The egg salad was a bit too onion-y and savory for my taste.
A good attempt at a konbini egg sandwich, but it's not it.

We scheduled a reservation for New Year's Day weeks in advance so we'd have a fun morning brunch spot to kick off 2023. We had to pay $90 to reserve the experience. Then, Konbi Ni unexpectedly cancelled on us via email due to "unforseen circumstances" the night before - and obviously, by then you couldn't get in anywhere in LA for a group. Not a great service experience.

best egg sandwich i've EVER had and i'm not even typically an egg person. believe the hype! the bread they use is so soft and fluffy and their sandwich fillings are PACKED with flavor. get the hojicha latte too if you want something nutty and creamy to wash your lunch down with.
Be the first to ReplyI loved the egg salad.
Fantastic sandwich. Soft, soft bread and the egg salad had a nice horseradish bite . I liked the potato salad... lots of crunch and texture and a good vinegar bite. I didn't love the eggplant Katsu. It was a little too sweet for me. Service was relatively quick and I appreciated that the service tip was included to support the whole staff.

Be the first to ReplyNothing special, and wildly overpriced.
Add on top a mandatory 20% gratuity, which is not advertised, and this place is a hard pass. Save your money, there are plenty of other places more deserving with better food and better practices.

Had my first Japanese breakfast at Konbi on Sunset in the Echo Park neighborhood. How fortunate I feel that this restaurant was my first experience of that breakfast. Such attention to detail, and such fresh ingredients! It was delightful! Every item was elevated! From the first cup of Sencha tea through the barley- miso broth, the light and delicious layered omelette and grilled steelhead with such crispy skin -- all the way theough to the Chantilly cream filled dessert, alongside two different fresh persimmon chunks. That dessert, so light, so delicious! A meal so nourishing, so beautiful,, and (inspite of the lightness of it all) so filling. Even the music in the restaur;t, the Oscar Peterson Trio) was at the perfect level. A great way to start a day! Now, I am home in San Diego, dreaming of such a Japanese breakfast. Perhaps another trip to LA is in store... how many restaurants could be so stellar?

BEST EGG SALAD SANDWICH OF MY LIFE! Came here with my cousin after a hike and wow was I blown away. I wish they had a place in the valley, but for sure worth the drive down. Not much for seating but worth the hype! I could honestly eat two of the egg sandwiches in one seating. I took one home to my husband and he loved it. Highly recommend.

They need to update their hours, or at least have them listed on the exterior of the building. I have tried to support this business, but their hours do not accurately reflect when they are open. I have gone twice now, and the gate has been down and they are closed.

While I appreciate the neat presentation and soft bread making this a true "sando", I can't get behind the taste. There was too much dijon mustard in the egg salad sandwich and potato salad; it was so overpowering that I thought they used horseradish. The pork katsu was too salty. I think the best sandwich was the eggplant. We also ordered this experimental bean curd dish, and it was very bad. The ropes of unsalted bean curd cut like flat noodles were topped with mandarin oranges and an oddly sweet, viscous sauce.

Went specifically to try the Pork Katsu Sando, so ordered one Pork and one Eggplant Katsu sando. When I got home, discovered that inside the Pork Katsu box was an Eggplant Katsu. Had to make a return trip to correct the error and be able to try the Pork Katsu. The sandwiches were good and the chocolate croissant was excellent, but the error is a big customer satisfaction fail. Scares me to think what kind of mistakes that carelessness or lack of customer focus can produce.Don't think I will be going back because of high price and error.Highlights were chocolate croissant and Shepard Fairey painting in side of building.

Unclear why folks are leaving such medium reviews, but my review is based on an order of the egg sando and potato salad, both of which were fresh, soft, and oh so flavorful. Maybe others are getting meat sandos or something but the egg one was absolute bliss.Cute little window with a few bistro seats to enjoy the sandwich in the sunlight.

I didn't know what to expect as I came here with my boyfriend's suggestion since he knew how much I love Tonkatsu and Katsu Sando as I am Japanese. He researched online and found this spot located in Echo Park. Since it is still considered the pandemic, the inside seatings were not open to the public. It is a small narrow restaurant so I guess that must've been the reason. We ordered at the window and waited by the outdoor seatings that were just outside the storefront. The food came in takeout boxes and plastic reusables. We both ordered Pork Katsu Sandwich and had the Marinated Hodo Yuba to share. The Pork Katsu Sandwich had a nice crispy sound to it as I bit into the sandwich. The meat itself also was not too soft or chewy. Just a perfectly balanced tenderness that sometimes you don't expect from a pork cutlet. What I did notice is that they pulled back on the tonkatsu sauce quite a bit. Normally, for a typical Pork Katsu Sandwich at any restaurant, they will be glazed well with a tasteful sauce that makes the experience complete. I loved artisanal quality of the sandwich as it focused less on the sauce and more on the sandwich and pork katsu quality, but at the same time there was something to be desired especially in a country where we dip sauces in just about everything. It might work in Japan, but may not appreciated here as much due to the differing taste palates. The Marinated Hodo Yuba was interesting as I had nothing like it before. The texture was quite unique. The flavoring was what I expect in Japanese with a sesame mix flavor. I enjoyed the meal, but it was small for what seemed like a decent price. I would love to try other things on the menu next time such as the egg sandwich as those are typically tasty as well. Leaving my review as four out of five, but subject to change with future visits.

