Hands down this was one of the best steakhouses I've been
Hands down this was one of the best steakhouses I've been to ever. The customer service was fantastic. Alex was very great and didn't miss a beat when serving us. From the moment we walked into the restaurant we knew what was ahead of us. Definitely will be going back next time I'm visiting Austin. All the food we got was very delicious. Highly recommended to try this place out.
Be the first to ReplyPossibly the best steakhouse in Austin.
Everything from the service to the drinks and food was amazing! I am not a huge bread eater typically but their bread was the best bread I've ever had. J carver's is a must while in Austin!
Be the first to ReplySuper swanky spot.
Very dark and secluded. Perfect for a special night out. The food was phenomenal and the service was impeccable. I've never been to a restaurant where you get to pick out the knife you will be using for dinner. The sides are big enough to share and the potatoes were my favorite! Fish was buttery and delicious and we had a steak Oscar style (not pictured) that was excellent. I will definitely be back!

This place is my Jam! The jumbo garlic shrimp is out of this world. And we cannot forget about my favorite tequila. I can eat here every day.
Be the first to ReplyA Birthday Dinner Letdown at J Carvers, Austin I had high
A Birthday Dinner Letdown at J Carvers, Austin I had high hopes for a memorable birthday celebration for my wife at J Carvers in downtown Austin, a city renowned for its vibrant dining scene. Regrettably, our experience was marred by a series of service failures and organizational mishaps that cast a shadow over the entire evening. Our reservation was initially delayed by 15 minutes due to "car traffic," an inconvenience we were willing to overlook, hoping for a delightful dining experience ahead. This understanding, however, was met with further disappointment as we were awkwardly positioned behind the bar, an area cramped and ill-suited for waiting guests, especially near dining patrons. This setup immediately made us feel overlooked and out of place, a sentiment that was reinforced when the head chef personally greeted every table but ours, rendering us invisible in our corner. The neglect extended to our service as my wife's simple request for a glass of wine was seemingly disregarded, with the wine never arriving and our server clueless about the order when we were finally seated -- a half hour later than promised. This was just the beginning of a night characterized by delays and disorganization, as even "simple" appetizers and mains took an inordinate amount of time to be served. To compound the frustration, our coffee, meant to accompany dessert, was forgotten until after we had finished our dessert and the bill had been prematurely presented. Despite our server's best efforts, who was the only semblance of a saving grace in an otherwise chaotic evening, we found ourselves repeatedly reminding and asking for items we had ordered, including basics like bread. The culmination of these issues was the difficulty in even settling the bill, a final testament to the disarray that defined our visit. The restaurant's gesture to comp my wife's $14 dessert, while appreciated, did little to amend the cumulative effect of the evening's disappointments. Considering the significant cost of a birthday dinner in downtown Austin, the value and experience we received were exceptionally poor. In a city teeming with exceptional dining options, our experience at J Carvers stands out for all the wrong reasons. This review serves as both a cautionary tale for potential patrons and a plea to the restaurant management to address the glaring deficiencies in service and organization that spoiled what should have been a joyous celebration. The first impression is indeed lasting, and unfortunately, J Carvers has left an indelible mark of dissatisfaction. For those seeking a special dining experience in Austin, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyI loved it here.
First, the ambiance is nice. Dark and mysterious with good music, but low enough volume to hear your friends. I had the crab cakes, oysters and short rib ravioli. Oysters were good, fresh and briny how I like them. Crab cake. You need to try it. It's blue crab and not lump, but has a GREAT flavor with hella crab and a nice crunch. The remoulade was also good without being overwhelming. Short Rib Ravioli is fragrant and savory. It's good and I recommend getting it as a side instead of the as a full dish. It's very rich so I think it's something to share as opposed to it being your full entree. Bartenders Jesse and James (Team Rocket) were very attentive and open to helping suggest drinks or tweak things based on preferences. I'd definitely comeback. Also. Make a reservation. Even for the bar. This place is booked and busy, baby. If you walk in, you might miss out. I was lucky enough that the amazing hosts and hostesses were able to squeeze me in for a limited time.

