🤢 2/5 - Disappointing

Quite a let down over dinner
With kaiseki, you would expect the food, atmosphere and service to be at least good if not exceptional. Ki-sho did not meet the mark on all 3 fronts.
1. Food was ok but for a restaurant of this standard, it was average at best. Flavours were straightforward and overly reliant on ingredients like truffle (Australian?) instead of freshness and cooking effort. Little evidence of skill and technique to coax flavours out of the food. Sushi was nice though, good rice and fantastic vinegar balance that most people overlook, but it’s not a sushi restaurant is it?
2. Atmosphere was outer Siberian. We were offered the private room. Walls were plain and extra tables and chairs were unceremoniously pushed to both sides in a windowless room so it felt like the spare meeting room in your office that nobody ever wants to use it. Might had been better at the bar counter but unless you like eating alone, in a windowless atmosphere-less room, don’t take the private room.
3. Service was friendly but not knowledgeable nor polished. This was probably the biggest disappointment. Compared to the top end Japanese restaurants here and in Japan where you feel very well looked after from start to end, this was really poor. Once the lovely doorman let us into the restaurant, it felt neither pampering nor professionally executed as would have expected. As mentioned, staff are friendly. But starting from the mumbling manner in which dishes are presented to the fact that we had to walk over to get our sake and pour it ourselves a number of times, I think the service training needs improvement.
Will not be back unless things change.
