Went here for dinner this evening with some of my colleagues. ** **The Great**1. Rendang Curry - This was easily the best thing we had this evening. It isn't even close to traditional rendang, but it's a really flavorful lamb curry with a nice quirky presentation. Strongly recommended. 2. Red Endive - An outstanding salad to share packed with flavor and texture, fresh ingredients and just hit the spot perfectly. 3. Ukoy - Reminiscent of a fancy pakora but very crispy and super delicious. The old bay seasoning pairs nicely with their ranch**The Good**1. Poppyseed Steamed Bun - It was not bad but kind of plain jane and one dimensional. Nothing really stood out and popped. 2. Fried Game Hen - The batter was perfectly crispy and crunchy and the hen was beautifully cooked to perfection. The broccolini was perfect. The honey sauce however was too sweet and the black vinegar did little to balance it out. Also, the random cashews thrown onto the plate added nothing to the dish and in fact were hard to eat as were the thin slices of pineapple that felt out of place. 3. Gulf Shrimp - The crispy rice was the star of the show here and everyone loved it and fought over it. The shrimp were just standard shrimp, nothing to write home about. 4. Desserts - The Baked Hawaii and the Banana Cream Tart were both pretty good, but again, nothing spectacular. The slivers of orange on the place were kind of meaningless and would have been so much better as a fresh zingy sauce to pair with the rich desserts instead of a side on the plate. **The Mehhh**1. Petrale Sole - It just had no flavor. The fish was cooked perfectly but lacked seasoning and none of the ginger sesame flavors came through. Definitely pass on this. 2. Charred Savoy Cabbage - There was nothing charred about it. It was cabbage with a very funky cheese dressing that tasted a lot more like gorgonzola than aged gouda. Nothing else came through. Hard pass. 3. Kimchi Fried Rice - This was easily the worst dish of the evening. There was nothing kimchi or fried about the rice. The kimchi was mild with no flavor, the rice was barely tossed around in it with no wokhay and the spam was, well it was spam. I cook and eat this dish very very often; this is not even close to what it's true potential is. Overall the food had a few hits but a fair number of misses, the prices are quite steep but somehow customers have been convinced that the bustling cafeteria ambiance with people crammed onto benches and served on bulk bought plates is now upscale and chic just because reservations are hard to get. And then they added a 20% tip but called it an "equitable compensation fee" which apparently is supposed to make us feel okay about it; kudos to the marketing team for coming up with that BS. p.s. Shoutout to the wait staff. You guys did an outstanding job and the service was a definitely 10/10.