This was the nicest restaurant I've been at in a long time; really fortunate to have the opportunity to dine with them at a business event. Most folks got the filets and loved them, I ventured for the ravioli and was blown away. I've never tasted those flavors weaved together so wonderfully before. Must try. Godfather was a solid cocktail choice, while you take in the classic steakhouse scenery. Service was pretty good. If you hit quota or get your bonus, swing by.
Be the first to ReplySpent our fifth anniversary celebrating with J.
Carver. Located in the space previously housing Holy Roller, but redesigned into a chic, sophisticated dinner spot. If you love bourbon, exotic, expensive tequilas and rare, cultivated wine lists, the bar is your spot. Bring your black card though. The experience of having a 2 ounce pour of Remy Martin Louis XIII will set you back $600! There is a good selection of dry aged meats, fresh seafood and pastas to choose from, along with decadent side dishes for dinner. We decided on the burgundy escargot, covered in puff pastry. Heavy on the garlic butter, we found the dish flavorful and worth the calorie splurge. For dinner, we shared a 30 ounce bone in filet of beef tenderloin that was sliced and served with sizzling shallot butter. The meat was perfectly fork tender and melted in my mouth. The broccolini was roasted and dressed with lemon, grana padana and tomatoes and just perfection! We also had the purรฉed potatoes, also delicious and creamy. Every bite was amazing! For dessert, the restaurant gave us our choice of desserts to share and we chose the crรจme brรปlรฉe which was phenomenal! I have celebrated milestones, birthdays and anniversaries at many upscale eateries in this city, and I have to say, J. Carter's hit it out of the park in making us feel special and celebrated. There were fresh flowers and a nice card on the table when we arrived, we were wished well by several staff members. The amazing dessert was also a lovely end to our meal. The prices are high, but you're paying for the experience, and the caliber of food and service. It's worth it.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband surprised me with a reservation to J Carver's
My husband surprised me with a reservation to J Carver's for my birthday on the 2nd. I love the other sister restaurants, but had never eaten here before. We were greeted by Peter at the front and he was so kind and accommodating. We were led to our seat by another woman who took my coat for me. The vibes were already immaculate. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable, and truly a blast to be served by. I cannot seem to remember her name, though. We had a few courses, but we started off with the tuna tartare and that truly set the mood for how the night was going to go. It was flavorful and light. When it finally came time for our entrees, we ordered the pork chop and halibut. Both were incredible, but that pork chop has to have been the best pork chop I've ever had. We finished off with a creme brรปlรฉe, and the night was perfect. 10/10
Be the first to ReplyIt's been a while since I've been to a nice upscale steak
It's been a while since I've been to a nice upscale steak house. After spending 3 years in NYC, I'm a bit spoilt when it comes to a good steakhouse. My colleague from work wanted to grab a good steak and this place came highly recommended by a bunch of folks. Getting a table reservation was tough so we had to make do with sitting at the bar. ++ Starting with the ambiance. This place looked every bit like the fancy NYC steakhouse that I've been used to. The clientele were definitely folks with relatively deepish pockets (not the folks you'd see at a Texas Roadhouse), and people either here on a date, couples or folks from business. ++ I'm still on an alcohol break, so I just had soda and bitters while my colleague had an old fashioned (it was some variant of that). He liked it and has ordered it before ++ We did 2 appetizers. The foie gras and the beef bone marrow. The foie grass was smooth, supple and buttery. It was gone in a quick moment. The bone marrow was probably the best I've ever had. I spread it on the bread and it just melted in my mouth. I'm literally salivating as I'm writing this ++ For the entre we did the Tomahawk steak. It took a while to show up, which in hindsight was a good thing since it gave us some time to let the appetizers digest. We had it medium rare, it was well seasoned , had the right amount of marbeling and was gone within 5 minutes. Overall this is a great place if money is not much of a concern and you want to enjoy a beautiful steak.

Be the first to ReplyThis was one of the best dining experiences I have had!
This was one of the best dining experiences I have had! Charles was for sure the top server I've had since living in Austin. The food was excellent as were the drinks. I totally recommend this place for a celebration or a fun date night.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I visited J Carvers for Valentine's Day,
My husband and I visited J Carvers for Valentine's Day, this was our 4th dining experience here. As always our experience was amazing. From the cocktails, to the appetizers, oysters, steaks and desserts this is hands down our go to steakhouse in Austin, and we have tried them all.
Be the first to ReplyFirst off, we had a reservation for 5pm when they open.
I ordered a Tomahawk ribeye, which is my favorite. We were told that the smallest is usually 35oz. When the server came back, he said the smallest they had left, immediately after opening, was 48oz. Now I obviously planned on taking some home if I wanted even the smallest at 35oz but 48oz?! 4lbs is way over the top for one person. We were then told I could get a 20oz strip. This is way less than 48oz. Not a huge fan of strip but okay. This was shortly followed by, "the smallest steak we have is a 35oz porterhouse." Okay, I'll have the porterhouse. I ordered it medium rare plus. The temp on the steak after 3 tries....with the same piece of meat...was still blue rare and cool to touch. They obviously had difficulty reheating the porterhouse because it comes already sliced off the bone. The manager came over but never offered to fire a new steak. And this is at $4.50 an ounce so that's $157.50 for a steak they can't get right! On a positive note, service, ambiance, appetizers, sides and dessert were all delicious. And the wine list is very good. If I was sure they could get the steak right, this could be our go to place, but at those prices and lack of available steaks at 5pm, I'm not sure we will return.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful service, delicious food, great drinks.
My husband and I came here for the first time for a pre-Valentine's dinner and were blown away. The bone marrow is a must have! Recommend to anyone!
Be the first to ReplyThe pork chops were dry.
The service was sloppy. The sides are overpriced. Not sure why the bone pieces were thrown away when my leftovers were boxed, it's what I was looking forward to the most.
Be the first to ReplyThe service is so attentive and kind.
Yes, actually kind. Very personable and a full understanding of the menu. Had the bone in filet with lobster along with mushroom, spinach, corn brรปlรฉe, and gnocchi. All perfectly done. The bread service is dripping with garlicky butter and addictive. The lobster bisque covered in a puff pastry is among the top three bisques I've had. Finally the vanilla bean cream brรปlรฉe was huge and perfectly braised. I had the gin and juice cocktail (salty gin with carrot and celery) and it was delightfully refreshing. The atmosphere was upscale with many fancy people. We are not fancy people, but it was good people watching. I said that this looked like a place where rich celebrities would eat and was told Joe Rogan eats here. So that's cool. Overall a perfect evening.

