A must try
This is one of these restaurants that's on the Best of DC list year after year and where we'd always wanted to go but somehow never made it. There's really no excuse except that it's a tiny basement place, doesn't take reservations so there's always a likelihood you might have to wait in line in order to dine - for a prefix dinner at over $100 for two and having to wait in line just might not be something everyone would find appealing. However, now as a result of the pandemic, it's become takeout only, plus in addition to the prefix menu for two, there are also a number of a la carte options which I don't think was available before. Online ordering is very easy, the website works well. Pick up smooth as well - they have a little table set up outside and one of the staff will go inside to bring the order out to you. This time we tried the Mekong whiskey pork ribs, curry shrimp, and the minced cat fish with cabbage (lettuce might work better however). This is definitely not your average Thai food. Everything is delicious and full of interesting flavors and spices. Just a bit pricey, small to average portions but well worth the splurge.

We ordered takeout from its limited menu as it is almost impossible to get a table without a long wait.
Perhaps their takeout food is not up to the quality of its eat-in food (which I doubt) but we were deeply disappointed in all but the starter glass noodle salad (which was excellent). In addition to the salad we ordered the pork ribs, chicken laap, and the mushroom stir-fry.
The ribs were very fatty and the chicken and mushroom dishes were too salty - so much so that the mushroom dish was inedible.
We do not intend to patronize Little Serow ever. For Thai cuisine we are quite happy with Baan Siam.
Overrated Thai Fixed Menu
Service was excellent however the food was just so so. Fresh ingredients but were too salty. The fish, pork and beef were all grounded. The tofu was fried too long it lost all tofu favor. Non alcoholic beverage choices were very limited.

Northern Thai / Laotian food is so rare in these parts - I was so happy to experience this and did not mind the $54 per head price tag for a no reservation first come first serve, change-every-week-menu, no modification to the menu, 7 course (really 8 b/c they toss in dessert), dark little basement spot.
What I described above is truly for the adventurous and open-minded. You’ll be completely unimpressed or maybe even offended (by portion size or simplicity of some courses) if you are anything but.
ask for extra rice!!! flavorful, heavy, salty, and spicy foods characteristic of asian cuisine demand rice to balance the palate. They also provide a basket of fresh vegetables to help break up the saltiness.
Loved loved loved laap gai lanna (chicken, chicken offal, chicken liver, and sawtooth?). it was so thick, bold, and creamy. i would have devoured this dish had i not been pregnant and could only have a little bit. another standout was the pork ribs marinated in mekhog whiskey - so full of flavor. there was another fresh salad of sorts that consisted mainly of corn, tomato, and palm sugar. i am not a fan of corn at all and i actually loved how refreshing it was. great ice cream in the end - forgot the flavor but it was a perfect ending.
Show up early if you want first seating. i showed up about 510p and there was already a bunch of people waiting outside. we still made it but it was close. it’s dark inside just fyi. sometimes the menu is seafood-heavy so the price might bump up.
Didn’t meet expectations
Had high expectations coming here given all the hype and the fact that it’s owned by the same people as Komi. The restaurant did not however meet expectations. We lined up around 4:15 and were seated when the restaurant opened. The food came out very quick, we were only there for a little more than an hour despite dinner being seven dishes. There was a common theme in the food: salty. Almost every dish was over salted in my opinion. A lot of spice too, though that’s to be expected in Thai food. Favorite dish was the shell on shrimp, which was delicious. The rest of the dishes were pretty mediocre. Maybe worth trying if you’re a big fan of Thai food but not a top restaurant in DC.

Northern Thai food. I don’t know what that means. I know I loved each of the seven courses on the menu. This is my favorite of the DC fixed price, multi-course restaurants. There were two very spicy dishes. Tiny red peppers that had a lingering heat. They give you vegetables and sticky rice to help cope with the heat. It was a flavorful heat though so you kept going back for more despite the pain. The savory items were just as good. The best was the pork rib finale. We did the drink pairing and the pork rib was paired with a French cider. Amazing. The menu is what it is. The staff will ask about allergies and warn you but they aren’t changing the menu just for you. The staff are uncommonly kind for the area. It was a wonderful experience. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and got the last free table. Go early.

If you love the spicy foods of Northern Thailand, this place is worth trying. Their food is delicious! However, it is quite pricy for seven small plates. The restaurant has a cool, dark and spartan underground vibe. Their beer and wine list has a good variety of choices. If you can’t take the heat, order the rice milk. It will put out the fire in your mouth. I really enjoyed my meal, but I’m not likely to return. At this price point, there are lots of other good restaurants to try in DC.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the city's highlights...
What I’m comparing it against: fine dining places in major cities. Thai/Asian places in major cities. Place has the same chef as one-Michelin starred “Komi.”
Vibe: Doesn’t get cooler/hip than this. Technically subterranean (a few steps below the street), and next door to the chef’s very acclaimed Komi (he was in Little Serow’s kitchen on this specific night). No reservations allowed, seats maybe more than 20 but not more than 30. Green walls (emerald?), candle lights. Music a little louder than most fine-dining places (and yes, it’s fine dining), but you’ll live. You’ll be enamored right away. I’m also thankful to the place for reminding of the existence of the Cyndi Lauper song “All Through the Night”.
Food: Authentic Thai tasting experience (no menu) – seven to nine courses perhaps. No alterations except for allergies. I don’t think you can adjust heat level, but aside from one or two dishes, you’ll be fine. I strongly suggest you order one (and perhaps even two) glasses of sweet rice milk—it’s wonderful and is really the only thing that will help with heat level (water and white wine won’t do it).
Oh, I almost forgot, you’ll be in love with what you eat. While the dishes are generally spicy, they do a good job of mixing in a couple of salads and cold dishes to lighten the mood. In fact, I think my favorite dish overall was a cold pineapple-tomato salad. I could easily eat it by the pound on a hot day. You’ll also receive a bowl of the world’s stickiest rice, plus an assortment of cold veggies (radishes, lettuce, etc.) that you can use throughout your meal. The ribs at the end of the meal would put to shame all those bandana-wearing tough guy “chefs” you see at rib festivals from Texas, Memphis and the Carolinas.
One word about the food—I actually think they serve too much food. I eat a lot (especially when I like the food), came hear at 9pm and had not eaten since 1pm, yet I had a hard time finishing (perhaps due to the two small glasses of milk). My advice is to be mindful of your rice intake, and in hindsight, I would not have FULLY ate the early meat dishes (easier said than done). You will not go hungry here. Oh, solid wine and beer list as well.
Service: Wonderful and pretty casual. They’re more than happy to answer questions about what’s in front of you.
Summary: I would actually place DC tied for third (with Chicago) behind SF and NYC for best US food city. And honestly, one may put DC ahead of Chicago if Alinea is removed from the equation. That said, this place is one if the city’s highlights, and while there’s many places in DC I’ve yet to visit, I’ve been to places like Métier, Pineapples & Pearls, Maydan, and Compass Rose, so I’m comfortable in saying that this is among the best (I’ll perhaps cross Komi off my list during my next visit).
Best diner in Washington DC on my trip
This place is difficult to find, no signs, in the basement. I like this. Good atmosphere and excellent foor, generally spicy but not too. Set menu.

Probably the best Thai I have ever eaten. Hidden away in a basement is a hidden gem with a fixed menu. Amazingly presented with awesome flavours. Cost for meal was $56 and worth it. The tofu was amazing as was the duck, and the mushroom and egg.
