Kumiko is currently considered to be one of the best bars
Kumiko is currently considered to be one of the best bars in the world. They are an elegant, timeless Japanese dining bar, offering innovative mixology and a seafood-forward tasting menu. Small plates may also be ordered a la carte. Owner Julia Momosé blends Japanese ingredients and techniques to create drinks that are truly one of a kind. My husband and I enjoyed their Seasonal Tasting Menu, priced at $135/person, and ordered cocktails a la carte. The menu consisted of 7 courses, perfectly paced over about 90 minutes. Stand out dishes were the Hokkaido Scallop Crudo and Blue Prawn amuse bouche, Sunchoke Chawanmushi, and Sobacha Custard, which featured pear frozen yogurt and black sesame feuilletine. The food was outstanding, but where Kumiko really shines is their cocktail program. The "Tryptych", a silky, martini-esque drink left me speechless. It incorporates Kokuryu 'Kuzuryu Junmai, 'Tenshi no Yuwaku' Imo Shochu, Nanbu Bijin 'Muto' Umeshu, Armagnac, and purple sweet potato vinegar. The "Cloud Hopper" (Hakutake 'Shiro' Rice Shochu, Fidencio 'Clasico' Mezcal, passionfruit, green cardamom, oat milk, Yakult, lemon) was a sweet, fruity finish. My husband is currently not drinking alcohol, and was still able to enjoy the experience with expertly crafted non-alcoholic cocktails, and high quality tea. Service was polished and professional. This was a perfect date night for us, and we look forward to returning the next time we are in Chicago.

This is one of the best affordable sushi places in La hands down! The service is always on point they're nothing but respectful and the actual restaurant feels as an authentic sushi joint.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for birthday drinks with my group of girlfriends.
It was a super unique and calm atmosphere, where we could enjoy unique beverages that suited the wide spectrum of taste we all had. The service was excellent and the ambience was soothing and we could have a decent conversation And hear each other perfectly. There is also an extensive spirit free cocktail list, which I personally greatly appreciated. Definitely worth a stop for unique experience!
Be the first to ReplyGreat speakeasy and cocktail bar.
Cocktails are great and small bites are delicious, however, the small bites are pretty small. Ambiance and service is 10/10, it's a very Japanese vibe and you really feel like you are living a Japanese experience.

I went to Kumiko with friends for my birthday, and the experience was absolutely impeccable! It's not an exaggeration to say that Julia Momose is a genius, and Kumiko clearly deserves its spot on the list of World's 100 Best Cocktail Bars. While the cocktails are experience, they're truly all so thoughtful, creative, unique...and, of course, delicious. Not only are the cocktails great, but the entire experience at Kumiko is truly elevated. Momose has clearly thought of every last detail in her vision (and execution) for this place. She greeted us personally at the host stand and offered to take our coats. What a nice touch! The service was also excellent; pacing of service was relaxed, but our server was also incredibly attentive. I loved Kumiko, and I can't wait to return. What a special place!
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite cocktail bar in Chicago They are so deserving
My favorite cocktail bar in Chicago They are so deserving of their spot as the best bar in Midwest. Truly a special experience elevated by the gentle, quiet energy that's often hard to find in West Loop. Kinda tough to snag a last minute reservation but bar seatings are first come first serve! Prepare to be charmed by Kumiko's extensive cocktail menu filled with delicate names. Loved the milk punch Clear to the eye but milky to your taste buds. It tastes bright and has this subtle sweet & creamy flavor that masks the alcohol taste. From the signature, try the sea flower - zesty, salty and fun. Ask for recs too bc the servers light up to share their favs! Food menu is limited but has the essentials. Treat it as a complement to your drinks, especially the pickles and nuts!! Do not leave without getting the truffle milk toast Perfectly toasted Japanese milk bread topped with fermented honey ice cream and truffle shavings. It's sweet and tastes so expensive. The perfect way to end your night.
