L'Ardoise Bistro is a hidden gem in the city, offering up a tasty blend of French flavors in a cozy setting. The staff here are top-notch. We started with the asparagus and escargot, which were a hit - perfectly cooked and full of flavor. For the main event, we went for the coq au vin, and it didn't disappoint. Tender chicken in a rich wine sauce - what more could you ask for? The only downside? The tables are a bit close together, so it can get a bit loud and you might catch bits of other people's conversations. Overall, L'Ardoise Bistro is a must-visit for French food lovers.

This is one of the places I recommend for a date night in the city. I love the ambiance and how romantic it is. It nested in Duboce Triangle district which is a such a cute area. Came here for an anniversary dinner and had a fantastic night! For appetizer, we had the escargot and warm bijou goat cheese salad. Great starters! For entrees, we got the leg duck confit and braised bistro coq au vin. Let me just say, YUM! I have no words. everything came out perfect and was amazing. We paired it with glass of red wine and it was just a great meal overall. Never hurts to get dessert at the end and I must say their dessert is exquisite! I love their apple tarte tatin and their floating island. Everything was spot on. Highly recommend this place !
Be the first to ReplyGot a ribeye and a truffle risotto.
The food tasted amazing but the service felt kinda snobby. The vibe is nice. Don't sit near the wine bottle shelf as a bottle fell and wine and glass splashed on me.
Be the first to Replygood food and ambiance.
portion sizes are also rly nice and the dessert was also rly good

I'm hesitant to leave this review because L'Ardoise is arguably my favorite restaurant in SF and I don't really want to share. It's an intimate restaurant making a great date night and the food is par excellence. Service is always amazing and you can call the restaurant to make a reservation. The Tiger Prawn Ravioles are a great start to the meal and they can be made shareable. For entrees, I suggest the Steak with Pommes Landaises or the seasonal Risotto. The Duck is another good option if steak isn't your preference. This restaurant is in my regular rotation and I've never had a negative experience.

As my grandfather said way back in the 70s and the 80s. What more do you want at a restaurant. Keep it going. Thank you and much love.

Be the first to ReplyThis is a great spot for spot on French food.
It's been awhile since I had a great meal in the city without breaking the bank. Unpretentious, consistent and well executed, I will be back...

AMAZING! This place is one of the top restaurants in SF for a reason ! Can't miss the duck
Be the first to ReplyHad a great dinner here with a friend.
The service was excellent (maybe a tad too attentive but better than the alternative). Server was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. The ambience is perfect; cozy with comfortable seating and dim light, not too noisy. We got the window seat and it was so nice and tucked away and great for people watching. The food was mostly fantastic. Nothing innovative, just very well made French bistro staples. We got one of the specials for a starter (some kind of endive salad) and it was a little underwhelming but the mains were delicious; duck confit and steak frites. Would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat French restaurant on a quiet street.
Enjoy 4 course meal French style! We started with Brussel sprouts and ravioli for appetizers with a bottle of red. The wine was delicious! I had the rack of lamb for entrée and it was the best lamb ever! Floating island dessert with a digestive made up the perfect dinner.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
Very good value and easy street parking (not really, but Muni Metro is close)

Be the first to ReplyI've been coming here for years.
I can't recall the first time, but I know every time I come here, it is guaranteed to be a great experience. I finally came back after over a year due to COVID. The outdoor dining set up is wonderful, bordering on the romantic. The restaurant is located on a charming street filled with a canopy of tall trees, and Victorians. We sat in an enchanting table with two heat lamps, and white string lights that made for memorable dining experience. Prior to COVID the interior of the restaurant was cozy and charmingly decorated. As usual, the French are adept at bringing beauty and artfulness to an otherwise dark street in the Castro. On this evening, I was accompanied by a French man, who has eaten here numerous times and loves this place. If an actual French person actually loves this place, then the food is legitimately authentic. We were nothing but complimentary to everything brought to our table.Tonight we both ordered the beet salad, duck confit, a bottle of Vaqueryas and the creme brûlée. Everything was delicious and the waiters were polite and spoke beautiful French to my friend--the usual pleasantries and exchange. This place is wonderful and I wouldn't change a thing.
Be the first to ReplyI don't usually give out 5 stars, but I felt like this
I don't usually give out 5 stars, but I felt like this place really deserved it. Everything from the service to the food was impeccable as well as well priced for French food. The portions were decent and the food itself was flavorful. We made a reservation as it was date night and thankfully were promptly seated. Once there we ordered:* tiger prawn ravioles - this was out of the world delicious and the sauce itself was amazing. I could not stop eating this*coq au vin - this was this hearty chicken dish with mashed potatoes in this gravy with onions and bacon and was in every way divine. I could not stop eating this* duck confit - this was also well made and the duck was crispy on the outside, wish the meat was more fall off the bone but overall really nice. The potatoes this came with was out of the world and well seasoned*floating island - this was a merengue dessert and came with this sauce thing on the side which was delicious and flavorful. My boyfriend gobbled his down and enjoyed!Overall, really enjoyed this dish and would go back here again!

