Kin Khao San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Came in at around 12:45pm on Thursday.
Some tables were available but decided to sit at the bar top. The restaurant is located at the corner of Mason and Ellis, inside the Parc 55 hotel building. You have to go inside the building to get access to this restaurant. Greeted by the host who asked for my number to "check in" but I didn't have reservations so thought that was weird. Anyways, ordered the Khao soi with chicken (other option was tofu). Came out pretty fast. First off, the broth was rich and full of flavor. I tasted lots of lemon grass which I liked. Chicken was tender but not abundant to say the least. Same goes for the actual noodles. Tons of the crunchy noodle topping which I thought was over the top. Noodles were also al dente, which was fine for me but usually with these type of dishes, I'm use to a more cooked taste. It was on the spicy side so I'd skip this if you can't handle heat. Overall flavor was good but for $25, wish I could've had some more chicken and noodles.
We had the tasting menu which was fantastic and incredible
We had the tasting menu which was fantastic and incredible value for the amount of food. Each dish was unique with great mix of flavors and textures. Service was excellent. The restaurant was busy and loud but in a way that also wasn't distracting. I would happily return or recommend to anyone!
Came here for a large work lunch and enjoyed our meals very
Came here for a large work lunch and enjoyed our meals very much. We shared several apps including the wings and the Brussel sprouts. I didn't love my entree and I wouldn't say our Waitress was much help in offering suggestions. But it's a great place to go with a date or in a group - it's a nice place to have a wonderful meal.
Extremely good Thai food.
Unique flavors paired with excellent service make for a fantastic dining experience. Spice levels on a few of the dishes were too high for a few members of my party so take their spice levels seriously. The interior is well decorated although the music was a bit loud. Cocktails were also very well balanced. This is a great deal for a Michelin star restaurant. It's not cheap, but compared to many of its fixed course competitors it is a solid bargain. Although the service is not as meticulous as many other one-starred eateries the quality of food and flavors are first class.
I decided to give Kin Khao another try after 5 years.
We were seated right away with a lunchtime reservation and had prompt and quick service. We ordered the mushroom hor mok, five spice duck noodle soup, and I wanted to give the khao soi another chance. The mushroom hor mok was decent, but I wouldn't get it again- chopped mushrooms in a spicy curry sauce that you spread on rice crackers...a bit awkward to eat from how the cracker breaks apart and nothing mind blowing flavor-wise. The khao soi was still disappointing. The flavor didn't have enough depth and the crispy noodles were awkward to eat, although I did enjoy the texture of the chewy noodles. Lastly, the five spice duck noodle soup was the star of the show. Hand-pulled noodles in a delicious broth- make sure to add all of the spicy vinaigrette in. I did wish the duck was juicier and there were more noodles. Overall, I wouldn't be excited to come back- but if I did, I would definitely order the duck soup again.
Was excited to try Kin Khao however I feel a bit let down
Was excited to try Kin Khao however I feel a bit let down by the food here. I thought that flavors were a bit too similar, and most dishes were slightly too sour. The only dish I liked was the appetizer that came with a crispy rice. For a one michelin star restaurant, I expected more.
One of the best Thai restaurants I've been too! Black rice
One of the best Thai restaurants I've been too! Black rice pudding was delicious. Food was good and reasonably priced. Khao Kan Jin was flavorful!
I went for lunch, and overall, the food was good but may
I went for lunch, and overall, the food was good but may not be worth the price. Here are some of my thoughts. First, the service was excellent, which you should expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant. I loved how they provided hot towels to clean your hands if you ordered the Pretty Hot Wings. For the food, the Papaya salad was a delicious vegetarian dish, the one dish I enjoyed the most. The hot wings were different than other Asian-style hot wings; they were not too sweet and very spicy. The chicken sandwich was bland and dry, probably the dish I was most disappointed with. With so many restaurants offering a variation of chicken sandwiches, this chicken sandwich was one of the worst I've tried. The dinner menu may be better, but I don't know if I will go back again.