Be the first to ReplyI consider Kumiko to be one of the best craft cocktail bars
I consider Kumiko to be one of the best craft cocktail bars in Chicago. The service, menu items, and atmosphere are all perfect. They will consider walk in's, but I highly suggest making a reservation. Kumiko is not very large. This bar may also not be ideal for large groups of people. More ideal for date night or 4 friends. My husband and I sat at a table during our first visit to Kumiko and at bar seats the other two times. I highly prefer sitting at the bar. It was neat to be able to directly interact with the bartenders. They often would show us the bottles and give us tons of background spirits, cocktails, etc. The owner was bartending during one of our visits sitting at the bar, which I thought was cool. I've had several different cocktails here and they all were excellent. The potato salad, karaage, A5 sando, and milk toast are all really delicious. The food is really good, but there are also dozens of other excellent restaurants nearby. Especially if you want a heavier meal.

Wow! My boyfriend had been here previously and really talked this place up so we made reservations while we were in town, and it did not disappoint. The service was spectacular- some of the best I've had. They were always there and attentive, but never in your face. The food came out fast but just at the right pace, and also, it was delicious. We loved everything we had. The restaurant is small, but cozy. Highly recommend this gem! And get a cocktail, they were all amazing. (Or mocktail, also fantastic!)

We came for the drinks and then I proceeded to have second supper like the hobbit I guess I am. The setting is quite intimate and allows for great conversation while you struggle to choose amongst a myriad of interesting cocktail options. Our server was a fantastic guide through the fog of our indecision and helped in picking out some delicious noshes as well. This did include an earthy sweet kabocha dish that launched me into a Ratatouille-level reverie - can't say I expected it, but I'll take the pleasant surprise.
Be the first to ReplyThis place does live up to the hype.
We came for what we thought would be just 1-2 drinks but then didn't want to stop trying the food it was so good and unique! The ambiance is very cool with the bar giving a glimpse to the kitchen and all the Japanese sake. The flights are a very cool idea. When our budget allows we will definitely be back for the full dining experience and try more pours.
Be the first to ReplyKumiko is a rare gem.
The ambiance is dark and moody, but also romantic and elegant. It's obvious that the staff are well trained because the service is impeccable. Kumiko is the brainchild of an acclaimed bartender, so be creative with your drink choice. I got the Moonrise Daiquiri flight, which was a unique way to experience a cocktail. Even though it's a cocktail bar the food is excellent. We especially loved the croquettes and the karage (fried chicken). Definitely a great place for dates, or impressing out of towners, and certainly a spot to get dolled up for.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend and I were so excited to finally try Kumiko.
We went in on a Friday evening with no reservation. We were prepared to go somewhere else if there wasn't any availability, but the hostess sat us down within at the bar within 10 minutes. She asked if we planned on only drinks, and we informed her that we'd also like to eat dinner. The drinks were good. The food took a while to come and OMG, this isn't regular food. The portion sizes are for toddlers or gnomes. But the portions are certainly not for regular people (even though the pricing would suggest it is a regular portion). We ordered about 5 things. We were disappointed at the portion size, but we just shrugged it off and enjoyed ourselves. The food was meh We were there for a little over an hour and every 3 minutes during that hour while our food was present (that's NOT an exaggeration) someone would ask to clear our plates that we were obviously still eating from! They even had the gall to take plates away while we were literally eating from them. We were annoyed at this because we had so little food already, we were like, "PLEASE...leave the food!" Or, give it back, in a few cases. We were silly. We thought we could go in, sit at the bar, relax and enjoy our food and drinks ... but NO!What no one told us when we sat down (or we would have gone somewhere else) is that they give you a STRICT HOUR at the bar to eat/drink and then you MUST GO! So apparently the reason people were trying to take our plates every few minutes and curling us like vultures is because they were trying very very hard to rush us out. We were oblivious to this, and so after about an hour the manager came over to dress us down about our lingering. In an extremely passive-aggressive tone the manager informed us that, "your server has been doing EVERYTHING she possibly can to accommodate you, but these seats have a strict 1hr time limit, and you've exceeded that hour." We were floored. We came in to drink, eat , and enjoy ... but apparently, at