DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
This is not a Michelin star restaurant. The food was an absolute inedible disaster. Oyster was warm, scallop was smelly, steak was raw, and flavors were overall off…. Bread was inedible. Stay away.
Be the first to ReplyKali, Not a Michelin star experience
Disappointed. Kali does not deserve a Michelin star. It is a pretty good restaurant but it was inconsistent. Our server was not particularly friendly; he was very serious and did not make the experience a fun night out. We began with the oysters, which were delicious and beautifully presented. We also ordered the yellowtail crudo which was good but not outstanding. The apple was a nice flavor pairing with the fish but the pieces of crudo were small. And we also ordered the beef tartare cigars and they were good and once again beautifully presented but not particularly flavorful. One of our guests wanted an espresso martini but they did not make it so he ordered a Black Russian which was a watered down glass of coffee w ice and no alcohol. We returned it. The sommelier was pleasant and did his job nicely suggesting a Sancerre that was in our price range. 2 guests ordered the black cod…when they arrived, one looked vastly different than the other in both size and appearance; one had kale which looked nice and shiny and the other one’s kale looked steamed dull and wilted. The sea urchin pasta was good but slightly dry. The duck was ordered medium rare and was served rare/raw and needed to get sent back to the kitchen. Instead of sending a new plate out, the kitchen chopped it up to cook it longer and returned it to the table all hacked up. A Michelin star restaurant should not ever send a plate back looking like it did. The restaurant looks tired and our waiter did his job but did not smile nor seemed to enjoy serving his customers. We had one night in town for a special meal and it was not the meal I expected. There are many other Michelin star restaurants I could hv chosen for a special night out with family and friends. I was disappointed as were our foodie guests. Appetizers were beautifully presented but the rest of the meal was lackluster.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, not-so-good everything else
Food: Very Good/Excellent Ambiance: Sterile, No Charm Service: Friendly, But Unconscious Etc: Extra $2 charge for two olives. Really! On balance: Too many shortfalls to merit a second visit.
Be the first to ReplyFar from Michelin Star quality
We had a couple of days in LA, and wanted to test one of the areas Michelin Star restaurants. After careful consideration we chose Kali, mostly because of the local vibe of the place. When the day of the appointment came, we were really looking forward to having a feast. We therefore ordered the tasting menu, as well as the wine-pairing. When the first dish came we were all excited, but unfortunately it didn’t last long. From start to finish, with very few exceptions, the dishes were blend, and boring. Don’t get me wrong, it all tasted ok, but far from what you would expect from a Michelin Star restaurant. Besides from the food, the service was also just average. Our waiter was polite and attentive, until two girls in the bar were more interesting. I really don’t blame him for trying to hook up with girls instead of waitering on us, but again it is far from Michelin Star quality. I am sorry to say that if you want to eat at Kali whilst it has a a star, you have to hurry. I doubt the restaurant will survive the next review from the inspectors if something serious is not done.
Be the first to Reply2/3 dishes were excellent. 5% add-on for the kitchen appreciation is insulting.
I REALLY dislike restaurants that add extra charges such as KALI does. Given the prices they charge for each plate and drink, I expect them to pay a fair wage to all their workers and price everything correctly. If they want to pool tips that's fine, but don't force me to determine whether I should reduce my server's tip by 5% because you added a kitchen tip on the bill, but not a service charge. Europe has this figured out far better - just price the service and include it. That said / rant over, there were some hits and misses here. You can do a tasting menu or order a la carte. We opted to do a la carte and share plates amongst the 4 of us. The risotto and duck dishes were great, the cod dish was not (too salty, too fishy). Many of the appetizers were not of the standard a Michelin starred restaurant should offer - the salads, oysters, and bread were all good quality fare, but nothing unique. One positive is a good wine list with a broad selection of affordable wines, as well as top shelf options. Valet parking is $12. Location is meh. Interior space is nordic chic with uninspired art and a splattering of good and not good places to be seated. Overall worthy of 4/5 on TA, but if comparing to other 1-star spots a 2/5.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Chef Menu
My cousins and I have a lovely Chef Menu experience in this LA restaurant in October. The meal was excellent from beginning to end and the staffs cannot be more helpful. Chef even spent some times chatting with my cousin. However you need a big appetite if you want to experience the full Chef menu. The black truffle risotto is lovely and the Chef is generous with the truffle. The crowded beach starter was the star of the dinner and I love the great selection of fresh seafood. I can't wait to come back again.
Be the first to ReplyGood portions, taste and service
An interesting michelin restaurant. Non descript entrance, casual vibe. There is a choice between set menu and a la carte and we had the latter. For starters, we had the oysters, fish crudo, very good. For mains, the uni pasta, duck, sirloin, also very good. The sirloin is a touch chewy. Portions are sizeable, compared to Maude last night Very good service as well
Be the first to ReplyShocking 5% “kitchen staff surcharge” automatically added to the bill
Let’s start with the shocking “5% kitchen appreciation fee” that’s automatically added to the bill. I have never ever seen such a thing and it’s ridiculous. I expect the restaurant to pay a living wage to the kitchen staff - especially given the prices it charges - and not add some form of a crazy surcharge to the bill. What’s next? A 2% dishwasher appreciation surcharge? A 4% appreciation surcharge for the delivery person that delivers fish and meat to the restaurant every day? Maybe a 10% owner appreciation surcharge?
Food - 3/5. Seasonal tasting menu was OK. Good fish. Chewy steak. “Crowded beach” seemed to have been prepared much earlier and stored in the fridge - not so good.