The ambience of the restaurant was really nice.
The servers were very respectful to individuals in our party, in terms of their food allergies, and instrumental with their cooks, in instruction of not taking away from the food tasting experience, due to our family members' food allergies. The food was good, but it was not what I expected from a Michelin restaurant. I guess I was expecting amazing. Like mouthwatering -- OMG! I need to set up my residence next this restaurant -- type of reaction. It was good.
Appetizers were mind blowing Very good food and ambience.
Food was flavorful and mild
Great staff and service and food with unique Thai flavours
Stopped in for an early dinner without a reservation at 5:30PM, and secured a spot at the bar (perfect). Had a wonderful experience and great service from the two gents manning the bar, they really took care of me and made sure I had a lovely time. Highlights were the pork belly (best ever level) and squid (which is not as spicy as some claim it to be). Although I got in without a reservation, I would recommend making one since this is a popular booking in the city.
Great food, ok service and good price
Food tastes great. I like crispy rice cake in hor mok and stir fried bok choy a lot. Service is just so so due to lack of staffing. Price is preety reasonable given location and Michelin star.
For SF 1 Star Michelin, this ain’t it
Strange location for a Michelin star restaurant (inside a whatever SF hotel, not some hot spot or fancy hotel). No bathroom except for hotel lobby where you have to be given a key by the restaurant. When you’re in SF where a lot of food is really good, there comes a bit of expectation when there’s a Michelin star attached, and this just left our group with a “really?” feeling. Service was fine but a few dishes and drinks were missed, and had to be reminded. We had to ask for another bottle of water, when you’d think they’d notice everyone’s glass is empty. Food was good but some dishes better than others. (Beef cheeks and rabbit super yummy). Price was really high for what it was. Happy to have tried it but won’t be back. Either give me a bomb hole in the wall or give me excellent high end service, but don’t give me a weird hotel basic restaurant and charge me Michelin prices.
NOT A MICHELIN STAR..........STOP THE LIE!
Sucha huge disappointment in both service and food quality. My dish and beer was served 15 minutes AFTER my wife's sandwich. Then the quality of the food was marginal at best. The service was abdominal as once the mistake of the incorrect dish was discovered the waitress hid in the corner of the kitchen and we didn't see here again until she was certain we were finished..........ZERO CLASS.........there is simply NO WAY THIS IS A MICHELIN STAR.............STOP THE LIE!
Tum yum yum yum!
Good service and incredible food make this place a must. The massaman beef cheeks and the pork belly were a complete standout. Just do it.
Decent food but way overpriced
Went with friends and were drawn by the Michelin star. Service was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. Wine list was decent. Cocktails o.k. The food is served family style. Food was not what I was used to in Thailand. More like a Thai inspired fusion cuisine. While the food was o.k. it is way overpriced for what it is. Desert choices are limited and while the panna cotta was good and refreshing, not really Thai. Will not go back. For the price you can find better Thai food.
Best Thai I have ever had
Best Thai I have ever had. The set menu is so good value for money. Enjoyed every single bite. Super spicy, but hey, it’s Thai, it should be.
Excellent Food in a very active restaurant with excellent service
We went there after seeing all the positive reviews. It is a very nice place with very attentative and active server that really put in a lot of effort so your stay is perfect. Food was excellent and they like to put every dish in the middle to share, which is really nice way to share and explore new food. Only if you want a quiet place. You might have to find another restaurant. But it felt right :-)
What a delight!
A delight to the senses. Last minute reservation came in for the bar— and we took it. Brothers Brian and Garrett created a menu just for us. And it was perfect. OMG I’d go back for the mushroom hor mok. Then we had the Yum Polamai, pork belly, squid, and numerous drinks—- cocktails were delish and the wine list extensive and sophisticated. We were so full but the people next to us had the noodles and so we did a swap. Noodles were good but our things were way better. One of my best meals ever.
Great flavors!
Delicious flavors. Unpretentious great food. Best to order several dishes to share. Only problem is they served too fast. Will return soon.