Kumiko, enjoyment is inappropriate. Her interruption completely ruined our experience there. The people sitting next to us even commented, "Wow! That was really harsh and unnecessary!"FOOD:Scallops (the most $$) were small and cheap grade D scallops about the size of your pinky fingernail! The dish had too much umami and not enough bite so it felt like I was eating a wet bland tongue that had a previously rough night. Gross. The caviar on top is totally wasted in this dish because the overall bland flavor just washed the caviar right out. Whoever the chef is needs to go back to culinary school and learn about flavor balance. The dish was something like $38 for about the equivalent of one and a half regular sized scallops. Totally not worth it. And in very poor taste. The fried chicken was good because fried chicken is generally good--difficult to mess up. It was also greasy and not my preferred food to fill up on. But it was certainly the most hearty of the dishes. The mackerel was (again) too umami and not good flavor balance. It's served lightly seared, so basically raw, in umami dashi (broth). And that's the sum of the dish. It was underwhelming to say the least, and lacked anything that pulled the dish together in an interesting or memorable way. Very boring. The pickles were great, and I know because I make the same pickles at home. LolThe entire bill with 4 drinks and 5 items came out to $300. For that, we were "allowed" to sit at the bar for an hour, constantly disturbed by servers, who I affectionately call Kumiko Vultures, now.The staff is not only rude, but passive aggressive in their behavior, ESPECIALLY the manager. If you decide to go, enjoy a drink then get food somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyA very interesting meal.
Cocktails were incredibly curious, food was divine. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a fantastic dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyI was so happy to finally try one of the best bars in
I was so happy to finally try one of the best bars in America right now. The service, cocktails, and food were impeccable. We ordered two rounds of cocktails and several dishes for dinner. My favorite dish was the scallop salad. The presentation was beautiful and the scallops melted in your mouth with each bite being flavorful with bright citrus and savory brown butter and ponzu. My favorite cocktail was my ume old fashioned. It was unlike any old fashioned I've ever had. It was only available during this time of year when ume trees are blooming. It was the most balanced cocktail I've had in recent memory. Not too strong, not too sweet, just perfectly mixed. If you're ever in Chicago and have a chance to try Kumiko, I can definitely say it lives up to the hype of one of the best bars in America.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic drink (spirit and spirit-free) and food offerings
Fantastic drink (spirit and spirit-free) and food offerings in a cozy candlelit space. The staff is welcoming and took good care of me; Javen, Celeste, and behind the bar, Kayla, makes delightful and enchanting cocktails with grace and precision. Protea (spirit-free): rich, smooth & creamy made with purple potato vinegar. Sweet, but not too sweet. Love at first sip!
Be the first to ReplyOk finally we got to try Kumiko! The goodThe drinks!
Ok finally we got to try Kumiko! The goodThe drinks! Amazing! We were lucky enough to sit next to some OG's that kind of told us their favs. The cocktail and mocktail menu is IMPRESSIVE! You definitely have to try. I did cocktails. The hubby did mocktails. Both I would recommend! The food! Excellent! I wished the fried chicken came out with the pickles for that crunchy, salty....but really the fried chicken was DELISH. The crab was great. I liked the mushroom dish BUT I would say, it was a tad too salty for us however still really great. Oysters fresh and yummy. Dessert was different BUT amazing! The ambiance!Love the vibe! I absolutely loved the space...minus the front area crowdedness The badThe front area...what a cluster. It's tight, small and uncoordinated. It was really hard for them to handle anything more than 2 people at the front with coat check and seating. When we left at 8p, it was like a massive game of Tetris. The time issue...so we arrived at 635p for our 630p reservo. We sat at the front waiting to be checked in for another 7ish minutes. Not a big deal but what is a big deal was that the front of the house told us they needed the table at 8p that there was another reservation. We sat at our table waiting on cocktails and food and just normal dinner stuff, but I have to say, the comment about needing the table really threw us both off. We felt rushed and rude if we weren't going to be out right at 8p. We are a full meal...so it really wasn't enough time for us to enjoy. We didn't ask questions about the menu because I felt like we had to get our order in. Didn't ask questions about the drinks because we felt rushed. It just kind of ruined the overall vibe for me there. Listen, I would go back...I would just like a later seating so I didn't feel like I was being pushed out.
