Amazing Kaiseki dinner at Iroha
My husband and I had a fantastic Kaiseki dinner at Iroha. Each of the courses were unique and flavorful, and we were equally as impressed with the presentation of each course.
Keep in mind that they donโt speak English here, so I may not recommend this restaurant if you are a super picky eater, unless you know how to communicate it in Japanese! One of the assistant chefs knew a few words of English so we were able to get a sense of the main part of each course.
Neither of us speak Japanese but we are pretty laid back and adventurous eaters anyway, and this was our last dinner in Japan after many Kaiseki meals prior to this one, so we knew what to expect. (We were in Japan for 10 days and this was our last day of the trip).
Regardless of the language barrier, they were so friendly there and the food and overall experience was well worth it!
Some Great dishes
I think the attention to detail the owner exhibits is reflective in the quality of the dishes, which are packed with subtle flavors. It is an almost flawless performance and the Michelin star is well deserved. My only complaint, and it is one of personal preference, not a critique overall, is that two of the twelve dishes tended to be more acidic than I felt was necessary. With that said, it is a truly memorable experience with a wide variety of fish dishes.

My wife and I chose this restaurant after reading TA reviews. Unfortunately this restaurant is closed on Sundays, public holidays and other times of the year. We spent one Sunday looking for its location with Google maps but despite the generous help of a few locals including staff of nearby restaurants we wasted 2 hours. After resting at a nearby Starbucks we made one final attempt and was lucky to meet a local man who managed to locate this place. Google maps is out by about 100m.
The best approach is from Osaka Hilton hotel (Umeda station M16 ) heading away from the main railway station towards the main road till traffic lights at Sonezaki -dori road. Then cross the road towards Starbucks cafe. This restaurant is located on the 5th floor in a building behind Starbucks. There's no signage in English.
Initially the restaurant didn't want to take any reservation for foreigners but we managed with the help of a local person.
The restaurant has 2 tatami rooms with another 10 counter seats.
The kaiseki courses are priced at ยฅ12,000 and ยฅ15,000 per person. We had the higher price course and were the only foreigners. The local customers appear to be regular clientele.
The staff weren't conversant in English.
We had a 13 mini course leisurely dinner over 2 hours. The dishes were sequenced perfectly and were outstanding in flavour, texture and presentation. We had several types of fish, giant shrimps, octopus paired with contrasting garnishes.
We had a medium sweet local sake to accompany our memorable meal.
I understand that this restaurant is 1 starred Michelin but there wasn't any poster display.
Definitely recommend this restaurant.
Excellent kaeseki restaurant, top chef, top Sous chefs, top service
The reservation for the same night was possible only After 21 h, it was more than worth the waiting! It started with a very friendly reception and some small introduction in English by one of the sous chefs. It was really a treat seeing the chef prepare the food, the sous chefs supporting him very well and the courses coming in a very nice speed.
We spent 2,5 hours enjoying the finest kaeseki courses ranging from various type of fish prepared in different ways to abalone, squid, finest beef in a splendid sauce with wasabi. The more than excellent sake was a perfect companion for this superb food.
I can only say, when you want a real kaeseki dinner in a very cozy atmosphere, this is the restaurant to be: Iroha!
