Amazing.
But I just heard the owner retired. So sad but feeling lucky to have experienced it before it closed. Much love to this delicious place.
Be the first to ReplyKaGaYa is definitely one of the best shabu shabu
KaGaYa is definitely one of the best shabu shabu restaurants in Los Angeles, if not "the best".High end meat choices are well complemented by the ever changing set of appetizers, and the service is always up to par. My classic favorite is the prime beef and seafood combo, which comes with vegetables as well, and choice of udon or rice soup at the end of the meal. Ambiance and great music choice at the right level do the rest: definitely worth a trip to the Honda Plaza in Little Tokyo.

The quality of the food was good and service was good, however $660 for 3 ppl for shabu?! That's ridiculous to me lol I've had better shabu for $30/per person. I don't see what was so special about it. If you don't mind spending that much money for mediocre shabu, then this place is for you, but unfortunately I won't be coming back here again. I thank them for the good service though! But definitely not the money. I think it was worth about $300 at most.

Since 26 years ago~ Kagaya have been there for us on every important holidays~ we are like family~Thank you for all the wonderful memories and yummy food~
Be the first to ReplyI went to this restaurant to celebrate a birthday.
This restaurant is kind of hidden so you'll really have to walk around to find it. Overall the food was good and the employees was really nice. Customer service was top tier, it felt like they really wanted to take great care of you at the restaurant. I would say the food is a little bit on the pricey side, is it worth it? I guess, because the seafood we got was very fresh. Would I come again? Probably not, this meal was kind of a once in a while experience so I definitely wouldn't spend that much money on an expensive Shabu Shabu again.
Be the first to ReplyHigh quality shabu shabu in LA.
I heard the owner is quitting after 26 years so i decided to try this place before he leaves. Ordered live king crab seafood and wagyu beef dinner set. Everything tasted great and fresh. 5 stars
Be the first to ReplySo sad to see this Gem place closing.
My favorite Shabu Shabu in LA:( The whole experience is phenomenal. Please try all their desserts too if you can!
Be the first to ReplyWe've been coming to Kagaya for more than 20 years now,
We've been coming to Kagaya for more than 20 years now, back when the beef option was still $45. It is still our favorite shabu shabu restaurant in all of California. Chef Masa makes an omakasa starter, soup and appetizer that is different on every visit. There has only been one time that we had the same appetizer twice. The Beef and Seafood Shabu Shabu option are still our favorites. The food quality and service here will always be top notch. Their apple pie dessert with their self made caramel sauce is to die for but no worries during the summer months, there is the banana pie or lychee sorbet that is still yummy yummy and uses the caramel sauce too. Remember to always make a reservation!

But please note they have a bigger price tag than most, so you will either leave the restaurant somewhat hungry, or with a large bill.It is located in the same plaza as Sushi Gen, so parking is always a pain in this plaza. You might get lucky and find street parking, or an actual parking if you arrive before the crowd. Since this is a small restaurant, reservations is highly recommended. Service is great here, but with 3 waitress serving us and removing empty dishes from our table, I felt a little "rushed" during my visit.Meat is top rated here. Ordered the following items during my visit:- Duck Breast Appetizer- Raw Oysters- Mixed Shabu Shabu with Beef and Seafood ($90) - Full order of Wagyu Beef ($142)My friend is a regular at this restaurant, and got an order of Wagyu Sashimi as an appetizer. Not sure if this item is available to everyone, but basically it is paper thin slices of raw Wagyu Beef that you eat by itself. OMG. They literally melt in my mouth. Highly recommended if you see it on the menu or if they are willing to serve it to you.The best part of the meal is they offer you porridge or udon after you are done with the meat. I opted for the Porridge and licked every last bite off my bowl!Overall, a great dining experience here. Could've eaten more, but didn't want to spend my paycheck on one meal. I envy those that can come here regularly for dinner. Bookmarked and will definitely be revisiting again in the near future.
Be the first to ReplyFancy shabu shabu place, probably the nicest one you can
Fancy shabu shabu place, probably the nicest one you can find if you want shabu shabu and want to feel a little more upscale. You choose the type of protein you want (beef, beef/seafood mixes, wagyu) and then it's brought out like a course meal. A few appetizer dishes that were pretty good, then the beef which we ordered and a plate of vegetables. Even the regular beef was good, the portions are pretty large (but should be for the prices). Everyone shares one pot of water at the center of the table. After finishing, they will make you some rice or udon dish, we opted for udon which was good as well. Finally there are a few choices of desserts, strawberry sorbet, vanilla ice cream/apple crisp, green tea mousse, creme brûlée, everything was pretty good once again. Overall a good filling meal, great customer service, were accommodating even with little kids. Not sure I would ever pay for the wagyu, but a nice place to come for shabu shabu if you're looking to impress.