Be the first to Replythe food 4.
7/5the ambiance 5/5the service 3.8/5decided to stop by here on a whim with my bf since we were both in the office today (Thursday). no reservations available so we walked up a few minutes before opening and waited in a short line to be let in. we snagged two seats at the bar for drinks and bites. beautiful space -- and the attention to detail from the stunning woodwork in the inner "windows" and the intricate work in the partitions between bar and kitchen was outstanding. the glassware was beautiful and suited the cocktails very nicely. the overall service was pretty good, though unfortunately hit a bit of a snag with the bartender when i asked a question about the taste of my first cocktail: i liked it, but it tasted pretty neutral -- until i reached the bottom sip of the drink where the flavour of the citrus cordial was totally concentrated -- i felt she thought i was telling her she prepared it wrongly but i was just curious as to whether that was the desired effect or not (as i've had other cocktails where flavours are meant to build). anyway, she seemed slightly defensive and asked if i wanted another one, which is not really what i wanted nor was i fishing for a free drink. i told her that wasn't necessary but she made one anyway. (turns out the second one was actually mixed well and had a more complex and interesting taste.)only bringing this up because it did contribute to drop in overall review, and honestly expect a little more conversation and understanding from a bartender of "one of the top 50 bars in the world". however, the rest of the experience and service from everyone was fine. the food was incredible. highlights: wagyu tartare special, tonkatsu sando, maitakedon (i don't like mushrooms but this was really great), and the truffle milk toast (though i would have preferred it with something else replacing the truffle, but my bf thought the flavour combo was interesting and liked it). one last snag was that we ordered the otsukemono, the pickles, which were noted as $4 each, but even though we just ordered one, three pickled veggies came out and we were actually charged $12, which seems both odd and purposefully vague on the menu and/or from the person taking our order. not a huge deal, but seems like a miss. would definitely return to try some more cocktails, hopefully the small menu gets some new additions throughout the year to keep things interesting.

Great place to come for unique and delicious cocktails, late night bites, and good conversation. the ambiance is fantastic! dark but warm lighting, well spaced out seating, soft music in the background, beautiful plants scattered throughout the space - we were seated at the bar and it was perfect to take in the whole atmosphere! we got the oysters and scallop salad to share while I sipped on the walk softly cocktail. the oysters were super fresh and tasty and the drink was really well balanced and light and refreshing! the staff at the bar were so knowledgable and passionate about their work. It was so cool watching and hearing about how the drinks are made!definitely make reservations! It seemed like walk-ins were difficult

This place is so good! We made reservations here over a month in advance to make sure we could make it on a Saturday despite the only opening left being at 9pm. I heard that Kumiko was known for their drinks, but the small menu gave me the expectation that their food was probably all intentional and each done properly. We ordered oysters, miso soup, the katsu sando, scallop salad, and the truffle honey toast. All of the food was amazing, I would definitely come back to re-order our exact meal again in the future. While dinner was amazing, the truffle honey toast blew it out of the water. In true essence of typical Asian style desserts, it wasn't "too sweet." The truffle and honey was perfectly balanced without either being too overwhelming. The drinks were really good, but I get kind of peeved when big ice cubes are stacked so high that they go over the rim of the glass and make it undrinkable (unless you want to get smacked in the lip with the cube every sip). Service was pleasant and overall good. I will say that something that made me feel really weird was the fact that our server explained the daily specials only to my partner?? Body language was facing turned from me, and she never looked over at me once even though I was staring at her the whole time haha. I couldn't hear any of the specials because she was talking away from me, and since I'm typically the decision maker for what we order, money was definitely left on the table here as I likely would've ordered more if I knew. My fiancé mentioned that he also noticed this too, so I know it wasn't just me over analyzing. Overall had a good experience. I love the intimate vibe of the interior and appreciated how friendly the person up front was in regards to greeting us and taking our coats+giving our coats back at the end of the night.