Authentic and not overpriced and pretentious. Totally recommend it.

Favorite "on the block" French place when we used to live near by. Make sure you have reservations as it can get busy - walking by and dropping your name is a good tactic. Our favorites were the filet mignon, risotto, and brussel sprout salad.

L'Ardoise is great!! My boyfriend and I were amazed by the Tiger Prawn Ravioli and the Creme Brûlée; those things were beyond good! He ordered lamb and that was delicious! The sauce on it was so good! I ordered the filet and it wasn't my favorite but that was more of a personal preference issue; if you like filet you will most likely like it! I wish I'd ordered the duck leg confit; next time I'm in San Fran hopefully! I highly recommend this place!
Be the first to ReplyOverall 5/5.
We came for a birthday dinner. There have been a few changes in number of people but they were very accommodating. Two people ended up not making it and they were generous about it. I have been always wanting to try this place out, and It did meet my expectations. Escargot - 5/5. I liked the sauce Ravioli - 5/5Risotto was also awesome. It was rich and a hint of truffle flavor was just the right amount. One of our friends dropped a chunk of his lamb, but even though we said we were okay, they brought more. They also let us in earlier than their open time as we had a plan in one hour so we feel less rushed. Also offered to take pictures and give us some simple birthday desserts. staff can be come off very direct (when they are confused about your order they will make it obvious, haha). I would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite go-to French restaurants in SF.
So consistently good with traditional cuisine française such as confit de canard (my favorite) and steak frites. The staff range from old French guy who's been in SF since the 80's to some cool recent arrivals that makes you think of the guy in Emily in Paris. En fin, on mange bien ici!

My favorite neighborhood restaurant in a city full of extraordinary options. The warm and beautiful interior, the standout regular menu items augmented by great seasonal specials, the professionalism of the servers, the after-dinner dessert wines we were graciously offered by the house just to make a great meal even more magical...I feel so very lucky to have a place this reliably sublime just a few blocks from my front door.
Be the first to ReplyThe food and ambience are excellent.
The wine list, duck confit and perfectly French culinary style make this restaurant special. However, after eating a delicious 3 course meal, I made a simple mistake and left my sunglasses at the restaurant. Despite returning twice in person to ask for their return, the staff informed me that they had searched and not found the glasses. However, later, my husband called again and within seconds, was informed the glasses had been located. Something about the situation felt dishonest.

Great spot in Duboce Triangle! They currently have outdoor and indoor seating but best to make a reservation on opentable if you want to guarantee a spot. The service was on spot and good place for a date night. We tried the brussel sprout salad, lamb chops entree, flank steak entree and got sides of butter spinach and wild mushrooms. Each table also gets free bread FYI. The lamb is definitely a classic and was made perfectly. The dish itself can definitely be shared as well as I had leftovers after dinner. The flank steak was also good to eat as well. The way they fried their potatoes was crispy and full of flavor. I loved it! I would pass on the butter spinach next time as its literally just cooked spinach ( I thought it would be a cream spinach by mistake). Overall, I like it! Romantic...cozy...great foood!
Be the first to ReplyI really enjoyed their rack of lamb.
We were able to split it and shared the duck in between us. We got it medium rare and it was very well seasoned. Their duck meat was falling off the bones but if I was to come back I would order the rack of lamb again. We also got their tiger prawns ravioli, which was also simple and good. It gets crowded so I would definitely recommend a reservation. It's street parking, sometime you can drive a few blocks and get lucky with free parking.
