Simply Amazing! Quite possibly the best culinary
Simply Amazing! Quite possibly the best culinary experience I've had in Sacramento. Chef Chris's creativity, passion and attention to detail was translated on every plate of food I tasted. I was able to catch the last night of his Game of Thrones menu and it did not disappoint. Every dish had a unique aspect that was inspired by the show and I enjoyed every moment. I'm just disappointed in myself for not opting for the wine pairing. Not only was the food amazing, but the staff was on point as well. As soon as I walked in I felt welcome and at home. The space itself was comfortable and inviting, and the open kitchen gave us a peak into the entire process. What a wonderful experience. I don't want to spoil this experience for anyone else so I'll just this review here. Grateful that Chef Chris decided to choose Sacramento to establish this restaurant, we need more places like this in our city.
Be the first to ReplyWellll I have a new favorite restaurant.
In the world. And it's Localis. I enjoyed almost every single detail of this restaurant. Every plate of food was incredible, thoughtful, well plated, and progressed well as a whole menu. The chicken demo-truffle gastrique was life changing. That's the single best sauce I've ever tasted. The overall ambiance was very...zen? That's the best adjective I have. Localis is a very approachable approach to incredible fine dining. I've been to other Michelin starred restaurants around the world that do the white everything, bread crumb scooper, everyone in suits. That isn't Localis and that's a good thing. I loved how we met different team members throughout the night and didn't have just one person to talk with the entire time. My only hiccup on the evening. We had the non alcoholic pairing and most of the drinks were fantastic. There were a couple I didn't love. I really didn't love the price of the non alcoholic pairing at $110. I think $60 would have been a fair price for a non alcoholic pairing. There was an extreme amount of detail and thought that went into each drink but if it wasn't our anniversary, we would have passed. Will absolutely return in the future!

This review is so overdue! My at the time boyfriend (now husband) took me here on a surprise date to celebrate an accomplishment. Honestly, I don't think there are words that can describe the experience. We had the tasting menu- the culinary journey we took was beyond anything I've ever tried. Each dish was carefully curated with a background story that was put together to tell one big story. The team is exceptional. Everyone clearly loves being there. Each team member was putting their heart and soul into what they were doing. Everyone was very involved. The night was phenomenal. It wasn't just a dinner- this was a multi hour experience that we wished never would end. Yes, we were all impressed and wowed by the food but the fact that it also felt like we were all close friends is what truly puts the cherry on top. For me personally, I admire the fact that they source locally from ethical farms. I strive to do the same in my home kitchen. I also love that the employees are all taken care of. The restaurant shuts down for two weeks to let everyone take paid time off. As an HR professional- this is near and dear to my heart. TL;DR: this is worth every penny. Make your reservation and enjoy the night

Fun time and 2. Enjoyed the ambience, attitude and creativity. First to comment on negative reviews that I find stupid on here... because this place is great. As the person attending - research the place and the chef as well as the food being served. I don't think it's right to complain about a price or food that is offered / if you know in advance. So I would ignore reviews that complain about these things. I paid $265.18 a person and a single glass of wine was $40. Old fashioned $20. Time to take to eat about 2 hours. They accommodate food allergies and aversions. If you're a vegan or have many foods you won't or can't eat - go elsewhere and don't complain about not being accommodated. Not every restaurant has to appease all people. It's like asking a BbQ place you know only serves BbQ and asking for broccoli and no Bbq sauce. Don't complain about the menu not being accommodating! Try everything, why not? If it's a hard no, politely ask to skip it or can they sub something you truly can't eat. This experience is an art and don't be closed minded. But, I needed to avoid goat cheese - and that was accommodated by the team. Sit at the bar. Know it's a bar with high stools. If that doesn't work for you they gladly sit you at a table if there is room. My only complaint or should I say question - love the presentation but do you throw all that rice away the food is served on? Seems wasteful :( and the rocks/pebbles for the presentation of dessert seems dangerous. I get that people "know" they are rocks, but seems like a silly liability. Candies didn't need the rocks. They blended in. The flowers in the vase upon sitting were cute. Warn us early not to touch them - but maybe we should have known better? I know this chef is not a rule follower and cooks food "he wants" - and not what's "in style" but I always thought - unless it was edible - don't put it on the plate. The big bone, not needed. It made me question some other items I ate that may not have been edible? Worth the fun and tried things I'd NEVER try or make myself - so that is cool. Chef clearly knows food and is grateful for his clients. As the patron: Do your homework before going - and you will know if it will be fun or good for you.
Be the first to ReplyI cannot say enough about this place.
Chef Chris & his staff are on point. I love the music, the vibe & the fact that everyone obviously loves what they do. This was our 3rd time at Localis & we will be back. This time we brought our son for his 12th birthday, he wants to be a chef when he grows up. It was awesome to see him interact with chef, ask questions, give feedback on dishes & feel so comfortable. His words "my love & knowledge of cooking has expanded so much." My Mama heart is so full. They did a great job of helping him feel special, such a blessing to see what the best of the industry he wants to go into looks & feels like. Thank you all for a wonderful night out!