Be the first to ReplyVery fancy and elevated vibe.
A full menu of mocktails and a few little snacks that were tasty as well. A very small entryway for waiting so be aware of larger groups. Service is very friendly and they give you hand towels at the start of the meal. We got several drinks but the pepperberry, mosaic, and the omebashi swizzle were great as well as the red chai. I loved the vinegar tang of the swizzle like kombucha. Also, the potato salad was really good and had crispy fried potatoes within it.the cashews and pickles were a unique snack as well.
Be the first to ReplyI watched "the menu" recently & this is the first
I watched "the menu" recently & this is the first restaurant i've been to since that reminded me of it. Don't worry, no one dies but the way the staff worked together & stayed on top of the service reminded me of it. Also the way I was able to talk about the food with the server reminded me of the movie. The restaurant itself is exclusive, dim, and aesthetic of japanese americano speak easyThe food was decadent! The oysters just slid right into your mouth with no slimey or smelly taste. The karaage was an okay choice for a cheaper option. The meat was very flavorful but the crisp wasn't there for me. The wagyu sando was my favorite! The best & most expensive sando I've ever had ($90). The dessert had truffle but i didn't even notice. It was like creme brulee toast with honey cream like ice cream on top. Great date night spot! If you want to take better quality pics there, ask them to bring you a lamp! I saw a table had that & I was kind of jealous.
Be the first to ReplyMy name is Tony but they kept referring to me as Toby.
They even signed this book as Toby, lol. Despite being the only high-end restaurant to consistently refer to me by the wrong name (1st time ever) I enjoyed the food, lol.I may refer to myself as Toby going forward. We will see.Great food, solid service.
Be the first to ReplyHad a fantastic time.
The waitstaff was wonderful and very attentive. The cocktails were great and the snacks were delicious. Great spot for a date night.
Be the first to ReplyOk. I understand the hype. Chicago doesn't have a place
Ok. I understand the hype. Chicago doesn't have a place like this. But honestly you can get a much better cocktail elsewhere. The food quality was ok but the service was absolutely horrible and you get charge a 20% service fee, no exception. Every server is so rushed - getting your orders set up to cleaning your plates before you even finish your bite to shoveling you out of the door in a snap. While we were still "enjoying" our experience within the 90 min limit ( btw they didn't tell us about it ahead of time), we were asked to leave cuz they need to "sanitize the table" for the next party. Will not return and I highly recommend you checking out Thomas D's one star review as well.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a nice place to come for drinks.
It's a little intimate though because you are in a small space with a lot of people but it's not too loud or quiet (but maybe it's because of the extensive drink menu). Their food menu is basically bar food so it tends to be on the saltier side and it comes out when the food is done, which I didn't mind. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable if you have no idea what you're ordering. 20% gratuity is already included in the bill. The cocktails are good and the descriptions do a good job of describing them. I got the walk softly and the vodka didn't taste strong and it was a mild drink as opposed to the snowdrop one where they salted and peppered the rim. The flavor was stronger and they infused lemon in that one.I enjoyed the Karaagé because of the thicker breading with the dipping sauce and the Gyūdon. The Gyūdon is a little slimy but the short rib was so tender and you can taste the caramelized onions. The bf liked the Nikumaki the most. It tasted like a bacon-y sausage wrapped around carrots with sauce. I ordered an oyster to try and it tasted like the sea so I don't think it's for me but the presentation was cute. Tonkatsu sando was a pretty good size (especially compared to the Nikumaki) and tastes like what you would expect but the Katsu wasn't especially crispy on the outside.
