My new favorite sushi restaurant in SF, but could use some fine-tuning.
Ju-Ni has been on our radar for many months, after earning a Michelin star in 2019 and being mentioned in every list for top sushi spots in the SF Bay Area. All these accolades are well-deserved. I love the concept of only serving 12 guests at a time during each of the two seatings, which is then further divided up into groups of 4 for each itamae. It's right in line with the concept of every top sushi restaurant in Japan.
The sushi is spot-on. There were a total of 14 pieces, preceded by a salad appetizer (I could have eaten a vat of the salad, it was incredible) and wrapping up with a lovely matcha ice cream w/ a chocolate cookie crumble. An option is provided to add additional bites, of which the wagyu beef and uni are recommended to extend the omakase experience. Both bites were excellent. As for the sushi rounds themselves, some had no frills and were prepared "simply" (any seasoned sushi diner knows that "simple" really doesn't apply). There were other bites in which the fish was grilled with a blowtorch right in front of you, and then topped with a bit of caviar, paste or some other garnish. There were some courses that were completely new to me (e.g., barracuda, saury). Their signature salmon roe w/ shaved monkfish liver is definitely out there but so very interesting on the palette. Really fun.
With the food being a slam-dunk, here's what missed the mark:
1. The itamae: while very skilled in his preparation, the conversation was completely disjointed from the intimate ambience that is quintessential of any good sushi restaurant. The second he mentioned eating at Popeye's Chicken, I had zero interest in any interaction. There was no finesse in his conversation, talking about the fish, the prep, none of it. No refinement at all, and that is expected at this price point.
2. The ambience: it felt like an empty warehouse. The walls are completely bare, which is not in line with Japanese design. Minimalistic and bland are not the same thing...some nice paneling on the walls or warmth in the color scheme would really elevate the dining experience. The random prints on the wall actually cheapen the place up.
3. The pricing: maybe I am a snob, but I've become very accustomed to the price/person including everything (gratuity, tax, the whole smash). The $165/person is misleading: for two people, with one glass of wine and 2 extended omakase options (an additional $42/person), with tip and tax: $540. Again, if the owners want to stick to the Japanese style of doing things (who find it insulting that you'd leave a tip) and, quite frankly, the way most high-price restaurants operate these days, make the pricing all-in of some standard gratuity percentage, at a minimum.
The talent is all there, no doubt. There is no way I won't be back for another meal here. But, some fine-tuning will really go a long way.
Omakase
I a great time at Ju-Ni. The monkfish with ikura was the best. Never had frozen shaved monkfish on top of ikura before, so good!
My favorites
Monkfish with ikura
Unagi
Blackthroat seaperch
Oyster
Uni from Hokkaido
Ruined Experience
I was very excited to dine here as I love sushi. I love the omakase experience. Upon arriving we were seated next to a lovely couple. We were asked if we wanted sparkling, still or tab water (I LOVE SF's tab water). Our wonderful chef introduced himself and began our journey. In the middle of our servings, a man approached us and poured one glass of champagne which he said was "compliments of the house". He assumed we worked at another location. When we clarified, he just walked away. Left us with one glass of Champagne. If you made a mistake, acknowledge it. Do not walk away, without a word, leaving one of us with a drink. He never bothered to ask if we wanted Sake (which I did and would have gladly paid for) or any other drinks. To be honest, this ruined my entire experience and made me quite mad. He went to the back where I clearly saw him tell another worker that he gave us a free glass thinking we worked somewhere. Do not treat me like this when I paid and came to this establishment to enjoy a meal. Our other server and chef were very kind. When he returned to fill my water, he spilled some and did not clean it up. I understand that Michelin does not consider customer service but I had a bad experience here. Watching him explain drink options to everyone in house but us also left a very sour taste in my mouth. I'm sorry Ju-ni, I looked forward to being here but if you treat your patrons like this then it will deter anyone from coming back. Everyone that I spoke to regarding this "mistaken identity" found it rather distasteful that he didn't offer to pour another class for the 2nd guest he clearly had mistaken identity with nor did he ever offer us other wine or sake options. On to the next...

Located in a former store - Spartan decor - one chef per four diners - fresh fish from Japan - 14 different pieces of sushi - prepared in front of you - explanation & clarification - very delicious - possibility to have an extension - one Michelin star and deserves it - how to get to two?
Be the first to ReplyVery nice place but way over priced beer, sake and wine
A really nice restaurant with solid one star sushi. The only problem is the wine list with only very, very expensive wines. Sake, about twenty dollars a glass. So, I thought beer would be good but a small Pilsner is 12.00$. Basically you can eat here and enjoy it but the liquor prices are so high you have to take a pass on that.

WOW! OMG! That is not enough to describe what I have to say about my first experience of a meal consisting of nothing but sushi - 14 courses of nigiri sushi (raw fish with rice.) Thanks to my beautiful and loving daughter for this treat!
They are booked up weeks in advance, and as there are only 12 tables (14 at a push) with two seatings, reservations are a must! So, don't think of just showing up and hope to get in. Though the place is small and unassuming, it is fine dining, and you get what you pay for!
A definite must-try!
What better name for this 12-seat restaurant (“ju-ni”means twelve in Japanese). Ju-Ni is a one-star Michelin restaurant in the heart of San Francisco. It offers an omakase-style menu that’s fresh, clean, and superb preparations of sushi. It’s like you were sent to heaven with every piece of sushi, every bite... The staff is friendly and attentive and the chef-owner Geoffrey Lee made as feel welcomed. There are only two seatings and four guests to each sushi chef which make every visit to this restaurant uniquely intimate and personal. So if you’re ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, this place is a must. But be sure to make your reservations early!

If you’re looking for omakase in San Francisco, this place offers an intimate setting paired with a great wine list. They were even kind given that I was 30+ mins late due to crazy SF traffic.

One of the best meals I've ever had. Service, food, experience, preparation. All stellar. One chef for every 4 people. The sommelier was phenomenal. Just A+ all the way around.