My first time doing fine dining and what an experience it was! Honestly, nothing but good things to say about the food, service, and ambience. Definitely sit at the chef's counter to get the full experience! Chef Chris and his team were amazing! You can tell they take pride in what they do and their cooking. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Well deserved Michelin guide star! Food was spectacular! There wasn't one dish I didn't like. Everything was so beautifully made and presented. They really do feed you well. Highly recommend their beverage pairings, whether it's wine or nonalcoholic drinks. I got the nonalcoholic beverage pairing and it was a whole experience in itself. This is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones. I will definitely be back!!

Chris and the staff were really nice, the food and the experience were exquisite, my family had the best time!
Be the first to ReplyEasily one of my favorite restaurants in Sacramento.
The dishes are constantly changing based on seasonality. The best seat in the house is the counter where the chef explains the backstory or inspiration of the beautiful dish you are about to enjoy. It truly is a wonderful dining experience that evokes more than just the tastebuds. I highly recommend Localis.
Be the first to ReplySacramento's newest Michelin star restaurant.
Definitely a place to go for a celebration. Booking was not too difficult. We were able to get a booking within the week. Seating is either at the bar or private table. We enjoyed being at the bar and interacting with the chef. The menu changes by the month but there are a few staples such as the painter's palette. Wonderfully executed. They were also easily able to accommodate for dietary restrictions. You can feel all of the thought put into each dish. Each course was presented with a story. The cocktails were also exquisite. The service is top notch.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband brought me here for my birthday.
He wanted to do something special for me. He booked this place weeks in advance. This is a tasting menu. They charge per person. Wine or non-alcoholic pairings are an extra charge. You can order drinks; pairings are not required. The menu does change with the seasons. We sat at the bar/counter where you can see the plating process. Our seats had a menu of what they were going to serve that night. The food was great. Every dish was unique and had a story with it. All the chefs put a lot of work into it. You can see how hard they worked, and they want the plates to be perfect. At the end of dinner service, the Chef gave us a little baked good to take home. That was a nice touch. Banana bread, that was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyFirst off, I'll start by saying that the 4-star rating is
First off, I'll start by saying that the 4-star rating is only due to a couple of aspects of service, which I'll go into. The food and the wine were absolutely amazing. My wife and I ate at Localis for the first time last week. We had wanted to go there for the last couple of years but just hadn't gotten it together to make the reservation. After a medical issue kept me housebound for a couple of months, we decided that dinner at Localis would be a good way to celebrate my release from confinement. We were right. We were wowed by every course, with so much perfection in both flavor and texture. We've eaten at other starred restaurants and Localis is up there with the best (including that laundromat place in Yountville ;-) ) We shared the upgraded wine pairing and it was well worth the cost. Neither of us has ever experience such sublime matches between food and wine. That chef-somm combination really makes for excellent wine choices. We also started with cocktails, which were also excellent. And the combination of a cocktail each with splitting the wine pairings was good in terms of alcohol consumption. We both agreed that doing a wine pairing each with a cocktail would have been too much. So five or maybe six stars for food, wine, and cocktails. Where we had some minor issues was with the service. We sat down, ordered cocktails and let them know that we were looking at wine pairings. The cocktails were served and shortly after that, the first course came out. Unfortunately, it came out before anyone thought to see if we wanted to order the wine pairing. They brought out the first wine, but we'd finished our first course by then. The other aspect of service that was unappealing was our primary server. (I say "primary" because service is shared between a bunch of different people.) She came off as overly fake-pleasant, calling us "my friends", over and over, in a tone that was completely unnatural. That became quite grating after three or four courses and had me gagging by course eight. This is in contrast to the bartender, who was loose, friendly, and fun to talk to. This is where a star gets lost, as a place like Localis needs to provide excellent service to go with that excellent food and that steep price tag. It's a strict standard that they need to meet.My wife and I were split on the room. I liked the casual, homey aspects while she thought that a place like this should be gussied up a bit more. Both of us agreed that the lighting was pretty bad, and the sort that doesn't flatter anyone. No stars off for this, though. I didn't think it was anywhere near unpleasant enough to detract from the experience (unlike that server). So we'll certainly be back. The food and wine were phenomenal, and being able to get a meal like this without having to drive to Napa or San Francisco is just wonderful. I hope the issues with service were the kinds of things we won't run into the next time. So four stars - Mike sez definitely check it out when you want to splurge.

