My husband and I just dropped by Maison Yaki before a BAM performance last night. This is a cute, comfortable, casual neighborhood spot serving some truly delicious food for reasonable prices!
It's small, and in keeping with wanting it to be a neighborhood spot where folks can drop in, a portion of the tables and the bar are for walk-ins. Menu items, including cocktails, are purposely priced below $10 each.
Menu items consist of small cold plates, small warm plates, and a number of yakitori-like sticks featuring vegetables (trumpet mushroom, leeks, and asparagus were on the menu last night), poultry (wings, chicken breast and duck), meats (lamb, beef, and pork belly), and seafood (scallops, lobster, and a fish). Each consists of around 2 oz of protein/veg, served with a most-delicious french-based sauce made specifically for each item.
Dishes consistently surprised us in a most pleasant way; some are a fresh take on classics - duck a l'orange skewers consisted of a ground duck patty with the lightest, yummiest sauce with just a hint of orange, instead of the cloyingly sweet orange sauce that one imagines for a menu item of this name.
Our server was very friendly and advised us very well. We particularly enjoyed the salmon mimosa tartare, the duck rillettes, and for the sticks - the asparugus, duck, pork belly, and scallops were our favorites. We couldn't stop ordering more to try the various offerings. In the end we ordered two small cold plates, one small warm plate, 3 vegetable skewers, and 4 skewers with animal protein. For dessert the profiteroles with ginger and matcha were pretty amazing! The total bill, with a generous tip, 3 glasses of wine and two cocktails was just over $150!
Can hardly wait to return! This spot is a real gem!