Warning - you will probably leave this place stuffed to the max! I got to try the Mix Shabu Shabu "B" with premium wagyu beef and seafood. We started with the most delicious wagyu sushi appetizer I've ever had. One bite of pure heaven, the wagyu just melts in your mouth! Next was a steamed fish in clear broth. The fish was nice and flaky but the broth was a bit on the bland side. Next was a chawanmushi, which was smooth and simple and tasty, with shrimp inside. The seafood that comes with the Shabu is so fresh! I ate the oyster raw and it was large and fresh. The crab was so sweet it was just as good cooked or not. The clams were also very fresh and a good size. But the highlight was the wagyu! So very tender, it only takes about 5 seconds in the boiling water to cook. The sesame and ponzu dipping sauces are excellent, I loved them both. After the main event, they take the broth and make either an udon soup (so good and the noodles are delightfully chewy - dip them in the sesame sauce!) or a rice porridge (like a warm hug! With lots of fresh ginger). Both are outstanding. At this point you're unbuttoning your jeans under the table, but then they give you a long list of desserts to choose from! Apple pie, banana pie, matcha mousse, creme brûlée and a strawberry ice cream. I got the apple pie, which comes deconstructed - a beautiful, caramel-y syrup in a pool under sweet-tart cooked apples and crisp, flaky fillo with vanilla ice cream. So very good, it's light yet hits all the right notes of apple pie. Time to roll myself home - until next time, KaGaYa!
Be the first to ReplyFrom service to food quality, this place is solid.
I actually appreciate the fact that the ambiance isn't one of those overly upscale places for the quality of the food you get. It's casual in terms of dress code and set-up, yet the food itself is really fantastic. Sometimes you just want to roll up to some place without needing to dress for the occasion while still getting good quality food! Side note I did wish they refilled waters a little more often but they kept up with things and cleaning out the dishes very well after each round.Food:Starting with the seasonal appetizer, it was off the bat excellent quality. I believe we had the red snapper nigiri, which was lightly seared and the sauce they had with this was a good way to get your appetite going. Mackerel soup: Wow, I never knew mackerel could be this good. It was extremely tender and the soup had this umami flavor that really warms you up on a cold night. Chuwanmushi: perfect balance and comes out piping hot. There were some shrimps in this too.As for the combo B we got, the wagyu was super tender, melt in your mouth perfect, but the portions definitely are on the smaller side. The seafood was fresh overall doesn't lend itself well for sharing, with one oyster, 2 crab legs and a claw, plus 3 clams. I wasn't really a fan of how sandy the clams were, but the crab and oyster was perfect even after lightly dipping into the broth. We ordered an extra plate of the wagyu to help with portions but this is the one downside where while I get we're paying for quality, it's a definitely not the most filling meal I've had either. Thankfully it comes with udon afterwards, otherwise I definitely would've left hungry. Side note, the sauces are probably some of the best I've had for shabu-shabu. The sesame sauce and ponzu are delicious and a great complement for anything you dip in it!Desserts: you get a lot of options to pick from. Given the hard hitting flavors we had earlier, we opted for the strawberry sorbet, which was excellent in terms of being refreshing, a little tarty, yet still sweet. Top it off with a hot cup of tea to end the meal.Parking: paid parking for this area, but not terrible to get in and out of. If the lot is full, which it easily can be given all the shared businesses, try the lot across the street at the Office Depot ($10 flat rate valet, but I guess during the pandemic, you can just park yourself which is nice).

Had a wonderful experience here with a friend I haven't seen in a while. We sat at the bar and had a good view of the delicious food coming our way. I'm addition, sitting at the bar - the chef came to our pot to cook the udon noodles. Seating at the booths - the chef takes your pot to cook the noodles in the kitchen. Dinning: All the items on the menus are meal sets which comes with a seasonal appetizers, shabu shabu with meat and/or seafood, udon or rice soup, and a dessert. If you share a meal set, there is an additional charge so your friend can also get a set of seasonal appetizer and dessert. All the dishes were flavorful and the Wagyu was melt in your mouth good. Out of the desserts, I enjoyed the creme brûlée more than the matcha mousse. Instead of using a blow torch, they used an iron to sear the sugar. Parking: they have a small plaza parking in front of the store. However, to get in, you need to pay for parking at the booth. It is $6, cash only. Special mention: they have some of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible shabu restaurant.
I highly recommend this place, and love the food and ambiance. We ordered the seafood combination.

One of the best Japanese shabu in LA! Their meat and king crab are both must haves! Everything is always super fresh. Their sauces are so simple but are excellent! You also get a choice of porridge or udon once you are finished with the meat. My favorite part is their homemade apple crumble at the end. Everything is delicious and healthy. I can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyBrought my husband here on a Tuesday evening and overall
Brought my husband here on a Tuesday evening and overall the experience was just OK. For $100 pp, this isn't what I expected. I don't suggest coming here for a romantic (or quiet) ambience--it likens more to a casual Shin Sen Gumi or izakaya atmosphere. If weeknights are this noisy, I can't imagine what it's like during the weekend. The photos are somewhat misleading because it gives the impression that it's more elegant or polished than it actually is.The food comes out in courses-- all of which were seafood-based except for the meat. The soup and *even all the dipping sauces* contain fish and cannot be altered, so just a heads-up in case you're allergic to seafood or don't eat fish! The quality of the meat was good, but because I was only provided soy sauce as a dipping option, it was bland. Marbling was OK. I normally LOVE premium shabu shabu but the execution here did not impress me. Servers were professional and nice.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot! It opens at 5pmMake reservations beforehand.
It gets pretty busy. Great service! Great meal! As a newbie, it's kind of difficult in what to order and how to eat .... and since all the workers are Japanese it might be difficult to ask for help.

Randomly walked in without a reservation because Sushi Gen next door had a crazy wait on a Saturday at 5pm. So glad we did! My friend and I ordered one seafood course and one beef course to share. Everything was excellent, starting from the appetizers they served (they served two fish dishes that were amazing), to the shabu shabu itself, to the noodles and then dessert (creme brulee yummm)I also loved the relaxed, clean, minimalist feel to the restaurant -- definitely would want to come back here.
