My boyfriend and I came to Little Alley for dinner on a Sunday night. We arrived a little bit after 6pm and, even though there was plenty of seating available at this time, there were definitely more people than I anticipated which is always a good sign! The very kind hostess guided us to our table and handed us menus. Then, our server really promptly came by to offer us water and tell us he would check back in a few minutes for our order. He was really attentive of us the whole time. I was very impressed by the interior of the restaurant-- the decor with exposed brick walls, neon lights, the wooden telephone booth in the corner, and dim lightning really transport you and make you feel like you are in a different place. The ambiance has a little hint of mystery and excitement because of this, I loved it a lot! For drinks we ordered the Class 3-2 which was a drink that had cucumber, lime, and aloe, as well as the Moulin Rouge which had some hints of raspberry, mint, and lime. I loved the Class 3-2 since it had a very subtle sweet flavor but had these small chunks of cucumber which added a tiny bit of bitterness and a really nice texture. The Moulin Rouge was tart and refreshing. It was also delicious! For food we ordered and shared: Yan Du Xian: This soup really hit the spot. It was loaded with very hearty ingredients that made it feel super comforting and nourishing. It came with a very mild broth that was very subtly salted and had a little bit of the flavor of pork in it. It also came loaded with veggies like bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, and bamboo shoot which made it healthy and filling. Finally, it had some tofu skin, as well as pork belly that was incredibly tender, with salted pork pieces that tasted a lot like bacon and added a little bit of saltiness to the dish without being overpowering. Probably my favorite thing that I tried here! It felt very healthy, filling, and wholesome. This is the kind of soup I would want on a rainy day or if I am sick. Portion size was incredibly generous. Pork Soup Dumplings: This comes with 6 dumplings. The dumpling skin was perfectly cooked, and they were generously filled with flavorful pork. I think what stood out to me was the broth inside them-- it was so rich and full of flavor with predominant umami hints balanced by a subtle flavor of ginger all soaked up in the dumpling skin. My boyfriend said these were the best pork dumplings he has had in the city and that he would come back to Little Alley just for these. I definitely suggest getting them as a dish to share. They are delicious and really satisfying! Also very nice to eat when the weather is cold, they just warm you up inside. Worth trying!Braised Yellow Croaker: whole yellow croaker that comes braised in this really thick, sweet/sour sauce which was to die for. It comes loaded with shiitake mushrooms, peppers, as well as a little bit of pork. The fish was incredibly tender and the meat was so easily taken off the bone. Very well prepared! I was impressed. It comes with a side of white rice so you can pair them together and it goes really well. Had never had croaker braised but loved this preparation. Would definitely order this again. Shanghai Stir Fried Thick Noodle: another fantastic dish! The noodles were well cooked and were (as the name implies) very thick, which I really enjoyed as a girl who loves her carbs. They were chewy and really soaked up all the ingredients. I was worried it would be a dish on the saltier side but I was pleasantly surprised to find this is a lot more mild that it appears to be (coming from someone who is very salt sensitive.) This was very enjoyable, substantial, and hearty. It came with plenty of mushrooms, pork, shrimp, and greens that all added great flavor and textures. Portion size was pretty large! Truly loved the thick noodles. Overall, I had a wonderful dinner at Little Alley. The ambiance was really unique which is great for a date night, the service was exceptional, and the food had outstanding quality for a really reasonable price. The portion sizes were large and we left very happy and satisfied with our meal. Definitely check out this restaurant if you are looking for some delicious Shanghainese food. 11/10 would recommend! Can't wait to return in the future for more great eats.