We try to dine here every time we are in Austin, and we have never been disappointed. The vibe, the service and the selection of foods and wines are some of the best we have ever enjoyed. But the food is the real reason we visit as often as we can The apps, mains and sides are all unique and outstanding, there is nothing pedestrian about J.'s food even though he describes it as comfort food. It is much more than that.A special Kudos to our server, Geena Davis, who guided us through new selections (we didn't want to have the same things again) and they actually keep track of these things. And her knowledge of their impressive select wine offerings, shows the staff is well-trained.
Be the first to ReplyThis steakhouse is a must-try if you're in Austin! Valet
This steakhouse is a must-try if you're in Austin! Valet parking is available for $12 (and they do accept credit card). If you have a 5pm reservation, just remember that they open at 5pm sharp, so depending on the weather/your parking situation, plan accordingly. The ambiance is dark and moody, with the interior very old-school speakeasy meets diner vibes. I love that you walk thru a set of black out curtains from the outside door and are transported to this "hidden" dining experience. The food and drinks were overall good, but didn't necessarily wow me. I've had better steak and drinks at other steakhouses, but the pricing on everything is very reasonable. My favorite part of the dining experience was being able to choose the steak knife. It adds a personal touch to the meal and added to the fun, unique experience.Service was also good, and I especially liked one of our waiters, who was a comedic genius.I would definitely recommend this steakhouse for a more casual, laid back experience than your typical steakhouse. Also, in case you didn't know, this restaurant is a sister restaurant to Red Ash (in Austin).
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and service.
We ordered bone marrow (first time trying and omg paired with that bread GIVE ME MORE), oysters (east coast and fabulous.. horseradish was holy cow spicy.. a teeny bit goes a long way), filet on the bone (delicious melt in your mouth), crab fried rice (my personal favorite), mashed potatoes (creamy yet had small lumps which we liked), and asparagus (truffle yummo). We were celebrating a birthday so the waiter gave us a dessert on the house. It was ice cream with merengues in between.. it was light and perfect after a pretty big meal. Also fun tip, if you're celebrating a birthday, let them know! We got a hand written birthday card and the entire staff signed it. Definitely adding this to our list of "we will come back".
Be the first to ReplyThe service is exquisite.
J Carver's food, service and ambiance are above bar in every way. J Carver's has become my go to steak and dining restaurant in Austin. I am going to leave the review as such because nothing more needs to be said.
Be the first to ReplyI have not found another steak house in Austin and Houston
I have not found another steak house in Austin and Houston that tops J. Carvers. From the salads, to the appetizers, to the sides, to the steaks, etc. each dish is EXQUISITE!! The steaks are to die for! (Love the bread as well!!) And the service is probably the best I have experienced anywhere else. It's good to know that you can actually get TOP-notch service these days. Not sure who is managing this restaurant, but all I can say is keep it up. Your leadership exceeds expectations.

Impeccable service, fantastic portions, innovative dishes, amazing wine selection, and being the sister restaurant to my fav spot in town (Red Ash), highly addictive fresh garlic bread that will knock your socks off - or I think as the kids say these day, it's bussin'.

This was a fun meal! Not the most amazing filet I've had, but solid. The Italian bread was excellent, as was the baked potato gnocchi. The 50 shades of pink is like candy and yes, I got a second and didn't regret it. We went as a family group and the server was great, fun and patient. We'll definitely go back!