So...I work with folks who put me on to this little, tiny hole in the wall spot. At first I was like....no Katsu for me. I'm having an egg aversion so it was a big no. So I can't speak on the sandwiches because they didn't speak to me. But let's talk breakfast...I ordered a snap pea salad and a chocolate croissant. I was like....am I really about to eat a snap pea salad for breakfast? Yup. And then the very next day, I drove eight miles to get the sane damn thing. And then the next week I tried the yuba salad. And then I drove eight miles two days in a row to have the same thing. I drove past all kinds of delicious breakfast spots to go get a chocolate croissant and mushroom/cabbage concoction from a little Japanese spot that specializes in egg salad sandwiches. What universe am I in? Good is good. Great is great. And worth traveling for. Tears welled up when they were sold out of the chocolate croissant. Tears. I tried a different croissant but it had too much going on...pistachio, chocolate and orange...if they'd just do away with the orange part. Anyways, no more settling. I drive eight miles for my perfect little breakfast, then eight miles back to get my coffee. Yup...I'm about this food life. Sometimes I'll get the Hojicha Latte but it doesn't quite hit the spot. I hear they are opening one in Culver City. Closer....more salad for breakfast for me!!! Salad and baked treat...balance.

TL: DR - Yummy Japanese sandwiches erring more on the Japanese taste palette (vs. American, like Katsu Sando nearby). Small, but interesting coffees and teas. Flaky, buttery croissants.Small little shop in Echo Park. A few tables outside, they are not doing dine in right now.Egg salad sandwich - light delicate bread with a creamy flavorful egg salad and flaky salt incorporated for texture and pops of salt. The medium boiled egg was a great touch.Pork katsu sandwich - sweet and tangy katsu sauce on the breads. The lightly fried pork cutlet was juicy and tender. The slaw was sweet and tangy too. This sandwich seems more on the Japanese side in terms of taste and size, compared to Katsu Sandos interpretation with a larger cutlet and fatter breads. The croissants here and fresh and buttery. The coffees are small but delicate. Interesting flavors available. Worth a try.
Be the first to ReplyDo yourself a favor and get the egg salad sando.
I've gotten all my friends to fall in love with it lol. It reminds me of the sandos I had when I was in Japan.
Be the first to ReplyPricy sando.
Egg salad good. Crab and katsu. Okay. Take out only. Small place in bad neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyFinally had a chance to try Konbi yesterday.
My friends and I ordered the following sandwiches:1) Jonah Crab Omelette - Nori, Mayo, Dijon $17My favorite by far! Sooo good.2) Eggplant Katsu - Burnt Onion Dashi, Cabbage, Bulldog Sauce (vegetarian) $12This is really good too, but it's ranks second cause the Jonah is just too delicious 3) Pork Katsu - Cabbage, Bulldog Sauce $15.00I don't eat pork, so can't comment but my friend said it was too dry. 4) Salad - Roasted Tahitian Squash, Shaved Turnip, Cara Cara Orange, Toasted Seeds, Miso Dressing (vegan) $14I loved everything about this salad. It was so good. Giving 4 stars because Konbi is a bit pricey for what it is, but the food is definitely good.

I feel like reviews don't warrant one star ratings unless the food and service was just atrocious. As you didn't get what you ordered or it's just inedible somehow. But here we are. The food itself is not terrible not spectacular for the price as many have mentioned. But the real issue is their milk jam. I bought a fairly expensive product 13$ for a small bottle of jam and found that it was completely covered in mold upon opening it. This is just purely unacceptable, if you can't do the quality control to make sure your products are viable you truly should not sell them. Mold is a public safety hazard and it's just common sense for any food establishment to ensure that they aren't serving food that can get consumers sick. Truly, based on this experience I can't recommend neither their food nor their products. If they could just hand me a bottle of moldy jam then can you imagine what their quality control standards for the food are like.

I've never had pork katsu before or any katsu for that matter, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought it was very tasty. The pork was juicy and crispy and the sauce had a nice tang to it. The egg salad with jammy egg was delicious and so pretty. Loved the dijon mustard kick. I thought the bread was going to be super pillowy soft for both sandwiches but it wasn't. Maybe slightly stale? :/ If they fixed the bread, lowered the prices by about 20%, and magically inherited a parking lot, I'd give them 5 stars.

Unfortunately, it seems like Konbi is cutting corners with quality now. The sandwich bread is stale and dry now (not legit milk bread). The egg salad is bland, and the katsu is hard and dry. For some reason there is barely any cabbage anymore in the katsu sando, and it's boiled into mush. It also seems like they are serving old pastries, not new ones made each morning.I used to come here a lot, and it's sad that they have sacrificed quality considering how expensive it is ($11 for egg sando, $15 for katsu sando).