We got the non-alcoholic drink pairing. Highly recommend! We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyUpdating my review since they earned the Michelin star.
All I can say is: IT'S ABOUT DANG TIME THEY GOT THIER STAR! Localis is a true gem. Owner and Chef Chris is simply the best. He truly loves his job, and his food is art! And each dish tastes as amazing as it looks. Each dish has a fun theme/story and chef explains why it was chosen and how it all ties into the menus story line. His humor, joy, and culinary compassion, and love of local producers, truly show in each dish/paring and anyone can see it when watching him in his element. And the Wine Pairing UPGRADE is sooooo worth it.Oh, and when they ask if you want to add the caviar supplement the only right answer is-YES, AND CAN I ORDER DOUBLE? Out of all the fine dining establishments i've gone to (which is quite a few) Localis is my favorite hands down. Chefs counter experience is worth every single dollar. It's such a fun fun time! And his music changes to match with each course! So cool. You will be in for a fun & delicious dining experience!......Now i'm hungry and want to go back!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is excellent here with a great atmosphere.
Tweezers are the chef's best friends as they delicately put together each beautiful dish. Amazing flavors I never thought to put together. Even the cocktails were great and I'm not much of an alcohol fan. I had the Annihilator. Definitely worth checking out to see what explosions Chef Christopher Barnum-Dunn has for your palette. Thank you!!
Be the first to ReplyA truly special place filled with hard working good people
A truly special place filled with hard working good people and a restaurant that is bursting with flavor and creativity! The chef is extremely talented yet humble. I am absolutely amazed at his creativity and culinary skills! While his ingredients are of very high quality, he doesn't depend on "fancy" or "expensive" ingredients to elevate his dish. He can transform an ordinary carrot into a delectable and memorable dish - that to me, is where I think his humbleness and talent lies. Each course is meticulously plated and some were a bit playful - like the campfire carrots where carrot matchsticks were placed carefully to create a mini campfire on your plate. All the servers were attentive and friendly but we really enjoyed our time with our main server, Ramon. We always appreciated his detailed highlights of each dish and the story behind it. I don't think it's fair to compare Localis and Kitchen as their food and operations are very different, and we've enjoyed dining at both restaurants very much. However, I do personally appreciate the smaller, private seating and the "dine at your own pace" that Localis offers (we spent 3 hrs there) vs the large group sitting which can easily stretch into a 3.5-4 hr affair. Thank you Localis for a very memorable meal. We will be back :))

The food is very good, service is good as well - however we felt there was an abundant of seafood plates (6 of 12). We would describe them as the lite weight version of The Kitchen. What would give this place a better rating from us less seafood (maybe 3 than 6), an entertaining way to describe the food, or reduce the price. A solid effort and you should try it, but we would rather save more money and go to The Kitchen. But if you want a budget friendly experience, then this place is good.

I went with my wife for the 12 course, Chef's tasting, paired with the wine. This dinner was fantastic. We were able to talk with the chef and the staff and everyone was so welcoming and genuinely enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs. I recommend this place to anyone and I will definitely be returning.

We have eaten at many Michelin Star restaurants around the globe and this Sacramento gem is well deserving of the Michelin Star. Just a matter of time they will have more stars. 12 course meal was perfection, and the service was spot on. Bravo Chef and staff.

What an extravaganza! We heard about this place getting a Michelin star so I jumped on getting reservations. Two days before our reservations, the restaurant called and asked if we had any foods we wanted to avoid and they were totally kind about accommodating that strawberries and cucumbers were on our list. We came here on a saturday night and found the ambience to be lively and comfortable. The "bar" area is facing the kitchen with lots of entertained patrons who were clearly having fun. We sat at a table in the back, which was more romantic. The decor was really pretty. Even though Localis has a Michelin star, it has a welcoming atmosphere that isn't pretentious or snobby. I wore a sweater dress and heels and my husband wore chinos and a button up shirt and sweater and we fit in perfectly fine. No suits needed here. There is no outdoor seating, so no dogs. Parking is on the street. We Ubered because we did the alcohol pairing. The chef delivered many of the courses himself and was very down to earth and humorous. I like that he didn't take himself or that Michelin star too seriously, except when it came to the food. The food was spectacular. The presentations were artfully beautiful! The blend of often surprising ingredients were complementary and each bite brought something new to taste. This restaurant didn't simply offer a meal, it offered an experience. We also enjoyed the full alcohol pairing that came with our 12 course meal, which was also filled with little surprises. They also offer a non-alcohol pairing!! So thoughful! When we thought the meal was over and dessert was done, they brought us more food! Homemade banana bread and some homemade candies. I think I would have burst if I ate anymore food, so they boxed them up for us.Overall, this was a beautiful experience and I highly recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyHeard rave reviews, saw the Michelin star and had to go.
Sat at the bar and were pleasantly surprised at the awesome tunes, chill vibe, dimly lit and friendly but casual atmosphere here. The owner chatted with us but also explained and detailed the food before presenting and "putting it up" on the counter with his coworkers. For sure a different, less fancy and not performed routine "shtick"....unlike the Kitchen. Some tables for 4 tops but unsure how the presentation is there......two at the bar is the way to go. At the end? Provided homemade banana bread to take home!!! I mean, please!!! Will return absolutely!!!!