Decor -1/5. The place looks like a pizza joint with a fresh coast of paint. Zero atmosphere. Absolutely zero.
Overall, booked it because of the Michelin star, but having been to restaurants with over 100 stars in total I can confidently say that if Kali were in NY, SF, London or Paris, it would be nowhere close to a Michelin star.
2 stars coming ...
talking about value for money! Really, this place defintely merits its Michelin star. Cosy, stylish yet down to earth outdoor patio, but all that does not matter, it is all about the the food... and the wine choiche... and the beer choiche ( I am Belgian after all). Does it get any better in LA? ... Let me know pls,
Be the first to ReplyQuick Dinner - Delectable Dessert
I came here for a quick dinner before catching a show nearby at the Fountain Theater. I let them know that I was in a bit of a rush, and they prepared everything I ordered in about an hour.
I don't exactly remember everything I had (not a bad sign - I'm writing this review four months after dining here), but I do remember that there was some sort of an ice cream dessert with candied egg yolk that was extremely delicious. It's been four months, and the memory of that dish still sticks in my head! I'd recommend everybody to come here, just to eat that alone.
Excellent lunch at Kali
When Eater LA recently published a list of the Michelin-starred restaurants in LA, we noticed Kali, which we'd never encountered. We were planning a lunch with a friend, so we suggested Kali. The lunch was superb. Two of us started off with the charred avocado (on greens) and one with the Kabocha Squash soup. Two of us had the parsnip Agnolotti and one had the sea urchin pasta. We ordered the coconut panna cotta, and were treated by the addition of the meringue gelato. All was absolutely delicious. Among us we had several of their special cocktails and glasses of chardonnay and Chablis.. It is obvious, if you compare the on-line menu with what we had today, that Kali changes things to fit what is available and fresh. A superb meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat quality food, but minuscule portion sizes left us hungry
We were impressed with the quality of the food at Kali. All of our courses (we went à la carte, three courses each) were excellent. The service was pleasant also. We hadn’t known the place had a Michelin star when booking. The big downside (and why we can’t give a five star rating) was that the portion sizes were very small, so we left still hungry and with the couple of drinks we each had having gone straight to our heads! We would have loved some sourdough bread to mop up our plates, or a cheese course between the main and dessert to fill it out a little... European Michelin star restaurants would usually cater for that.
Be the first to ReplyMemorable meal, even more memorable service
From the minute we walked in the door to the moment we left, we received perfect service. We sat at the chef's counter so we interacted with our server, somm, sous, and chef. Everyone was fantastic—attentive, thoughtful, and made great recommendations. We had a wonderful conversation with Chef Kevin and an equally wonderful meal. The food was creative but never pretentious. It was all about making the most of incredible ingredients and highlighted the best of California cuisine. Particularly loved the winter market salad and the cherimoya ice cream. We'll definitely go back and will be telling all of our friends not to miss Kali. Thank you!

We were here for a wine tasting event that included dinner. It was fantastic with both the service and the food. The servers are friendly unlike many trendy places. Will definitely return for more.
Be the first to ReplyTwo visits and a very happy Thanksgiving!
It was my first visit to the West Coast and I had made a booking at Kali a few weeks before my arrival having been very impressed by the menu. The dining experience from arrival is beautifully relaxed and you receive a fantastic welcome with the staff very attentive. I opted for the Chef’s Taster Menu with wine pairing and didn’t regret my decision.
Beautiful Bellini canapés to start with a welcome glass of sparkling wine followed by beautiful Bay Oysters with a passion fruit ball giving a citrus hint to the subtlety of the Oysters.
The Yellow Tail Crudo is superb. Creamy buttermilk combination of citrus and the sharpness of the the radish garnish complimenting the bite of the Yellowtail. Beautiful.
The wine pairings were superb all night. The staff have gone to great care to ensure the very best combinations where citrus or vanilla or cream may be the prevailing hit on the palette. But I will envy Californians forever for the fact that they have Three Sticks right on their doorsteps. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful rounded and soft Chardonnays on the market. The Chateau Haute-Serre Malbec from Georges Vigoroux’s stunning vineyards was a perfect compliment to the beautifully presented meat course with steamed leeks and carrot with a red wine jus which would rival the best in the world.
The White Chocolate Meringue Ice Cream with a grated fomented salted Egg Yolk garnish was a beautiful light finale to a stunning evening dinner. A unique and outstanding experience. Accompanied with a glass of Madeira, all I could taste for the rest of the evening was the sensation that my mouth had been preserved in pure vanilla extract.
I returned for the thanksgiving menu the day before leaving LA for London and what a beautiful way to spend Thanksgiving Day! A stunning pumpkin and Parmesan Risotto served with steamed blanched Brussels leaves garnished with pumpkin seeds and Nasturtium was one of the most beautiful dishes I have ever experienced.
The meat course of beautifully served Turkey and Pork was served with a corn bred and cream which melted in the mouth. Served with creamed potato and gravy which was neither greasy nor heavy in any way.
The Pumpkin Pie to finish was as light as you could wish with the bite of wholemeal in the pastry.
The Michelin need to re-examine their priorities if Kali is not upgraded significantly. But regardless of their decision making: Eric Ripert is beautifully covering the East Coast at Le Bernardin and Kevin Meehan at Kali is beautiful covering the West.
Given the opportunity I would return again and again! Thank you!
Canceled for no good reason!!!!
Would love to discuss the food but they just canceled our reservation (which we made months ago) because they “had a buyout”. Total and complete disrespect for their customers, save your money and go elsewhere because they just don’t care ...
