Seriously good bar food
They shucked the oysters, breaded the oysters, and fried the oysters up fresh for the Oyster Po'boy - impressive. Some of my friends were also raving about the burgers and the ribs. Great service too.

4 of us each had something different and each meal was very good. They have an elevator which was helpful for my elderly family members.
Be the first to ReplyLunch Date With Husband
Our lunch date was a good date. The ambiance of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. Finding a parking spot took a couple of trips around the block and a couple of blocks away. Which was great for walking back to after the meal we'd consumed. The food and service was excellent, we're already planning our next lunch date to try the pizza.
Disappointing Visit
To whom is may concern,
I am reaching out to you to express my disappointment and hurt in the actions of your co owner Peter on the night of November 14th.
On November 14th, my family and I went to your establishment around 8p to celebrate my husband and I marriage. My family had been to your restaurant and even considered it “one of their favorite spots.” So they were excited for us to try your establishment out. Unfortunately, this visit was like no other visit they had there and this will be my husband and I first and last time visiting.
We were having a pretty good experience, the food was good. There were a few hiccups with food and drink not being to our liking, but not anything to turn us off from the restaurant. The server was not to our liking. There was a disconnect and she seem to not want to serve us at some point. We still were looking past this and continued the night. In the early part of 9p we ask for the check and the co owner Peter bought the check out himself. He reached over my husbands food as he was eating, no face mask and places the check on our table and walks away. We pay $320 at your establishment and tipped the waitress what we seen fit for her service. I completely understand how tips work and what they mean to server. However, my family and I do not and will never tip a person generously for poor work. We left and waited for the elevator for all of 3 - 5 minutes. Once entering, Co owner Peter steps on the elevator with us and starts questioning us about his server tip in a annoyed manner. At this time, we are unaware who Peter is and why we are being approached if we paid our bill. We asked him what was the problem and he states that “tips are 20% and the tip is not included in the check.” Peter rides the elevator all the way down with us and being pushy about his server tip. We leave the building, but go back to understand and record Peter’s unprofessionalism to have video evidence. Peter refuses to come from the back like we’re attempting to attack him and we leave. As we pull up we see 2 police cars and 1 officer on a bike going into the building. So we park and we go back in as well to speak to the officers about how we were handled. Someone called the police on us stating “they were having a altercation with a group.” There was never an altercation with us and Peter. We wanted to know why we were handled in the manner in which we were.
I never leave reviews, but I will be leaving a review on everything I possibly can because I cannot express enough how embarrassing, hurt and confused my family and I as well left your establishment. I do not want to pull the race card because as stated before my family swore by your establishment food and service up until this point. However, I cannot help but wonder why the police was called when there was no altercation. Peter started a conversation that we wanted clarity on. He got to speak his mind and left, but when we went to understand why we were treated like we did not just spend $320 at your establishment. He acted as if he was targeted, when in actuality. Peter targeted us! He never stated who he was even when he placed the check on our table WITHOUT a mask while there is food still being consumed, he did not introduce himself as the co owner before he approached us about a TIP. Not the $320 bill, A tip! I’m so disappointed and this really ruined a wonderful celebration. I felt you all should be made aware of the face and type of person that is n the front line of your company and if Peter see this email you should be ashamed.
I will be contacting Alcoholic Beverage Regulation administration (ABRA) regarding you all face mask policy. "Per CDC guidance and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's executive order, all individuals over age 2 are required to wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Masks must be always worn while in our restaurants, except while eating and drinking”
Best vibe and some of the greatest food in D.C.
My girlfriends have been going to this spot for years and trying to get me to go with them because they are in love with the tall and handsome, sexy, Italian manager, Peter. I'm not single, but after meeting him, I now definitely understand why so many women frequent Ivy City Smokehouse. He is very knowledgeable and seductive, and looks serious at first, but if you can get him to smile, he looks like a young Robert DeNiro.
So, the food here really is amazing. If you love fresh seafood, this is the place. I had steamed clams, broiled oysters, steamed spiced shrimp, a double crab cake, and shared the striped bass special with my girlfriend. I was going to skip dessert because I am an athlete in training, but Peter sent us a brownie for all of us to share and placed the spoons meticulously around the edges of the plate, which is when I noticed his sexy, manicured nails. I've never seen a restaurant manager like this and was impressed because cleanliness is very important to me. I'm a desert snob, and give their brownie 5 stars as well as the rest of what I tried.