Unfortunately - was very disappointed with our experience at Localis. Anniversary dinner for me and my wife - let's be fancy! Do something special! Localis fit the bill. And....quite the bill (750 total for 2 with one of us getting the alcoholic drink pairing). I would definitely affirm the staff and chef were eager to please and wanted to make a unique dining experience. But - and I don't know why - it completely missed the mark. For a place like this -"trust us to feed you well"- I left very unsatisfied. Portions were bite size and I left hungry (I guess I need more than 12 bites to feel full) - dishes while creative lacked depth. The sauces and seasonings felt empty and wispy. One entree was a green curry dish - which usually pops with flavor - but this tasted like weight watchers got involved and told the chef to get rid of the cream. Presentation was fabulous - it looked tasty (which is part of the experience) - but to take a bite was like opening up an empty cardboard box for Christmas - disappointing. I am unsure why the dichotomy of reviews - but it seems like those of us in the one star camp all had a similar experience. Overpriced and unsatisfying. Now if the Chef gets to read this (and I understand I am not a formal critic or in the biz and don't fully understand, but if I may pretend I do) - I would first consider increasing the portion size. I would hope for the price tag another two or three slices doesn't break the budget. Second - have an anchor dish? Something simple and concrete, familiar that tastes good and can work to fill that tummy. 11 other areas to explore is plenty! Third - seasoning! It just felt like the meal needed "more butter" and was rather lean and spartan. Anyway - hoping this helps other decide and Localis to better fulfill that promise to feed us well!!!

Spent last weekend in Sac with friends for Stitches West, a knitting convention. My friend picked Localis for one of our dinners bc she saw the chef is a 2022 semi finalist for James Beard Best Chef California. I hadn't heard of Localis before but what a find! Splurged on the 12 course dinner because the extra 5 courses are their most sought-after dishes so of course I had to try them. ย I also saw there was a non-alcoholic pairing so I got that too. Even though I enjoy alcohol, I'm always intrigued by non-alcoholic pairings since I think they tend to be more varied (not just wine!) and creative. All the pairings worked, and the food was phenomenal. Best meal I've had in Sac for sure (and yes I've eaten in Sac plenty of times over the years), and this tasting menu was right up there with some of my fave SF ones. Also loved that the chefs and bartender would bring the dishes and talk about their inspiration for them. My favorite dishes were the French onion dip, crab salad, carrots in Thai curry, grilled octopus, and pastrami bao.My friends' 6yo accompanied us at dinner and the restaurant was soooo accommodating, even more than we could have ever expected. She was largely eating off her parents' plates but she got her own For Dad plate as well as an amuse bouche and some desserts. She also loved the lemon-aid drink (which was in my pairing and which I can confirm was very good). One friend described it as a fancy meal without feeling pretentious and the other described it as homey (in a good way of course). My bff and my bf were unable to join so I told them both we need to come together someday (and bring my bff's son). Loved everything: the food, the drinks, the creativity, the service, the environment.
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I decided on trying the 12 course dinner.
I know this was a tasting, but each course was literally one bite. After spending 550 on a meal for two, we went home extremely disappointed and still pretty hungry. The ingredients used were very subpar to other tasting I have experienced. The only memorable dish was the octopus. The pastrami was a bit salty, and the duck was really just a slice of roasted bbq duck.
Be the first to ReplyLoves everything about this place.
Service was amazing, sommelier was knowledgeable and all the staff was super helpful. I've never had a 12 course meal before and I was a little intimidated at first but everyone was such a joy and explained each dish so well. The group loved the crab. The geranium ice cream was also amazing. Really, each dish was just so good. I look forward to trying the summer menu. We'll be back!!
Be the first to ReplyI mean yes, of course this place is bomb.
Super fun experience and creative dishes are the name of the game. The vibes are high here and the team feels kind of like a family which adds a lot to the good vibes. Due to the cost it may be an annual thing only but ya this place fuks
