhhh, everything was cold, super sour, and or salty.
It pains me to say this, but if it wasn't for the decent service, this might be one of the worst Chinese restaurants in the bay food wise. =.(Potstickers were hard and leathery. The "HONK" peanut sauce was very vinegary.Shrimp pockets were the size of your palm but only had a tiny shrimp inside. The wonton skin used just tasted like oil. The same Honk sauce was very vinegary and not very peanuty.Melt-in-your-mouth calamari was battered and fried. It was soggy and swimming in oil and lemon vinegar sauce. Sorry, fried food should not be floating. It was also excessively salty and sour.Sesame chicken was supposed to be sweet with a little bit of tang. You guessed it, it was salty and sour without any sweetness. All the batter was falling off the chicken too as it was so drenched in that salty sour sauce.Like some people mentioned, the tea was the best thing here.Overall, the food was terrible. The food wasn't handled with care and some items just looked like slop tossed into a bowl. If you look through the yelp photos, you can totally see a wide variations of the same dish. Some look nicely plated, others look like a mess. I'm fine with this if this was a hole in wall, but when some dishes are crossing the $25 mark I will start scrutinzing. I'm not sure if they were having a bad day or this is how it is suppose to taste like.2 stars as the service was good even tho the food was terrible.
Be the first to ReplyOur first dinner in San Francisco.
I was looking forward to the gluten free experience based on previous reviews. Arrived around 5 pm or so and it wasn't too busy. I'm the only gluten-free person in my family but hubby and son agreed to eat all gluten-free meal because I said the restaurant would bring out dishes for us. Well, we were handed the menu and I said I'm gluten free. The older lady tells me order the gf items on the menu. I said what about other items? So I ordered green beans that she said could be gluten free, shrimp and apple, mogu beef, and calamari. She asked if we wanted white rice, I said yes. She walked away and two minutes later our green beans came out, then the other dishes, but no rice so another lady asked if we wanted rice. I said yes. So service here, not so great, but I don't care if your food is really good. Well, for the price I paid... No, not really. It was okay. Calamari was described as melt in your mouth. I wouldn't say that. There were maybe only 8 shrimp in the shrimp dish. Three people, four dishes and three cups of tea came out to $100 and we weren't full. We ate all of our food though because we were hungry. It's fine, but my expectations were higher after reading reviews about them making food according to what you like.

Was visiting SF, and had to stop in to try the famous kung pao where are you chicken, which was delicious. We also got the fried rice which wasn't amazing but the table side service was very entertaining. Everyone was very nice and it was very tiny and cramped, but we enjoyed the food and service.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely perfect.
Had back-to-back dinners here two days in a row with zero regrets--it's been three years since I was last in SF, and so I was determined to make sure I stopped by Nanking. Unassailably good food, and definitely best served by just telling them you're hungry and letting the chef decide what to bring out. Some of the highlights:- Crispy Egg Pillows: absolutely to die for. Light and flaky, full of egg and vermicelli noodles, topped with a delicious sauce. A perfect starter.- Shrimp Packets: fresh piping hot shrimp and zucchini in a flaky crust, drenched in peanut sauce.- Steamed Buns: steamed bao with melt-in-your-mouth pork and a delicious mustard sauce. Two bites of heaven.- Nanking Sesame Chicken: bitingly crisp and flavorful, served with rich coated slices of sweet potato. Extremely filling and good, perfectly balanced.- Crispy Beef: arguably some of the best beef I've had in my entire life. Perfectly crisp exterior, falling apart and tender on the inside. Flavorful and matched with some equally good bok choy.Paired with a giant flagon of hot tea and you can't go wrong. Really can't recommend it enough, and cannot WAIT for the next time I'm in town.

Make your way through the stacked beer boxes and relax into the unassuming storage closet like decor. You won't need to polish your shoes to eat here, but it also wouldn't hurt if it's for that real-real 'getting to know you' date. One of those? The low key vibe here might work. ย To point in the right direction, the sesame chicken (yes with sweet potatoes), table side fried rice, and various noodles are on point. The mapo tofu, perhaps a pass.Beverages are also nothing remarkable. They leave that to the larger meal.

It's worth the hype! Arrive early to avoid the long waits, especially on the weekends. Highly recommend the hand-pulled noodles with black sesame sauce. It's unique and topped with some fresh, crunchy scallions. The crackling beef was wondering too - the crisp rice added a nice dimension and texture to the usual stir fry.Service was quick and efficient. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplySome of the best food we've eaten.
The fang buns were wonderful as was the wonton's and sizzling rice soup. The Kung Poa shrimp had good spice without being overpowering or to hot to actually taste the food. My wife's sesame chicken with glazed sweet potatoes.

