She had a hankerin' for some collard greens. Pure and simple. She found some surfing for some Southern cookin'. Ina Mae Tavern. Never heard of it.
"Are you up for it?" Um, yeah, sure, whatever.
"They have a special with collard greens, ham and potato and bacon casserole"
(Potatoes and bacon are two of my favorite things to eat.)
My ears perked up like a dog when you say the word "Walkies?"
Sure! Count me in. Whoopie!
One drawback- no delivery to the South Loop. Rats!
The sudden craving overcame my reluctance to drive so drive I did on a Sunday afternoon. 20 minutes later we pulled up opposite the restaurant which had tables outside. Nowhere close to park so I kept the engine running and we called the restaurant. The hostess gladly brought the food to our car. She was wearing a mask and was very friendly so points earned there in both regards.
Back at the ranch we did a reheat in the oven. There was too much food to eat in one sitting-the special was a dinner for 4 for under $100 once all the taxes and such were added. I think we got 3 meals out of it.
How was the food?
Can I say "Yummy?" Very much so-simple grub well prepared. Collard greens with nice chunks of ham hock helping them sing. Ham is ham and always welcome on my plate. Potatoes and bacon casserole had us doing a happy dance. I want that recipe! Heads nodding like those cute little dogs that people used to put in their rear car windows.
Dessert was 2 cobblers-an apple and a peach. Both delicious!
Them belly full...
We didn't go in so I can't comment on the service/ambiance but the cooking would encourage us to visit in less-Covid times. An outdoor table when the weather gets warm would be just the ticket!
We'll be back!
