Climbing 2 sets of steep stairs in a dingy hallway with only a statue of Buddha to guide me increased my trepidation & wondering if I'd made the right choice for our party of 8. Indochine is a surprising small restaurant with an even smaller bar enough for 4. Our party of 8 were seated in a banquette with just enough room for comfort. We arrived early & were the first group there. The restaurant filled up by 6 pm on a Tuesday night & was bustling. It got very hot in there & I can't imagine the comfort level on a hot summer night. When seated our party was approached by a pleasant server who answered questions & provided suggestions about the menu for those in our party not familiar with Thai food. And that's where it gets a little blurry for me. I love Thai food. I love the flavors of coconut, galanga, lemongrass and all the aromatic spices Thai cooking has to offer. I always order Tom Kai Ga soup whenever I go to any Thai restaurant. Is my go to, and I love the flavors of the coconut milk & lemongrass, and galanga. I found the soup lacking any coconut milk. It's as if they waived the coconut over the top of the bowl and kept going. There was no coconut flavor at all & others who ordered it agreed. I will say the soup was good and had it been billed as another soup I would've liked it. But I was extremely disappointed it didn't have that coconut taste at all. for my entrée I had the Penang curry. It also had a very light flavor and did not stand out. As for the others entrées, everyone really liked their dishes, especially the appetizers. I found Indochine to be more of a lighter Asian inspired than Thai. The food just didn't have the Thai spices that I personally look for. Overall, besides the soup the food was good & our party of 8 enjoyed. Tip: I do not know if they have an elevator so if you can not walk up several steep flights of stairs I would call first to find out if they have an elevator.