Came here more than 3 years ago (pre-covid), as it was recommended by a hotel employee when I was searching for "americanized" chinese food. My first visit, at that time was just ok. Honestly, a little disappointing. But, I was craving this cuisine again, and figured I would give it another shot. Well, this time around, it was excellent. They have seating outside. Temps were in the 60's, so I took full advantage of the nice weather. They don't have a huge menu, which is ok. And everything is priced affordably. I kept it simple and just got the Mogu Chicken, which is supposed to be "lightly crisped chicken breast, tossed w/mushrooms in a spicy garlic mushroom sauce" and a side of rice. This did not have one mushroom in it, which is ok. Instead, it appeared to have cauliflower in it. Im not a cauliflower person, but I enjoyed this. Over all, the dish was excellent. It came out hot with a lot of flavor. And I got a big a** glass of iced tea. For $20, this was perfect. Note to self, next time try the steamed buns with chicken. Saw several people order this and it looked good. Glad I cam back to give it another shot.

We somehow managed to get lucky enough to get a last minute table for six last night at this SF. I think it's been one of my favorite dining experiences in SF and affordable too! The owner couldn't have selected better dishes for us and made sure that there was enough for us to eat family style. We will definitely be returning!

Updating my review! Now looking at as a cultural experience- and it is a pretty cool/authentic old-school place

This was one of the very best Chinese lunches I have ever had in San Francisco or anywhere. Simply outstanding food. So why only 2 stars? The chef himself waited on us, and before we even had a chance to peruse the menu, he whisked the menus away, asked if we have any allergies or foods we can't eat, and then said he would be back with a delicious lunch. Then out came one course after the next: burgers, soup, and then a main course with sesame chicken and beef. When we ordered rice to go with the main course, a server came out with an elaborate hot plate of rice, (almost like Chinese fajitas), poured the egg on the griddle and stir-fried the whole thing right in front of us. (All we wanted was a couple of cups of brown or white rice). When we go the bill, we near fell over: $121.00!!!!!!!!!! FOR LUNCH FOR THREE PEOPLE. Usually Chinese family-style lunches are a bargain, so we didn't even think to ask about prices, and having lived in the Bay Area for 30+ years, I'm used to high restaurant prices. But this was ridiculous, and VERY underhanded. I will never go back there again. Think twice before you do, too.
Be the first to ReplySesame noodles are an absolute must try.
There's nothing in the menu that's not great. Have visited many times with different people with different tastes. No matter what they order its going to be great. It's also a bit of a celebrity magnet for some reason. The owner himself often checks in to see if everything is going well. I remember once when I went during a low traffic time and he took my orders and serviced himself. The place also has outdoor seating in a parklet. Worth a visit!

The house of culinary delight! Every time I visit from San Diego I can't help but hit up HON. The food is always crazy delicious, the service is lightning fast, and the staff are really friendly. You can't go wrong.
Be the first to ReplyNot authentic Chinese food.
You can do much better Chinese food for less of a price almost anywhere else in Chinatown. Incredibly sweet, sour, and salty and just overall aimed at tourists. There was no one else at the full packed (30+ people) restaurant who was Asian besides me so I should have known better. It is not worth it and I honestly have no idea why this place has any good reviews.
Be the first to ReplyOmg! This is one of the best tasting Chinese food I've had
Omg! This is one of the best tasting Chinese food I've had in a very long time. ย This restaurant was very busy and for good reason they are pretty famous in China Town. Every food item we ordered taste so damn good. I had to order extra for to go. Only thing is the ambiance is not top notch, but who cares when the food is amazing. A must try for anyone visiting SF.
Be the first to ReplyThis institution in Chinatown and opposite the famed office
This institution in Chinatown and opposite the famed office of director Francis ford Coppola is a must try if you are visiting the city. We had an amazing experience where the owner of this spot - Peter Fang basically surprised with multiple delicious dishes. We were poring over the menu when he walked over asked us what we liked and proceeded to send us over a series of dishes. We had no idea what was on the menu or what these dishes were called but each of them were super delicious. The seafood soup with crispy rice and the noodles with fish were my favorites. The beef and bao were exceptional as well. Parking is a little tricky here - street parking if you are lucky and if not parking lots are your best bet. There is one lot fairly close to cafe zoetrope which was fairly reasonable. Definitely try this spot for an amazing dining experience in the city !

Walked by because it was near our hotel and looking for a place to eat. Server was nice, food came out quick, but then its just hubby & I paid for vegetable fried rice, vegetables included few peas and tiny pieces of zucchini for say... $15.95 then when it arrived it is equivelent to one cup and thats with no egg, on a skillet though, but why though? ย My husband ordered combo fried rice with egg but its $19.95 and again one cup. But anyways for both of us. This place is very pricey and does not match its taste.