The staff is very attentive and fast on their feet, especially our server, who was Johnnie. When we asked for extra sauces or another drink, he literally ran back to the kitchen to get it or put the orders in. They have a gorgeous patio with a large firepit, and everyone fights to sit outside. We wound up taking a table next to the overhead doors which was better because as it got cooler, people started trying to move inside and causing a mess. I was a bartender for a while, so I know how annoying this can be.
They are definitely COVID-19 compliant. Hand sanitizer pumps all over with women's and unisex bathrooms. All the staff are wearing masks and gloves. We had to sign in for contract tracing upon arrival with the host, so they are doing it right.
Ivy City Smokehouse is pricy, especially for a casual restaurant, but worth it.
I can't afford to eat here once a week, but once a month is more realistic.
They have a really cool lobster tank that glows, and they play the best music mix I've heard at any restaurant in the DMV. It's a bit loud, but makes perfect sense for the location.
Tips: Don't be rude to the hostess or they will ignore you and make you wait. Be very careful where you park your car and don't give any money to the bums who say they will watch your car because they will take your money and go buy drugs. My boyfriend is a vice cop in DC and I know for a fact there is a point by the shelter around the corner. Best bet is to take an Uber or a Lyft. Ask for Anthony the bartender from Puerto Rico. He made us awesome drinks that weren't on their cocktail menu by request. Last, take care of your server if you want them to remember you. My girlfriends eat there sometimes three times a week and regular guests get treated like royalty. Cheap tippers get ignored.
I hope my review helps.
Poor Customer Service and Racist
On September 19, 2020 I went to Ivy Smokehouse and ordered the “Branzino” and added crab. The waiter I believe forgot my order and stated it would be out soon. Once the waiter arrived to the table with the branzino I immediately noticed it did not look quite as fresh as the last time I had it. I decided to give it a chance, but once I tasted the branzino I quickly realized it was overcooked and possibly sat under the heat too long. I notified the waiter and he stated he would get the manager for me.
The manager (who identified himself as Peter) stated there would not be any more branzino served until hours later. However, we realized that other patrons ordered the exact same meal it was being delivered to their table. Upon me going to the restroom, my friends identified to the manager Peter that others ordered the meal and why couldn’t I have my branzino recooked. Peter (the manager who is white) informed my friends that other patrons could order the branzino, but informed them “it was not available for me”.
At this point we were all confused and immediately noticed Peter was discriminating against us. He refused to provide any justification as to why I could not have the branzino recooked. We then observed 3 police officers enter the rooftop. Mind you at this point I had already paid my $170 tab for me and my friends and we also never caused any issue that would provoke such a response. The only crime was that we were black, just like all the rest of the black patrons and the mostly diverse employees working there.
So I ask why the escalation? I voluntarily spoke to the police and identified myself and explained the situation. Long story short, the manager Peter escalated this situation and displayed extremely poor customer service either because he wasn’t having a great day or he is racist. Either way this wouldn’t make great sense when most of your workforce and customers are minorities.
Please be careful when eating at this location and I would recommend eating somewhere else that supports all minorities and that also doesn’t get upset when you ask for your food to be recooked.
Wow
We went here for our late Valentine celebrations.
The waitress was great, I forgot her name, she had long redish hairs, blu eyes, well, anyway. She was really nice and helpful.
The food was amazing. My wife had salmon, and as soon as she cut it, I could see that was fresh. Everything was fresh and homemade, burger, fries, fish.
I really liked it and definitely we will be back.
Well done to the kitchen staff for making such an amazing meal, in short time, despite the place being packed.
I was pleasantly surprised!
I was pleasantly surprised by the great food! I had the Shrimp and grits and it was amazing! The atmosphere is very trendy and the service was top notch!

We stopped in on a Saturday night without a reservation. Luckily, the wait was only about 25 minutes. Once seated, service was really quick. I'm sure this is designed to speed table turnover but I certainly appreciated the piping hot food coming out fast. The smoked wings were really good despite the restaurant being billed as a seafood spot. The banana bread dessert was also surprisingly good. I recommend if you're in this area of the city.

We came here on Washingtonian's top 100 ranking. Friendly service, delicious food. Loved the smoked wings and the brisket. Cocktails were only ok though.

We came to DC looking for good places to eat and we got lucky with this place right off the bat. When we pulled up to this place, we thought "What did we pick here." This looks like a old wearhouse in a wearhouse district. Went up a long flight of stairs to find a wonderful restaurant and bar. We ordered lots of different things off the menu. Steamed clams, crab cakes, lobster, rib eye steak, smoked salmon. Well it was all excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The place just drips with atmosphere and charm. Can't wait to come back again.

We had dinner here before a show at the City Winery. My husband had the smoked brisket, which he enjoyed very much, and I had the char-grilled salmon entree. I was unable to get it with the aioli due to an egg allergy but found it delicious just with the black olive tapenade. Fingerling potatoes were very flavorful as well! Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
